Boy kills step father in Enugu Africa and religion
CHINA By Mbadiwe Okwor
THE oldest man and
spiritual head of
Ogrute, Enugu Ezike,
headquarters of Igbo Eze
North Local Government
in Enugu State, Onyishi
Eze Nwaonu, has been
allegedly murdered by his
step-son.
Also, his counterpart in
Umuopu, Enugu Ezike,
Onyishi Odo
Nwamamah, was also
reported to have died
mysteriously same day.
Their deaths have been
linked to the struggle for
the headship of the Enwe
cult group in the old
Ogrute community,
comprising Ogrute,
Umuida, Umuopu,
Umuidoko and
Umuasannya among
others.
According to Ogrute
tradition, the position of
the headship of Enwe Cult
group was usually
reserved for the so-called
slaves while the position
of Onyishi was for
freeborns, until recently
when it was discovered
that it was more lucrative
to be the Agu Enwe than
the Onyishi. The onyishi
title is reserved for the
oldest person in the village
or community, who is
equally regarded as the
supreme leader,
according to the tradition.
According to sources in
the two communities, the
Enwe cult is a powerful
group while its head, Agu
Enwe, is revered.
Vanguard gathered that
the late Nwaonu was
strangled to death by his
step-son who was
reportedly promised N5
million to kill him and
bring his royal cap to the
sponsor.
As at the time Vanguard
visited the residence of the
late Nwaonuh yesterday,
mourners were still
trooping in to condole with
the family.
Already, three persons
have been arrested
including the suspected
step son by the police in
Enugu Ezike in
connection with the
murder.
A senior police officer at
the Igbo Eze North
Division in Ogrute
confirmed the deaths but
referred Vanguard to
Enugu for further
clarifications.
Enugu State Police
Public Relations Officer,
CP Enugu, Dan Malam
Ebere Amaraizu, said he
had not been briefed about
the matter when he spoke
with Vanguard on
telephone yesterday, but
promised to call back later.
However, members of
late Eze Nwaonuh’s
kindred confirmed the
killing of their patriarch by
a member of the
household.
They said that one of
their late father’s sons and
former Chairman of
Igboeze North Local
Government, Mr
Bonaventure Onuh, was
the person who could
comment on the matter
when Vanguard visited the
family house of the
deceased, adding
however, that he was busy
running around over the
incident.
Speech impaired Bongos Ikwue’s daughter wins international
speech contest
OMEI
Bongos-
Ikwue, daughter of
music legend, Bongos
Ikwue, has made Nigeria
proud by rising above
speech impairment to win
an international speech
competition in Accra,
Ghana.
Bongos-Ikwue, member
of the Abuja District of
Toastmaster, an affiliate of
the Toastmasters
International, a worldwide
non-profit educational
organization that
empowers individuals to
become more effective
communicators and
leaders, defied her
congenital stuttering
challenges to achieve the
feat.
Her winning speech,
entitled: “Release it,”
focused on the themes of
bravery, passion and
generosity, which she used
a moving story to illustrate
that “we only receive
extraordinary things when
we let go of the average or
ordinary ones.” The
speeches were judged on
content, organization,
gestures and style.
Speaking on what
inspired her victory as a
public speaker, in spite of
her speech impairment
challenge, she said:
“When it comes to
connecting with an
audience, Toastmasters, as
an organization has taught
me how to be confident
and focused. In fact, since
1924, Toastmasters
International has helped
people from diverse
backgrounds become more
confident speakers/
communicators. It has
shown me that every
speaking opportunity is an
opportunity to inspire
people in an unforgettable
way that a host of other
Toastmasters have always
inspired me.”
With this victory, Bongos-
Ikwue will take part in the
World Championship of
Public Speaking at the
Toastmasters International
Convention on August 25,
in Chicago, Illinois, United
States of America. She will
compete with 105 other
•OMEI Bongos-Ikwue
winners from districts
around the world.
The very elated Nigerian
lady, said that representing
her District at the
International Speech
Contest “feels like the
decisive stamp of victory
over my speech
impediment,” adding that
she is “looking forward to
competing on a much
larger stage in Chicago.”
Bongos-Ikwue is Public
Health editor for E-
Proofers, based in Abuja.
The Toastmasters
International Speech
Contest began in 1938 and
is the world’s largest
speech contest, involving
30,000 participants from
141 countries. It culminates
with the popular World
Championship of Public
Speaking held annually at
the organization’s
International Convention.
Dokubo creating new entrepreneurs through Amnesty Programme; Restoring
Peace in N’Delta
By Mary Agbejoh
IN line with President
Mohammadu Buhari
renewed drive to transform
the Niger Delta and restore
enduring peace, the
Coordinator, Presidential
Amnesty Programme (PAP),
Prof. Charles Dokubo, has
presented amnesty
entrepreneurs starter packs
to 150 Trained Ex-Militant
Youths in Bayelsa State,
assuring that the Amnesty
programme will be
reviewed to refocus on its
mandate and programmes
in order to produce the
desired results.
“As his core mandate the
Amnesty boss was in
Bayelsa yesterday to flag
off the start off pack to
empower the youth to
regain their self-worth, and
to contribute to the economy
of the nation,
Prof. Dokubo, while
presenting Amnesty Started
Pack, made up of power
generating set, deep Freezer
and plastic tanks among
others, in Olubiri community
of the Opokuma clan in
Kolokuma/Opokuma area of
Bayelsa, said that the
empowerment items is
meant to establish
beneficiaries as employer of
labour and reduce cases of
unemployment in their
various areas.
He charged the
beneficiaries to make
judicious use of the
equipment provided by the
Federal Government
through the Amnesty
Office, noting that the
gesture was a bold step in
Prof. Charles Dokubo
the concerted efforts by
government to deepen
peace, safety and security
in the Niger Delta. He
also lamented that the
initiative had not
produced expected results
in the past as many of the
over 20, 000 ex-militants
trained by the Amnesty
office since inception eight
years ago, still remained
unemployed.
is currently the world’s leading economic
power. In China there are no records of churches.
Finland has the most stable economy in the world today.
There are less than 20 churches in Finland!
Switzerland has the second most stable economy in the world.
Switzerland has fewer than 30 churches!
Denmark is the third most stable economy in the world;
there are about 23 churches in Denmark.
These countries are considered to have the highest number
of atheists, but they are blessed!
Come to Africa, there are more than 10,000 churches per
region including 4,000 churches in the city of Yaoundé alone!
4100 churches in the city of Abidjan!
7000 churches in the only city of Kinshasa!
10,000 churches in the only city of Lagos in Nigeria!
And this is 430 times more numerous than the whole of
Switzerland!
In Africa, we have more churches than schools and hospitals
combined!
More pastors than doctors.
Everyone is born again!
Everyone claims to be covered with the blood of Jesus!
Some single women in revival churches even claim Jesus is
their husband.
Everyone is filled with the Holy Spirit!
However, none of these claims reflect the moral elevation
that helps in building a society.
We are among the laziest, the most deceiving, the most
corrupt, the most hypocritical, the most hateful on the planet
today, with all our churches!
Our people need to distinguish between religion and stupidity
or between spirituality and tradition!
WaterAid galvanises entrepreneurs
for Enugu sanitation
By Dennis Agbo, Enugu
UNITED States International Non-profit Organisa
tion, WaterAid, has commenced galvanisation of entrepreneurs
towards improving sanitation practices in Enugu
state.
WaterAid, which had in the past ten years assisted in provision
of safe water in the state, said it was back
to scale up sanitation practices while not leaving out provision
of water completely in the state.
WaterAid Director of programmes, Mr. Anddy Omoluabi
made the disclosure in Enugu, in a sanitation projects stakeholders
validation workshop. Omoluabi said, “We are in Enugu
to test how a market based approach to sanitation could be
effective and the result of the research was quite interesting
and we are looking for entrepreneurs hungry for the business.
“Unlike in the past that we provided water, we are here
for sanitation project and the intention of the project is to see
how we can encourage entrepreneurs to be part of sanitation
solution, to improving sanitation in the state.
“We’ve gone beyond service delivery in water projects to
where we now influence the government to take up responsibility
of providing water to its citizens. This time we are
applying best practices, technology to bring about solutions
to water crisis in Enugu.” Special Adviser to Governor Ifeanyi
Ugwuanyi of Enugu state, Mrs. Felicia Ikpeama said
that government with its sanitation agencies had created
access to over 96,600 users in various communities of the
state.
She noted that power was a major issue in the provision of
water to both urban and rural areas, adding that agencies
such as DFID and SDGs have helped to improve on water
supply in the state.
Prof. Dokubo also noted
that the presentation of the
Entrepreneur Starter Pack
is the last Phase in the
process of Amnesty
Training, “this will show
that the Niger Delta people
are not lazy but only need
Opportunities. “
Emphasizing that if the
right opportunities are
created like the present
Buhari-led administration
is doing, the people of the
Niger Delta would not
have been suffering if the
scheme had lived up to
expectations in the past,
the reason he said, made
his office upon resumption
embarked on a study of the
failures in implementations
of the programme and took
a decision to refocus the
scheme.
He said: “The amnesty
programme has taken a
new turn. Amnesty has
been here for a very long
time, but those of us from
this state have not gained
effectively. If we have most
of our people will not be
suffering.
With the new drive by
Dokubo it’s clear that this
administration was
focusing on the
reintegration phase of the
programme and President
Muhammadu Buhari was
interested in the scheme
reaching rural
communities.
The Testimony of One of
the Beneficiaries of the
Amnesty Starter Pack, Mr
Amadi Wonjoku summed it up.
“Through Dokubo’s interface
with the Ex-Agitators We are
now feeling the impact of the
President Mohammadu
Buhari-led Government.”
