Jeepster - Disney Experience One night the telephone rang just as my wife and I were sitting down to dinner. “It’s another telemarketer,” Carol said, “Don’t answer it.” But I did, and instead of a sales call, it was Jerry from Boston Casting calling. “Would you like to have your Jeepster appear in a Disney Production?” “Well yes but.....” Jerry continued, “Would you allow us to put dirt on your car?” All I’ve done since I restored my 1949 Jeepster is remove dirt from it. I was not happy with the thought of dirt being sprayed on it. “Next question: Would you allow us to spray artificial snow on it ---and will you leave it on the set outside overnight?” That car has never been out overnight. “No way,” I thought. “What is the movie,” I asked? (I would die before I would allow my car to be in a remake of a film like”The Goddess of the Seventh Galaxy”) or some crazy sci-fi. Jerry’s answer was very interesting. “It’s the story of the rescue by the Coast Guard of the crew from a distressed oil tanker off the coast of Chathanm in 1952.” (With a $85 million budget.) “Your 1949 Willys Jeepster was manufactured close to that year, and we would love to use it.” “O my God, it’s the Pendleton rescue,” I thought. Hearing that, I immediately agreed to be a part of it. Especially since I live in Chatham, MA. where this drama took place in 1952. Ten weeks later I received the first cast call - It was for overnight filming in the town of Norwell, MA. Where they had a re-creation of The Chatham Grange Hall. I was instructed that for every appearance of my vehicle, I must send a confirming email that I intended “to meet the call.” I promptly sent the email and arranged to have the Jeepster brought to Norwell in an enclosed trailer. (Norwell is approximately 60 miles from my house and it was 22 degrees.) Our work day started at “wardrobe” at 2:30 p.m. And ran through the night (at 22 degrees) until 5:30 a.m. Striving for age-appropriate everything, the property crew made round-lensed, gold-framed prescription eye glasses for me. They had copies of 1952 Massachusetts license plates made for all the antique cars. Approximately 200 crew swarmed over the sets. Production assistants (PAs) taking care of special effects, lighting, camera work, wardrobe, makeup, stunts, meal preparations etc. Next there were to be five days of filming in Chatham, two of which were to be through the night. I met the call for three of those five days and then a bad respiratory condition made me sign out at midnight and call Carol for a ride home. The Jeepster had to be left where it was because all the vehicles were positioned using a GPS. In addition to driving my car in various scenes, I did appear as “a concerned citizen” in one scene with Holly Grainger. I learned that they really do still say , “RRRolling....aaand action.... and cut.” I also learned to dread the word “reset” because that means do it again. One scene required 10 takes. At the end of the filming I was told that the Director felt that a yellow Jeepster with white walls was too sporty to appear in a docudrama, so it was cut out of the scenes except for a shot from a camera equipped helicopter in dim light. I am very glad I did not miss the chance for me and my car to be in this film: it truly added sparkle to my life! As a matter of fact, I enjoyed it very much except for getting Bronchitis. The afternoon will be free for more exploration on your own, In the late afternoon we will join together for our WOJC Banquet and private tour of the America on Wheels Museum. We’ll have 1 1/2 hours before dinner to tour the museum. We will then have our banquet in the Hubcap Cafe. There will be additional time afterward to enjoy the museum if desired. This is an extra special treat as we will be the only visitors in the museum for the entire time! We hope you will be inspired to join us in September! See you there!
