Dr. Morad Atif is the Director General of the National Research<br />
Council Canada’s Institute for Research in Construction (NRC-<br />
IRC), Canada’s leading organization in construction research and technology and<br />
in development of Model National Building Codes. He was Director of NRC-IRC’s<br />
Indoor Environment Research Program including the Canadian Centre for Housing<br />
Technology. His team’s multi-disciplinary initiatives related to research and innovation<br />
in the built environment have received international awards.<br />
He joined NRC-IRC as a research officer in 1993, after spending two years as a<br />
faculty member at Texas A&M University’s College of Architecture and Department<br />
of Construction Science, where he earned a Ph.D. in Architecture and Construction<br />
Science. He also holds a Masters degree in Architectural Technology from the<br />
University of California.<br />
Dr. Atif chaired the Executive Committee of the International Energy Agency’s (IEA)<br />
Energy Conservation in Buildings and Community Systems, a collaborative research<br />
partnership among 27 countries, over three consecutive terms. He serves on and<br />
chairs many Boards of Directors related to construction industry, such as Continental<br />
Automated Building Association and International Council on Buildings (CIB).<br />
Dr. Atif is the author of more than 80 technical publications and the recipient of<br />
many innovation, leadership and management awards<br />
Malcolm Bell<br />

Prof. Malcolm Bell is Emeritus Professor of Surveying and<br />
Sustainable Housing at Leeds Metropolitan University. Following<br />
retirement from his substantive post at the end of 2010 he continues to work<br />
in the field. He is a building surveyor with over 30 years research experience in<br />
surveying and housing. He has co-authored three books on energy efficient and<br />
low carbon housing, numerous journal and conference publications and a series of<br />
major research reports published by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation, and the UK<br />
Government. He has led UK Government and Zero Carbon Hub working groups on<br />
the building regulations and the implementation of zero carbon housing policy. His<br />
work on the performance gap between expected and actual energy performance<br />
in new and renovated housing is exerting a major influence over UK policy on low<br />
and zero carbon buildings. He has served on the policy and research teams for the
uilding regulations reviews of 2002, 2006 and 2010. Currently, he is working on<br />
the review for 2013. His continuing research interests include technical and policy<br />
issues relating to the development of sustainable housing (closing the performance<br />
gap in particular), in both new-build and the existing stock.<br />

Pierre Bourrier, civil engineer graduate from Ecole des Ponts et<br />
Chaussees (Paris) is now retired. He has developed his career in<br />
the field of construction, and especially in steel frame buildings.<br />
Pierre Bourrier was acting as Senior Vice President Construction Arcelor, the steel<br />
producer Luxemburg based, in order to increase the connection and industrial<br />
efficiency between industry and downstream users such as architects, structural and<br />
thermal engineers ... He occupied the chair of the European Steel Design Educational<br />
Programme, a joint initiative to disseminate Eurocode amongst construction<br />
<strong>com</strong>munities.<br />
In 2005, Pierre Bourrier has been elected as President of Fondation Batiment Energie,<br />
a state acknowledged foundation for research in the field of energy conservation in<br />
new and refurbished buildings.<br />

over 20 legislative documents of the state construction norms and<br />
national standards level. Among them are such documents as state construction<br />
norms on thermal insulation of buildings, requirements to energy saving in<br />
buildings in the view of safety provisions, requirements for design, installation and<br />
maintenance of exterior wall structures with façade thermal insulation, and other.<br />
Currently Dr Farenyuk also heads the Technical Committee 302 ‘Energy Efficiency of<br />
Buildings’ under the Ministry of Regional Development, Construction and Residential<br />
Economy of Ukraine authorized to improve and develop Ukrainian norms on energy<br />
efficiency.<br />
Christopher Gorse<br />

Chris Gorse is a Professor at the Leeds Sustainability Institute – Leeds<br />
Metropolitan University. His background is in Engineering and<br />
Project Management; he has undertaken consultancy and research<br />
in domestic, industrial and <strong>com</strong>mercial building and their infrastructure. He holds<br />
a first class degree in Building, Masters in Construction Law and PhD construction<br />
interaction and performance. He is author of best selling construction technology,<br />
refurbishment and management books with over 70 journal and conference<br />
publications to his name.<br />
Currently he is director of the Leeds Sustainability Institute and leads the Low Carbon<br />
Sustainability Research Group CeBE which has amassed the most <strong>com</strong>prehensive set<br />
of actual building thermal performance data in the UK. Research and publications,<br />
such as The Retrofit Challenge: Delivering Low Carbon Buildings for Low Carbon<br />
Futures and International research with <strong>Knauf</strong>, related to the thermal performance of<br />
buildings and associated building physics are changing perceptions and expectations<br />
of construction. Chris also sits on <strong>com</strong>mittee for the Association for Researchers<br />
in Construction Management, the Chartered Institute of Building Innovation and<br />
Research panel and leads a sub task group for the International Energy Agency,<br />
Annex 58 on whole scale building testing.
Petr Hajek<br />

Petr Hajek is Professor of Civil Engineering at Czech Technical<br />
University in Prague, Faculty of Civil Engineering. Currently he is Vice<br />
Dean for Research and Head of Department of Building Structures. He is an expert<br />
in sustainable construction of buildings, <strong>com</strong>plex assessment and rating of building<br />
performance quality, LCA, optimization of concrete structures and use of recycled<br />
materials. P. Hajek developed and lectures MSc course IBD (Integrated Building<br />
Design) focused on Sustainable Building Design and LCA-based assessment of<br />
building performance.<br />
P. Hajek is Czech representative in the CEN TC 350 <strong>com</strong>mittee and a head of TNK<br />
149 responsible for implementation of CEN 350 Standards into Czech construction<br />
practice. He is vice chairman of fib (International Federation for Structural Concrete)<br />
Commission 3 – Environmental Aspects in Design and Construction of Concrete<br />
Structures and a head of fib C3 TG C3.7 – Integrated life cycle assessment of<br />
concrete structures. Since 2005 he is a board member of iiSBE – International<br />
Initiative for Sustainable Built Environment and chairman of CSBS iiSBE Czech –<br />

Seán Harrington<br />

Seán Harrington is the principal at Seán Harrington Architects, a<br />
design and research-based architectural practice based in Dublin,<br />
with experience and expertise in a wide range of fields from masterplanning,<br />
urban regeneration, <strong>com</strong>munity consultation, conservation and sustainability<br />
to the design of places, cities and neighborhoods, buildings, bridges and other urban<br />
interventions. The work of the practice has won many Irish and international awards in<br />
recent years, including the Irish Architect of the Year 2010, RIAI Best Sustainable Building in<br />
Ireland Award 2009 and the Green Good Design Award 2009 from the European Centre<br />
for Architecture, Art, Design and Urban Studies and the Chicago Athenaeum (Museum of<br />
Architecture and Design). Seán’s work has been featured in many architectural exhibitions,<br />
including being chosen to represent Ireland at the Architects Council of Europe 20 th<br />
Anniversary Exhibition on Sustainable Architecture, at the European Parliament building<br />
and the Palais des Beaux Arts in Brussels. Seán has taught at many schools of architecture<br />
and has lectured widely on sustainability, housing and urban design in Ireland, Russia,<br />
Spain, and UK and his architectural work and writings are widely published, including in<br />
Ireland, Switzerland, Germany, China and the UK. Seán is currently an external examiner<br />

Arnold Janssens is associate professor of building physics and<br />
building construction applications at Ghent University since 1999.<br />
He graduated as a civil engineer-architect (building technology option) at the<br />
K.U.Leuven in 1990. He obtained a doctorate in applied sciences (civil engineering)<br />
in 1998 with a dissertation on ‘Reliable control of internal condensation in lightweight<br />
roof systems: calculation and assessment methods’ (supervisor Prof. H. Hens).<br />
At Ghent University he teaches courses on ‘building physics’,’ building acoustics and<br />
lighting technology’, ‘building services’: heating and ventilation’ and ‘building physics:<br />
special topics’ within the architectural and civil engineering programme. He is scientific<br />
coordinator of the postgraduate programme ‘Energy technology in buildings’ which is<br />
organized every year since 2006. His research interests are the modeling of heat, air<br />
and moisture transfer in buildings, the study of energy performance and indoor climate<br />
of buildings and the energy renovation of existing housing. He is in charge of the<br />
research group building physics, construction and services (BFG) within the department<br />
of architecture and urban planning. Arnold Janssens is IABP and AIVC board member<br />
and ASHRAE member. He was an expert involved in several research projects within the<br />
ECBCS-programme of the International Energy Agency.
Adrian Joyce<br />

Secretary General of EuroACE, the European Alliance of<br />
Companies for Energy Efficiency in Buildings. His role involves<br />
the day-to-day management of the affairs of EuroACE, bringing<br />
support to the working structure, preparing documentation, advising the Members,<br />
the General Assembly and the Board of Directors on issues that affect the energy<br />
efficiency of buildings. This includes monitoring the work of the EU Institutions, with a<br />
view to distilling those aspects that are of importance to the energy efficiency sector<br />
and to the establishment of the market conditions that will encourage, among other<br />
things, a significant increase in energy-related renovations to existing buildings.<br />
He also takes particular responsibility for technical issues including projects and the<br />
management of surveys, studies and reports. He is also the Campaign Director of the<br />
Renovate Europe Campaign, which has been initiated by EuroACE in order to bring<br />
about a threefold increase in renovation rates of existing buildings by 2020 and to<br />
ensure that, by 2050, all existing buildings are at least 80 % more energy efficient<br />
than they were in 2005.<br />
Adrian M Joyce is a professionally qualified architect who, having graduated from<br />
University College Dublin in 1984, spent 17 years in private practice (working<br />
in the UK, France, and Belgium and in his native country, Ireland) before getting<br />
involved full-time in architectural policy. He was, for 18 months <strong>com</strong>mencing in<br />
January 2002, the Practice Director of the Royal Institute of the Architects of Ireland<br />
before moving to Brussels to join the staff at the Secretariat of the Architects’ Council<br />
of Europe where he became Director before leaving in July 2011. He also holds<br />
a part-time post teaching Construction Technology at the Catholic University of<br />
Louvain-le-Neuve, Faculty of Architecture, Architectural Engineering and Urbanism –<br />
LOCI. He is also a Board Member of eceee (the European Council for an energy<br />
Efficient Economy) and a Member of the Steering Committee of the European<br />
Coalition for Energy Savings.<br />

advisors is involved in developing solutions for the low carbon agenda in both<br />

such as, Barratt’s, Audi, H&M, DECC, CLG, M&S, etc. Oliver is a Material Engineer<br />
by profession and has developed obtained patents on a number of products and<br />
processes. He currently sits on a number of Government advisory boards including<br />
the Green Deal and Zero Carbon Homes. He has advised a number of corporates<br />
and medium sized organisations on change management related to carbon and<br />
efficiency. He has also been instrumental in developing collaborations between<br />
Industry and Government to tackle key issues facing the sector, these include<br />
SMARTLIFE (£12m European project), AIMC4 (£6.3m TSB contract), Space (£20m<br />
of site construction/manufacturing project) and Victorian Terrace (£3m challenge to<br />

Robert Nuij works for the European Commission, Directorate-<br />
General for Energy, as a policy officer in the unit responsible for<br />
energy efficiency. His tasks focus on the implementation of the Energy Performance of<br />
Buildings Directive, which includes work on standardisation, and financial support for<br />
energy efficiency in buildings.<br />
He started his career in the European Commission as a policy officer in the<br />
Directorate-General for Environment where he was involved in the development of<br />
integrated product policy and the European Eco-label. Subsequently, he worked for<br />
the Directorate-General for Health and Consumers in the area of product safety,<br />
where he was responsible for the co-ordination of Member State market surveillance<br />
efforts, toy safety and international co-operation, in particular with China.<br />
Prior to joining the Commission, Mr. Nuij worked as a senior consultant for an<br />
international environmental consultancy with an emphasis on environmental product<br />
policy, eco-design and waste management. Mr. Nuij is a Dutch national and holds a<br />
Master of Science degree in Industrial Design Engineering from the Delft University of<br />

Staf Roels is head of the Building Physics Section, University of<br />
Leuven (KU LEUVEN), Belgium. He earned his master title of civil<br />
engineer-architect at the same university in 1990. After gaining<br />
practical experience as civil engineer and architect he returned to the KU LEUVEN<br />
in 1996, where he started working as research fellow. In 2000 he defended his<br />
Ph.D. thesis, entitled “Unsaturated moisture transport in heterogeneous limestone”,<br />
at the Faculty of Applied Sciences of the KU LEUVEN. In 2001 he became parttime<br />
assistant professor, in 2004 full-time associate professor and since 2007 full<br />
professor at the Building Physics Section, KU LEUVEN. He lectures on building<br />
physics, building construction, performance based design and applied building<br />
physics. His research mainly focuses on moisture transport in porous building<br />
materials and the analysis of the hygrothermal behaviour and durability of building<br />
constructions. In his research he often <strong>com</strong>bines refined numerical techniques with<br />
advanced experimental methods. He published more than 150 research papers of<br />
which 45 in international journals. At the moment Staf Roels has a lead task in some<br />
national and international research projects in the area of heat, air and moisture<br />
transfer in building constructions and in the area of integral building performance<br />
assessment.<br />

Peter holds a Masters degree in Engineering and Management Studies from<br />

Peter is a visiting professor at IE University in Madrid, an active member of the<br />

Industry in Spain. Peter regularly presents at public forum on the economics, markets<br />

Architect researcher Mark Zimmermann has worked for more<br />
than two decades on the energy research in building sector at<br />
Empa, the Swiss National Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology.<br />
He was Operating Agent of IEA ECBCS Annex 50 “Prefabricated systems for low<br />
energy renovation of residential buildings”, that developed new methods, based<br />
on prefabrication, for energetic renovation of existing building stock. He is known<br />
and respected in the international research scene on energy efficient buildings and<br />
passive houses with numerous positions of trust in various research projects and<br />
organisations. He has published articles and held conference presentations among<br />
others on following topics: passive cooling of buildings, vacuum insulation solutions<br />
in construction, new methods for energetic refurbishments, 2000 Watt Society -<br />
the Swiss vision about sustainable society and its demonstration building Forum<br />
Chriesbach. Mark Zimmermann and his research team have recently developed SELF,<br />
a self sufficient space unit for working and living. It is independent from external<br />
energy and water supply, and it is demonstrating technologies for buildings of the<br />
future.

years. After a degree in Economics at University College London,<br />
he started his professional life in the building materials industry.<br />
Tony held various positions in the industry both in the UK and overseas before he<br />
started his career with <strong>Knauf</strong> in 1998 as Managing Director of the <strong>Knauf</strong> Drywall<br />
business in the UK. After having taken over increased levels of responsibility at the<br />
international level within <strong>Knauf</strong>, he became in 2003 Group CEO of <strong>Knauf</strong> <strong>Insulation</strong><br />
and a member of the Management Board of the <strong>Knauf</strong> Group. Whilst working for a<br />
global <strong>com</strong>pany was not in his career plan, it has given him opportunities to travel<br />
and work outside the UK, something he has enjoyed and which has shaped the<br />
person he is today. He has a passion for his work and the people he works with.<br />

Dominique Bossan has been Managing Director Eastern Europe<br />

After a few years working in sales at Philips Consumers Electronics<br />
in France, he joined Owens Corning in 1994, and held several operational positions<br />
in the USA, in the Netherlands and in Belgium, such as Commercial Director for the<br />
Benelux and Eastern Europe, and Marketing Director. He was appointed Business<br />
Development Director as the Company was moving from Owens Corning Building<br />
Materials to <strong>Knauf</strong> <strong>Insulation</strong> 10 years ago. A graduate from the University of<br />
Economics in Lyon, France, he holds a MBA from the University of Georgia, USA.<br />

Liège in Belgium, Frédéric Delcuve started his professional career in<br />
the Construction industry in 1991. Frederic held various positions in<br />
the Bouygues Construction Group in France. After holding various levels of responsibility<br />
in the Bouygues design offices, he joined the Global Research & Development<br />
organization of the ArcelorMittal Group as a Manager of Steel Construction Research<br />
activities in 2001. This has given him opportunities to develop his knowledge of the<br />
construction market and more specifically the building envelope and building physics.<br />
He joined <strong>Knauf</strong> <strong>Insulation</strong> end of 2010 as Head of Building Science in charge of<br />
developping the understanding of real in-situ performance in buildings.<br />

Mark Leverton began his career at Parker Pen then Gillette before emigrating to<br />
South America from 1993 to 2001 where he held a variety of positions in Marketing<br />
consultancy, Logistics, Sales and Marketing before fulfilling the role of Commercial<br />
and then Managing Director at Vidrios Lirquén (Float Glass) in Chile. He was then<br />
promoted to the role of President for Pilkington Glass France before taking over as<br />
Managing Director for the South West Europe region.<br />
Mark has more than 15 years’ experience in the <strong>Insulation</strong> business and currently<br />
heads up since 2006 the <strong>Knauf</strong> <strong>Insulation</strong> Group’s Western European region which<br />

sustainability. Before joining <strong>Knauf</strong> <strong>Insulation</strong> in 2007, Barry headed<br />
up the Climate and Energy practice area at the Brussels based think tank and<br />
consultancy, The Centre, having previously worked for the US based public affairs<br />
firm, Fleishman-Hilliard. Before working in the private sector, Barry worked for the
European Commission’s Director General for Environment, where he was responsible<br />
for drafting the original legislation on CO 2 labeling for cars. Barry began his career<br />
working for civil society organizations, notably the European Federation for Transport<br />
and Environment and the European Citizens Action Service. Barry studied English<br />
and French law at University.<br />

John has overall responsibility for the Northern Europe region which<br />
<strong>com</strong>prises UK, Ireland, Denmark, Finland, Norway & Sweden.<br />
John originally joined <strong>Knauf</strong> <strong>Insulation</strong> as Sales Director in April 2006. In his role as<br />
Sales Director he was responsible for the development and implementation of the<br />
region’s <strong>com</strong>mercial strategy and objectives. He led a large sales force with the aim<br />
of improving profitability and increasing market share.<br />
John started his sales career in 1989 with Hepworth Building Products, over the<br />
following decade he worked for Marley Building Materials and Marley Roofing<br />
Products as Area Sales Manager and Business Development Manager respectively.<br />
In early 2000 John joined Thermalite, a division of Marley Building Products, as<br />
their Sales Director. Within this role he had responsibility for all external sales and<br />
technical services. Finally, before joining <strong>Knauf</strong> <strong>Insulation</strong> John spent 3 years as<br />
European Sales Director at Hepworth Drainage directing the <strong>com</strong>mercial strategy of<br />
the <strong>com</strong>pany’s various product sectors.<br />

Remco Teulings is Managing Director of <strong>Knauf</strong> <strong>Insulation</strong>. He took<br />
up this position in June 2009, reporting directly to the Group CEO.<br />
Remco holds the overall responsibility for the Central European<br />
region which <strong>com</strong>prises Germany, Austria, Switzerland and the Northern Balkan<br />
region. In addition, he is responsible for the European OEM and Technical <strong>Insulation</strong><br />
business as well as the Global Heradesign Business (suspended ceilings). Remco<br />
originally joined <strong>Knauf</strong> <strong>Insulation</strong> as Group Marketing Director Europe & CIS in<br />
February 2007. In his role as Group Marketing Director he was responsible for the<br />
development of the marketing strategy and implementation of this strategy across<br />
the regions. Before joining <strong>Knauf</strong> <strong>Insulation</strong>, he was working more than 5 years for<br />
Ansell Healthcare (medical devices) and held different roles such as Director Retail<br />
and General Manager UK and his last role was Marketing Director for Europe,<br />
Middle East and Africa. Before this, he held several <strong>com</strong>mercial leadership positions<br />
(purchasing, operations and business development) across various countries for<br />
Royal Numico a large public <strong>com</strong>pany active in infant and clinical nutrition. He<br />
started his career with a family-owned business in the luxury apparel industry (Oilily)<br />
where he was responsible for creating and managing the business unit ‘Accessories’.<br />
Remco is of Dutch nationality, he is married to Caroline and together with their 3<br />

Frans van Zon is Marketing Director Europe & CIS for <strong>Knauf</strong><br />

development and deployment of marketing strategy in KI, including product &<br />
systems development, marketing <strong>com</strong>munications, public affairs, building physics,<br />
sustainable development and marketing intelligence.<br />
Before starting at <strong>Knauf</strong> <strong>Insulation</strong>, Frans built a successful career in consumer<br />
durables, spending 10 years with Bosch Power Tools in Europe and North America,<br />
where he last held the position of Director Global Marketing & Product Development.<br />
After Bosch, he joined TTI Floor Care North America as VP Marketing & Development<br />
on the Hoover and Dirt Devil brands.

Joey Viselli is responsible for developing, implementing, and<br />
evaluating all aspects of <strong>Knauf</strong> <strong>Insulation</strong> North America’s<br />
strategic marketing plans, initiatives, and objectives for all product<br />
lines across the United States and Canada. He provides oversight to marketing<br />
department managers and directors including: Market and Channel Development<br />
Managers, Business Analysis and Pricing, Product and Application Development<br />
Marketing Managers, and the Director of Strategic Marketing and Communications.<br />
A graduate of The University of Alabama, Joey boasts nearly 20 years of sales and<br />
marketing experience across a range of consumer businesses. Joey spent the first 15<br />
years of his career with Procter & Gamble in sales and brand management of several<br />
respected brands, including Pampers, Bounty ® , Charmin ® , Puffs ® , and Tide ® . During<br />
his tenure as the Senior Brand Manager in the global air care products business unit,<br />
he spearheaded the transformation of Febreze ® into the fastest-growing brand in the<br />
P&G Fabric & Home Care business.<br />
Joey joined Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company as the Director of Marketing Services<br />
in 2005. While serving as the “voice of Goodyear” with industry experts and<br />
investors, Joey led a restructuring, turnaround, and expansion of Goodyear’s largest<br />
business unit resulting in three years of record growth for the <strong>com</strong>pany.<br />
Brett Welch<br />

Welch’s interest in the efficiency of buildings began during his<br />
studies of Environmental Science and Economics at North Carolina<br />
State University. He went on to work in the design and construction<br />
of residences implementing natural and passive building techniques, including<br />
straw bale and adobe building envelopes, utilizing site harvested and waste stream<br />
materials. Later he worked at Advanced Energy, a non-profit building science<br />
consulting firm, administering a guaranteed utility bill program for low in<strong>com</strong>e<br />
households. He is a new member of the KINA team working on a variety of new<br />
initiatives aimed at creating increased efficiencies in the built environment.<br />
