SPORTS NEWS
Last week saw our year 12 students
for the last time represent Mazenod
in an ACC sporting event.
It dawned on them after their race, that a chapter in their lives had just been
completed. For all, it has been a very successful and enjoyable journey and the
satisfaction gained has helped enhance their own pride in Mazenod College.
At the Year 12 Retreat early in the year, I had the opportunity to speak to all
the students. I asked them if they were given a million dollars, how they would
spend it. Like many of us they would easily spend it in a number of different
ways. I then asked how they could invest it, so as to help them in the future. I
then drew the comparison with school and in particular sport, but also life in
general. That if they were prepared to invest their talents in sport, music,
academia and leadership, then a large reward for them would come at the end
when they cashed it out!
For the majority of Year 12 boys, they will be making some big transactions at
the end of the year. It seemed only the other day that I had these fresh faced
students sitting at the front and back of my Year 7 Mathematics class. Where
has time gone? These tall strapping young men are just about ready to take on
the world and we are all very proud of each and every one of them.
The Year 12 body have embraced sport with passion and enthusiasm and have
driven the rest of the school to join them in our pursuit of excellence and
enjoyment in sport! Not once this year has anyone from the sports department
had to chase up or force anyone to play or participate in any sport. In fact on
most occasions we have had more than enough students wishing to
participate, which we witnessed last Wednesday at the Cross Country.
The Year 12 body have left a great example for the Year 11 students to pick up
and follow. They have truly shown that if you are prepared to invest fully, then
the end rewards are endless. On behalf of everyone that has been associated
with sport at Mazenod we say thank you to every Year 12 student that has
committed fully to our programs over the past 6 years. We fully appreciate that
the strength of the program and the integrity of the ACC competition is a result
of the character, passion and commitment each and every student has made to
compete fairly and in the true spirit of sport.
Last night was another celebration, which saw us honour all those students
who have excelled in sport over the year, either by skill or commitment. We
would love to honour every student that has represented Mazenod, but this is
not possible of course. I hope that the reward for them comes in the honour of
wearing the school colours in competition. The night was a great success in
honouring over 150 students for their contribution to ACC Sport over the year.
Congratulations to all our prize winners, may the thrill and honour of winning
such awards, inspire you and your fellow class mates to strive to reach your full
potential.
A big thanks to the PE and Sports Department for all their support and
assistance in coaching and preparing students over the term. It has been
another huge term and the strain is starting to show in some very tired people.
Big thanks to all those staff that give some much more than is expected, all for
the betterment of the College and your son(s). Enjoy the break it has been
thoroughly deserved.
ACC TERM 4
A reminder to all students that the cricket, volleyball and tennis ACC seasons all
begin first day back at school. I would encourage all players to come to school
prepared to play even if you are unsure of selection or weather. Final
selections will continue to take part at sport this week.
OBLATE CRICKET CARNIVAL – MELBOURNE 2010/11
Early next term preparations will begin for the Oblate carnival to be hosted by
us here at Mazenod. I would like to thank Mr David Regan and Mr Dirk Van
Heer for taking on the coaching duties for the Carnival. We thank both for their
continued support of this carnival as it will be Dirk’s 5 th attempt at winning
Mazenod the trophy. The carnival starts on Monday the 6 th of December and
concludes on the Thursday the 9 th . Games will be played here at Mazenod
College and also at Mentone Playing Fields Keysborough. The competing
schools are: Mazenod College (Vic), Mazenod College (W.A), Iona College (Qld),
Villanova College (QLD), Whitefriars College (Vic) and Mentone Grammar (Vic).
As we are hosting the Carnival we will soon be asking if parents would please
consider billeting students from the 2 Oblate Colleges. Whether your son is
playing or may one day play we would like you to please consider this as all 3
colleges have always taken in students from the other Colleges over the period
of the Carnival. A parent information meeting will be held next term.
OLD COLLEGIANS FOOTBALL
The Under 19 team played in their Grand Final last weekend and current Year
11 students Stephen Welsford and Patrick Flanagan both played with
distinction. Although the boys were unable to be Oakleigh, they can walk away
proud after falling a few goals short in what was a very close and exciting
game. Well done to Matthew Boyle and Aaron Holmes on their terrific games.
That now ends the season for all teams.
OLD COLLEGIANS CRICKET
Cricket training continues for the Old Collegians at the Central Reserve nets
while our nets dry out! Training times can be accessed on the website of the
MOCCC. A big invitation is extended to all under 14 and 16 players who may be
thinking of joining the club and playing in the Friday night competition.
