The Brahmaputra, one of the<br />
mighty rivers of the country<br />
flowing through the district,<br />
registered a further rise in 24<br />
hours till 9 am yesterday.<br />

said water level of the river<br />
rose by 2 cm during the period<br />
due to on rush of hilly waters<br />
from the upstream and<br />
incessant rainfall in the last<br />
few days.<br />
The river Brahmaputra was<br />
flowing 21 cm below its danger<br />
mark at fulchharighat point of<br />
the district yesterday morning.<br />
if the rising trend continued,<br />
the river would cross its<br />
danger level shortly<br />
inundating the low lying areas<br />
of the district, said an official.<br />
on the other hand, with the<br />
rise of water level, the river<br />
erosion has taken a serious<br />
turn at Goghat, purba<br />
Batikamari, perdiara,<br />
Kharzani and raidashbari<br />
areas of Kamarjani union of<br />
sadar upazila.<br />
local sources said 97<br />
families of the areas have<br />
already become homeless due<br />
to the river erosion.<br />

Popularising BRRI-evolved<br />
Aman rice varieties stressed<br />

department of agriculture extension (dae)<br />
agriculturist Mohammad Mohsin has put<br />
emphasis on popularising cultivation of aman<br />
rice varieties evolved by Bangladesh rice<br />
research institute (Brri) to further increase<br />
rice production, reports Bss.<br />
"The field level agriculture officials should<br />
ensure proper cropping pattern of Brri<br />
invented short duration aman rice for its<br />
successful cultivation," he said at a workshop<br />
held at dinajpur on saturday afternoon as the<br />
chief guest.<br />
He suggested making exhibition plots to<br />
popularise the Brri-evolved rice varieties and<br />
taking steps to prepare late variety aman rice<br />
seedling to recoup crop losses from floods.<br />

the workshop titled "steps necessary for<br />
cultivation of aman rice in dinajpur-rangpur<br />
regions to increase production" at BraC<br />
learning Centre in dinajpur district town.<br />

Brri-evolved flood-tolerant rice varieties like<br />
Brri dhan52 and Brri dhan79 on low-lying<br />
lands and drought-tolerant rice Brri dhan56,<br />
Brri dhan57, Brri dhan66 and Brri dhan71<br />
on drought-prone lands in the regions.<br />
He suggested cultivating of the Brri-evolved<br />
photo sensitive rice varieties like Br22, Br23,<br />
Brri dhan46 and Brri dhan34 during postflood<br />
period in flood-prone areas to recoup<br />
crop loses.<br />
He also suggested farming Brri-evolved<br />
premium quality rice Brri dhan34, Brri<br />
dhan70 and Brri dhan80 varieties in<br />
dinajpur region and stressed the need for<br />
cultivation of zinc-enriched Brri dhan62 and<br />
Brri dhan72 during aman season.<br />
dr sarker discussed proper methods for<br />
agronomical, weed and pest managements and<br />
suggested not using pesticide before 30 days<br />
since transplantation of seedling to get<br />
maximum yield rate of aman rice.<br />
dr shajahan Kabir in his concluding speech<br />
asked the participating field level agriculture<br />
officers to properly utilise the knowledge and<br />
recommendations they acquired from the<br />
workshop for ensuring hassle-free cultivation<br />
of aman crop this season.<br />

Taka 600.68-cr safety net allowance<br />
disbursed in Rajshahi<br />

department of social services (dss) here<br />
has disbursed safety net allowance worth<br />
over Taka 600.68 crore among 1.16 lakh<br />
beneficiaries since 20<strong>09</strong>, reports Bss.<br />
some 69,008 people got old-age allowance<br />
worth Taka 217.41 crore while 15,110 others<br />
with special needs received disabled<br />
allowance of Taka 39.93 crore.<br />
each of the age-old beneficiaries got Taka<br />
600 and the person with special needs Taka<br />
700 per month from their respective<br />
account-holding banks.<br />
"We disbursed Taka 210.14 crore among<br />
26,715 divorced and other women repressed<br />
by their husband," said rashedul Kabir,<br />
deputy director of dss, adding that 2,404<br />
freedom fighters were given allowance worth<br />
Taka 131.93 crore.<br />
some 182 transgender people got special<br />
old-age allowance Taka 15.33 lakh while 219<br />
bede population were given similar type of<br />
allowance worth Taka 17.47 lakh.<br />
Besides, 1,865 physically challenged<br />
students were given education sub-stipend<br />
worth around Taka 20.31 crore for their<br />
institutional education. one hundred and 40<br />
transgender students also got allowance<br />
worth around Taka 6.43 lakh.<br />
rashedul Kabir says the beneficiaries have<br />
been getting their respective allowance<br />
timely through their own bank accounts. The<br />
present government has taken many steps<br />
including old-age- allowance for the welfare<br />
of poor people to help them passing their<br />
days without difficulty.<br />
"Considering their vulnerable condition,<br />
the government has increased their old-ageallowance<br />
and also number of beneficiaries<br />
from the current fiscal," he said.<br />
Transgender people have started getting<br />
skill development training here for<br />
improving their living and livelihood<br />
condition.
