urning questions for the London road fire station We put Some Sizzling questions to the City District Manager Andy Lindley who has been a fire fighter since 1990 and started in Derby, he had worked in other fire stations in Nottingham and Retford before settling at London Road fire station. He has been at London road station since September 2016 when the new fire station had been completed. Andy was very welcoming and shown our intrepid news reporters around his fire station. At the new fire station they have a call system that shows which fire crews are needed by coloured lights on the walls throughout the station, there are three engines two normal and one aerial ladder platform as well as the support vehicles. The fire station has a shift system in place there are four Watches, red, blue, green and white doing twelve hours 7-7am & pm doing a four day on and off. The fire crews stay awake for the full shift. We started off by asking Andy some questions we asked how many fire engines would attend the National Ice Centre if there is no event there would be two fire engines sent, if there 12
was an event on they would send four fire crews. If a major incident took place like a fire or chemical leak, London Road Station would send five and Andy would also attend. In addition we also asked Andy if they use special firefighting equipment, Andy said they do and one special equipment they use there is a piece called spreaders which will spread two parts of a car. They also have enough power in them to lift up the fire engine they also carry the Jaws of Life, which can cut a roof or a door off a car. Jeremy asked Andy what is the biggest cause of fires? Andy said the biggest causes of fire are electrical, and children playing with matches. Matthew asked, how much it cost to run the fire service? Andy said it costs 38 million a year. Joyce asked how you coped when the train station caught fire. Andy replied that he was the incident command officer for that incident, He was at home when the call came through at 6:25am by the time he got to the train station the fire crews was there. Michelle asked, how many firefighters do you have at the station? Andy replied there are 48 persons 12 per shift. 13
