Here are reports from Stephen
Anderson, Ron Johnson
and Marcella Murad.
The rest of
the time, I worked
at IBM as a project
manager. My responsibilities
included being
responsible to clients
for important and interesting
projects like installing new
computer systems. That was
good.
What could be better than
clowning and working with
talented teams of people on
interesting projects?
How about moving to the
4th poorest country on earth
for two years? Yes, I lived in a
mud hut, ate food with stones
in it, and got dysentery. I also
met some of the kindest and
happiest people on earth. I became
a changed person, from
the inside out. Read on to learn
more about life in Mali, West
Africa.
The Journey Begins
As a 54-year-old white
male born in the USA, life
was good. I had enough food
to eat, good health, education,
and an interesting job to
pay the bills. I had a pleasant
home and drove a sporty car.
But as I heard about famines
and droughts, wars and disease
in other parts of the world I
knew life was not so good in
all places. I asked myself how
I could help alleviate some
of the problems. Of the many
options available I chose the
Peace Corps. I wanted first
hand experience. IBM provided
a non-paid leave-of-absence
for Peace Corps Service. How
could I resist?
After a lengthy application
process, including a physical
exam that was the most
thorough my doctor had ever
done and along with the blessings
and support of my family
and Alley friends, I boarded a
plane from Albany, NY to Philadelphia,
PA. The volunteers
in my group spent two days in
a whirlwind orientation before
taking off for Africa.
We landed in the middle of
the night, having flown over
the Sahara Desert. I stepped
off an air-conditioned, clean
and modern jet into the 110-
degree heat of the 4th poorest
country on earth. I was already
in shock.
We spent the next 12 weeks
at the Peace Corps compound
just outside of the capital city
of Bamako, Mali learning language,
local customs, health,
and security issues. We had to
re-learn how to live. How to
A Clown Goes to Africa
The Experience of a COAI
Member in the Peace Corps
By Stephen “Mr. E-busy” Andersen
Ah yes, life couldn’t have
been better. Each month I
would dress up in clown as
“Mr. E-busy” and perform
with the ‘Caring Clown’ troop
of Electric City Clown Alley,
#285 in Schenectady, NY.
We visited nursing homes to
entertain the residents and
ourselves. At our monthly alley
meeting, I would learn new
clowning skills, practice my
art and enjoy my fellow joeys.
That was good.
Around The World...from page 3
Stephen with his host family and members of the village.
eat. How to sleep. How to go
to the bathroom (nothing like I
could have imagined). How to
avoid diseases and dangerous
animals. How to conduct work.
After all, we were there to do
work.
Twenty-six of the original
group of 30 volunteers continued
in training. Four volunteers
decided to return to the USA
soon after they landed. It was
too much for them. I was the
second oldest of the group. The
more customary age for Peace
Corps volunteers is early twenties.
During my training, I lived
with a host family in a small
village. I learned how to integrate
into their life. One day,
after eating a ‘different’ tasting
meat, I noticed a fresh monkey
hide tacked to the wall. The
surprises were never ending!
When I arrived at my assigned
village, I setup house
on my own. I began to make
friends and become known
in the community. Only then
could I begin my work in
earnest. The work of a Peace
Corps volunteer is very flexible.
We were assigned a host
country sponsor, but there we
used our own talents and initiative
to make the job what we
could.
My Work
I was assigned to the
“Ministry of Economics and
Finance” to support their microfinance
program. Microfinance
is a program for lending
amounts as small as $5-$10
to help improve the lives of
the world’s poorest. I also
secured funding for the first
commercial solar oven in Mali,
started a foreign aid relationship
between two groups of
people with disabilities in Mali
and NY, and supported the
work of a micro-entrepreneur
in Kibera, the largest slum in
Africa.
During my two years in
Mali, I did face painting on the
arms of children in my host
family (they have no mirrors to
look into if I painted on their
faces). I made balloon animals
for a youth camp, and wore
clown noses on public buses to
make the children laugh. Yet
it was not until my last day in
Mali that I actually met Malian
clowns.
In Mali there is a rich history
of clowning. They are
called ‘Korodugas’ (spelling
estimated) because ‘clown’,
or ‘comedians,’ is translated
with a negative connotation
(remember, they do not speak
English). Historically, the korodugas
were revered along
with the chiefs, and they would
never be killed or taken hostage
in battles. Today, most
continued on page 6
November/December 2008 Page 5

Around The World... from page 5
villages have korodugas. They
observe life in the village, and
then put on skits that make
light of and play with many
aspects of day-to-day life in
the villages.
So on my last day in Mali, I
met the korodugas, gave them
my balloons, make-up, and
costume. Then we played with
skits and balloons. They were
very happy.
Next Steps
Back home again, the Electric
City Clown Alley decided
to create a relationship with
the Malian korodugas. The
Alley has assembled its first
box of clown supplies that we
will be sending overseas very
soon. We will foster exchanges
of culture and clowning techniques.
It should be another
exciting journey.
All in all, this was an incredible
life changing experience.
I am glad to share it with
my fellow joeys, wherever they
may be!
Entertaining and
Teaching in China
By Ron “Toto” Johnson
www.totojohnson.com
Nimen Hao! (Hello everyone!)
For many years I have written
articles about my travels
and adventures clowning
around the world, but this is
my very first article as an official
“International Ambassador”
for COAI.
I recently returned home
after an incredible 2-1/2 week
trip to Hangzhou, Zhejiang,
China for the “2008 Hangzhou
AEMI World Clown Festival.”
This was my second trip to
Hangzhou as I was also part
of the clown festival that took
place in the Hangzhou suburb
of Tiandu City last October.
My duties for the festival
this year were tri-fold. I arrived
a week before the festival as
part of the 3 person organizing/management
team. It was
our job, led by the absolutely
Ron “Toto” Johnson (R) entertaining with his good friend Eric
“EZ” Zander (L). Pictured with them is a audience volunteer.
amazing Brenn Swanson, to
meet with the government
officials and sponsoring committee
to finalize the arrangements,
approve the advertising,
layout the plans and locations
for the 4 stages, do a bit of
public relations, etc. That was
an eye-opening experience!
I never realized the depth of
doing business in China! Differences
in business practices,
both on the cultural and professional
levels, made for some
interesting experiences! Thank
goodness we each had our own
personal translator. We could
not have done it without them!
My next duty was to teach
a class on clowning to 25 college
students. These volunteers
would stroll around the festival
grounds adding color and excitement
to the event. My old
pal Chris Allison and I led the
students through improv exercises,
clown gags, make-up
techniques, and more. They all
worked very hard and added
a lot to the success of the festival.
It was great working with
Chris again. He and I grew up
in the same hometown (Naugatuck,
CT), clowned together
in high school, went on to the
Ringling Brothers and Barnum
and Bailey Circus’ Clown College
right out of high school
(Chris in 1984 and me in
1985), and we both toured with
“The Greatest Show on Earth.”
Every once in a while we get
to work together again on a
project and it is always a thrill
for me.
My final duty during the
“2008 Hangzhou AEMI World
Clown Festival” was my favorite
of all. I got to perform
onstage in a 30-minute show
with one of my favorite clown
partners of all time…Eric “EZ”
Zander. “EZ” is the epitome
of a good clown and is a dear
friend. Our show, full of juggling,
slapstick gags, and
audience participation, was
extremely well received by the
audiences. You would never
have known that “EZ” and I do
not get to perform together on
a regular basis! As a matter of
fact, the last time I performed
on stage with him was back in
May 2007 at a clown festival
in Liuzhou, Guangxi, China!
With just a few phone calls
while we were both still at
home, a bit of a run through
and talk through when we got
to China, and a shared vision,
we put together a fantastic
show.
Have you ever performed
with someone who seemed to
know what you were going
to do before you did it? That
is how it is when I work with
“EZ.” I know I can trust him
110% on stage. What a rare
gift! I have only ever worked
with a handful of people like
that in my 23 years of full time
clowning.
Our show was just 1 of the
4 presented on the “Dragonfly
Stage” three times each day
during the festival. The other
clowns on my stage were the
Allison family (Chris, Gina,
and 9 year old son Hunter),
Kevin Brown, Mike Smith, and
Kevin Carr. I could not have
asked for better folks to share a
stage with!
The remaining three stages;
“Main Entrance,” “Big Lawn,”
and “Lotus Pond” also had
four shows presented three
times daily in the gorgeous
Hangzhou Botanical Garden.
The variety of clowning styles
presented - circus, stage, musical,
etc. gave a nice flavor to
the festival. Each and every
one of the performers on stage,
as well as those hired to entertain
on the grounds, could have
headlined any show!
All too soon the festival
came to a close and we all
had to return to our homes,
our lives, our other gigs and
other jobs. It is nice to be home
again, but I always feel I leave
a piece of my heart in China
every time I step back on the
airplane for the 15 hour flight
home. What a powerful experience!
I cannot wait to do it all
again!
Clowning In Australia
By Marcela Murad
In September I had the privilege
of attending the Australian
Face Painters and Entertainers
Convention and teaching a preday
clowning class to a group
of 14 beautiful ladies with a
collective clowning experience
of about 15 years. One girl,
Kristi, was a brand new clown
who was experiencing clowning
for the first time. She is
one of those jewels born with
the heart and the personality
to succeed. Her enthusiasm
reminded me of the time that
seems so long ago when I first
discovered the art of clowning.
With one of those faces that
shines when she smiles (which
is constantly) and a bubbly
personality, that reminds me of
expensive champagne, running
into Kristi confirmed for me
Left is Kristi and on the right is an unidentified Australian clown.
They put an emphasis on less make-up and
more “everyday” attire.
that clowning will continue to
be alive and well all over the
world.
Thea, who organized the
convention has been a clown
for over a decade. She filled
me in on the way things are
done in Australia, which are
not much different that what
we do here in the States. Their
work consists of 90% birthday
parties, with magic, storytelling,
balloons and face painting
being the most popular skills.
One type of entertainer that is
very popular are the fairies.
They were everywhere! Fairy
Sarah taught the magic class
and I was mesmerized watching
her and imagining how a
small audience will be captivated
by her persona. I was
very impressed.
Kelly Virgona has attended
the Face and Body Art International
Convention for the
past four years, and though she
is known in the face painting
community as a fun person
with more energy than two energizer
bunnies, she surprised
me with her clowning skills.
Her tiny little car sporting the
cutest clown wrap puts a smile
on every face.
The Australian make-up is
very minimal and very simple
but not in a light Auguste
European style. For example,
Thea wears two circles on
her cheeks and a couple lines
around her eyes. She paints her
lips but does not wear a nose. I
didn't see many clowns in costume,
but this style I was told
was the norm.
On Saturday Thea invited
me to face paint at a restaurant
she works on a regular basis
while she performed her magic
show. The audience of about
40 kids loved her and so did
I. She managed to keep their
attention though the restaurant
was noisy and the play area
where the children gathered
was small and packed to capacity.
I jumped in and we
did some improv and played
together. As we left and walked
through the restaurant, ALL
of the adults waved and said
goodbye. They appreciated the
clown being there.
In all, Australia was so
much fun. I invited all of them
to join COAI by directing
them to the Web site because I
didn't have any paper work to
give them. If it wasn't so far to
travel, I would definitely travel
there more often to continue
sharing the world of clowning
with them. ◆
President’s Comments
Holiday Greetings:
The past few months
have been a great learning
experience for me. Yes,
there is a difference in being
a member of the COAI
Board and taking the helm
of such a vast and busy
organization. I have enjoyed
each and every moment of
the experience to date. Both
the ups and the downs, and
believe me, there are both.
Keep the communication
lines open between you
and the Board Members. It
is most important that we
know what you are thinking
and wanting. Because of
your input, we now have
committees looking into
ways to improve conventions
and competitions. The
Web site is being updated;
hopefully it will become
more user friendly.
The board welcomes two
new members; Northwest
Region Vice President Dawn
Pearson and Rick Danielson,
who will return to his old
position as International
Region Vice President. Be
sure to give both a shout
and a great big welcome.
You will find their email
addresses listed with the
COAI Officers in front of
this publication.
I want to thank Past-
Presidents Cheri Venturi and
Paul Kleinberger for their
guidance. A very special
thanks goes out to our
Executive Vice President
Pam Bacher. Without Pam’s
support, knowledge and hard
work, the board would not
have been able to get off to
such a fast start.
It’s time to start collecting
your pennies to help pay
your way to the COAI
International Convention
in April. Make plans, ask
for the time off work if
necessary, work on your
competition skills or don’t
worry about competition
and just enjoy being a part
of such a great organization.
Catch up with old friends
and make new ones. I have
visited the hotel and it is
very nice with both an indoor
pool and outdoor pool! I
know Bon Bon will be in her
glee!
Are you looking for the
perfect gift for a family
member or your best
friend? How about a COAI
membership? I know many
of our family and friends are
not clowns. You do not have
to be a clown to be a member
we are an Arts Organization.
With a
membership, your
family and friends
can come to see what you
see in the Art of Clowning.
They will get a better grasp
on what you are doing and
want to do. One of the best
ways to win your family and
friends over to the Art of
Clowning is to include them,
and what better way than
with a membership in COAI
and their very own copy of
The New Calliope.
I wish each of you Happy
Holidays. May you and
yours be blessed at this very
special time of the year. Be
sure to set clowning and life
goals for the up coming year.
Goals are our road map to
success, be it in life, work
or fun. Let’s all make 2009
the best year of our lives, for
both our families and us. ◆
Fall Board Meeting Gets Busy
by Pat Newton
This year’s board meeting
was held in August as
opposed to the traditional
October. Members of the
board agreed with the new
leaders in place they wanted
to get started as early as
possible.
New president Tom King
made it very clear he had
some specific goals he wanted
to achieve. These included
the areas of competition,
conventions, junior joeys and
the ambassador programs.
With this in mind, throughout
the meeting he organized
“break out” sessions for the
board members to discuss,
give ideas and then report to
the group. These were very
effective in getting some
great ideas and brainstorming
started on these important
topics.
The new regional VPs dove
right in showing an eagerness
to achieve the best for our
organization.
Some of the areas
discussed were:
Action Items. All members
of the board were asked to
report back within 90 days
of the meeting with a status
update.
Parliamentarian. It
was agreed to invite our
parliamentarian to all future
meetings. His advice is
valuable for the smoothrunning
and decision-making
aspects of the board meeting.
Electronic emailing and
voting by board online
when not in session. The
parliamentarian is not in favor
of this practice, however
he is willing to yield to the
new technically oriented
world. There must be an
amendment to the bylaws.
It was presented to the
board for information and is
now being sent to the rules
committee for a bylaw to be
developed and brought to the
general membership. In the
meantime, the board is testing
this idea during the interim.
Ambassador Program.
Presented by Paul and
Cheri to step the program
up. It’s important to get the
message out. The regional
vice presidents are unable
to get to every alley and the
ambassadors are a great way
to do so. There was a break
out session to discuss the
program with main ideas
concentrating on a need to
create a team atmosphere
between ambassadors.
Junior Joeys. Liability
insurance is being checked
to make sure the juniors are
included in the umbrella
policy. There was also a
break out discussion to
talk about increasing the
number of junior joeys in our
membership. Discussion was
to develop a curriculum that
could be distributed and used
as well as the possibility of
partnering with other groups.
A committee was formed
to continue developing the
program.
Competition. This
was one of the breakout
areas to discuss revisiting
the competition criteria.
Competition committee is
working on existing formats
and incorporating others.
In the area of balloon
competition, it was
passed to read: Balloon
International Clown
Week. It is a desire to open
discussion with other clown
organizations to coordinate
and combine efforts during
this important week of
promoting our craft.
Convention Update.
The 2008 Convention was
financially successful . The
2009 host alley is working
very hard with the hotel
to organize a great week.
The board did review the
convention site and give
input. In 2010 the host alley
will be Houston, TX. More to
follow.
Web site. There was
a break out session to
discuss a wish list for our
current Web site and how it
should function. Ideas were
presented to Candy Will,
who will head the committee,
to explore some of these
options.
Logo Development.
The proposed new logo
has gone through some
redevelopment to be ready
for legal. Previously, the logo
was rejected by legal because
of similarities to some other
logos already in use. Action
was made to Pat Newton
to have a mock-up done
showing how the logo can be
used in other applications.
Membership Retention.
There is an average loss
of 250 members per
year. President Tom King
challenged board to come up
with ways to cultivate that
retention.
Lifetime Achievement
Award was approved to be
implemented. Asked the
regional VPs to identify
people in their region who
would be eligible.
Clown of the Year.
Discussion about getting
more people involved.
Some of the ideas presented
included listing all nominees
New Calliope. In honor of
the 25th anniversary it was
decided to celebrate in all six
issues of The New Calliope
during the 25th year starting
with the July/Aug 2009
issue. Each issue will present
history and photos from a five
year period. There was also a
request to obtain prices for a
heavier cover on the existing
New Calliope as well as
pricing for bagging it.
Items to be noted:
Office expenses for
regional VPs was increased
to $150 to help cover the
increasing costs of postage
posible.
El nuevo presidente, Tom
King, dejó claro que tiene
algunas metas específicas que
quiere lograr. Estas incluyen
las áreas de competencias,
convenciones, junior joeys y
programas de embajadores.
Con esto en mente, durante la
reunión, él organizó sesiones
de escapada para que los
miembros de la directiva
discutieran, dieran ideas y
luego las reportaran al grupo.
Esto fue muy efectivo para
obtener muchas buenas ideas,
y la lluvia de ideas comenzó en
esos tópicos importantes.
Los nuevos VP’s regionales
aterrizaron mostrando avidez
en lograr lo mejor para nuestra
organización.
Algunas de las áreas
discutidas fueron:
Asuntos de acción. Todos
los miembros de la directiva
fueron asignados a reportarse
nuevamente dentro de noventa
días luego de la reunión, con
una actualización de su estatus.
Parlamentario. Se agredió
invitar a nuestro parlamentario
a todas las reuniones futuras.
Su consejo es valioso para los
aspectos de funcionamiento
sin problemas y toma de
decisiones en las reuniones de
la directiva.
Correo electrónico y
votaciones en línea por la
directiva cuando no están en
sesión. El parlamentario no
está a favor de esta práctica,
sin embargo, está dispuesto
a ceder ante el nuevo mundo
tecnológicamente orientado.
Debe haber una enmienda a los
reglamentos. Esto se presentó
a la directiva para información
y ahora se está enviando al
comité de reglas para que se
desarrolle una reglamentación
y se lleve a la membresía
general. Mientras tanto, la
directiva está probando esta
idea.
Programa de embajadores.
Presentado por Paul y Cheri
para llevar al programa un
paso adelante. Es importante
llevar el mensaje afuera. Los
vicepresidentes regionales son
incapaces de llegar a cada alley
y los embajadores son un buen
camino para hacerlo. Hubo
una sesión de escapada para
discutir el programa con ideas
principales concentrándose
en la necesidad de crear una
atmósfera de equipo entre los
embajadores.
Junior Joeys. El seguro de
responsabilidad está siendo
revisado para asegurarse que
los juniors están incluidos en
la sombrilla de las políticas.
También hubo una discusión de
escapada para hablar acerca de
aumentar el número de junior
joeys en nuestra membresía.
La discusión se hizo para
desarrollar un currículo que
pudiera ser distribuido y usado,
así como la posibilidad de
asociarse con otros grupos.
Se formó un comité para
continuar desarrollando el
programa.
Competencias. Esta fue
una de las áreas de escapada
para discutir el volver a visitar
los criterios de competencia.
El comité de competencias
está trabajando en formatos
existentes e incorporar otros.
En el área de competencias
en globos, se pasó a leer.
Arreglo en globos – Una
escultura y/o arreglo usando
una combinación de globos
de igual o diferente tamaño,
utilizando un objeto que no
fuera globo en el arreglo.
Todos los arreglos deben ser
Semana Internacional
del Payaso. Es un deseo
abrir discusión con otras
organizaciones de payasos para
coordinar y combinar esfuerzos
durante esta importante
semana, promoviendo nuestro
arte.
Actualización de la
convención. La convención
del 2008 fue financieramente
exitosa. El alley anfitrión
del 2009 está trabajando
muy fuerte con el hotel para
organizar una gran semana.
La directiva revisó el lugar
de la convención y ofreció su
aportación. En el 2010 el alley
anfitrión será en Houston,
Texas.
Web site. Hubo una sesión
de escapada para discutir una
lista de deseos para nuestro
actual web site y cómo debería
funcionar. Se presentaron ideas
a Candy Will, quien dirigirá el
comité para explorar varias de
esas opciones.
Desarrollo del logo. El
nuevo logo propuesto ha
pasado por un re-desarrollo
para que esté listo para ser
legal. Previamente, el logo
fue rechazado en la legalidad
por tener similitudes con
otros logos en uso. La acción
se dirigió a Pat Newton,
quien preparó una maqueta
mostrando cómo el logo
se puede usar en otras
aplicaciones.
Retención de la
membresía. Hay una pérdida
promedio de 250 miembros por
año. El presidente Tom King
retó a la directiva a traer ideas
para cultivar la retención.
Reconocimiento de Logros
de por Vida se aprobó para ser
implementado. Se le solicitó a
los vicepresidentes regionales
identificar personas en su
región quienes pudieran ser
elegibles.
Payaso del año. Hubo
discusión sobre tener mayor
gente involucrada. Algunas
de las ideas presentadas
incluyeron listar todos los
nominados en The New
Calliope.
The New Calliope. En
honor del 25 aniversario,
se decidió celebrar en los
seis ejemplares de The New
Calliope del año del 25
aniversario, comenzando con el
ejemplar de Julio/Agosto 2009.
Cada ejemplar presentará
historia y fotografías de
un período de cinco años.
También hubo una solicitud
para obtener precios para que
la portada de la revista sea
más gruesa, así como ver
precios para enviarla en un
empaque plástico.
Asuntos a notar:
Los pagos por gastos de
oficina para los vicepresidentes
regionales fue aumentado a
$150 para ayudar a cubrir los
crecientes gastos de franqueo y
otros gastos de oficina.
Mercancía – Se aprobó
un honorario por tramitación
de $2.00 para los cargos
por tarjeta de crédito para la
compra de mercancía menor de
$20.00.
Oportunidades de
convención: “Run for
the Noses Opportunity”
(“Oportunidad Corre por las
Narices”), incentivo en beca
para la convención: $50 por
región y un gran premio de
$300.
The New Calliope

Red's Parade Of One Thousand Clowns
By Keith “Toby” Stokes
The Red Skelton Festival
added a new and exciting
addition this year. I wish to
tell you about it.
Last January I had a
call from the Vincennes
University, the oldest
university (1903) in Indiana
and the promoters of the
Festival. They had learned
about Toby the Clown
Foundation, Inc. located in
Lake Placid, FL teaching
others the art of clowning.
The question was, “would
the teaching facility of the
foundation be willing to
travel to Vincennes to teach
children ages 8-15?” For all
you who have followed the
activities of the Foundation,
teaching others is exactly
what we do. Yes, we hold
five schools a year and
one of those schools is for
Junior Joeys. So the answer
to their question was a big
“Yes.” The President of the
clown foundation “Big Al”
Pelski was contacted, as
was “Wendy” Hagg. Both
are teachers of classes at the
Clown Foundation with a lot
of experience.
As plans were being
formulated with the
committee in Vincennes
(Marlyn McCormick, Anne
Rinderle, Marge Huber,
and Linda Rupel), another
idea developed. The festival
always has a big parade
of clowns on Saturday. So
we decided to teach the
kids how to make a Kazoo
instrument and become part
of the parade.
About this time, the
March/April issue of
The New Calliope with
Pricilla Mooseburger’s
picture on the front cover
leading a Kazoo Band
and her detailed article
“how to” appeared. I had
previously attended her
Clown Camp and learned
the “how to” but this was a
wonderful refresher. Pricilla
Mooseburger is such a
great dedicated clown and
wonderful lady.
Then something
happened that was
wonderful for the kids. Our
Junior Joeys were chosen to
lead the parade!
And they lived up to
the challenge. They led
the parade. They walked
1.1 miles without anyone
quitting! They entertained
by stopping and playing
their kazoos to the crowd.
They were the “hit” of the
parade.
The city counsel and the
mayor Al Baldwin were
proud of them too. They had
set up chairs in front of their
viewing stand for the kids to
sit in and enjoy the rest of
the parade. They had cold
water for them to cool off.
But this was not the
kids’ first appearance in
public. We taught all 43 of
them skits that were part
of the school’s schedule.
We put on a show in the
auditorium of the University
on Friday night with over
400 people attending. The
kids performed some of
Red’s one liners, his skits
of Gertrude and Hecliff,
the flying sea gulls, and his
characters including “Clem
Kadiddle Hopper.”
The Red Skelton Festival
is to help raise funds for
the completion of the Red
Skelton Museum. Vincennes
is the birthplace and
hometown of Red Skelton.
His widow Lothian Skelton
has committed to giving
over three million dollars
of Red’s memorabilia to
the museum. She said “Red
would want his home town
to have his items rather than
have them in Hollywood.”
Well this is a very
desired goal for them to
achieve, and I am pleased
to report this year they
had 602 clowns register
for the parade and festival.
This was well ahead of
last year’s attendance of
400 clowns. It’s no wonder
this is growing at this
rate. Consider this, free
lodging is provided for
the first 200 clowns at the
University. There is free
ice cold water and tents for
the clowns. There is a cost
of only $25 for all meals
at the cafeteria. Prior to
the parade a professional
clown instructor gives an
afternoon of teaching. This
year’s instructor was Terry
Ricketts from Arizona.
There's a great entertaining
evening show, which is held
in the new Red Skelton
Performing Arts Center
at reasonable cost. This
year's celebrated entertainer
was Crystal Gayle. As a
performer Gayle is perhaps
most associated with her
floor length hair and her
1977 hit single “Don’t It
Make My Brown Eyes
Blue.” She performed a mix
of her popular single and
other classics at the benefit
show. Peggy Sue, Gayle’s
sister, also performed.
After the show on
Saturday night we were
honored to attend, with the
group, the Gala Event. It
was held in the uncompleted
museum. There we could
see the ideas and plans
of the community for
its completion. We were
encouraged to sign our
names on the wall of the
museum which, we were
told, will always greet
future visitors. You can bet
we’ll be watching for our
signatures in the future!
Maybe you can help us
watch for them when you
visit the completed museum
and visit Red’s boyhood
home and view his large
mural.
This article would not
be complete unless I told
you about the tremendous
hospitality we received.
First the Vincennes
University, the news
media. For some pictures
Convention Report
by Pat Roeser
Director of Conventions
Are you ready for a
“Race for the Noses” at the
2009 COAI Convention
in Clarksville, IN? It is
just across the river from
Louisville, KY, home of the
Kentucky Derby. Ladies, you
may want to wear your finest
hat for this one! I’d like to
see the men in silks.
Just can’t save enough
to get to 2009? How about
filling a jar with all your
change at the end of the
day? That can really add
up fast!!! Maybe you can’t
save enough for 2009. How
about April 20-25, 2010 in
Houston, TX? That’s right!
Cheerful Clown Alley #166
has won the bid. So save
your change or put $1 away
everyday starting NOW. It’s
amazing how painless this
is and how much you can
actually save!!!
Think and act on this.
Would you like to have
great instructors, interesting
workshops, merchandise
vendors, and competitive
competitions close by
so you could attend all
events? Has the expense of
transportation been holding
you back from attending a
Clowns of America Int'l,
Inc. convention? Have you
and your alley considered
hosting a COAI convention?
How about for 2011? This
may be the perfect time to
put a committee together and
research the possibilities.
Maybe there is another club
in the area that would like
to share the experience with
your alley. For additonal help
contact the Convention and
Visitors Bureau in your area.
• Can help with the selection
of hotels to suit your
needs.
• Can assist
with letters,
presentations,
and tours.
•Can provide visitors guides,
maps and brochures.
What are some of the
things to consider?
• Location near an airport
and other forms of
transportation.
• Off property attractions,
restaurants, and
shopping.
• A hotel with a secured
area for exhibitors with
a Wednesday through
Saturday, 24 hour hold.
• A hotel that can
accommodate several
classrooms running
simultaneously and an
area for competitions.
Skit competitions need
higher ceilings than 10
feet.
One problem that may
occur is that we are not
a very large attendance
group but we require a lot
of space. Also, we are too
large for some smaller hotel
properties.
Host alleys are illegible
for a $1,000 grant from
COAI to help with the
startup fund. We are very
willing to help in any way to
help make your convention a
success.
Contact me with any
questions. There is a simple
form to send to each COAI
Board member 30 days
before the 2009 COAI
Convention being held in
Clarksville, IN. The 2011
convention site will be
selected there on Friday,
April 24th and announced
at the Saturday evening
banquet. ◆
Present the “cube” to your audience.
More Simple and Fun Magic
by Candy Butterscotch Will
Junior Joey Chair
Hello Juniors! I sure hope you
enjoyed the “Magic Coloring Book” in
the last issue. I also hope you've added it
to your bag of tricks!
I thought I would share another
inexpensive walk around magic trick.
When you say “Walk Around” it
literally means walking around and
entertaining as you walk. All clowns
should have big pockets so they can
carry lots of clown props, including
“Pocket Magic.”
The trick involves a little square
sponge about two inches by two inches
that magically transforms into an
adorable dinosaur. It comes in several
different colors. I got my very first one
at one of the COAI Conventions. My
dear clown friend Marie “Mischief”
Beck helped me with my patter. As you
know, patter is the important dialogue
you create to go with the trick.
Here's how I do the trick! I pull out
the sponge and show it to the audience
keeping the cut side down. (On one
side of the square you will see some
cutting in the sponge. This is the side
that should never been shown to the
audience.) I explain to them I was
walking by the Mission (I live in San
Juan Capistrano, so I mean the Mission
San Juan Capistrano where they are
doing excavation of fossils inside). Then
I say I happened to find an abandoned
“dinosaur egg.” So I thought I would
take it home and take care of it. It
looked like it needed a mother… Then I
say, “UH OH, it feels like it’s trying to
hatch!” I take the egg and hold it inside
both my palms so it can’t be seen. With
my thumbs I start to push up into the
cut area of the square while hiding it in
my two hands held together. I say things
like “Oh, oh! It is hatching! I can feel
it opening up!” After I can feel that the
inside of the “egg” is completely turned
inside out, I show it to the crowd. I coo
over the newly born “dinosaur” showing
the audience the cute, little baby.
Sometimes the children want to hold
it but I just say “You can pet it but you
can’t hold it because it was just born and
is very delicate and probably needs to be
in an incubator.” I tell them I need to put
it in a safe place and quickly put it in
one of my big pockets.
The sillier you are and the cuter you
can make the “baby dinosaur,” the better
your clown act will be. I think this is a
perfect “Clown Magic Trick” and it is
also something you juniors can afford.
These eggs usually run no more than
five to ten dollars. This is just one more
magic trick to put in your clown bag of
magic tricks.
Like all magic tricks, you can
take this one and change the patter
to whatever works for your style of
clowning or show.
Do you have a favorite magic trick or
prop you would like to write about and
share? Please send them to my email
address or to my snail mail address and
I will print them here in the Junior Joey
Column.
Happy Clowning! ◆
The side you keep hidden is the one
showing the cuts in the sponge.
This is the tricky part and one you will
have to practice. I'm showing you how you
push through to create the little dinosaur.
However, you need to do this step while
your hands are cupped around the sponge.
This will give the illusion the dinosaur
magically appeared!
And here's the baby dinosaur ready
for a new home!
Thanks To Those Spreading Education!
By Glenn “Clyde D Scope”
Kohlberger
COAI, South East Regional
Vice-President
During the first week
of September, some of the
COAI Board members were
“Walking On Sunshine”
at the Southeast Clown
Association’s (SECA)
Annual Convention in the
Hyatt Regency Hotel in
Jacksonville, FL. Board
members who were there
included: Director of
Education, Cheri Venturi;
Treasurer, Claudia Keener;
Sergeant-at-Arms, Michael
Cox; and South East
Regional Vice-President,
Glenn Kohlberger.
Each year SECA does
a wonderful job with their
convention, and this year
was no exception. COAI
has had a long standing
relationship with SECA.
This year the Board
presented George “Giorgio”
Hallenbeck, President
of the South East Clown
Association, and Joe “Hi
De Ho” Cloutier, President
of the host alley, the Gator
Clowns of Jacksonville,
with certificates of
Vincent Pagliano
(in costume of course!) was
delighted to be recognized
for his work at Clownfest.
Right is his certificate.
recognition for promoting
the art and education of
clowning in the southeast
region of the United States.
Then jumping into
whatever mode of
transportation they had,
Cheri Venturi, Claudia
Keener and Glenn
Kohlberger headed north
to Seaside Heights, NJ
for Clownfest 2008 which
ran Sept 10-14. Clownfest
is a fantastic example of
just how to put together a
Clown Extravaganza year
after year (for 27 years to be
exact). Vincent A. Pagliano
is the reason that Clownfest
is such a premiere event.
Clownfest not only gives
everyone who participates
a great time, it has some
of the best vendors,
instructors, and mentors
all in one place. It gives
everyone the opportunity to
not only be educated, and
of cheering spectators on
the performing weekend
warrior clown and the true
professional, and finds
a way to get all of these
different levels of clowns
to not only work together,
but to learn from each
other. To this end the COAI
board represented by Cheri
Girl Friend Remembered
The Mary Carter Beacon
House for Elderly and
Handicapped Adults, located
at 142 East Wythe Street,
Petersburg, VA honored the
memory of Regina “Girl
Friend” Onley by declaring
Oct 20 as Regina's Clowns
Day.
According to Rolette L.
Knight-Thweatt, Executive
Director, this date was
selected because it was
Regina's birthday. The Mary
Carter Beacon House was
one of “Girl Friend's favorite
The Hamid Circus, Inc.
and Troy, NY’s Oriental
Shriners joined forces on
Sept 27 at Hudson Valley
Community College.
They presented the 37th
Annual Shrine Circus. It
was two rings of circus fun
that delighted thousands
of New York Capital
Region residents. The
circus featured a variety of
traditional clowning around,
plus jugglers, acrobats,
unicyclists, magicians, plate
spinners, French Poodles,
and aerialists performing
from the rooftops added just
for the fun of it all. Many of
the traditional trappings of a
circus were also present for
everyone’s amusement and
enjoyment.
Oriental's NORCO Clowns
invited the clowns of the
Fuddi-Duddy Institute, the
Electric City Clown Alley
and the Capital Region
Clown Arts Festival to get in
on the show. Together they
were declared to be “The
Greatest Local Clowns On
Earth” by Peter Stugis, the
Ringmaster. COAI's most
recent Past President and
Director At Large, Paul
on a 'nature walk' and had bug nets & passed out plastic bugs to
people along the parade route. We also told lots of 'bug' jokes!”
The Northland Clown Guild Alley #217 of North Kansas City,
MO participated in the 40th Annual Parkville Days Riverfest
Parade on Aug 23. Their float took third place and won $50!
Those participating in the parade were: Amber “Vera” Siasoco,
Alleys and Members On The Move!
reports, “… in true circus
fashion everything is
exaggerated just a little bit.
However, after many years
of clowning around and
enjoying most every minute
of it, I can now say that I
have performed in a circus!
I loved it! And, it was great
fun to be recognized for
doing a good job and getting
some laughs. In addition, I
had a chance to meet several
of the show's performers,
hear stories of the trials and
tribulations of being on the
road in the 21st century
and how a three week stand
coming up in November
in Atlantic City for some
apparently offers a welcome
respite for the road weary.”
Send Johnny Well Wishes
“I, Johnny 'Clifford the
Clown' Villalobos, COAI
member 25490 can no longer
continue to clown around.
I have been diagnosed with
Myasthenia Gravis which is a
neuromuscular disease. This
condition causes me to run
out of energy when I work as
a clown or just walk around
the house. I certainly will
miss the love for clowning.
I will miss all the help that
COAI and the family of
Joey’s I have received great
information from. May you
continue to 'Do the greatest
joy for the greatest numbers'
for your love will always be
cherished.”
Toby the Clown Foundation, together with the Lake Placid Noon
Rotary, and three of their past Presidents, Luis Ojeda, Matt
Elliott and Paul Elliott, long time supporters and donators to the
foundation, tackled the major job of moving 20 clown figures that
had become overgrown by a hedge and blocked by a road barrier.
Foundation President Albin “Big Al” Pelski and Bob and Harriet
Porter, Founders of the Lake Placid Mural Society, also helped.
Matt Elliott’s tractor made the job easy. Albin “Big Al” Pelski
is proud to report that the Museum and Library Addition at the
Clown House is about to break ground. It should be completed by
the end of the year. Everyone, especially Keith “Toby” Stokes, are
very excited. We are asking for the donation of monetary help or
historic clown items at this time. Call “Big Al” at 863-243-9473.
The Kanawha Klowns,
the hometown alley of our
very own COAI President,
were very active for clown
week 2008! President
Jessica Vance obtained
Proclamations for Clown
Week by Danny Jones,
mayor of Charleston
West Virginia, and by Joe
Manchin, Governor of the
State of West Virginia. Members also participated in events
daily; including Adult Day care visits, wear your shoes/nose
to work day, and a televised alley meeting in full costume!
During the meeting, held on Aug 4, the proclamations were
read to the members, and Tom King was presented with the
WSAZ News Channel 3 “Hometown Hero” award! The
hometown hero award is presented to those in the tri-states
of West Virginia, Ohio and Kentucky that exemplify the true
meaning of community service. The segment aired on the
news channel for several weeks.
Once a year Camp Braveheart in Lake Wales, FL invites bereaved
children, ages 6 to 16, who have lost a loved one, for a weekend
retreat. In March three chartered buses transported 119 children
and 123 adults to the campsite. The Highland County Hospice
Caring Clowns met the bus and got busy entertaining the children
while they were being registered. The following day was declared
“Clown Day.” It was a day to remember with five caring clowns
from Polk County and five caring clowns from Highland County.”
Bebe the Clown is pictured here with a group of preschoolers
from the Delta Center in St. Louis IL. They sang silly songs and
BeBe painted their faces and made them all fun clown hats in
“This was the Minneapolis Aqua Jester’s 63rd year of participating in the annual Minneapolis Aquatennial Parade. A number of
the members are part of Alley #19 or individual members of COAI. We had a number of motorized vehicles along with the large
float I announced from (called under the little top!) and two other large clown floats we towed with tractors. It makes for a
fantastic parade. My dad, Ken “Jo Jo Jolly, Sr.” is 83 and still walked the parade (Above right). Ken has been a clown with the
Aqua Jesters since 1950 and clowned with Emmett Kelly Sr. at the last big top held in Minneapolis. He also became friends with
Emmet Kelly Jr. and clowned with him a number of times. My daughter, Nicole “Smile” is 20 (above center) and rode the back
of the float playing a calliope. I am a full time magician, clown and balloonist. I'm proud to say Nicole has these skills as well.”
The New Calliope

Photos and article by Ann “Tuttles” Sanders
Skill Level: Beginner
Props: Table or other flat
surface and
six flat
sided
disks
(coins,
buttons,
checkers,
construction
paper circles,
etc.)
2
1
Arrange the six disks, four
in one line and three in the
other, on a flat surface to
form a cross pattern. Then
challenge your audience to
rearrange the six disks so
that they will total four in
each row.
Start by displaying six flat sided disks.
3
Simply pick up the disk at the
bottom of the cross and place
it on top of the disk in the
middle of the cross.
The Solution:
Once your audience
learns the how the
trick is done, you
can bet that they will
show the trick to
their friends.
Six To Four
Preformance: As you arrange
the six disks on a table or other
flat surface, you can tell your
audience a story similar to, “I was
helping my Mom bake cookies.
As the cookies were cooling, Mom
arranged them like a cross. She
told me that, if I could rearrange
the six cookies so that there
were four in each line, I could
have all six. You should have
seen the look on my Mom’s
face when I did it!
Can you?”
You never said
that they couldn’t
place one disk on
top of another but
you’d be surprised
how many of your
audience assumes
otherwise!
Competition
It is off to Nuevo Laredo
Mexico I go! I am going
to the 4th Concentration of
International Clowns for
their competitions Dec 9-
10! I am sooooooooooooo
excited.
I want to look at their
make-up application, the
type of make-up they use,
the colors, costumes, etc.
Since we at COAI are an
International organization, I
want to get another look at
as many clowns as I can to
see what we can learn from
each other. I, along with
other Board members, will
be involved in the judging!
It will be a cultural
experience for me since I
don't speak Spanish. It will
now be my turn to see what
it is like with a language
barrier. We are having the
score sheets translated into
Spanish for the
competitors and
we will use an
English version to help
us score. This is going to
be such an educational
experience, which is
what all competitions/
conventions should be.
On another note, if
any of you have any
suggestions for topics for
me to write about and get
the help of the competition
staff, please let me know.
We are here for you and
want to improve on the
competitions in any way we
can.
Happy Holidays! ◆
All memberships to COAI are on an annual basis with dues payable July 1 of each year.
Join at the new member rate indicated any time of the year if the date is not June, July , or August — your membership will be prorated for the next year on the annual dues notice. When
you receive your dues notice in May following your sign-up, the prorated amount you should pay to bring your membership up to July of the new membership year will be indicated on your
notice. (For example, if a U.S. resident applied for a membership in October of 2005 and paid $30 to join, the membership would be extended to October, 2006. In May, 2006, the member
would receive a prorated dues renewal notice for $20 to extend the membership from October, 2006, to July, 2007.Then each year the annual fee of $25 would be billed in May for payment
by July 1. International and family memberships are similarly prorated.)
Last Walk-Arounds
Joe “Joko” Carey, COAI
#1490, passed away Oct. 22.
Joko the Clown was one of the
founding members of
Alley #54. Joe was 80 years
old.
Joe Carey started his career
as a professional boxer. He
gave that up when he saw the
lights on the ceiling of the old
Boston Garden a few too many times.
Joe's first taste of show business was as a stand up
comic in burlesque. His boxing career later became
part of his performance. He would be part of a skit
that was performed at real boxing matches. Joe would
enter the ring rather pompously. He would be cocky
and over confident. Of course he would be ‘knocked
out' in just a few seconds. Then the comedy would
begin. There would be a ‘slow motion' instant replay
of the bout. Joe would roll his stomach and chest
muscles with every punch. The unfolding of the
expressions on his face would also be very funny. His
‘girlfriend’ would always ‘flip’ him at the end of the
skit.
Another one of his specialties was his swimming
pool act. He would swim his way through the air as he
was diving off the board.
Joe's 9 to 5 job was driving a trash truck in
Somerville, MA. He was proud that he pulled many of
his props from the trash.
In later years he volunteered as a comic at senior
citizen shows. He also served as a crossing guard for
many years. He would have gifts for all of his students
at holidays throughout the year.
Joe served as a judge for COAI. At one convention
he came all bandaged up after surgery. He didn't want
to let the alley down by not showing up. ◆
Sight Gag - The Incredible Flying Hat!
Here’s a quick and easy way to flip your lid while earning lots of laughs!
Hold the hat with one hand on each side of the
brim. Place your index, ring, and pinkie fingers
on top of the brim. Your middle finger and
thumb should be under the brim.
To make the hat fly into the air, simply snap your
middle fingers up from your thumbs.
The hat will appear as if
it is springing off your head.
Wanna go tiger
hunting?
How are you going
to catch it?
I’ve got binoculars,
tweezers and a
paper bag.
I can pick him up with
the tweezers and put
him in the bag. Then I
will run away.
When I see a tiger, I will
turn the binoculars
around and he’ll look
real small.
Where will you go?
Leaving you holding
P.S. My thanks to Mrs. Kleinberger for giving up the bid for
The New Calliope

A Final Word from the Editor
Can you believe we are
almost at the end of the year?
Remember to take care of
yourself and your clown self
as you enter this busy season. I
know you will be out spreading
great joy.
I would also like to say
congratulations to Doris
Leonard who graces our cover
this issue. A few years ago I
suggested auctioning The New
Calliope cover to help raise
funds for our education fund. I
now find it hard to express my
utmost gratitutude to everyone
who has participated in this
worthwhile endeavor. For the
people who have graced our
cover in this program are very
special people.
The first time Miriam
Kleinberger appeared
compliments of her family.
A lady who has been dealing
with illness and not able to
clown like she used to, it was
so wonderful to acknowledge
her by placing her on the cover.
The following year an alley
pooled their resources and
bought the cover in honor of
Regina “Girlfiend” Onley. A
great clown who was tragically
taken from us all too soon.
And now, Doris Leonard,
who has been dealing with
cancer, is our Nov/Dec cover.
Her cover was bought for her
by a dear friend.
What did all our Cover Girls
have in common? Great love
for the art of clowning is one.
They all have great passion
for education. Their presence
on the cover reminds us how
important it is to continue to
pursue more education in our
craft.
The other thing that makes
my heart melt is knowing
they are loved. In all three
scenarios, the cover was bid
on and purchased because the
bidder(s) had great love for this
individual. How special is that?
