The New Calliope

One jou rney end s and
another begins. Loo kin g
back thro ugh the past ten
years I have trul y been on
a jo urney. I neve r drea med
of serving on the board,
let alone beco min g President
for such a long time.
I reca ll the first tim e I sat
through a bo ard meeting. It
seemed like such a simp le
chore. Sit and Listen. As
I was listenin g I rea lized
I had so mu ch to say and
although COAI had come
a very long way, I kn ew
it could go farth er. Ju st as
I sit here today realizing
aga in that it is time to co n
tinu e growing and meetin g
the nee ds of ever changing
tim es. I often see resistance
to change. Ma ny are unco
mforta ble with change.
H oweve r, change is the corner
stone of grow th.
Speaki ng of change,
at this past conventi on
we tried the Lit e Auguste
co mp etition. Man y enjoye d
a new approac h but there
were many who disliked
it. Wh y? It was different
and that made them feel
uncomfo rtable. They were
afraid clow ns might forge t
the traditi ons behin d the
red nose. My thoughts are
we ca n pre serve the past
and meet the needs of the
futur e. There wa s a tim e
people were not rece ptive
to the Tramp character. As
they opened their mind s
they found there was a
place for the tramp in hi s
tory. Lite Auguste beca me
the discussion of the hour.
People tried it. Do we think
we' ll make change s to the
Lite Auguste? You bet! I
kn ow there will be some
super reco mm endations
for the next competition
and thu s influence those
who use it every day. Look
how far the whit eface and
auguste fac es have evolved
over the past ten year s !
Costu ming is at its all time
best. Wh y? We star ted
educ ating clowns throu gh
the magaz ine and com pe titions.
Peo ple were able to
raise the bar. They were
lookin g better and deve loping
their characte rs better.
Don't dismiss the Lite Auguste.
Se nd yo ur thoughts
and reco mm end ations to
anyone on the bo ard and
Cathy M ackey. Give us
your feedb ack. Your organization
ca n only meet
your nee ds if we know
what you 're aski ng for. As
a note: All of our compe titions
were we ll atte nded.
Wh ere do I see the
need for change? I wo uld
like to see COAI become
one of the lead ing educators
in performance skills.
Now that we
kn ow how to
dress like a clow n, do we
really know how to perform
like one ? I wo uld
like to see skit com petition
become so goo d that we fill
the room with people j ust
waiting to lear n new skit
skills. I would like to see
peo ple having fun with new
ideas and othe rs being cre
ative with traditi onal skits.
This year there were more
indiv idual skits at the competit
ion than I have see n in
a long time. Ha ts off to everyone
who put the mselves
on the line in fro nt of their
peers. If yo ur skit did not
w in this year, take it home,
rewo rk it and try it aga in
next yea r. Do n' t throw
away an original idea beca
use it needed a stronger
blow off or more development.
Develop wha t it takes
to mak e it a winner. Think
of the lear nin g expe rience.
Thin k of what it might
mea n to a beginn er to see a
seaso ned clow n work until
he/s he perfect s his/her skit
and passes it down to others
to use. The boar d had
fun wi th two traditi onal
skits; Stag e Coach and Banana
Bandana. We enjoye d
worki ng toget her. At the
next gathering of clow ns,
I suggest asking someone
to j oin yo u in a skit. Work
on it and then perform it
for others. A sk for suggestions
on how to improve it.
Rehear se it and come back
and try again. A growt h opportu
nity is j ust out there
waiti ng for you .
etc. I did not take my own
sound sys tem as a CD pla y
er was going to be pro vided.
I cho se to leave my set of
bell s behind - they took up
too much space and I didn 't
know enoug h Ru ssian song s
to make them worthw hile.
My costume was my
next conce rn. Do I take
along my shoes? Th ey take
up so much space. Do I
cruTy them on or entrust
them to the baggage handler
s? What about my wig;
is it nece ssary? One hat,
two hats or no hats, perhap s
I should ju st put funny ribbon
laundry is available and
it might be hot. Do I take
a backup nose ad hesive
in case my regular stuff
doe sn't get past security?
I based my deci sion on
what I was mo st comfortabl
e w ith as a clown. I had
to take my shoes; I love
those shoe s. I decided to
check the shoes. After all it
was a "mi ssion s" trip and
that 's all about fa ith - right?
I had to take my wig , my
favorite old standby one (I
threw in a few silly hair ribbon
s just in case) . Two hats,
my favorite two - they pack
small and I needed them
fo r a couple of my magic
tricks. Shirt s - I took three,
two long sleeved and one
short. I don 't usually weru·
a short sleeved shirt as a
clown , but I didn 't know
how hot it wou ld be so I
took one ju st in case. For
make-up I decid ed to take
the grease pencils which I
don 't usuall y use, but I was
trying to simplify. Fo r my
Aug uste make -up, I took the
"b lush" I use when weru·
ing my "lite " hospital face.
May/June 2006
I did take an extra adhesive
and an extra nose - they
pack small! The re was a
possibility that there may
not be water available for
clown clean-up so I took
co ld cream cloths and bab y
wipes.
The camp we went to
was about an hour out side
of Vologda. We trave led by
bus and by boat to get there.
We traveled with approximately
25 campers. Mo st of
these campers were orphans
who had been placed in
foster homes. At the camp
there was no running water.
All drinking water had to
be can-ied in or boiled (we
did have electr icity ). The
toilets were outhouses with
squat toilet s. Ther e were
no showe rs, but there was a
banya (a sort of sauna).
Onc e at the camp , after
meeting with our " Ru ssian"
team , it was decided that by
day I wo uld be a mild man
nered small group lead er
and at night jump into my
telephone booth and chan ge
into "Super Appl es" . The
camper s and leaders were in
a dorm , but the adult leader s
we re in a separate room and
I would be unsee n by campers
as the tran sformation
took place .
The even ing performance
s went well ; "Apple s"
was a hit! The kid s caught
the humor and see med to
understand the message.
The interpreter was great
fun. My "team " seemed
please d with what I added
to the camp .
Now here are the lessons
I learned after the first
evenin g.
Be flex ible! I knew
this go ing in, but it is so
true that I had to constantly
remind myse lf. Befor e arriving
at camp I didn ' t know
what kind of facilitie s there
would be or how long or
how often I was expected
to show up. I wa s told there
was a CD pla yer, and there
was, but it didn 't work. Also
unknown was how things
would be set up when going
to the orphana ges . The
first orph anage involved a
two hour bus trip and entertaining
the kid s outdoor s.
Fortunate ly I wore that
short-sl eeved shirt becau se
it was very warm. My stage
was the pavement , my table
an old metal folding chair.
So I began miming dragging
this chair to the spo t I
was to perform. I struggled
opening it up, trying to ham
it up as much as possible
when a tiny little gir l came
out of the audience and set
the cha ir up for me. After
that surpri se I strug gled to
lift my prop bag unto the
chair onl y to have another
tiny little girl co me out and
lift it for me with, of course,
the greatest of ease. I can't
tell you how funny the kid s
though t that was, and it was ,
comp letely unplann ed. After
the orp hanage and the two
hour bus trip back to town
we attended an art exhibit
for the Peace Fou ndati on.
I was in costum e for over
eleven very warm hours.
Being flex ible was a definite
mu st.
The next lesso n was
I had to slow down and
rememb er ther e was an
interpreter. I needed to use
the interpreter situation as a
part of the silline ss. Since I
had learned some Ru ssian,
I came out for the next performance
spea kin g Russian
and then expected her to
tran slate into English for me
- which mad e her laugh. I
wou ld exaggerate her presence
by looking at her with
my who le self . It got sillier
and sillier as I would tum to
her for translation and a lot
mor e fun. Timing is always
important in clowning, but
with an interpreter I had to
time when I would stop for
the tran slation to be made
interactive with me durin g
"performa nces".
Here is the biggest lesson
I learned, at least I hope
I've learned it. It's a bit emban·assing,
but true - I had
to change my focu s from
me to the children and the
reason we were there.
After the first evening's
show I was appreciated ,
thanked , and hugged. I
was a hit and I was proud.
I realized that maybe I had
been so consumed with performing
well, that perhap s
I hadn 't paid as much attention
as I should have to the
simple message of God' s
love. Thinking about it the
next day before the next
show I thought and prayed
about what that simple message
was and how would I
adapt my "show" to demonstrate
it. I decided to keep
the bits in that reinforced
the day 's teaching , but I
would emphasize God 's
love in all of it.
My noses found a purpose.
I have been giving
out noses for years. No ses
are what I do. I give them
out week ly at the hospital ,
at nursing homes, at fundraisers,
at birthday partie s; I
love giving out those noses.
But now my noses had a
special purpo se: to express
God' s love. I showed the
kids the round red foam
ball and told them how "it
rem inds me of God 's heart
(red) and how He loves me.
The ball is round wh ich
reminds me that His love is
eternal , alway s, never ending.
When you are very fortunate
and you're a clown"
(I put the foam ball "nose"
on my clown nose), "you
can look in the mirror ev-
May/June 2006
eryday and remember God 's
love. I want you to remem
ber God's love for you." I
then put a "nose" on each
one's nose.
When we visited orphanage
s in the area - my
"show times" were much
shorter, but I was able to use
the same illusions (and silly
gags) as at the camp, with
different patter. My emphasis
was still on God' s love,
so the change bag with the
many colored silks now became
"how are we all different?"
Have the kids put the
individual silks in. "Who
does God love? He loves
each and every one of us
even though we're all different."
Pull out the different
silks all tied together as one.
Of course the ending was
the giving of the "noses" as
a reminder of God 's love.
Thing s I would do differently
next time? Well I
would like to learn my maturing
lessons before I go. I
would take a portable sound
system - music would've
been fun. I would take
more short sleeved shirts. I
wouldn 't have taken the face
paints. Whether or not to
take balloon s is debatable.
I think at the orphanages
the balloon s may have been
more of a distraction once
they were brought out.
Everything in my bags
made it to Russia (& back)
so the extra adhesive and
nose were unnecessa ry and
if the adhesive wouldn 't
have made it I could'v e
made due with a ping pong
ball nose.
Would I go again? Definitely
and I would definitely
take noses ! •
The roar of laughter continues to ring in my ears! Laughter that started when the members of our COAi 2006 group skit
I entry walked on stage and continued throughout our performance. For our efforts we earned First Place in Group Skit at the COAi
Convention; how gratifying to be rewarded with that honor. Talented clowns , yes; but the props were the key items that set the
stage to success.
Peachey Keene, your propeller props gave us instant recognition; everyone knew what we were portraying the moment
we stepped on stage . And these props (pun intended) included everything you?d expect from a Peachey Keene creation ... they
were just plane (yes, another pun) FUNNY!
Peachey, thank you for sharing your time , talent and imagination. Thank you most of all for creating such wonderfu lly
creative comical props .
By Pat Roeser
Convention Director
I would like to thank all
the Crescent City Clowns
for their hard work to make
the 2006 COAI Convention
in New Orleans a journ ey to
remember. Thanks also to
all the convention attendees
who traveled from all parts
of the country to participate
in the chance of a lifetime.
The 217 registered attendees
may be the lowest number
of part icipants we have
ever had but they definitely
got their money's worth in
opportuniti es, competition s,
education , entertainm ent,
food , and camarade rie.
A big thank you to the
vendors and the many, many
lecturers. Without them
our convention would
not have been a success.
Success? Absolutely! Any
time you come away from
a confe rence having gained
knowledge and skins, it is a
success!
This year the COAI
Board had two very good
bids for the 2008 convention
site. Richmond, VA and
Indianapolis, IN were very
close in cost and amenities.
Board members affiliated
with these two alleys were
excused and did not vote. The
majorit y of Board members
voted for Richmond , VA. So
With the
2006 co nventio n
behind us, we can now
look forward to the 2007
convention in Sprin gfield,
Another convention
has co me and gone and
this one was without a
doubt one of the best!
With all the prob lems the
board encountered having
the convention in New
Orleans, it turned out to be
wonderful!
The first day of
convention, we met
in the afternoon and
after introductions, we
started with a make-up
demo nstration and talked
about what skits the jun iors
wanted to learn and did
some skit pract ice. The
second day was a "free"
day to attend classes with
their parents because there
was so much to participate
in. This was a VERY busy
day! Later that evening,
the convention participants
headed out to the Plantation
Tour, all decked out in the
period dress. I personally
enjoyed dressing up in
my blue "Be lle" dress and
toured the old plantation
house on the premises.
The jun ior joeys were all
having a good time dancing
to the DJ' s music after
having their box dinner.
Thursday the jun iors met
again for several classes
on magic tricks, learn ing
dance moves and pract icing
skits and dance . Friday
was another day of classes
including simple and
intermediate balloons , and
prop making. The props
were to be incorporated
into the Showcase and
Red Nose Competition on
Saturday. There was also
a class where Mardi Gras
Masks were made for the
Banquet. The juni ors had
fun creating their own
masks!
In the evening the
Cajun party happened with
wonderful Caju n food and
dancing.
Saturday, the juniors
were asked to come to the
last class of the convention
in their clown make-up and
costume. Ricky "Ttickste r"
Burns, a new member of
the Junior Joey committee,
helped lecture about
working with handicapped
peop le. He did a very nice
job teaching the juniors as
they listened intently.
On to the parade ,
Showcase and Red Nose
Competition ! The hotel
manage r was so helpfu l
durin g the convention and
although there were severa l
clow ns (including the
juniors and myself) who
had missed the last bus,
he drove us to the parade
route in Rivertown in his
nice air cond itioned van!
The day became very hot
and humid, but the ju niors
didn ' t let that stop them !
They can·ied one of their
props with them (their "Bee
Collectio n") for the parade
and became a hit with the
crowd! After the parade,
the j uniors went on stage
where they performed the
skits and dances they had
learned. At the same time
they were also crit iqued
for their individual
performances and also
in group performance.
As I watched the coaches
observe the children, I
could see the looks of awe
on their faces and I was
awe struck too! I always
enjoy working with the
children and this was a fun
time I will not soon forget!
Later that night, we
dressed up for the banquet
and after all the awards
were given out for the
regular compet itions, the
juni ors were given the
Red Nose Award for their
performances. After they
came up and receive d them,
the crowd gave them a
standing ovation ! I was so
proud of them myse lf. It
was a great time had by all!
I would like to thank
all the teachers who helped
teach the juni or jo eys.
Without all of you, there
would not be a Junior Joey
program. You all know who
you are.
Next year the
convention will be in
Springfield, MO. I hope to
see more of you there so
we can have fun and learn
too!
Thank you all, Junior
Joeys, for letting me
be a part of your clown
education! •
Thank You! Thank
You! Thank You!
Thank you to all those
who contributed books
to the New Orleans area
schools: you brought more
happiness to the teachers
and students then you
can even imagine. There
were smiles and tears of
gratitude as we unloaded
boxes of books at two
different locations. Most
of the books donated
through COAI went to the
Mary McLeod- Bethume
School in Orleans Parish.
Many of the teachers
there were living in
temporary housing due
to the total devastation
to their homes . Many are
not sure if they will ever
be able to rebuild their
homes but their dedication
is unbelievable. They
talked with us and were
so happy that we came to
visit. You would not know
by their actions what
they have experienced.
They are trying to move
on. The school they had
come from was totally
destroyed. Bethume is a
school that survived and
has combined two schools
to make one strong
learning institution. The
merging of two schools
and faculties has taken
a great deal of time and
patience. Many of the
students are living with
relatives and have been
through a devastating
ordeal. They are trying to
heal.
Bill Hart, the
Northea st Regional Vice
President, collected
many of the books
through Southwe st
Airlines and gave some
of the donation s to the
Red Nose Relief which
distiibuted them in
St.Bernard 's Parish. All
the distribution s were
done in "face" and were
generously received. The
children and staff shared
many happy moments and
the clowns walked away,
changed forever by the
experience.
If you would still like
to send books, COAi has
decided to keep the book
collection s going for as
The New Calliope

long as there is a need.
You may send your books
to me:
Cheri Venturi
19 Belle Helene Drive
Destrehan, LA 70047
or
PO Box 367
Destrehan, LA 70047
I promi se to distribute
them as they arrive. Since
I will be moving in the
near future , I will find
another COAI member
in the area who will be
happy to distribute them
or perhap s ju st give
addresses to the school s
and you can send them
directly.
Again , thank you to
all those who attended the
convention and brought
books and to all those who
could not attend but sent a
donation from their hearts,
your presence was felt.
Let's continue to make
a difference one book at a
time. •
PS. Just spoke to the
Principal of the Bethume
School and she said to
thank everyone for their
donations . She also said
that she has never seen
children get so excited
over books. "You would
have thought it was
Christmas around here.
Come back anytime."
Alleys and Members On The Move!
Red Nose Relief
by Barbara "Sparky" Bird
Clifton Park, NY
Operation s Coordinator for
Red Nose Relief
The activities of the
clowns around the country
who are Red Nose Relief
responde rs continue to come
to our attention. The members
have found numerou s
and crea tive ways to help
and support their local relief
agencie s. After any disaster,
the charities that rush to the
scene need long lasting restoration
of their funds and
their energies. Some COAi
clowns in Iowa sent this
story and photo.
"A group of the Red
Nose Relief clowns volunteered
by ringing the bell
for the Salvation Army. It
was so much fun. I sang all
the way through my 2-1/2
hours and kids would come
up and sing along with me
and put money in the red
bucket. In fact, there was a
school cho ir there that day
and so many of them contributed
, as well as lots of
parents with their children.
l think the clown outfits
really helped to bring in
the cash! The following
clowns put in 12-1 /2 hours
of volunteer ringing to help
the hurricane victims. Red
Cross surpassed their goal
of $500,000. They received
$649,000 ! We were glad we
could be a part of that.
Mary "Bubbles"
Wright, Deb "C lickette"
Cooper, Bonnie "Cotton
Candy" Ober, Vern "Ritze"
Adams, and Vicky ''Trixy"
Garrett all rang the bell."
Swan
Level: Intermediate
by David "Mr. Rainbow" Bartlett
Sw~ns are such elegant creat ures that make a lovely
centerp iece at a weddjng! Deljght a little girl at her birthday
party. Here, Mr. Rainbow shares his version.
Twist in the center.
j7
I
Inflate a third white 260
leaving about 2 inches
at the end. Make a small
bubble, followed by a small
loop.
A graceful swan.
Fold in half and twist. This
forms the body of the swan.
Attach to the body at the
end with the bubble ( this is
the tail).
Inflate a second white 260
and tie ends. Twist to make
a figure "eight". These are
the wings.
Bring the third balloon
along the bottom of the body
making a twist where the
neck will join.
Attach to the front of the
body by wrapping around
the front twist, bringing the
head up through the body.
By pulling down on the beak
you curve the neck into the
familiar swan like pose.
Skills - Face Painting
Cheek Art Can Be Fast and Great !
by Arla Albers
As the first place contender in cheek art at the COAI
convention in New Orleans, I thought I'd share with you
how I managed to paint a background as well as a scene in
under 3 minutes. It was with a triple loaded sponge for the
background .
Arla Albers' 1st place cheek art at this year's
COAi Convention in New Orleans. With a time limit of
three minutes it was a tough compet ition.
Ar la shares how she was able to create such an impressive
cheek art in the allotted time period .
By p re-plann ing you can create a paint palette ( shown left)
that can give you multiple colors with a single swipe of
your sponge (pictu red right).
To make a triple loaded sponge, cut your face paints
into strips and put them together, side by side, into one
container. (Make sure the container is not made of styrene
as this will negatively affect the paints.) Ensure that the
colors beside each other go together and when blended,
will not form either grey or brown. In other words, go from
the spectrum of Red, Oran ge, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo,
Violet. Do not put orange and blue beside each other. They
will turn a muddy color. Orange, yellow, and blue would
look grea t together because the orange and yellow mixed
form a nice color. The yellow and blue together form green,
so you are safe. In fact, mine was orange, pink, and yellow
for the backgrou nd that I did for the palm tree scene.
I did the palm trees with a medium round brush loaded
with medium brown, pushing harder at the trunks of the
trees, then letting up on the pressure as I went up the trunk
in a curved motion. For the leaves, I used a brush that looks
like it was cut at an angle loaded with dark green. It makes
great palm tree leaves by swiping in a curved motion. I also
did the sand on the beach with a brown sponged swipe, then
overlapped with a bright yellow stipple sponge touched to
the brown several times. A few birds in the sky with a fine
black liner brush, and I was finished.
Also, a hint when doing cheek art to make it look
100 % better. Lay down a 5 second sponged area before
painting the cheek art design over the top. It makes all the
difference. Try it. Do a design on your arm without the
backgro und, then add the sponged one color backgro und
(or use the triple loaded sponge for a real WOW), and then
paint the exact same design. You' ll find that the one with
the backgound looks 100% better, even though the two are
identical otherwise.
Happy p ainting!
Clueless about clowning?
You are not alone. About 40% of our campers are
"baby clowns": they have never put on make-up,
they want to be a clown. Hey, we can work with
Membership Growth •
6,000 by
Dece mber 31. 2006
by Paul Kleinberger
Executive Vice President
One thou sand and thirty
one ... by our calculation s,
based on the Business
Manager 's recent report to
the COAi Board , is how
many new members we
need to bring in to COAI by
December 31 to reach our
goal of 6,000 members by
the end of 2006.
I was asked recently
why COAI has placed
a premium on boost ing
its membership to 6,000
member s.
There is a new phra se
that has come to light on the
business and not-for-profit
scene in recent months. The
phrase is "Small Giant ".
It refers to organizations
who choose to be GREAT
instead of big. COAi is
the largest clown arts
membership orga nization
out there because we
are great! And like all
of the other clown a1ts
oroanization
I:>
s out there , our
total member ship numbers
have been declining
over the last few years.
Retirements, intere st shift s,
priority changes, changes
in family life .. . there seems
to be many reaso ns for the
decline in membership
numbers. At the same time ,
COAi members are telling
us they want more ... more
support, more oppor tuniti es,
more services. Tho se
resources can be had, but,
must be support ed by
membership dues . Plus,
May/June 2006
our costs are
increa sing. No n
profit management gurus
are telling us that our costs
could increase as much as
18% over the next couple
of years . The leade rship
of COAi has worked
hard to keep expe nses in
check and to make sure
that we operate within the
para meters of our budget.
The simple fact is, to avoid
a dues increase, cover
our costs and provide the
more service and support
our COAI membership is
demanding, we need more
members.
As a group, we
are a Small Giant. Our
emph asis has always been
on foste ring all of the
elements of greatness.
How ever, small giants deal
with and manage certain
limit ation s. Our primary
source of revenue is dues
revenue. Thus , our financial
limitation s are dii-ectly
related to our membership
numb ers. Six thou sand
by the end of 2006 will
I:>
oive COAI some financial
flexibility it doesn ' t
currently have.
So grab a few
membership app lication
form s, find some clowns
who are not member s of
COA i and recruit them.
As Cheri has said, if every
member bring s in just one
member this year, we could
double our membership .
Our benefit s are many. They
begged to be shared with
everyone who is a clown or
who has an interest in our
performin g art. •
Membership
Drive
We are well on our way
working to increase our
membership thus
offering our organization
so many fabulous
opportunities .
At the end of April
we had 5,061 Members!!
Congratulations!
Let's keep them rolling.
CHARLIE
Award Kudos
by Bob "Bunky" Gretton
Chairman, International Clown Week
Clowns fou nd many new ways
to celebrate Clown Week 2005, from
doing Nose Transp lants at an ER to
riding all day on a subway. We set
a record on the number of proclamation
s received from all levels of
government. A ll entrants will receive
certificates of apprec iation.
Alley scrapbook s for the Char lie
Award were submitted by: Big Sky
KJown Alley #284, Billing s, MT;
Ca loosa Alley #97, N. Ft. Myers ,
FL; Electric City Alley #285, Loudonsville,
NY; Clowns Like Us Alley
#303 , Englewood, FL; and Jub ilee
Jesters Alley #339, Virginia Beach ,
VA.
Individual s who sent in scrapbook
s for the Charlie Award included:
Barbara "Sweet Thang " Cox, from
Richmond , VA; Theresa "Fra nee"
Francois, from Queens Village, NY;
Kat hy "Piccolo " Keaton, from San
Angelo, TX; Carl "Bunkers" Mower s
City, PA; Kent " Ka-Yo"
Sheets from N. Ft. Myer s, FL; and
John "Splash " Sullivan , from Pottsville,
PA.
I am proud to announce that the
winning alley of the 2005 Charlie
Award is Big Sky KJown AJley #284,
Billings, MT; and the Individual winner
is Barbara "Sweet Than g" Cox
from Richm ond,VA.
I have never seen an effort like
Big Sky. They set a very high precedent.
This small alley of only 12
member s performed at 44 events during
the week. Big Sky sent out a ton
of letters and in return received 17
proclamations. They spread the word
about Clown Week with spots on two
TV station s, KSVI and KHMT along
with several spots on three radio stations.
Their scra pbook was filled with
newspaper stories, many Thank You
The Charlie Award Entries and many proclamations were
on display at the Convention in New Orleans.
letters from their community and
place s they perfor med during Clown
Week. Their scrapbook was very
origina l. The book itself was made of
wood and pictures of alley member s
were etched into the front cover. The
CHARLIE Award committee was
told before their review not to j udge a
book by its cove r!!! Although the cover
was quite impres sive, the story did
not stop at the openi ng of the book.
Two other alleys showed wonderful
contributions as well. The COAI
board awarded them plaque s in recog
nition of their outstanding dedication.
Those alleys are Clowns Like Us Alley
#303, Englewood, FL, and Jubil ee
Jesters Alley #339 , Virginia Beach ,
VA.
Barbara "Swee t Thang " Cox,
from Richmond, VA, also promoted
Clown Week in splendid style. Looking
at her scrapbook , she kept busy
every day of the week. She also included
many proclamation s and letters
from governmenta l dignitarie s
with scores of pictures. Interestingly,
her husband , Mike , preceded her as
the Individua l winner in 2004.
I thank member s of the Kapito l
Klown s, Alley #6 , for taking the time
to critique the Char lie Award scrap -
book s. They were very impre ssed
with the effort, interest, and enthu siasm
that each entrant showed. I was
also very happ y to receive pictur es
and proclamation s from many alleys
and individu als who did not submit
scrapbook s; I displayed all of them at
the convention.
Have you and your alley started
planning events for Clown Week,
2006? Check past New Calliopes for
articles to assist in early plannin g.
Bonita "Bon Bon " Love gave some
excellent ideas last year. If you are
competing for the CHARLIE Award,
reme mber that your scrapbook should
conta in proclamatio ns, picture s taken
at each event with some indication
of Clown Week , any media coverage ,
a roster (if an alley) and thank you
notes. You may refer to the COAI
website (www.coai.org). Amp le time
is given after Clown Week to organize,
arrange, and create scrap books.
They are due in by the postma rked
date of October 1st.
Once again, I ask everyone to
send any pictures and proc lamat ions
that you acquire during 2006 Clown
Week. I will display them at the 2007
Convent ion in Springfie ld. •
Last Walk-Arounds
Let 's take a few moments to remember our f ellow jo eys who have left our presence, but not our
hearts ...
Ernie John aka Ruffles
On March 19, my beloved "Ruffle s" died in Lemon Grove , San Diego, encircl ed by his
family. He was a very young man of 90 year s who left behind not only his wife of 65 year s,
Fran, four children, grandchildr en and great grandchildren - he also left behind his clown
family and the many heart s he touched along the path of his life . Ruffles joined the Al Bahr
Shrine in 1965 and settled into the Clown Unit. His name came from the beautiful and
elaborate Elizabethan-style collar that Fran hand sewed for him. He clowned not only in
San Diego, but also around the world - from Japan to London and across the United States.
He gave great joy to the many people he met on his way through life. He visited hospitals, burn centers,
numerous fund raising events, and took part in many parades. Each time was like the first, he always
attained great satisfaction. The Shriner's Hospital for Crippled Children , the Sneaker Fund for burned
and crippled children, the International Shrine Clown Association, the Scottish Rite Program for Aphasic
children , the Polinsky Center and the Viet-Nam Veterans of San Diego are among the many organizations
that are grateful for Ernie John/Ruffles volunteer work. Any organization that helped children, especially
those in need , touched his heart and benefited not only from his clowning but also from his generosity. He
was a quiet man who gave straight from his heart. Ernie John enjoyed the art of clowning until the end of
his life. It was a passion of his to give to those who did not have - be it a smile, a hug, his time. He was
a self made man who made it his aim to follow William Penn 's statement: "If there is any kindness I can
show, or any good thing I can do to any fellow being, Jet me do it now, and not deter or neglect it, for I
shall not pas s this way again."
- By Tango aka Leah Estrin
Brian "Sparkles" Rowe
Brian Rowe pas sed away on March 19 at the age of 62. He had a long battle with cancer, but never
gave up hope. Aside from being a caring clown, he did just about everything else. He didn 't know the
word, "no."
He is going to be missed by both young and old as he touched many a heart including mine.
- In loving memory .from Jean "Snippers" Rowe.
Janet "Winnie"
Janet "Winnie " (not the Pooh) lost her battle to leukemia on April 7. Winnie was a dedicated active
member of Tri River s Clown in Pugh and served as our Booking Director. She always gave 110% to any
project she was involved in. Within the past year her clowning evolved tremendously from her mus ical
concerto , to with a mini violin, to entertaining at Senior Facilities as Mrs. Claus with her naughty and nice
lists. Winnie truly made a dent in this world making it a better place. She will be truly missed by all that
knew and loved her. I hope someday to see her down the road to once again bump a nose. "Winnie you
did well with your gift of clowning."
- Julie "Julz" Thompson"
Mary "Ms. Bear" Maddux
Mary was a founding member of Alley 362 and loved clowning at the Springfield MO area hospital
pediau·ic wards. Mary was a driving force within alley 362 and was key in gearing up for winning bid for
the upcoming 2007 COAi Convention. Mary lost her battle with cancer in late February. Before passing
away, Mary requested her funeral to be conducted by clowns , and so it was with Alley 362's President
and VP, Dennis "Chester" Rayon and Pastor J. "Fishbucket " Phillips conducting the honors with a grave
side eulogy and balloon release. On an interesting note , unknown to her fellow alley joeys , Mary was also
a clown in her early years working the local birthday party circuit long before there was a COAi to hang
your hat on. To have known Mary was to know a great and loving person who was half rose petal and half
snapping-turtle , and we loved her ju st the way she was. This isn't good-bye but see you later. Bump a
nose, Ms. Bear.
