A homage to Morton Feldman and a companion piece to his Triadic Memories, Skempton’s Notti stellate a Vagli conjures up images of Tuscany, through its, in the composer’s words, ‘nocturnal tone and stellar texture’. 18 minutes Off Limits Tenor saxophone solo Score 9780193588561 In this exuberant solo work, the principal idea is an arching melody that explores the full range of the instrument. 10 minutes Par la bande Lute solo Score 9780193588714 This piece is based on the opening bars of the Sarabande from Bach’s second cello suite in D minor. ‘Par la bande’ means ‘in a roundabout way’ and suggests a circularity of form and a less than direct approach to the original theme. 4 minutes Six Figures for solo cello Cello solo Score 9780193588813 ‘Progressively laying out aspects of cello technique— double stopping, pizzicato, glacial harmonies—and then combining them, the work builds to a substantial fourth movement and then falls away.’(Birmingham Post review) 7 minutes Solitary Highland Song Piano Solo Score 9780193530157 This evocative miniature is simple but rewarding, with a repeating eight-bar chord progression that produces a kaleidoscopic quality.
