This new display will provide an opportunity to exhibit<br />

change part way through to allow more items to be<br />

displayed so you will want to back to see the changes.<br />

The Alberni Valley Museum offers a variety of school programs for<br />

Kindergarten through Grade Twelve classes. Interactive and engaging<br />

programs are offered at three sites: the Community Museum,<br />

McLean Mill National Historic Site and the Maritime Discovery<br />

Centre. Opportunities to discover Port Alberni and Provincial History,<br />

from First Nations Culture and Pioneer experiences to Forestry and<br />

Maritime heritage our programs address many of the prescribed learning outcomes of<br />

the Social Studies Curriculum. The Beta Sigma Phi Legacy Fund connects our students<br />

with the museum by providing the funds to cover the program fee for all Port Alberni<br />

School classes attending museum programs. In recognition of the sorority’s 60th<br />

Anniversary local chapters formed this legacy fund to enable Port Alberni youth to<br />

learn about their history and heritage.<br />

Travel back in time and discover Port Alberni life in the 1890’s.<br />

Focuses on traditional Nuu-chah-nulth culture and utilizes the museum collection.<br />

Explore the history of lighthouses, west coast exploration and navigation at the<br />

Maritime Centre.<br />

Provides an opportunity for your students to discover the work of archaeologists.<br />

How has clothing and fashioned changed over the last 150 years? This fun and active<br />

program will focus on our new exhibit “Dressing Port Alberni” and will provide an<br />

opportunity to explore the exhibit and take part in age appropriate activities.<br />

A Pioneer Christmas - Grades K-3<br />

Available December 4 to 21, <strong>2018</strong><br />

A fun and active programme that introduces the concepts of history, the past and<br />

community to young students through a familiar theme-Christmas! Students will visit<br />

with a Pioneer Time Traveller and discover what home life, school life and Christmas<br />

would be like in the 1890’s. They will experience storytelling, craft making and discover<br />

an important part of Port Alberni’s History. This is a very special Christmas programme<br />

Alberni District Historical Society<br />

Archives<br />

The Alberni District Historical Society manages the community<br />

archives, which are located in the Museum. Volunteers make<br />

the archives available Tuesdays and Thursdays, 10:00 am to 3:00<br />

pm or by appointment. Call 723-2181, local 267 (on the above<br />

days) to make arrangements. The archives preserves and collects<br />

the community’s paper treasures. If you have anything you feel<br />

should be added to the archives or you are unsure about, make<br />

sure you bring it in.<br />

Over 50’s Activities<br />

The Echo Sunshine Club is a volunteer driven, membership based organization, whose purpose is to provide opportunities and activities to improve and<br />

enhance the quality of life for adults and seniors aged 50 years or better. The Sunshine Club offers a wide range of programs and activities from card games,<br />

dancing, music, woodworking and bus trips to hiking, table tennis, tai chi, volleyball and pickleball – just to name a few!<br />

Anyone 50+ years is welcome to join the Sunshine Club. Membership fees are $70 per person. The fiscal year operates from September to August. A<br />

membership allows you access to any of the Sunshine Club programs and activities. The Sunshine Club office is located at Echo Centre (4255 Wallace Street).<br />

Not sure if you want to join? Come give us a try! Individuals can go to any activity once before buying a membership. This gives you a chance to see if the<br />

activity works for you before you commit to a membership.<br />

Come out and enjoy a great afternoon<br />

of floor curling, fun and socialization.<br />

Floor curling is very similar to ice<br />

curling but is easily adapted to<br />

accommodate those players who have<br />

back or knee problems. There is no<br />

sweeping and it is played indoors twice<br />

a week at Glenwood Centre. Wooden<br />

rocks with handles and shuffle board<br />

wax are used for the game. Floor<br />

curling is an easy game to learn and<br />

beginners are always welcome. No<br />

previous curling experience is required.<br />

All equipment is supplied and drop-ins<br />

are welcome. We would love for you<br />

to join us. New teams are drawn every<br />

morning. We encourage you to come<br />

Pickleball has arrived in Port Alberni!<br />

Pickle ball is a fusion of all the racquet<br />

sports. It is played on a badmintonsized<br />

court and uses paddles (similar<br />

to table tennis) and a whiffle ball. It<br />

is a user-friendly game, easy to learn<br />

and is a very social sport. All ages and<br />

abilities can enjoy this game. Beginners<br />

are always more than welcome. If you<br />

have ever enjoyed a racquet sport, this<br />

is a great game for you. We encourage<br />

you to drop by and join in the fun.<br />

Don’t worry if you haven’t played<br />

before because you will pick up the<br />

game in no time! All paddles, balls<br />

and nets are supplied. We play at Gyro<br />

Recreation Park until the weather<br />

makes it impossible to play outside<br />

Family Stick & Puck<br />

Here’s some family fun!<br />

We’ve added an opportunity this season for families to come out together<br />

to have fun and practice their skating, stick handling and shooting<br />

skills. Please bring your own helmets, gloves, sticks and pucks. Parents/<br />

caregivers must skate with their children on the ice. To ensure the safety<br />

and enjoyment of all participants, NO GAMES are permitted at this session.<br />

The Alberni Valley Multiplex staff are offering private skating lessons<br />

for those more comfortable with a one to one session with a skating<br />

instructor. Lessons are offered as single sessions which are 30 minutes<br />

in duration. These lessons are great for those just learning to skate,<br />

or others who may want to work on specific aspects of skating, i.e.<br />

stopping, backwards skating, crossovers, etc.<br />

Lessons are $ 25 per 30 minute instruction period (Adults add GST)<br />

Active Communities Learn to Skate<br />

Our Learn to Skate program is for children that want to improve their skating. The<br />

Learn to Skate program caters to pre-school and school-age children at any level<br />

who are wanting to improve their skating in a fun and motivating way.<br />

The Active Communities Learn to Skate program was created as an initiative to<br />

standardize the recreational component of learning to skate, in much the same<br />

way the Red Cross swimming program does for Aquatics. This ensures high<br />

quality program content, materials, and instruction for arenas providing Learn to<br />

Skate in their communities.<br />

All Parent & Tot and Pre-school lessons are 30-minute instructional periods. All<br />

school age lessons are 45-minute instructional periods.<br />

2-4 yrs<br />

First time skaters will get comfortable on the ice with an adult, who is comfortable on skates. The adult will be given<br />

tools and skills to assist their child in accomplishing the basics of skating. The instructor will circulate class to assist<br />

the group. Skills adults will work on with their child are: balancing on two feet, touching toes, marching, falling down<br />

and getting up! Participants must wear skates and CSA helmets. Parent & Tot is not a prerequisite to Preschool 1.<br />

3-6 yrs<br />

This class utilizes a 1:5 instructor to participant ratio to ensure that the child builds confidence and has fun on the<br />

ice. Participants will be taught basic skating skills including: balancing on two feet, touching toes, walking forwards,<br />

marching, and falling down and getting up.<br />

3-6 yrs<br />

This class is for children who can skate independently. Skills include: gliding, two foot jumps, making snow, and<br />

walking backwards. Prerequisite Pre-School 1.<br />

Children will learn skills in this course including: v-pushes, one foot gliding, two foot jump while gliding, walking<br />

backwards with some glide, two foot quarter-turns on the spot, and stopping. Prerequisite Pre-School 2.<br />

A 45-minute class in the medium (waist-deep)<br />

pool using a variety of resistance equipment in<br />

rotating stations. Insructor stands on the pool<br />

deck to direct the class and provide assistance at<br />

• 5 minutes of warm-up followed by<br />

• 35 minutes of cardio and strength training<br />

stations<br />

• 5-minute warm down/stretch at the end.<br />

Are you uncertain where your child should register in swim<br />

Please read our “Readiness <strong>Guide</strong>” flyer- available at Echo Aquatic<br />

Front Desk, or feel free to ask for an appointment during our<br />

regularly scheduled swim lessons. A qualified Red Cross Water<br />

Safety Instructor will be happy to assess your child’s swimming<br />

ability, and recommend an appropriate level choice for you.<br />

Report Cards<br />

Bring your previous level report card to your child’s instructor<br />

on the 1st day of lessons. It will be returned with comments and<br />

award on the last lesson day.<br />

Masters Advanced Adult Swimming<br />

Masters is for Advanced Adult Swimmers with established<br />

strokes and swim skills of varying ability from recreational<br />

to competitive. Our coach will provide advice to<br />

swimmers to help them meet their swimming speed and<br />

fitness goals, with practice sets and drills for various skill<br />

levels. Strokes will be monitored and help will be offered<br />

with efficiency.<br />

Junior Lifeguard Program<br />

Lifeguarding and swimming skills for youth 11-15 years<br />

field of Aquatics will find these sessions helpful in preparation<br />

for those goals.<br />
