In today’s world, the diversity of mass<br />
spectrometry instrumentation and applications<br />
thereof is simply mind-boggling. The mid to late<br />
19th century heralded the emergence of the<br />
concept that later led to the development of mass<br />
spectrometers that could physically ‘weigh’ the<br />
mass of a molecule. Over the last 150 years, this<br />
analytical instrumentation has developed into<br />
the fascinating and remarkably diverse field of<br />
mass spectrometry (MS) with practical, modernday<br />
applications covering a myriad of topics.<br />
MS is used in forensics and anti-terrorism to<br />
analyze chemical warfare agents and explosives.<br />
These not only pose immediate danger to<br />
the safety and well-being of people; but can<br />
have long-term hazardous implications for<br />
humankind, wildlife and the ecosystem. MS<br />
also aids in monitoring drug abuse by assisting<br />
law enforcement in the rapid detection and<br />
identification of designer drugs and narcotics;<br />
and plays a key role in maintaining societal<br />
health by evaluating and ensuring the safety of<br />
food and beverages. Similarly, in the medicinal<br />
plant industry, heavy metal levels in cannabis<br />
are monitored by MS to guarantee the continued<br />
well-being of patients.<br />
MS furthers our access to new, innovative<br />
therapeutic approaches to diagnose, monitor<br />
and treat disease. Applications include real-time<br />
monitoring of brain cell metabolism in animals for<br />
toxicological profiling and drug discovery. Other<br />
advances in MS not only provide information on<br />
higher-order protein structure, contaminating<br />
proteins and the in vivo behavior of emerging<br />
biotherapeutics; but also, on the efficacy and<br />
safety of these drugs. Furthermore, MS is used<br />
to understand aberrant signaling pathways<br />
for drug development, or to identify molecular<br />
signatures from the circulating proteome of<br />
a patient that can be exploited to overcome<br />
treatment resistance and relapse. Indeed, MS<br />
can now even guide surgeons in real-time to<br />
precisely resect cancerous tissue.<br />
