Welcome to Duffield Carnival
The Carnival Crew, groups, individuals and businesses of Duffi eld have come together to stage
the Duffi eld Carnival; not just a day but a whole week of events. Contributions to the Carnival
take many forms including time, money, skills and resources for which we are very appreciative.
The Carnival Crew stitch it together, but without the Community as whole it wouldn’t happen.
Carnival week promises to be a busy one, as you will have seen there is something every day
of the week, events catering for the whole spectrum of the village.
Carnival Day itself starts with a bang as a Batala band leads the procession through the streets
of Duffi eld. We hope that the fl oats will be as stunning as previous years. New “fl oats” are
always welcomed, they don’t need to be on a vehicle or have loads of people, just something
eye catching and evoking the theme “Name that Tune”.
This year we are changing the entry fee; after 1200 on Carnival Day tickets and entry to Eyes
Meadow will be a fl at £5 per person for all except for primary and infants. This will speed up the
process of admitting people to the Carnival Field.
Our ticket sales mean we can hire the marquees, equipment, toilets, acts etc. Not forgetting
Security costs which were new to us last year and will be incurred again this year. We will be
operating a policy of random searches for substance abuse and underage alcohol. Apart from
funding the staging of the Carnival week, your entry fees are the main means of generating
funds for the Duffi eld Community Association which invests those funds back into the village.
Feedback from recent years has been a preference for several small-scale entertainments as
opposed to a “main” act. As a result there will be plenty of things happening on the day (bands,
dancers, circus skills, sports, village games, Punch n Judy, village games, with an emphasis
on both participation and entertainment. This year there will be more local food outlets on
the meadow during the afternoon and evening. The Crew has worked to provide you with
entertainment from 1pm to 9pm.
Last year rain was averted on Carnival Day by the Crew’s strategy of dancing
naked at dawn on Eyes Meadow. We will repeat this on the fi fth Friday in May
at 6am, all are welcome to join us – no cameras please.
The Carnival is ever evolving in small ways, this is healthy, however it should
extend to the make-up of the Carnival Crew itself i.e. to keep things fresh. We
welcome new crew members with their ideas and dynamism to continue the
popularity of the Carnival. If you want to be part of the Carnival Crew (unpaid,
underloved, undiminished) and put on this year’s Carnival or plan next year’s
event then, please contact us on duffieldcarnival@gmail.com.
