Editor’s Letter
The days were, when songs by Nigerian artists were
anathema to most nightclubs. The DJs wouldn’t touch it
with a long pole and they hardly got airplay or reviews on
radio and television. In retrospect, you wouldn’t blame
them. The lyrics, and production were nothing to write
home about.
The 80s particularly, was one in which American artists
in particular churned out great songs, parties came alive
and the world danced. Till date, many are still stuck in
this era.
From the 90s, things began to look up for Nigerian
artists. By the turn of the century in year 2000, the
creative skills of Nigerian artistes were well horned and
the juices just flowed. The rest they say is history.
Nigerian musicians like their counterparts in the movie
industry, have been great exports for this country, erasing
inglorious memories of Nigeria created by bad politics.
Today, Nigerian artistes wether rocking street style like
Olamide, or crooning love songs like Simi or 2baba, or
having international collaborations like Wizkid, their efforts
are paying off, the awards are coming so also, the bank
alerts.
On our cover today, we celebrate 15 top Nigerian
musicians whose songs are rocking the airwaves. They are
not only good with their songs, but also great with their
style. Page 8-11.
We asked some celebrities to reveal their favourite
artiste and song. Their responses shows how differently we
see things. Page 7
It’s gradually getting to that time of the year when
models and designers, take to the run way for fashion
shows. But out on the streets, guests walk their own
runway with street swag. Know how to put a street look
together with these wardrobe pieces compiled by Linda
Orajekwe. Page 4-5.
It’s the entertainment edition. Do
enjoy it and have a great Sunday.
Street Style
Essentials
by - Linda Orajekwe
Fashion week is fast approaching: and if there is one interesting aspect of
fashion week everyone loves to be a part of, it’s the street style. Sometimes,
this is not possible because we do not have the right pieces in our wardrobe
to mix and match, to pull off the street style look.
Before we are hit with another fashion week and you are left with nothing
to wear, here are some wardrobe pieces and accessories that will help you
slay and if you are lucky, make headline.
Dramatic and
Colourful look
Get all the
attention on you
with a dramatic
or colourful
piece of
clothing.
Socks
Wearing socks
in a fashion
week
automatically
lets everyone
give you the
fashionista tag
and if it flows
with your look,
that’s even a
plus. You can
choose from the
trendy net to the
classic plain.
Graphic Tees
Get all the attention on you
with a dramatic or colourful
piece of clothing.
Sneakers
Your sneakers are the most
comfortable accessory you
can have on the street:
especially, if you’re there to
have fun. You don’t want to
wear heels and risk blisters
that’ll bar you from slaying
after that.
Dress
From flirty to sexy to fun, getting
your dresses set for the street
can help you get all these vibes.
Your short bodycon dress will
make you look sexy,while a
short shift dress can be flirty. To
get caught on the fun street, pick
a free maxi dress and complete
the look with a pair of sneakers
to show you give no care than to
be fab on the street.
Ankara Combo
Since the present appreciation of Ankara
in our fashion, everyone wants to infuse
a piece of Ankara in his or her look; as
small as a pocket square for your suit, hair
accessories, or even going bold with it and
making it the full look.
FASHION
Statement
Accessories
From arm accessories, leg chains down to
statement necklaces, these pieces will give you an
edge on the street and get cameras capturing your
every move. So start gathering them for a good
show on the street.
Statement
Purses & Bags
Let your purse or bag get the attention
your clothes might not give you. A
statement bag makes you look
fashionable, and since they come in
different forms, it gives people
something more interesting than your
look to check out.
Oversized Clothes
Be it a palazzo, oversize shirt, skirt, big rolled
up pant or oversized polo, the street style
gives you the opportunity to style everything
you haven’t worked in a long while, or already
thinking about trashing.
Sunglasses
It’s street style and your street is your
runway. However, the reality is, just like
you, the sun also comes out to slay and
you wouldn’t want your eyes to suffer
would you? So as you protect your eyes
from the harshness of the sun, let the
sunglasses boost your look and make you
fly!
Strappy Sandals
: Looking to get eyes
stuck to your look, get
yourself strappy sandals.
It’ll help you make all the
statement you want your
look to make. If it’s with a
maxi dress or a short
dress, to let your legs
come out to play, your
strappy sandals will
make it look good while
they’re at it.
Caps
Gve a twist to that feminine look with a baseball hat, giving you
the tomboyish vibe that’s always welcome on the street. You can
also wear any headpiece, from bandana to Fedora hat and
anything that helps you stand out.
Artsy Clothing
: It’s a fashion week and in an era
where being an art lover is cool, you
can look cooler rocking some artistic
pieces that show a side of you nobody
knows. Pick an artsy look that
represents your style either classic or
chic, there’s always room for all.
Shorts
Show off legs as you aim for comfort. This is a
common piece in fashion weeks. It makes you
look in place while on the street.
Jacket
This is a street style staple worn
mostly over a tee on a air of jeans
trouser or shorts. You can rock the
short leather jacket or long jackets
to layer your look.
by - Rita Chioma
Nigerian celebrities may have certain things in common, but when it
comes to music, they seem to differ.
Everyone experiences certain moments where they want to express
themselves in different ways and sometimes, music is the best
companion during those moments.
Some of them have picked their favourite music artistes and their all
time best track.
I never get bored
with Simi
Belinda Effah, Actress
Simi is my all time
favourite. Her voice is
unique and I can relate
to all her songs. She is
not a noice maker, she
sings from the depth of
her heart. In fact, I
love her songs.
She is such a
huge talent. I love
Joromi, Smile for
me , Owambe
etc . She is a
masterpiece I
can listen to her
over and over
again without
getting bored .
Tuface Idibia is a
legend I love his
African Queen
track. It has been
ages but it
remains my all
time best.
Best Track
Inem Peter, Actress
I’m emotionally
attached to Kiss
Daniels Duro. I
love the tract. I
also love If Love
Is A Crime by
2baba. But Kizz
Daniel’s track
comes first.
Tope Alabi’s songs
Biodun
Okeowo,
Actress
I love Tope Alabi.
Her music
inspires me and
gingers
(awakens) me
spiritually. Same
as that of
Evangelist Ojo
Ade and Bola
Are. They all lift
my spirit.
Asa’s music
inspires me
Monica Friday, Actress
My all time best artiste is Asa. Especially, the
track; “What you are looking for is within you”.
She inspires me a lot.
Fela is irreplaceable
Funnybone, Comedian
I’m a die-hard fan
of Fela. The best of
his songs I love is
Yellow fever. His
songs bring you
back to reality.
I really like Bez
Idakula
Tope Tedela, Actor
In recent years, I think
one artiste I have come to
really like is Bez Idakula.
Choosing my favourite
song of his is like passing
a camel through the eye
of a needle.
For this purpose,
however, let me
choose a song
titled The Good,
The Bad, The
Ugly from his
debut album
- Rotimi Agbana
In 2017, the music scene was replete
with good music from greenhorns and
top shots in the music-making craft. So
far, 2018 has equally been characterized
by stiff competition, as the likes of
2Baba, Wizkid, Davido, Tiwa Savage,
Niniola, Simi, Falz, Adekunle Gold, and
a few others, continue to dish out good
music.
From what is coming out of the music
industry in Nigeria, it’s obvious that the
Falz
With his controversial music video,
‘This is Nigeria’ still on the lips of
critics and music pundits, Lawyer
turned rapper/actor, Falz, remains at an
undisputed position on the music scene.
The ‘Bahd guy’, (as he is sometimes called)
who bristled with entertainment extraordinaire
in 2017, ending it with his debut concert
tagged, ‘The Falz Experience’, has since the
beginning of the year, released a number of
good songs including; ‘Child of the world’,
‘Boogie down’, ‘This is Nigeria’ among others.
These songs have since become a cynosure
on radio airplay and TV video rotations.
Simi
Besides having a velvety voice that delivers unadulterated
justice to any tune she jumps on, the release of her album,
debut concert, stellar stage performances at top industry
shows, and interesting music videos, X3M sensation,
Simi, has crawled her way into the hearts of lovers of
good music with her charming mien, looks and party jams.
Irrespective of stiff competition from Tiwa Savaga, Yemi
Alade and Niniola, she remains on music charts with good
songs including ‘One Kain’, ‘Owambe’, ‘Aimasiko’, and
even ‘Joromi’, one out of her many hit songs in 2017.
At the Headies 2018, Simi carted away three awards; Best
Recording of the Year, Best Single and Best Album for her
second studio album, “Simisola”.

established musicians are taking their
are proving they can give the older ones
they are springing, Nigerians are loving
their efforts.
In no particular order, here is a list of top
15 artistes currently rocking the music
scene with hit songs.
REPORTAGE
Wizkid
Though he may not have released as
many singles as expected in 2018,
Wizkid aka ‘Star Boy’, continues
to top charts with his song, ‘Soco’,
whose video has garnered over
14million Youtube views. His brilliant
collaborations with Skepta on ‘Bad
Energy’, Kizz Daniel on ‘For You’, Afro
B on ‘Joanna’, L.A.X on ‘Nobody’,
Duncan Mighty on ‘Fake Love’, Olamide
on ‘Kana’, DJ Spinall on ‘Nowo’,
and MHD on ‘Bella’ have been on
constant replay on top radio/TV
stations locally and internationally.
Recall that he promised to continue
ruling the music scene locally and
internationally at the 2017 edition
of Headies awards. So far, the
award-winning pop star has not
failed to keep his name on the
lips of music pundits.
2Baba (2Face)
‘African Queen’ crooner, Innocent Idibia,
popularly known as ‘2Baba, is a true
depiction of the saying that “Stars are born
but not made.” Little wonder after almost
two decades, he is still rubbing shoulders
with a new generation of artistes who have
since changed the music game with brilliant
trends. His latest song ‘Amaka’, featuring
Davido Music Worldwide act, Peruzzi, has
been topping charts since its release. With
over 1.6million Youtube views to the video
of the song which was released barely
two months ago, 2Baba has been able to
steal the show from the likes of Wizkid and
Davido.
Davido
After stealing many hearts in 2017 with his hit
songs ‘Fia’, ‘If’, ‘Like that’ and crowning it with
his 30Billion concert which continue to top
discussions, Wizkid’s stiff competitor, David
Adeleke, aka Davido, has experimented with
nearly every strategy to maintain his position
at the top in 2018. From the release of his first
single in 2018, ‘Flora my flawa’, to dedicating a
love song, ‘Assurance’ to his girlfriend, Chioma,
he has undisputedly stayed at the top of charts.
His collaborations with DJ Ecool on ‘Ada’, Larry
Gaaga on ‘Doe’, Dremo on ‘Kpa’, and Mayorkun
on ‘Bobo’, have been an icing on the cake for
him. He is currently in ecstatic anticipation of a
yet-to be released project which he says may
mark a turning point in his music career.
Tekno
Besides always courting
controversies, MMMG artiste,
Tekno, aka ‘Slim Daddy’, has
always boasted of being in a world
of his own. So, it’s not surprising
that he has been rocking the music
industry since the release of his
2018 music projects ‘Jogodo’, ‘Your
love’ and ‘Anyhow’.
Olamide
Tagged ‘The king of street music’, Olamide
has since earned himself a pedigree no
other street music artiste may surpass
because, he has continued to prove he is
the king of the jungle. Though ‘Wo’ is one
of his hit songs from 2017, it continues
to rule the airwaves alongside ‘Science
Student’, ‘Kana’, ‘Ronaldo’, to mention a
few. How would an artiste who drops songs
back to back not enjoy massive airplay?
Take it or leave it, Olamide has since the
beginning of 2018, ruled the streets with
his songs which have long become street
anthems.
Adekunle
Gold
After establishing himself as
the king of alternative highlife
music in Nigeria, Adekunle
Gold has since continued to
add feathers to his cap, with
his music that has a way of
igniting romance between
lovers. With the success of
his sophomore album, ‘About
further prove his worth and
stay on the list of artistes
who thrill.
With over 2.7million Youtube views
to the video of her most recent song,
With his recent songs, ‘Overload’ and ‘London
to the music scene after a brief hiatus, and it has
been a good one because his songs have been
rated top 5 on music charts. Since his debut in
2016, he has miraculously found his way to the top
and remained there.
Kizz Daniel
While music lovers are yet to savour enough of his
2017 songs including ‘Yeba’, ‘Mama’, ‘Sofa’, ‘Kilamiti’,
Kizz Daniel, aka ‘General Vado’ began thrilling in 2018
with two beautifully- crafted singles, ‘4Dayz’ and ‘No
record label, G-Worldwide, the ‘Woju’ crooner has been
Luck smiled on street music artiste, Mr. Real, when
he dropped his debut single, ‘Legbegbe’ in 2017.
Since then, he has continued to top charts locally
negatively focused, which means, you’re simply
not getting the health benefit sex usually brings.
Note, lifelong celibacy is a different prospect
than experiencing sex and then stopping it. If you
have had sex before and now you aren’t, then
you’re understandably more prone to
disappointment and depression.
Celibacy has effects on your body but they are
hardly life-threatening and definitely, aren’t going
to get in the way of your next sexual adventure.
Sex is good for our body in ways we can’t
even imagine; from better sleep to a stronger
immune system, to burning calories and boosting
your mood. Getting some of these is good in a lot
of ways. It also means that refraining from having
intercourse can create some interesting changes.
This is not to say that it’s wrong to take a sex
break every now and then. Life gets in the way or
we may be between relationships and it’s not just
part of our daily life equation.
Whether we’re not feeling our best or are
stressed, sometimes, love making just takes a
halt. It’s cool, accept that your body is going to
respond in a major way and the part of the body
that gets worst hit is the vagina.
Brain games keep your mind agile, car-do
workouts builds your heart’s health, weight
training makes your muscles strong and sex
keeps your vagina in tip top shape.
“If you are not constantly having sex, it’s
essential you keep the vagina happy and healthy
with masturbation, self pleasures brings all the
benefits ‘’ says Tristan Weedmark of We-Vibe.
Taking a break from sex is not a bad idea but
know that, you might have to reacquaint your
body with orgasmic sensations when/if you
decide to resume activity.
It’s more unpleasant for women than men
when they stop having sex. Depressing enough is
when it comes to the lack of it, ladies are most
adversely affected though men don’t get off
scot-free.
Irrespective of the story behind your
inactiveness in the bedroom, refraining from
intercourse usually has a knock-on effect. The
following are what will occur when you are not
indulging in regular sex.
Loss of libido: If it has to do with sex drive,
your libido will drop. It’s either you’re using it or
losing it. ‘’For some people who refrain from sex,
they begin to feel more sluggish, with less vitality
and hunger for sex’’ Sari Cooper, LCSW, certified
sex therapist remembers the saying ‘’Out of sight,
out of mind’’
Vaginal walls may get weakened:
Abstaining from copulating does not make you
tighter: vagina gets a little bit smaller and this
mainly affects women entering into menopause.
Sari explains: ‘’without regular frequency of
intercourse, as you get older, the walls of your
vagina thin out and can lead to painful sex when
you finally get back into the sack.’’ To this end, the
North American Menopause Society even
recommends having regular penetrative sex, to
help vaginal health during menopause.
You may experience dryness: This is
another side effect which applies mainly to older
women. As you are aware, the vagina battles to
get lubricated when you resume lovemaking after
a break.
What causes this as well as thinning vaginal
walls is as a result of the hormone called
oestrogen. If you take a younger person who’s 20
or 30 years, she is going to have plenty of
oestrogen around to make sure those tissues
stay healthy, elastic and lubricated when she’s
not having sex explains Dr Lauren Streicher. If
you take someone who’s 60, she has lost that
piece of it.
ASK
DOCTOR VIV.
askdrvivian@gmail.com
@derma_care
Web: www.doctorviv.com
Dr Vivian will answer your
questions on skin care and ageing.
Wrinkle Anatomy
Wrinkles are commonly referred to as signs of
wisdom and experience. This may sound
respectable but most people would rather do
without them. Skin ages all over the body but is
more pronounced in sun exposed areas like the
face, neck, forearms and back of the hands. Sun
damage or Photoaging leads to skin dryness,
roughness, sagginess, wrinkles and skin growths
popularly referred to as liver spots. Other factors
that promote wrinkling include smoking, heredity,
low oestrogen hormone levels and skin type
(people with light coloured skin are more prone to
sun damage). Ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun
injure the epidermis and dermis, weakening their
supporting structures and with age, the epidermis
and the connective tissue weaken.
There are two categories of wrinkles; fine
surface lines and deeply set furrows. They differ in
structure and origin and respond to different types
of therapy. Fine surface wrinkles are as a result of
the breakdown of collagen and elastin fibres due to
aging and sun damage. Deeply set furrows are
caused by the build up of muscles beneath the
skins surface over time as a result of repeated
facial expressions in pretty much the same way
muscle is built through exercise. These deep
furrows can show permanently or come about
when facial expressions are made like “crows feet”
showing up when a person smiles. These
categories of wrinkles respond to different
therapies.
It’s not uncommon to find skin blotchiness,
dullness and discolouration associated with aging,
sun damaged skin. The skin rejuvenation process
should be aimed at tackling all these problems in
addition to dealing with wrinkles. Preventative
and restorative measures should be taken in the
fight against wrinkles. Preventative measures
HUMAN-SKIN-ANATOMY
include avoiding excessive sun exposure and
smoking as these create highly reactive molecules
called free radicals that damage skin cells. Sun
protection is a must in every skin care regimen
with the use of a sunscreen with a minimum sun
protection factor (SPF) of 30. The use of collagen
boosting products and supplements are both
restorative and preventative.
Smokers usually develop lines around their lips
caused by repeated puckering while inhaling. Like
sun exposure, smoking breaks down collagen and
elastin, accelerating the rate at which the skin sags
and wrinkles.
Skin Anatomy
The skin is made up of three layers. The
epidermis is the outer protective layer made up of
rows of cells that are stacked like bricks in a wall.
The basement layer of the epidermis contains the
pigment producing cells known as melanocytes
that determine skin colour. The dermis, the
middle layer, consists of connective tissue,
capillaries, nerves, hair bulbs, oil and sweat
glands, and collagen producing cells called
fibroblasts. Supporting collagen and elastin fibres
weave through the dermis giving the skin firmness
and flexibility. The subcutaneous layer lies
beneath the dermis and is composed of fat and
connective tissue. The muscle lies beneath this
layer.
With the aging process, the epidermis thickens
and becomes drier leading to a dull lifeless
appearance. The breakdown of collagen and
elastin fibres in the dermis causes the skin to sag.
This also leads to an increase in its fragility. In
addition, the collagen producing fibroblasts are
less active. Sun damage may stimulate an
increased production of capillaries which show up
as spider veins.
Treatment Options
There are several medical and cosmetic
techniques available.
To restore lustre and improve the texture of the
skin, the thickened epidermis needs to be thinned
and its moisture restored. This can be achieved by
using exfoliating products containing alpha
hydroxy acids (AHAs) such as glycolic acid and
Vitamin A preparations such as Retin-A and
Retinol. Exfoliation may also be achieved by using
products containing beta hydroxy acids (BHAs),
poly hydroxy acids (PHAs), and lactic acid (LA).
Chemical peels, microdermabrasion and the
newer, Citric acid peels are also effective. A
suitable moisturiser is also required. For deep set
wrinkles and scars, Dermabrasion (deep replaning
with a wire brush or sanding wheel) is an option. It
differs from microdermabrasion by going beyond
the epidermis. This is not recommended for dark
skin because of the risk of permanent scarring and
pigment change.
There are prescription chemical peels such as
the Vipeel and the ZO Medical 3 Step Peel are my
favourites and are safe to use on all skin types.
Tropical treatments aimed at improving the
dermis are available to boost collagen production
and these include copper peptide and Vitamin C
containing preparations. If you use both, apply at
different times of the day or different areas as
Vitamin C may neutralise copper. Vitamin A
containing products in addition to exfoliating the
epidermis boost collagen production in the
dermis.
Breaking Boundaries
Network Launches
Project
By - Linda Orajekwe
The Breaking Boundaries Network, a
non-governmental organization
focused on grooming women
to be their best selves,
last weekend at Four
Points by Sheraton, Victoria Island,
Lagos, launched their Honey Bee
project. The Honeybee Project
is a mentorship and networking
event aimed at building strong,
young women in Nigeria by
connecting them to other great
women who are making great strides
in their chosen careers. The network
also seeks to foster conversations that
are beneficial to the growth of women.
This year, the mentorship project is focused
on providing young girls with necessary coaching
that will help them make better decisions in their
passion and chosen fields. It was for this reason
that a community of women that advocate for
each other, was put together in other to break
the popular, age- long myth that women do not
support other women.
The one day conference had a panel of
distinctive, young women who are making
strides in their various careers; and their
willingness to share their experiences, made the
session more interactive. Drawn mainly from the
media, they include, Tora Olaiya, Laila-Johnson
Salami, Kemi Adeyemi and Tomisin Akinwunmi.
These panelists shared on careers,
relationships and how they have fared in their
various industries as women. According to
Tora Olaiya, “we are in an era where the world
is actually looking at women and saying, ‘you
know what? Let’s bring them on board and see
what they can do’. For that, I encourage you to
work hard, so you can be that woman that will
be considered to come on board, and make the
change women are always known to make.”
To Laila Salami, “the Nigerian woman
is a phenomenal woman.” She urged the
participants to start placing that phenomenal
idea on themselves and identifying themselves
with the greatness that comes with being a
Nigerian woman even though the environment
doesn’t make it as conducive. According to her,
“the average Nigerian woman is not a normal
woman. We go through so much to get to
where we have to be: but still, we rise and still,
we achieve. We have a leverage that we can
actually use now that Nigerian women are doing
great things all over the world. That could be you
or me.”
The session was interactive, with participants
seeking answers to the confusions and
challenges around their passion and careers,
especially, when such passions are in conflict
4th from left: chinyere eze falnked by guest spekers
Lizzy Osunde, Chinny Kennedy Echetebu, Chinyere Eze, Ngozi Eze & Funmilayo Ajayi
with parents’ career expectations.
Responding, Tora Olaiya says: “I had the same
issue with my mom. All I did was prove her wrong
that the path I have chosen, is not just what I like,
but I can also make something out of. So when
your parents don’t want you to pursue a field you
love, sometimes, you have to show them why they
should trust you with the decision you have made.
That comes with you showing results. But if you
are young enough, try to do what they want you to
do, and when you are done with school, you can
pursue what you love. The beauty about education
and your degree is that it is never wasted. There
will always be a need for all those things you
learned one day.”
Participants were later grouped for the
mentorship segments where they had the
opportunity to discuss their various challenges
with their assigned mentors. This moment was
one appreciated not just by the participants and
host, but also by the mentors who believed this
kind of initiative is necessary for such a time as
this. According to one of the mentors, a Nigerian
award-winning designer, Toju Foyeh “I like the fact
that young girls are given the opportunity to meet
with women that they look up to and can have as
mentors. It is really important in today’s world that
young girls have people that can keep them in
check, and one that they can look up to for advice.
I’m also glad to be a part of it because for me,
I love impacting lives as there’s no point being
so blessed and not bless other people with
what you have”
On how these mentors were selected,
the convener, Chinyere Eze said: “The
mentors were selected not just based on
their achievements, but also on their lifestyle
and how they have handled their various
businesses. We intend to track the relationship
between the mentors and mentees through
monthly reports, for the purpose of feedback.
It’ll be our joy to see that the mentees are
growing and have been paired with the right
mentor, and if there’s an issue with their
relationship, the feedback process will help us
fix it”
While appreciating all who made the
event a success, she stated that “What is
most important for me, is being able to build
a community of women because we need
women uplifting each other. I am happy to see
that happen here today.”
The mentors for the conference were
author Pat Obilor, Isioma Utomi, Fashion
designer, Toju Foyeh, CEO of LSF PR Bidemi
Zakariyau, MD Suffy Travels; Marie Therese
Ukpo and Tech investor and ecosystem
architect, Maya Horgan Famodu.
Culture meets fashion
as My Q launches roots
P EO PLE
“ONE PARTY AT A TIME!”
:08034746487 | 08039675880
By Jemi Ekunkunbor
It was a journey through history last Sunday when My Q,
a fashion and lifestyle company, launched its new collection
themed, “Roots” at Rele Art Gallery, Victoria Island, Lagos.
My Q, a company that continuously, looks for ways to
change the African narrative through fashion and lifestyle
products, curated a collection that paid tribute to over 17 historic
Nigerian women. The women are: Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti (
Lioness of Lisabi), Emotan, Queen Amina ( the warrior), Flora
Nwanpa, Moremi Ajasoro, Margaret Ekpo, Queen Idia (The
Queen Mother), Alimotu Pelewura, Dora Akunyuli and Stella
Adadevoh. Others include, Hannah Dideolu Awolowo, Hajiya
Gambo Sawaba, Kudirat Abiola and Efunroye Tinubu (Madam
Tinubu).
According to CEO My Q, Yeside Laguda, “we are honouring
women who have fought for our independence, our freedom and
democracy.”
The new collection carefully crafted from chiffon adire,
includes wearable pieces that reflects the 21st century woman,
as well as bits of the historic women listed above. The collection
boasts of floaty dresses, tunics delicately embellished with
glistering beads and stones. Each piece comes with its unique
detail such as, dramatic sleeves, tie-neck, pleats, flounces, etc.
Speaking on why she started doing her own adire fabric, Mrs
Laguda says: “we wanted to wrest control of resources. We
started about 11 years ago but gradually, manufacturing mills
have shut down. It got to a stage that 90-95 % of our resources
are being imported. Sometimes, people order pieces and we
would try and import, and it will just take forever to come.
So I decided to start designing and making my own fabrics.
I’ve worked with adire in the past and it worked well for me.
We always sell out whenever we did anything with it. I can do
anything with adire. It’s a clean canvass for me to work.”
The artsy event which attracted Minister of Information,
Alhaji Lai Mohammed, also brought together an assemblage of
political stars, fashion influencers as well as loyal My Q clients.
In her remark, Deputy Governor of Ogun State, Mrs Yetunde
Onanuga, while tracing the origin of Adire to her native state,
commended the designer, Yeside Laguda for not only promoting
culture, but for bringing local fabrics such as adire to the
limelight. She pointed out that although adire originated from
Abeokuta, it has become a choice fabric loved all over the world.
She urged My Q to collaborate with other stakeholders in
other to take adire and other local fabrics to international level.
Mrs. Onanuga also called on Nigerians “not to wear anything
other than adire.”
Osinbajo at the Co Working Tech Conference
Nigeria’s Vice President, Professor Yemi
Osinbajo last week, declared open the Nigeria
Co Working Tech Conference in Lekki, themed
“Catalyst for Innovation”. Organized by the Venia
Business Hub Lagos, a company which provides
co working space for young entrepreneurs. After
the outing, Prof Osinbajo posted his submission
of the program on his instagram page as an
inspiration for young entrepreneurs, a move which
was well acknowledged by young people on
instagram.
“I am delighted to be among young Nigerians
who have taken a risk to invest in providing
co-working spaces to spur innovation, ideas
and work that will disrupt our collective lives and
experiences.
Kola Oyeneyin’s foresight and grit, as one of
the pioneers of this growing, important economic
and commercial phenomenon, has demonstrated
the sort of drive that I’m sure many across the
room have, but which is so important in the way
our future as a nation and commercial community
will be defined.
I have had the opportunity to collaborate with
Kola on several other issues, and I am extremely
pleased to say that he is someone who sees
things through. I have also had the opportunity to
collaborate with a few of the entrepreneurs here,
especially those who have set up co-working
spaces, I am very happy to say that they are
individuals who would ensure that this is not
just a flash in the pan, but it continues as the
phenomenon that it is.
So as we sit here today, we might as well
imagine that all that we are, are people creating
a new way of working, possibly just working
together in spaces that are defining a different
way. But the truth of the matter is that, we are
participating in historic change, not just in the
way that we work, but in the way that we will
work in the future. And that future has already
arrived at our doorstep.”
According to the Vice President, the more
ideas we are able to bring about by thinking
collaboratively and working together, the greater
we are not just as individuals, but as a group.
