Dear fri<strong>en</strong>ds and future volunteers!<br />
FOREWORD<br />
We are the Italian national committee <strong>of</strong> the International Cultural Youth Exchange<br />
Federation, although our name sounds differ<strong>en</strong>t from the majority <strong>of</strong> the other national<br />
committees' d<strong>en</strong>omination.<br />
Our name is AFSAI, which is the acronym for Associazione per la Formazione, gli Scambi e<br />
le Attività Interculturali (Italian for Association for Education, Exchanges and Intercultural<br />
Activities) and we joined <strong>ICYE</strong> in 1978.<br />
The information about Italy and AFSAI you will find herewith we hope may help you to<br />
realize the right approach to the exchange year in our country.<br />
This National Pr<strong>of</strong>ile, though not a complete survey <strong>of</strong> Italian history and pres<strong>en</strong>t situation,<br />
will provide you with some g<strong>en</strong>eral information and some practical indications about either<br />
AFSAI or Italy.<br />
You will have information about Italian families, the communities' social life as well as a<br />
short pres<strong>en</strong>tation on how AFSAI is working, who are the people in the National<br />
Coordination Office in Rome and what the structure <strong>of</strong> our national committee is.<br />
We are sure you will find this National Pr<strong>of</strong>ile very useful and we suggest you to read it<br />
very carefully: any explanation you may need, do not hesitate to contact us for further<br />
information.<br />
Previous volunteers' experi<strong>en</strong>ces show how important it is to get clear ideas on what you<br />
may expect from the year you will sp<strong>en</strong>d in Italy.<br />
This National Pr<strong>of</strong>ile is also designed in order for you to know how much and what you will<br />
be able to gain and not, during your exchange year.<br />
