04 THE LIBRARIAN Vol:05 No:02 2018 Mr. Muhammad Naeem, In-Charge, GCU Libraries Lahore, thanked the participants, resource persons and the Chief Guest for sparing their precious time for the workshop. He remarked that this workshop was lead off for the faculty members in which representatives of all the departments participated as per desire of the worthy Vice Chancellor, Prof. Dr. Hassan Amir Shah Sb. who is a bibliophile and takes keen interest in strengthening the GCU Libraries t h r o u g h e n c o u r a g e m e n t , cooperation, inancial and moral support. He said that many more such innovative workshops will be held for the university's students, researchers and faculty members covering different themes. Research Impact and Assessment Training Session on Scopus: Effective Use as an Expert A hands-on training session on SCOPUS database was arranged at Main Library, University of Punjab in collaboration with the Of ice of R e s e a r c h I n n o v a t i o n & Commercialization (ORIC) on May 03, 2018. Head of ORIC PU chaired t h e s e s s i o n a n d s h a r e d h e r experience about the database. She emphasized the importance of the database for researchers and practitioners. Head of ORIC shed light on the database and said that it is the largest abstract and citation d a t a b a s e o f p e e r - r e v i e w e d literature, scienti ic journals, books and conference proceedings.. The session also demonstrated methods to explore how bibliographical data might be analyzed and retrieved using SCOPUS. Dr. Muhammad Haroon Usmani welcomed all participants and thanked resource person Mr. Qaiser Iqbal, Assistant Manager, Electronic Resource & Serials Librarian LUMS. He also discussed the importance of SCOPUS. He acknowledged the role of PLWO in promoting research culture and support towards the community. Around 60 faculty members, researchers, librarians and student participated in the session.
06 THE LIBRARIAN Vol:05 No:02 2018 The session then continued with Mr. Q a i s e r I q b a l p re s e n t i n g t h e importance of SCOPUS database for researchers, faculty, institutions and library professionals. He spoke about how to make use of SCOPUS in identifying H-Index and other citation-based metrics, high-quality journals in a particular ield using j o u r n a l i m p a c t f a c t o r s a n d increasing research visibility and discoverability with tools like ORCID. He also elucidated the importance of the database to learn a b o u t h o l i s t i c a s s e s s m e n t frameworks and non-citation-based metrics and also to be able to u n d e r s t a n d s t r e n g t h s a n d limitations of quantitative metrics and to learn visualization tools and techniques for representing those metrics. This session lasted for ive hours and participants got bene itted from it. The researchers and faculty Glimpses of the Workshop members admired the efforts and teaching methods of the speaker. Concluding the session Dr. Nosheen Fatima Warrich, Associate Professor, D e p a r t m e n t o f I n f o r m a t i o n M a n a g e m e n t . P U , L a h o r e highlighted the issues and presented her opinions about the database and its importance for a researcher. She also shared her experience of the session.
