Editor’s Letter
Last weekend at the Freemasons Hall in London,
scores of models walked the runway, to showcase
the collections of over 50 designers to an audience,
hungry for African fashion and culture.
But beyond the entertainment which the show
provided, collections usually come to point the way
of things to come fashion-wise, and how it
eventually, determines what we stock in our
wardrobes for the next one year.
Some interesting trends popped up on the
runway and quite feminine too. Yemisi Suleiman who
covered the show, highlights some of these trends.
Page 5-7.
We took interest in Statement sleeves and the
asymmetric style, two trends that were hits at the
show, and asked our correspondents to show you
how to style them. While Linda Orajekwe shows
how to style asymmetric dresses page 10, Rita
Chioma shows how you can truly make a fashion
statement with statement sleeves. Page 11.
You can make a grand entrance too when you put
your best foot toward, in one of these pairs of
party shoes
In our interview segment, read about Lanre
Howells and his innovative take on farm resort.
Every woman would love this get- away place,
where you can let your hair down, exhale, and
possibly make money! Find out how on page 8-9.
Enjoy the fashion plus what
our columnists have to serve.
Expectations
From Fashion Shows
- Designers Speak
by - Yemisi Suleiman
As part of exclusive moments from the recently held Africa
Fashion Week London (AFWL) 2018, we asked some designers to
share with us, life as a designer and expectations from a fashion
show. This was what they said.
I expect more
people to know me
from a show
Mary Martins, Creative
Head, Mary Martins
London
Life has been amazing. Two weeks ago, I was in
Accra. I went for a fashion week in Accra where I
showcased my “Article 10 the royal collection”.
Article 10, meaning by law, freedom of creative
expression. It is a royal collection inspired by
Meghan Markle,
From a show, I expect to get more
people to know me. I am an
international fashion designer.
Africa Fashion Week London
has created a lot of buzz for
me. It does a lot for African
designers and basically it
has let more people in
the world know who I am.
I have been invited to
headline the Canada
Africa Fashion Week.
Like they say, if God
opens the door, no man
can close it.
Life as a designer has
been amazing
Van Else, Creative Head,
Van Else
Life as a designer has been a Life roller
coaster. I started the brand in 2012 but after
my mother suffered a stroke, I took a break
and started again in 2014. My first official
collection showcased at the Africa Fashion
Week London. In 2016, I was recognized by
British Vogue and Elle UK as interesting new
brand. Now, there are lots of magazines from
the US who want my story. I have been invited
to the African diaspora in the United States as
well, the African studies in Arizona, and I have
been to fashion weeks in Barcelona, Geneva
and now, I have been invited to Dublin,
Liverpool, the Caribbean
and Istanbul. So it’s
really
amazing for me what
happened in just four
years.
Most people think I only
do African print, but I do
everything. So fashion
shows give me
opportunity to
showcase what I
do and help me
get connected
again.
Fashion show gives
opportunity to network
Samson Soboye, Head Designer, Soboye
It’s been good. It’s been busy, but I’m loving the new lease of life and
inspiration from Africa. I’m using my cultural heritage in what I do, but in a
more modern and creative way. Platforms like the African Fashion Week
London, is a great platform for me to launch designs and discover new
talents. So, I am loving what they do in focusing and refocusing the
creative industry in London.
I expect more exposure. People that didn’t know about me now
know me. It gives a chance to present new ideas in a new and
fresh way, and also to network and meet new people, and to
showcase what I do.
I look forward to
bulk buyers
Oreva Okowa, Head
Designer, Signature Secret
Life as a designer has not been very easy. It
has been challenging but worth it. The
challenges involve production, coming over to
London from Nigeria and putting things together
for the show. Generally, production is hectic
because as a designer, you have to be creative,
bringing up new ideas and designs. People
don’t like to see old designs. So you have to
come up with new designs. But I enjoy it all, it’s
my passion, my life and I love it.
For every fashion show, as usual, we are
looking out for buyers, bulk buyers, people who
buy for industries and countries. That is what
we expect. And for me, I have ready to wear in
all kinds, so it is very easy for me to break into
the market.
A show needs
promotion
Jite Newton, Creative
head, Tobams Colour
I think it has been interesting but, the African
market in terms of designing is very fierce. We
want our clothing to be recognized around the
world but the perception is not there because
there is no sustainability. And that is where it
gets difficult. You have to keep going,
identity your market. We
want to
create an identity with
African
Prints, want to be like
the
Burberry of Africa, where
people can identity that
this is an African label and
it is here to stay.
From a show like this,
I expect that it
should be
promoted
more. The
promotion is
needed
because it is a
great show and
it’s expanding. I
think we need to
move around a bit
and push around.
REPORTAGE
Olanrewaju Howells:
Pursuing Innovative Projects
By - Jemi Ekunkunbor
Tucked away in a serene place in Lekki, Lagos is Varden Farms and Resort.
On meeting the Managing Director whom I like to call the Chief Farmer,
there was nothing to show that the man standing in front of me has his
hands dug in the not-so-tush business of farming. “Our goal” he says,
“is to create a new generation of farmers and to get people to fall in love with
farming.”
Olanrewaju Howells, a Mass Communication graduate of Ogun State Polytechnic,
Abeokuta, has his hands in many pies; Hospitality, Entertainment, Real Estate,
Agriculture and Mass Media. The certified member of the International Real
Estate Management Institute is the MD of Beyond Buildings Investment Limited, a
premium Real Estate company, aimed at redefining asset management and Real
Estate investment culture.
His latest addition to his chain of businesses is the Varden Farms and resort
which was birthed in 2016, a journey which began two years earlier. His passion
for developing products for the emerging generation in Africa remains one of his
priorities and his move from Real Estate to farming attests to that.
In this encounter at his City Mall Office, the founder of Rent Masters Realtors Ltd,
a pioneer online rental and home management services spoke about his new
passion a get-away haven for investors and families.
With Varden farms, are you taking on the
whole value chain of farming?
We are taking on the whole value chain that
is why we have the Varden camps, it is an agro
co-operative, multipurpose society. There is
a co-operative where we drop funds that are
being deployed. There is a Varden farms that
handles the production of the raw materials;
there is a Varden foods that handles the
processing and distribution to the shops.
Where are the farmers from?
We have different professionals who
members of the co-operative, and every
member is a farmer. If they are not actively
involved, they cannot fall in love with farming.
In order for them to fall in love with farming, we
have to create an environment and ambience
that will make them want to live the comfort of
their homes, and come to the farm and that is
where the resort is.
A farm resort is not common and
sometimes, people especially women, look
out for places like this where they can be
close to nature and away from the noise. For
you why the resort?
Two things happened to us, five years ago
when we did the first farming scheme; our
investors couldn’t go to the farms because if
they want to come, they want to come with their
families and feel safe. Five years ago also,
we discovered that, farm houses are privately
owned. There were no commercial farm houses.
So in other for us to create that, we needed to
merge it with the farm. So as a member, I can
own an apartment here, but when I am not there,
the apartment is making money.
On the second part, I don’t have to own an
apartment. I can book one. And while here, learn
a lot of activities about farming; fisheries, how to
paddle a canoe etc. What we are trying to do is
to make sure that the new generation is able to
pass it across to the next one indirectly.
Would you say now that you are using
tourism to drive the farm?
Not just tourism, what we are actually doing
is creating a new mind set for people who
believe that farming is boring, dirty, and for
the uneducated. We are trying to merge agro
tourism and farming and use
that as a bait to people who
would ordinarily not want to leave
the comfort of their homes to come to
the farm. So, I can stay over at the farm and
still enjoy my gym, still enjoy my lawn tennis, still
enjoy internet and my freshness.
If I have a weekend to take my girlfriends
out, what do you think they will enjoy at the
resort?
The beauty of it is that, each of the apartments
has its kitchen: which means, you can go into the
farm market, get items and explore a new recipe.
Also, there are lots of activities you can engage
in; you guys can do your yoga, you can jog round
the estate, you can take on games. You can learn
about new things that ordinarily, the attention of
the city would not allow you explore. While you
are there, you guys can gather to pray. Women
like to pray.
The issue of security is a big concern
especially as we have seen people being
attacked in supposedly safe places. How safe
is the resort?
“what we are
actually doing is
creating a new
mind set for people
who believe that
farming is boring,
dirty, and for the
uneducated”
One of the things we have
done is that we have installed a
perimeter fence around the farm. It means
that it takes someone to scale the fence to come
in. Another thing we have done is that we have
a lot of security equipments in the farm. We also
have well-trained military men on ground, as well
as our own patrol team that are permanently
there. We are not just relying on manpower
there is a place of technology. People can be rest
assured that there is adequate security.
Real Estate and farming are quite some miles
apart. How did you make the move?
It is interesting when I hear this question every
time. What is called Real Estate is the land, what
I use it for is the application of Real Estate. So, if
I have a piece of land, I can build a house on it,
someone else can use it to build an office, while
another can use the same land to build a school.
So there is actually no movement. We are trying
to tell people, that real estate is far beyond luxury
estates. We don’t need to restrict Real Estate
to just building residential houses. So going into
farming means I am just using part of the land
for something different from houses.
What is life as a farmer and how has
the farming experience been?
Interesting and humbling. One of
the things farming has taught me
is the ability to build patience
capacities. You can’t be a
farmer when you are impatient
because it takes time for the
seed to germinate. So you
learn patience and you also
learn to see beautiful things
from the onset. You can
picture a cucumber farm
and others can’t see it.
Farming will teach you
that and help you shape
your vision. You will
learn to understand that
every part is important,
weeding is as important
as plowing and it helps
you to understand the
power of God. If you want
to see the real power of
God, just see what looks
like nothing becomes
something and that is what
farming does.
Let’s take a look at the
country and the activities
of the herdsmen, if
you were to advise
based on your
farming experience,
what would you say
that can solve the
herdsmen killings?
I do know clearly that
when the purpose of a
thing is not clear the abuse
is inevitable. Decades and
maybe centuries back, people
have been rearing cattle, and
they will keep rearing cattle. Our
problem is that we found ourselves in an
environment where our people either don’t want
to face the reality or just like to play politics. I do
believe that cattle-rearing is business. But the life
of a human being is more important
An original cattle rearer who is a farmer, will
not go after anyone’s life. He knows full well
that the way his cow is important to him, is the
way the crop is to the other farmer because
they have the same emotional attachment to
what they are doing. So how can someone who
knows how it feels when something happens to
his cattle, feels nothing for the other man when
they are invading his farm? That tells you that
there is a fundamental peril somewhere and only
the government can help here. It is far beyond
what the farmers alone can do. If the leadership
is ready to fix this, they can always reach a
compromise.
When you are not doing all of these, how do
you like to relax?
Interestingly I think one of the things I have
learnt with time is that, business built around
passion is good because while everybody is
working, you are enjoying what you do? So, I
don’t really have a special time out. But when
I am not really working, I love to take time out
to play with family, friends. I love to visit places
or people. I love to stay close to kids, I love to
spend my time doing the things that are I lacked
as a child.
Starting business very early was very
challenging for me, so with time the attention I
didn’t get from people then, some of them didn’t
really understand my ideology, so it was a bit
tough. Nigeria is a place where everyone is so
busy and they can easily neglect the people who
look up to them for something. So when I am not
really active what I do, is to look after those who
look up to me and just listen to them.
How has Real Estate and farming shaped the
way you dress?
I am not so sure, but when I am not in
the office I am on the site. When I go to a
construction site, I dress to fit in, and that
automatically, fits into the dress of a farmer. On
the day I go to site, I look like the regular farmer.
When I am in the office, I wear suit and tie. So
what I have been able to do is to know my days
at the office, and my days at site and that creates
a balance for me.
What do you like really?
Well, I wear my Jeans and my boots that
works for me.
What about travel?
One of the things that I naturally do is travel.
Travel is a big tool of education, you learn new
things, you see things from different perspective,
you see things you didn’t use to pay attention to.
Travel also broadens the capacity of the human
mind and what we can do when we set our mind
to it.
There is something about the Asian world that
I like. It is really challenging; the way they see
everything, the way they build their houses etc.
It is technology driven. For a travel destination,
I think I will take Asia, whether it is China,
Singapore, Korea or Thailand. I also like them
for the fact that they are very simple, and causal
with the way they do things.
If we come back home don’t you think
something is really wrong with us?
We have a lot of people suffering from self
esteem and poverty has done so bad to people
that every little opportunity, they have to show to
someone else they are better.
Also, our value system is not properly placed
and that is why we are where we are. It is even
more serious for this generation that wants
the very few things that is going to separate the
champions and the mediocre of this generation
is time.
1. Wear To A Night Out
On a free A-line asymmetric
sleeveless dress, pair with
a long necklace. For an
easy-going look, rock it with
a pair of flat sandals, while
for a party night with friends,
switch to a pair of high heel
sandals.
2. Wear To Beach
Most times, asymmetric
dresses are free in their
form and that can be
perfect for summer on
the beach with a pair
of sandals. But to turn
this look around for a
waistline with a fancy
belt. That adds up to
the look while it serves
a functional purpose.
Complete the look with a
Here, she shares her
fashion, style tips as well as
her projects.
What inspires you?
I’m greatly inspired by other women, women
doing amazing things at different levels and
stages of their lives. Top of that list is my mum
who embodies the meaning of motherhood and
career to me. She’s joined by my sisters girls
who shock me everyday with their aweinspiring
and age-defying moves, and to round
it off, amazons including Mo Abudu, Oprah
Winfrey and Ellen Degeneres who’ve gone
ahead and proven to me that there’s absolutely
nothing I can’t do as a TV Girl as long as I set
my mind to it.
Apart from TV, what else are you into?
When I’m not on TV, I’m hosting live events.
It’s an aspect of my job that I particularly love
as almost nothing beats the thrill of interacting
and engaging with so many people in real time.
Do you have any project you’re working
on?
I do, and I’m very excited about them.
Expect a show on TV soon, one that I can
promise will be equal parts entertaining and
engaging, and will definitely, make you happy!
Before that, I have a campaign in the works that
celebrates body positivity and total confidence
You are seen as a fashionista, what
inspires what you wear to events?
The theme of the event and my mood that
Who are those top designers you love
Everyone knows I love my Fablane by Derin!
I’m also totally in love with Lanre Da Silva
Which designer outfit do you covet to
wear?
I’d love to wear Lisa Folawiyo and Bridget
Awosika’s pieces. The former has some of the
best prints I’ve ever seen and the latter does
such amazing work, striking a balance between
structured and romantic pieces which I love.
What are those
Reawakening Sex After Abstinence
Often times, some people take the decision to
stay off sex, this could be as a result of religious
purposes, personal cleansing/ desire. In all these,
no one hardly thinks about how the side effects of
sexual inactivity can affect the sexual organs, and
the sexual lives they intend going back to after the
period of celibacy. Dr. Rachael Ross, a certified
sexologist and a family physician, explains the
effects of celibacy on the genitals. “Sometimes,
your genitals go to sleep if it’s been a while.’’ she
went on to say that “after periods of sexual
inactivity, there tends to be a decrease in your
sexual responsiveness.’’ Some women complain
about a lack of sexual desire, vaginal dryness and
inability to become aroused after experiencing
extended period of abstinence. As for men,
erections may be difficult to maintain when fresh out
of celibacy, but this is normal according to this
sexologist.
Anybody can decide to resume the act of love
making at any age, and at any time as long as such
a person is willing to invest a little time, patience,
practice, and a little assistance if necessary. “Invest
in condoms and water based lube” suggests Dr.
Ross. ‘’The vagina may not be as moist as it used to
be, and erections may not be as strong as before
but, like anything, they both need a warm up first.’’
Research has it that, indulging in regular sex can
aid your immune system, lower blood pressure, and
act as stress buster. Apart from health benefits, it
actually feels good when you get it right.
Most times, sexual intimacy just comes to an
halt, perhaps months or even years, and some
partners might notice a decline, or count the
number of times it took place. This is more common
than people think it to be. This is because it is
always at the back of your mind even when you
refuse to give it a thought.
Funny enough, there are intricate mix of issues
why lovemaking stops. It is important you know, that
this does not mean something is necessary wrong
with you or your spouse. Though the longer you
stay off, the more awkward and uncomfortable the
feeling.
Ready to hook up after refraining from
intercourse and it seems as if you don’t know what/
where to start from. Just follow the tips below;
Build up your sexual desire: this actually starts
for the ladies long before the act in the bedroom.
Use desire to lat the foundation.
Begin with non sexual physical touch. You would
observe that the long abstinence from sex, makes
you avoid physical touch and consequently a
passionate kiss. When you get back, you have to
take one step at a time. No pressure, don’t force it
and if possible, have a talk with your mate about it.
Admit the place of sexual intimacy in your life
and make changes. Research has shown that there
two key component to boosting passion in a
relationship. Be a very good friend with your spouse
and make sex a priority. The second key might not
be important to you but, if it is important to your
partner, then, it’s important to your union.
Copulation can aid your closeness because of the
hormones that it helps you to release, which help in
bonding and connecting you with your mate.
To make sex comfortable when ready to go all
the way, begin with foreplay. This helps stimulate
natural lubrication; also, try water-based lubricant
such as KY jelly and if sex remains painful, ask your
doctor for vaginal estrogen therapy available as
cream, tablet, ring or other treatment options.
Experiment and explore with new sex positions/
styles, to find what feels best and most comfortable.
For partners concerned about getting back into love
making after celibacy, tantric sex can help in
reacquainting intimacy, waking up the genitals and
rekindling sexual desire.
Do appreciate your spouse even when you are
not having intercourse, as your significant part may
feel unloved and undesired. Complimenting your
mate helps them feel loved and wanted. This will
help your spouse understand your sexual feelings
and thereby, contributing to more harmony and
ease between you two.
Invest in quality time with your spouse. After
abstaining from sex, it is likely you might have
disconnected from your spouse sexually. As well as
not spending as much time with each other as you
used to: thus, getting physically close should be a
priority and this can easily swim into the bedroom.
Bear in mind that reestablishing your emotional
connection will be
easier with your
partner’s support.
So starting afresh
after a decline in
sexual activity, is not
an easy job but, it is
very possible. Most
times, the first step
is always the
hardest but you can
take it with the aid of
your partner.
Just note that
there is more to sex
than copulating. Acts
such as talking,
touching and
kissing, can help to
promote intimacy
resulting in sexual
fulfillment.
Tooth Care
Our teeth are designed to help chew food and
speak clearly. They also affect the way our faces
and smiles look. Maintaining oral hygiene is very
important and brushing should be supplemented
with regular visits to the Dentist and Dental
hygienist to prevent common dental problems
such as tooth decay (dental caries), gum disease
(periodontal disease) and dental erosion.
Tooth Decay occurs when plaque attacks the
enamel of teeth. Soon after brushing your teeth, a
thin sticky layer of bacteria forms on the surface
of all the teeth. This layer is known as Plaque.
Once sugar containing food is eaten, the bacteria
feast on this for energy and in turn produce acid.
This acid removes minerals from the hard
surface of the tooth known as the Enamel. This
process of demineralisation softens the enamel
which may eventually lead to tooth decay.
The saliva in the mouth helps to neutralise the
acid and contains minerals thus replacing the
minerals lost during the acid attack. This process
is known as remineralisation. The processes of
demineralisation and remineralisation occur
each time we consume sugar containing food and
drinks. If sugar is consumed too often, the saliva
does not have the chance to fully remineralise the
enamel of the teeth leading to a gradual
weakening and eventual decay. A hole or cavity
forms which is usually painful.
Gum Disease which is also known as
periodontal disease is very common and affects
most adults. When plaque is allowed to form for
extended periods of time, it collects near the
gums forming a hard calcified substance known
as Tartar or Calculus. As a result, the gums
become red, swollen and irritated signaling the
early stage of Gingivitis.
If gingivitis is left untreated, the gums
separate from the teeth leaving gaps known as
periodontal pockets. More plaque and tartar may
get trapped and infected in these pockets leading
to loosening of the teeth and possible need for
extraction. Prevention is geared towards
controlling plaque and tartar build up.
• TOOTHBRUSH, DENTAL
FLOSS AND TOOTHPASTE
Dental Erosion describes the gradual wear of
the tooth surfaces from acid present in juices and
fizzy drinks. Dental erosion is irreversible and
may lead to sensitivity and pain. Drinking such
drinks with a straw placed near the back of the
mouth will help reduce the amount of contact
between the teeth and the acid contents. Babies
and toddlers should not drink juice or fizzy
drinks out of a feeding bottle as this may lead to
severe erosion.
To prevent tooth decay and gum disease, teeth
should be brushed 2 times a day with a fluoride
containing toothpaste, sugar consumption
should be checked and regular visits to the
dentist (every 6 months) should be routine.
Children’s teeth should be brushed by parents
until they are old enough to do it properly
themselves (at about 7 years of age).
Cleaning between the teeth with dental floss
or inter-dental brushes helps remove plaque and
food particles from places toothbrushes can’t
reach.
Flouride containing mouthwash may help
remineralise the enamel of teeth and antiseptic
mouthwash may reduce plaque forming bacteria.
Chlorhexidine containing mouthwashes are very
effective but over time, may stain the teeth and
blunt the taste buds.
Disclosing tablets may be used to identify the
presence of plaque. The tiny tablets are chewed
for about 30 seconds turning plaque bright pink.
Saliva production may be stimulated by
chewing sugar-free gum after a meal to neutralise
acid. Plaque forming bacteria may be suppressed
by the sweetener Xylitol used in some gums.
Refined sugar is the main culprit responsible
for tooth decay and it is advisable to control its
consumption. Natural sugars found in fruit,
vegetables and dairy are less likely to lead to
decay.
Alcohol and tobacco are bad for the teeth.
Smoking stains the teeth and increases the risk of
developing gum disease and tooth loss. Alcoholic
beverages and mixers used with them may
contain lots of sugar thus increasing the risk of
tooth decay. Alcohol consumption, smoking and
chewing tobacco are also associated with the
development of Mouth Cancer.
Regular dental check-ups help identify
problems in early stages so that they may be
tackled accordingly which will in turn help
prevent tooth loss. Scaling and Polishing at visits
help remove stains, plaque and tartar build-up. A
special scaling instrument is used to remove hard
to reach tartar and teeth are polished with a
rotary brush and abrasive paste to remove stains.
Fissures and deep crevices may be sealed with
a resin film to prevent plaque damage to the
enamel. These sealants may last several years but
brushing with a fluoride toothpaste and regular
dental checkups are still required.
The death of America’s Queen
She was age 76.
Franklin, reportedly died at her
Aretha Franklin, whose gospelrooted
WarrI fashIon Week deButs
Currently buzzing on instagram is the
forthcoming Warri Fashion And Style Week
(WFSW), organised by Arhecal Synergy
Limited, an events management outfit in
Lagos. The show which would be the first
of its kind to hold in Delta State, is aimed at
discovering and promoting emerging talents
in the fashion industry. For Carol Arhere,
Co-ordinator of the show, who posted details
on her Instagram page, she says the show
is designed to showcase Delta State’s
undiscovered fashion talents and bring them
to limelight.
According Arhere, “There are millions of
young designers that are yet to be discovered,
but they have a lot of creativity to show to the
world. WFSW is not only to discover them
and leave them all by themselves, they will
be empowered by way of attachment to
established designers in Warri and Lagos
for further training. This will help in preparing
them for bigger fashion shows in Nigeria
and beyond. The two- day event organised
in collaboration with Fashion Designers
Association Of Nigeria (FADAN), and billed
to hold in September, will begin with a master
class section where professionals in the
fashion industry in Nigeria and the UK will
speak on the business of fashion. It is an
opportunity for up-coming designers to be
part of this talent hunt show so as to live their
