Editor’s Letter
From being a tradition reserved for heads of
governments, the red carpet tradition has evolved to
become popular tradition at most functions; sometimes,
busier than the main event. These days, it is a place of
encounter for celebrities and camera both still and
moving.
For this reason, for high octane events such as movie,
music, or style awards, celebrities go to great length to
bring their A-game on, putting their best feet forward,
and hoping if possible, to make the list of best dressed.
Making this list brings a lot of satisfaction not just to the
celebrity, but to all those who worked behind the scene
to put the winning look together: Designer, stylist, make
up artist, hair stylist etc.
A few of our stars, constantly, make this hallowed list.
They have mastered the art and knows what suits their
body well enough to make a hit on the red carpet.
On our cover, Yemisi Suleiman compiles a list of some of
these stars, and tells us what makes them tick. page
8-10
Making a success of your appearance on the red carpet
means, making certain important choices such as; colour
of dress, type of fabric, design etc. Because it’s often
about glamour on the red carpet, celebrities love to bling
and shine and put on an ensemble that flows effortlessly.
On page 6-7, Linda Orajekwe lists some popular red
carpet choices.
With all said and done, it’s not always perfect all the
time. Some make all the efforts and still have a bad
Fashion day. Loose stitches or button out of place can
cause colossal harm and bring great embarrassment. Rita
Chioma asked some celebrities to share their bad Fashion
day experience. Read what they said on page 3.
We do hope this edition will take
your fashion game a notch higher.
Enjoy the serve.
Happy Sunday.
Bad Day
- Celebrities Speak
by - Rita Chioma
Celebrities put in great efforts to look good. But even the most
stylish and fashion conscious of them do have a fashion bad day. It
could happen to anyone at anytime.
Nigerian celebrities recall their unforgettable fashion experiences.
My tailor made a
disaster dress
Genny Uzoma, Actress
I had an interview appointment
with a reputable TV channel and
I needed to look good. So, I
booked my tailor about four
weeks earlier to make a
dress. Typical of Nigerian
tailors, she made it the day
before in a big hurry. The
dress was a disaster. I
noticed it on the way and
couldn’t change it. It was
over rumpled, seams were
tearing etc.
I was so embarassed and
couldnt even take a picture
in the dress. Luckily for
me, I sat down for the
interview. It was just the
upper body that was
captured, mostly my
face.
My trouser
tore underneath
Yetunde Bakare, Actress
I was wearing a very
tight, rugged pair of
jeans, it ended up
tearing underneath
while I was trying to
cross a gutter. It
was so
embarrassing. I felt
really bad that day
because it was
as if everybody
was looking at
me, and I
couldn’t do
anything again.
I just had to go
back home.
My shirt got torn in a
supermarket
Debbie Shokoya,
Movie Producer
I was in a supermarket,
when the T- Shirt I was
putting on mistakenly,
hooked on to the iron
basket that is used in
supermarkets. While
trying to untangle it from
the basket, it got torn. I
had greeted a fan before
the incident. That day, I
had to quickly conclude
what I went there for.
My total outfit stirred
controversy
Tonia Nwosu, Actress
Sometime ago, I went to an event looking all
smart and elegant in a fashionable outfit
that conveyed my intelligence and
confidence. Then, I met a certain woman
who appeared to be in her fifties but looks
both classy and arrogant. She seems to
have a fashion disagreement with my
outfit.
My flat boot and knit skirt were
comfortable and the white blouse
and blazer were elegant yet all
business like. She was insistent
that I should have worn a long
pant instead displaying my knit
skirt. She sounded very rude
and rigidly argued
endlessly. I felt really bad
and I couldn’t follow the
show to the end. I just
left.
My pretty shoes
embarrassed me
Lilian Amah, Filmmaker
I went for a movie premiere and chose to wear a
fairly new pair of shoes I hadn’t worn in a while.
Because I was running late, I didn’t take time to
move my work stuff out of the car before going for
the event. As I stepped out of my car and took a
few steps towards the hall, my pretty shoes gave
way. It was a pair of strappy gold sandals. So once
the front strap gave way, I couldn’t walk in them.
Totally embarrassed, I limped back to the car
wondering what on earth I was going to do. As I
stepped into the car in despair, my eyes fell on
the black slip on’s I had worn to work. I put them
on and went into the hall conscious of the fact that
I was wearing basic slip on’s to a high fashion
event. But I was grateful I had an alternative. I
learned from that fiasco to always have a spare
pair of shoes in my car all the time.
My Jumpsuit
ripped open
Florence Hungbo,
Fashion Designer
My jumpsuit got torn in Renaissance Hotel
and my butts was out! I didn’t even know
untill someone called my attention to it. I
had to use my bag to cover it. I was so
uncomfortable, because I didn’t know how
many people that had seen it. I just
sneaked out and went home

Sequin and stars go together
and they add dimension to the
feel glam. If you’re hoping to
get the crowd’s attention, then
this is your choice.
How to Style:
While the red carpet is a
glamorous place, don’t go
overboard with accessories
and shoes. Keeping your
help balance your look hence
a simple earing will work; and
do not wear a shoe covered in
bling for the sake of a matching
look. You you wouldn’t want to
By - Linda Orajekwe
The idea of red carpets started off
as a way to mark the route taken
by head of states and ceremonial
and formal occasions: but as
time as shown, this tradition has
evolved, extending to events
thereby making the red carpet
that place where all the glitz and
glamour take place despite it not
being the main event.
On the red carpet are men and
women who have taken their time
to look their best for the camera.
Since we do not want you to get to
the red carpet looking misplaced,
we have compiled looks that can
inspire you and alternate ways to
style them if possible.
Thigh-high slit
From 2017 to date,
the thigh-high dress is
one dress to rock when
aiming for sexy, bold
and beautiful.
How to Style:
A dress with thigh-high
slit is best worn with
high - heel sandals
to gives the proper
illusion of the length of
your legs. If the dress
is an off shoulder,
accessorize with
matching necklace and
earring to cover the
distance between your
neck and your dress
The plunging neckline:
NECKLACE
The plunging neckline is a risky
choice on the red carpet:, always
worn by women who aim for a
bold and super sexy look. This
look is easily pulled off by women
with smaller breast size but, if you
have a bigger bust, make sure you
have enough room in your dress to
accommodate your breast.
How to Style:
A simple necklace can work here
but if you want no distractions from
all the cleavage exposure or lack
of, keep accessories to just ears
and wrist.
Gold
earring
The one
shoulder dress
After its triumph on the red
carpet in the 80’s, the oneshoulder
dress has become
one of the ideal dresses for
the red carpet especially, if
you want to play it safe and
leave it bare.
How to Style:
Keep your hair off your bare
shoulder so it doesn’t cover
up the shoulder you took
your time to expose. Do not
wear any necklace to avoid
breaking up the clean lines
created by the curve of the
neckline.
Sheer dress:
The love for sheer
on the red carpet is
a fever everywoman
already caught, as
they all want to flaunt
their most flattering
parts. But if you want
to follow this trend,
learn to do it right.
How to Style:
Two things to look out
for if you want to wear
sheer, are placement
and your underwear.
Covering must be
placed right, and your
underwear must not
distract your look.
TOKE
MAKINWA
Genevieve
Nnaji
The backless dress on the
red carpet gives women the
opportunity to flaunt their
toned braless backs.
How to Style:
Ensure your back is pleasing
to the eyes if you intend to
expose it and select a dress
that complements your skin.
The deep cut of your back,
should snag your back to
fit perfectly. Try not to go
overboard with accessory
because, a sensual looking
back gives enough attention
for a night. If you have to
wear a bra due to the size of
your breast, pick a bra with
a band that can serve as an
accessory to the entire look
and not distract.
Pearl
Rhinestone
Earring
Halter neck
dress
Halter
Neck Dress
The halter neck dress
has graced the red
carpet for years; with
celebrities always
looking for a great
twist every time they
step out in it.
How to Style:
Wear with strapless
bra as strap will look
out of place. For no
reason should you
pair this look with a
necklace. Instead,
make your earrings
and bracelet count.
Complete the look
with a pair of strap
sandals.
Metallic
Triple Strap
Heels
Strapless dress
The strapless dress needs
no introduction on the red
carpet as it has been worn
by both stars and royalties.
How to Style:
This red carpet classic can
be styled with a matching
scarf that is either sprawled
over the shoulder, or hung
on the arm and can also
be adorned with delicate
jewellery necklace and a
teardrop earring. For a better
feel of this look, style your
hair up to accentuate your
facial features.
Bonang
Matheba
Ball gown:
Opting for the signature,
voluptuous ball gown, gives
your look a chance to dress
like a traditional princess.
How to Style:
Keep it simple and classy.
Let the volume of your
dress bring the attention
without cluttering the look
with too much jewellery. You
can either style your hair
up or let down and moved
sideways to expose a part of
your neck. A pair of dangling
earrings and matching
necklace will further
enhance the look.
FEATURE
WITH
Amaka
Chika- Mbonu
By - Rita Chioma
Amaka Chika-Mbonu is a
motivational speaker, writer
and author.
She has written books that give
men deep insight into the mind of
a woman, and give women a voice
to speak their heart to men.
Amaka has been a Christian
Marriage Counsellor for over 15
years, and is a certified pre-marital
Counsellor. She is passionate
about making marriages work.
In this interview, she talks about
her latest book, ‘49 Ways To Get
Rid Of The Other Woman (Without
Getting Caught’.
What inspired you to write this new
book?
My inspiration comes from the fact that
infidelity has become the norm rather than
the exception in marriages today. This is
evident even in Christendom. A study from
Christianity Today; an evangelical Christian
periodical, shows that 45 percent of Christians
have done something they consider sexually
inappropriate, 23 percent have had extramarital
intercourse, and 28 percent have
engaged in other forms of extramarital sexual
contact.
Notwithstanding, many of us ‘church folk’,
sometimes, bury our heads in the sand and
pretend it’s not happening unless of course,
you’re caught.
The book title is very interesting and
oddly, specific. How did you settle on
this?
It would seem I have a thing for provocative
and intriguing titles. My first book was,
How To Get Your Wife To Swing From The
Chandelier In A Red Negligée. Watch out for
my third book by His grace. The title is quite
something.
How long did it take you to write the
book?
It took me a little over a year to write it.
What difficulties did you encounter while
writing the book?
I’d say one of the major difficulties was trying
to make the book relatable, without betraying
the many confidences that have been shared with
me over the years. I needed to make sure that no
one would read the book and say, “Oh, I know
who she’s talking about.”
What lessons do you hope people will take
away from the book?
I want women all over the world to realise
that the painful, heart wrenching, humiliating
ordeal of having a third person in your marriage,
can be confronted and dealt with if you believe
your marriage is worth fighting for. I want
women all over the world to realise, and be
convicted in their hearts about who and what
they are in their marriage, and the power they
wield over it, if they are willing to exercise it.
My deepest desire is to restore homes and
marriages, rid them of anything not planted
there by the originator of marriage, wrest power
away from any intruder, (even if invited in
by the husband, who by the way doesn’t have
the legitimate right to do so), and put it back
in the hands of the person in whom it should
legitimately reside—the wife.
Infidelity has been accepted as norm
among men. Do you think there are any
truly faithful man?
Yes, infidelity has indeed become the
aberrant norm, but I still
believe that there are men
out there who have the
discipline, integrity and
self control to be faithful.
Faithful to one woman
—their legitimate wife;
faithful to adhere to the
rules of engagement agreed
upon when the relationship
was embarked upon. It is
inequitable to change the
rules of engagement midgame,
or in this case midmarriage.
Are you worried some
readers will think you’re
gender biased?
NO!
Are there any plans to
write a book addressing
ways to get rid of the
other man?
I think I’ll leave that for a
man to write. I do however
have plans to write a book
who’s working title is likely
to be: Where did you plant
your seed? We’ll see.
Many are losing hope
in the institution of
marriage because of
these issues. What do
you think is the way
forward?
So true. I think it’s
critical that we stop, and
start again. Whatever we
have been doing isn’t working. Something is
so obviously, terribly wrong. The lines have
become blurred with regard to what marriage
is, and what it most definitely is not. We need
to go back to the basics, to what the Being
who the idea of marriage originated from
says about it, and begin to take it from there.
I explored this fully in my game-changing
book about relationships, How To Get Your
Wife To Swing From The Chandelier In A Red
Negligée. A book that gives men deep insight
into the mind of women, and women a voice to
speak their heart to their man.
Amaka Chika- Mbonu
What would you say are the most
common problems young or newlywed
couples face?
Leaving the originator of marriage out
of it, unrealistic expectations and a lack of
communication. This in turn goes back to what
I said before about blurred lines.
How do you suggest they get past these
issues?
Educate themselves about marriage prior to
even meeting their future life-long husband or
wife, and then be sure to enrol in pre-marital
classes before they marry. That would be a
good start.
What projects are you working on now,
and what can we expect from you in the
near future?
I’m working on so many things right now.
Too many to talk about here. A movie, radio,
more books for sure.
Sexually Reconnect
It is natural for spouses to undergo phases of
waxing and waning sexual frequency. This can be
as a result of illness, injury, stress, hectic
schedules, and marital conflicts to mention just a
few. A considerable gap can occur in a couple’s
sex life, such that they go without love making/
intimacy for months or even years. Reduced
sexual activity can affect sex drive especially, after
a period of inactivity, so reconnecting sexually can
be quite awkward. Basically, there are ways to
restore sexual energy in a matrimony that is burnt
out.
It is normal for a healthy sexual desire to ebb,
and flow all the time in the affairs of the heart. Life
is hectic, jobs get in the way, and to a large extent,
and the very thing that ought to be filling us up
better than anything else, gets a back seat.
Desiring to sexually reconnect with your spouse
will make you happier, quarrels/arguments will
subside faster, and you will feel more connected
with your mate. A healthy sex talk is one of the few
conversations that you ought to indulge in with
your spouse on a regular basis; if this is absent,
your relationship can nosedive. Read below tips to
sexually reconnect with your spouse.
Be sure to connect with your own body: first, by
having self love for your being, so as to fully enjoy
the pleasure of love making. This you can achieve
by indulging in exercises such as going for a walk,
yoga, gym or whatever sport you feel is the most
fun for you. ‘’The oxygenation and cellular
restoration not only improves your sexual
enjoyment and stamina, but it helps balance your
immune system and gives your sex drive a short in
the hand.’’
Get rid of stumbling obstacles, if there are
issues that you or your spouse need to trash out
such as, unresolved argument or some stressors
that either you or your mate has been struggling
with. You need to have an open and deep
conversation, so that the sexual energy can start
flowing once more.
Adopt connection exercises, these are super
powerful for helping couples to slow down, drop
into the moment and reconnect with your spouse in
a way that we are not prone to on a constant basis.
Cuddle for about ten minutes, as re-integrating
more touch into our lives is one of the best ways to
with Adesuwa 07011289316 | adesuwaewoigbokhan@hotmail.com
spice sexual connection. Naturally, human beings
crave for touch and are best appreciated when
coming from a loved one. Shut off your internet
devices, if possible, set a timer and cuddle for a
while. The happy chemicals that get released in
your brain will help you sleep better.
Kissing is a deep intimate act, spend ten-fifteen
minutes, don’t rush through it too quickly, slow
down and fully enjoy it. Kissing is a form of
conversation, along the line, some kind of touching,
groping and grinding might occur, that will be cool
but do allow the kissing to be the centre focus for a
while. You will be shocked how its advantages
transfuse throughout all of your foreplay.
Regardless of what you end up doing in your
sex play, remember to play, slow it down, take your
time, enjoy yourself and wholly meet your mate’
satisfaction by taking turns in giving and receiving
phases.
Spoiling sessions: this is a simple exercise as
the name implies. Couples should take turns to
give each other gifts, within uninterrupted block of
time, your preference [ thirty minutes, an hour, a
day ] this is just an exercise, where you
simultaneously practice being selfish while also
honestly, asking for what you want.
Your partner may want you to begin with a kiss,
cuddling, massage, or you may want to indulge in
certain positions for a while, maybe he/she wants
slow, sensual intercourse while listening to their
favorite music. Whatever you decide is up to the
receiver, without doubt, within the confines that you
are both comfortable with.
Continue with what has worked the best for you,
communicates your desires to your spouse, and
make a commitment to make this practice become
a regular routine in your marriage. Make your
connection non-negotiable as nothing matters more
than the bond you feel with your partner.
Your joyousness, healthy body and job
satisfaction is laced to how happy you feel at home.
As a result, make it a priority, as your time and
attention are the most valuable resources that you
will ever have. Give them freely to your spouse and
you will end up with a flourishing relationship.
Get the help of a skilled sex therapist/coach. It’s
often necessary to facilitate the process if situation
gets complicated.
Sweat It Out In
A Sauna
A sauna is a small room designed to be heated to high
temperatures with well controlled humidity. Its use is a
National tradition in Finland and the word sauna is
derived from Finnish “Savuna” that means “in smoke”.
Sauna usage dates back over 1,000 years and they are
popular in other countries under different names. In
Russiait is known as bania/banya, it is known as
Thermae in Rome, Hamman in Turkey, and Sweat
lodge in North America. The Finnish sauna is the most
popular worldwide. In ancient times, saunas were huge
holes in the ground that could accommodate entire
communities or tribes. In the centre of the hole there
was a pit for fire. This hole was covered to prevent cold,
rain and heat from entering to help regulate optimal
temperatures. Today saunas are common in sports
arenas, spa facilities and physical education complexes.
Saunas are used for both recreational and
therapeutic purposes. Most people utilise them for
relaxation and its use provides additional health
benefits. The majority of saunas are built of wood
which is often aromatic thus releasing pleasing
aromas as they heat. There are two main types
of saunas. One is known as dry and the other
wet. Preference is a matter of taste. Wet saunas
are sometimes called steam rooms, and are kept
at lower temperatures than dry saunas (usually
between 37 and 46 degrees Celsius). This
temperature setting is to prevent superheated
water from scalding the skin on contact. Dry saunas
may be kept at much higher temperatures of up to 121
degrees Celsius by keeping the ambient moisture or
humidity down to nearly zero. Many saunas, including
those using electric heaters, have some form of hot
fragrant rocks which may be splashed with water to
release both a short burst of steam, (temporarily
creating the impression of a higher temperature), and
a pleasing aroma. Some wood-burning saunas choose
their fuels very carefully to help stimulate the
participants through the scent of such substances.
It is thought that Saunas are best used to their full
potential by alternating heat and cold by spending
enough time in the sauna to become hot, and then
leaving it to cool back down then repeating the sauna
treatment. Many people enjoy leaving the sauna to
take a dip in a tub or pool of very cold water. Some feel
that this shock is good for the immune system while
others believe it can be detrimental to one’s health.
Patients with high blood pressure should be especially
careful of this immediate transition from hot to cold, as
it spikes blood pressure for brief periods.
Alcohol should never be consumed when using a
sauna and should be particularly avoided in individuals
with low blood pressure. Spending time in intense heat
causes surface capillaries (tiny blood vessels) to dilate,
lowering blood pressure even further. When sauna use
is mixed with alcohol it can cause lightheadedness and
fainting. When used properly, saunas can provide
incredible relaxation, temporarily lower blood pressure
and strengthen the immune system. Finnish saunas
have become very
popular worldwide
and most gyms,
health spas, and
even public pools
now have saunas
available for their
clients.
During a 10 to
20 minute sauna
session, the heart rate
increases by 50 to 75%.
This provides the same
metabolic result as physical
exercise. This increased cardiac load is equivalent to a
brisk walk. During a sauna, blood flow to the skin
increases to as high as 50-70% of cardiac output which
brings nutrients to surface tissue resulting in glowing
healthy skin. Saunas also induce sweating which aids
the comprehensive cleansing of the skin (which is the
largest organ of the body) and sweat glands which is
important as 30% of body waste and toxins are
excreted through the skin. Profuse sweating enhances
the detoxifying capacity of the skin by opening pores
and flushing out impurities from the body.
When taking a sauna session, the skin temperature
rises to about 45 degrees Celsius and internal body
temperature rises to about 39 degrees Celsius.
Exposure to the high heat creates an artificial feverish
state. Fever is part of the body’s natural healing
process as it stimulates the immune system resulting
in an increased production of disease fighting white
blood cells and antibodies. It is advisable to use a
sauna at least once a week and up to 4-5 times if
possible. Increased usage has a greater effect on health.
Using a sauna does assist in weight loss most of which
is fluid loss initially. Using a sauna to help reduce
blood pressure is one of the primary benefits of the
sweat bath which is achieved by the excessive heat that
cause the skin’s capillaries to dilate resulting in a drop
in blood pressure. Individuals with a history of low
blood pressure should consult a physician before using
a sauna for extended periods of time.
Reducing high blood pressure has obvious health
benefits and alleviating stress and tension brings
health and wellness to the mind as well as the body.
The calming aspects of twenty minutes in a sauna are
priceless in terms of long-term health benefits. Not
only does the time in the sauna give the body relief
from tension but it also gives the mind time to unwind,
gather and reflect. The relaxing benefits of sauna use
are probably the most redeeming. Muscles effortlessly
relax after an intense workout. Throughout the day and
work week, toxins build up in muscles which may lead
to fatigue, back and neck pain, migraine headaches and
high blood pressure which can all be alleviated by
sauna use. Some other benefits of sauna usage include
relief from the pain and stiffness of arthritis, healthy
skin and a clear complexion from the detoxification
process as a result of profuse sweating and the relief of
strained and tired muscles after exercise.
In a nutshell, sauna usage:
• Leads to sweating and opening the pores
• Helps to detoxify the body
• Deep cleanses the skin by opening pores and
flushing out impurities from the body
• Relieves muscle and joint pain
• Increases heart rate
• Increases metabolism to promote weight loss
• Relieves tension
• Relaxes the mind and body
• Increases the sense of well-being
• Relieves tension headaches
• Induces deeper, more relaxing sleep
It is important to follow posted guidelines for health
safety when using a sauna.
