Message from President Dr. Al Roberts
A Lifelong Endeavor
I believe that learning is a lifelong
endeavor.
In 2015 Doreetha Daniels received
her associate degree in social sciences
from College of the Canyons
(COC), in Santa Clarita, California. But
Daniels wasn’t a typical student: She
was 99 years old. In the COC press
release about her graduation, Daniels
indicated that she wanted to get her
degree simply to better herself; her
six years of school during that pursuit
were a testament to her will, determination,
and commitment to learning,
according to an article by John Coleman in the
Harvard Business Review.
The article talks about how lifelong learning is
good for your health, your wallet and your social
life, too. I agree with this summation.
Here at Southside Virginia
Community College, we believe that
all citizens should be given an opportunity
to acquire an education that
develops and extends their skills and
knowledge. In support of our mission,
we encourage non-traditional
students, those who do not go to
college right after or soon after high
school, to take advantage of our
many educational and training programs.
Non-traditional students are
usually 24 and older; and every year
at graduation, I am truly honored to
congratulate and celebrate the many non-traditionals
who have achieved their educational goals.
Non-traditional students often have the additional
barriers of a job, family, attending part
time and not being eligible for financial aid. The
National Center for Education Statistics defines
nontraditional students as meeting any one of
seven distinctive attributes: delayed enrollment
into postsecondary education; attends college
part-time; works full time; is financially independent
for financial aid purposes; has dependents
other than a spouse; is a single parent; or does not
have a high school diploma. Nearly half of those
enrolled in higher ed today are so-called “nontraditional”
students. One quarter of all students
are over the age of 30.
At SVCC we want students to succeed regardless
of age or any other “non-traditional” characteristic.
Our focus is on student access, progress, and
success; and we have the people and programs in
place to support that focus. It’s never too late for
a new start; and remember, “Success Starts Here.”

PAGE 3 — FALL SEMESTER 2018
Life Continues for This Lifelong Learner
The often-used adage life begins at 40 is something
Angela Walker takes to heart. Of course, she had a full
life up to this point, but at 41, she decided to complete
her studies at Southside Virginia Community College
(SVCC). In December, she will receive dual degrees in
Criminal Justice and Human Services, a payoff to her
hard work and determination to succeed.
She embraces the fact that she is a non-traditional
student. Walker represents about half of the seven
characteristics of a non-traditional student, which
include delayed enrollment into postsecondary education;
attends college part-time; works full-time; is
financially independent for financial aid purposes; has
dependents other than a spouse; is a single parent; or
does not have a high school diploma.
Recently, she “starred” in a radio commercial for
the college talking about her experience of going
back to school. She tells the audience, “It is never too
late, my experience at SVCC has been fantastic and I
have received work promotions since going back to
school.”
Walker works at Greensville Correctional Center
and has been there for 21 years. She is the Executive
Secretary to the Warden Senior. Working full-time, she
is allotted education leave that enables her to work on
some of her classes.
A single parent, Walker has raised a son who now
attends college and he will be graduating in May 2019
from Bluefield College.
She advises others by reminding them that knowledge
is the key to success. Earning a degree is a milestone
for anyone, she said.
“Having this ability to grow in your career makes
me proud and feel accomplished,” she said.
Want To Attend
One of Virginia’s Best
Universities?
Start at one of the best community
colleges for guaranteed admission
to the state’s top schools!!!!
Virginia’s community colleges offer students
more than the opportunity to earn a degree or
certificate. They provide a gateway to the
commonwealth’s four-year colleges and
universities.
Through system-wide agreements, students
who graduate from one of Virginia's 23
community colleges with an associate's degree
and a minimum grade point average may obtain
GUARANTEED admission to more than 30 of
the commonwealth's colleges and universities.
And, even though the end of these degrees is
in sight, her educational goals will not end there.
Working towards a Bachelor’s degree is in her near
future, she said.
There should be no barriers to people interested
in furthering their education. At SVCC, there are many
people in place to make the pathway smoother despite
age, financial situation, and other circumstances, so
stop making excuses and take the first step to further
your education.
SDV 100 WORKS
Enroll within the first 15 credit hours
Student Development 100 (SDV 100), SVCC's 1-credit success course,
helps our students start strong in their first semester of college!
SDV 100 provides skills in time management, note taking
and test preparation, academic planning, career decision
making, financial literacy and critical thinking. Students
will also learn about SVCC policies, procedures,
and resources.
Research shows that student
success courses help students
earn higher GPAs and
increase their likelihood to
achieve their goals!

Adult Learners Form Study Group for Success
In South Hill, Virginia, computer towers and laptops
are being torn apart, literally. Students with Southside
Virginia Community College’s Center for Information
Technology Excellence program are rolling up their
sleeves and diving inside a personal computer.
The class, ITN 107, Personal Computer and Troubleshooting
is just one of the IT classes the students are
taking in preparation for the networking certification
known as COMPTIA A+. This certification prepares an
individual for careers as PC technician, IT Help Desk
and Data Center Technicians.
The course teaches about the hardware common
to personal computers, including CPU, RAM, motherboards,
power supplies, expansion slots, and tons of
acronyms common to the IT world.
“The IT world has tons of acronyms,” exclaimed
Kelly Arnold, SVCC’s Apprenticeship Coordinator for
IT and Advanced Manufacturing. Kelly enrolled in the
ITN 106 class to learn just that — acronyms. “While
working with the apprentices at the Microsoft facility
in Boydton, I realized the IT world has its own
language and I desired to learn more about the data
center world.”
The CITE study group would meet three or four
times a week before class started.
Shanell Toone was the one who formed the group
and says, “The study group helps so much in understanding
the lessons better. The class moves through
material quickly and if you do not grasp each concept
you can get behind. Also, the study group allowed me
to build a comfort zone where I could ask any questions
and the group would help me.” Many times someone
would bring up an easier way to learn / understand the
new information.
Christian Jackson liked the group because it helped
with motivation to study. Most of the time, if you did
not understand the lesson in class, you would be able
to catch up because the study group would help you
grasp the concepts, she noted.
Brenda Cross said, “The group really helped me with
practicing for the CompTIA A+ exam. When you have
been out of school for a while and then return, learning
how to study again is a challenge. Our small study
group provided emotional support, commitment, and
allowed me to learn complicated concepts easier. We
found that studying as a group livened up the study
session. The support we received from one another
was definitely the encouragement that I needed.”
Miles Thomas, SVCC Nursing Student
Mary Pulliam:
Never Stop
“In 2018, I earned an Associate Degree in Arts &
Science. I was battling with my diabetes in 2016 and
could not work so I decided to attempt going back to
finish my degree from 1992. My feelings about going
back to school are “Never stop, goals are an important
part of life .”
When I explored options for an ideal career, I knew I
wanted a career with lots of opportunities, flexibility,
and job security; and a choice that would keep me
“thinking and on my feet.” I found nursing to be an
excellent option and in May of 2018 graduated with
my Southside Virginia Community College (SVCC)
Associate Degree in Nursing. I now work at Sentara
Halifax Regional South Boston.
At first I wondered how I would fare as a male
without any prior medical experience. In my first year
of nursing school, which included clinical experiences
as a student, and with much support from instructors,
classmates, and family, I realized that I had made the
right decision. There is such a great feeling that comes
from helping people and trying to make their day a
little brighter!
I would recommend nursing to both men and
women because it is a rewarding, in-demand profession,
and there are so many directions to take in the
field. For anyone considering nursing, I would recommend
meeting with a college advisor to make sure
you are on track. Take the prerequisites very seriously,
because grades matter on the admission application.
And, talk to nurses and SVCC nursing faculty — they
love their jobs and will encourage you to go for it!
Helping People Is This Physical Therapists’ Cool Job
Dr. Yasmen Ibrahim’s job is cool even when she is working
in the 92-degree rehabilitation pool. Any weekday
will find this physical therapist working with a patient
in the medical fitness center, in the physical therapy
clinic or in the pool. She is very visible and very busy
and it is easy to see that she enjoys her chosen career.
“I like the variety of patient problems; in one session,
I may be working with a post-surgical patient and
in the next session I may be working with a patient
with neurological problems or sports-related injuries,”
she said.
Employed by VCU Community Memorial Hospital,
she works at the Rehab Center in South Hill. Interestingly,
she visited this very place early in her college
career and shared her dream of one day becoming a
physical therapist.
Donna Jarrell, Director of Rehab Services at VCU
CMH, commented, “It has been great to watch Yasmen
achieve that dream and then choose to work locally.”
Thanks to the advice of one of her brothers,
Ibrahim decided to delay her VCU admission and
attend Southside Virginia Community College upon
graduation from Brunswick Academy in 2008.
“He said I could save money and stay close to home
and I really liked the idea,” she said.
She enrolled at Southside and attended for a
year and a half and then decided to travel to Egypt,
a country she left with her family when she was only
two years old.
“I just needed to get in touch with myself and what
I wanted to do,” she explains. She returned to SVCC
and graduated in 2010 with an Associate in Arts and
Science.
Yasmen was fairly certain that she wanted to work
in a health career area so she majored in biology when
she entered VCU. To complete the 40-hour on-site
experience requirement at VCU, Yasmen not only
“shadowed” Dr. Jesse Jorde at the VCU CMH OP Rehab
Center, but also Dr. Harrison Vaughan at In-Touch
Therapy in South Hill during the summers of 2010 and
2011.
She notes, “these shadowing opportunities really
solidified my decision that physical therapy was what
I wanted.”
Yasmen then changed her major from biology to
exercise science and then back to biology. She realized
that a biology degree provided a back-up plan
for teaching since acceptance into a physical therapy
program was extremely competitive.
“I thought that if I didn’t get into a PT program,
I could teach biology. My SVCC biology instructor,
Martha Reed, provided a wonderful example of how it
can be done,” she noted.
Yasmen did very well with the coursework at VCU,
graduating in 2013 with nearly a 4.0 average.
“I wasn’t in any rush. I took extra courses that were
additional prerequisites for physical therapy and took
the time to learn all I could.” Her bachelor’s degree
was followed with the Graduate Record Exams, a PT
admissions requirement. She added, “my scores were
only just above average and I worried about being
accepted even with my high GPA.”
She got an interview at Marymount University and
an acceptance into the program. She points out that
students should not let test scores be a discouraging
factor. Out of 2,000 applicants to this program, only
200 got an interview and between 50 and 60 students
were accepted. In the end there were around 40 in her
class with double the number of women than men.
Her program at Marymount University was three years
long and she was enrolled from 2014 through 2017.
After another trip to visit family members in Egypt, she
began her present employment in December 2017,
grateful to be working in the community in which she
grew up.
As Yasmen reflects on SVCC, she says that it was
a “good stepping stone.” She found everyone helpful
from the faculty advisors to the faculty in the classroom.
She especially remembers the transfer help
from Bernadette Battle including the transfer trips to
Longwood University and University of Richmond.
She feels that it is so important to visit college campuses
when making transfer decisions.
“The Alberta Campus is really a beautiful one. I
enjoyed lunch with my friends and the various activities
in the student lounge. One time a handwriting
analyst was on the campus and I remember this as one
of many fun events. One of my assignments was to
interview Dr. Terry Whisnant, my psychology instructor,
and I recall that he said the one thing each of us
can control is our perspective and outlook on life. This
comment has had a positive impact on me in living my
life.”
Rehab Director Jarrell finds Yasmen a very compassionate,
caring therapist who focuses on patientcentered
care. And Yasmen Ibrahim enjoys her work at
VCU CMH Rehab where she can help people and really
make a difference.

Online Course Requirements
Information related to online courses can be found by visiting our website at http://www.
southside.edu and clicking on Academics, SVCC Distance Education. Here you will find links
to information regarding online course requirements and an online assessment, student
orientation to online learning, to help you judge your readiness for online learning. Please
go to this page and read all information before registering for an online course. Academic
advisors and counselors can also assist you in decision making regarding online education.
Students who register for online courses should be familiar with Blackboard, an
online course management system. If you need assistance with Blackboard, email
blackboard@southside.edu. After logging in to Blackboard, you will find the online faculty
email directory. Please contact your instructor(s) as soon as possible via your SVCC
e-mail account. Tell the instructor your name, the course for which you have registered, and
your correct SVCC e-mail address. Links to the courses are made available on the first day
of classes of each term. Plan to visit Blackboard as soon as classes begin to find your course
web site. To be successful, remember that it is the student’s responsibility to email the
instructor and log in to Blackboard to find the online course.
Online students must have a computer, Internet access, word processing software
(Microsoft Word is preferred) and be proficient users of both Blackboard and E-mail
accounts. Other technical requirements can be found at http://www.southside.edu, Academics,
SVCC Distance Education, Minimal Technical Requirements. Students who wish
to use SVCC’s facilities for these requirements can travel to any campus or center to do
so. Campus computer labs have posted hours and may require prior permission for night
or weekend use. Please check to determine when campus computer labs or the campus
library computers are available for use.
Students are responsible for submitting assignments and taking examinations according
to the instructor’s directions. Students must adhere to the conditions stated in the
syllabus regarding procedures for taking tests and examinations and/or performing laboratory
exercises. These conditions may require students to travel to a college campus,
another school, a public library, or other site to take tests and examinations under supervision
and/or perform laboratory exercises or field work.
Definitions for online courses
