The New Calliope

It see ms almost impossible
that my term as President
is almost over. The journ ey
has been unbelievab le. I am
leav ing the position with a
feel ing of accomp lishment
and awe. There is so much
room to continue growing. I
know the new board will acce
pt the challenges without
hesitation. I would be remiss
at this time ifl did not remind
everyo ne to vote in the co m
ing electio n. Even though
you think your vote may not
have impa ct, due to only one
person runnin g in your reg ion,
it does have an impact. It is
an indication that you care
enough about the organization
to vote and be heard. As yo u
know, I will stilJ be serving on
the board as past president.
I would like to thank all
the members of COAi for giving
me the privilege of serving
for the past six years Thank
yo u for all your support and
encourage ment. I have enjoy
ed hear ing from you during
my travels as well as via
email. I hope to continue to
hear all of your new ideas,
concerns and suggestio ns.
Your voices are what makes
this organization the very best
that it can be. As past president,
I will also be helping out
in all areas that need an extra
hand. (You really didn 't think
I would be riding off into the
sunset, did you?)
I want to thank all the
board s who I have had the
honor of working with during
my last three terms in
office. It is not always easy to
volunteer for a position and
then make it grow as you are
serving. Balan cing life and a
commitment to an organization
this big is a challenge
no matter who you are. The
past boards have given of
their time and energy without
quest ioning for the good of
COAI. I will leave my office
proud and humbled by their
dedica tion and love for the art
of clow ning. This dedication
and foresig ht to envision beyond
the obvio us, to have the
ability to remain current and
to proj ect the futur e needs of
an entire memb ership , is a gift
that eac h board member has
given to make COAI a successful
organizat ion.
I would also like to thank
my friend s and fami ly for seeing
me through many projects
and hair-pulling situation s. I
truly say that with love and
affection for the position.
Judy Quest, the immediate
past president, used to say "At
time s being the president of
COAi is like trying to herd
cats." With so many creative
and talented people involved,
it does have its challenging
day s. I tried to lead with
compassio n and enthu siasm.
My family and friends never
allowed me to lose sight of
the vision. They were all real
tro upers.
Throu gh all of my years,
this one has been the most
challenging. In fact , I don 't
think I cou ld write a fiction
story that could outdo my
true-life adventures in the past
10 months. Personally, we
have evacuated for hurri canes
three times, and tornadoes
twice. My husband Rick had
a hip replacement in San Antonio
and got a new job which
will entail moving from our
recently renovat ed house in
the New Orle ans area to St.
Loui s, Missou ri. In May we
hope to be moving to the St.
Loui s Ram s where he will be
coachi ng the linebacker s, and
be the assistant head coach.
Thank goodness there are
so many wonderful and fun
clown s in that area. Ma ny lifealtering
situations have presented
themselves but the best
of everything has been the
character s I have encount ered
on the jo urney. Thank goodness
for clowning, because it
gave me the license to see humor
in all the characte rs that
I encountered. In
fact, Cherri-Oats
may have aged a
bit during this time. Her vocabular
y and expe riences sure
have made her a more precocio
us and outspoken child.
She can now do a funny takeoff
on FEMA from a child's
point of view. She think s
houses are now built with
trailers in the front yard and
groce ry stores only carry one
brand of everyth ing. She also
think s that everyone has suitcases
ready to put in the car
and vacat ions at anoth er hotel
for a week at a time. Although
it has been a time of serio us
thinki ng, one does walk away
with a smile that shows with
hope and faith a new day is
right arou nd the corner. The
people and character s who I
have met durin g this past I 0
mon ths (as well as the past
eight years) will stay in my
heart and mind forever. You
may also get to meet them as
I develop their personalities
in routines and skits. I look
forward to going back to performi
ng more and traveling
less . I also need to have my
character in clownin g grow
and meet the challenges of a
fast-mov ing life , as we alway s
need to keep our eyes and ears
open for new paths.
Thank you Again,
Cher i
PS. I do not want you to
think that I am minimi zing
the tragedy of the peopl e in
New Orleans but I want you
to kn.ow that they are from a
history of survivors and they
have always been able to see
happiness and comedy no
matter what the disaste1: This
wonderful gift will prove to be
their salvation. Knowing and
loving them and the surrounding
area has given me a new
perspective on life. •
Known for his
infectiou s humor and
mischievous smile, Steve
"Peac hey Keene" Long
has long been renowned
for his produ ction of
exce ption al quality foam
props. In addition, he is a
much sought after fam ily
entertai ner and performance
educato r/lecturer.
Pb\CIIIT IS Kf[Nf ON STILT
For over a decade ,
he has been reachi ng
new heights in clown
entertainme nt. Peachey
is not only a prop mak er
extraordinaire; he is an
acco mpli shed stilt walker
and instructor.
In a recent interview,
Steve (along with Peach ey
Keene (PK)) offered the
follow ing insight into being
head and shoulders above
the crow ds:
Q: How long have you
been stilt walk ing?
PK: Since the first day
I started .
Steve : I rea lly don't
know - mayb e ten or twelve
years.
Q: How did you get
star ted ? Why did you
pick stilt walking as a
performance venue?
PK: I got on a pair of
stilts. Because I wanted to.
Steve: At first I thoug ht
it would be fun. It was and
afte r a lot of practice I felt
that I was ready to entertain
on stilts and it all j ust fell
(pun intended) into place.
Q: What types of
cha racters do yo u do and
for what types of venues do
yo u perform?
PK: Tall characters
and high venues.
Steve: I have a few
characters; clow n, cow boy,
clown pirate, spaceman
and ringma ster. I perform
at parades, grand openi ngs,
pic nics and any function
where the customer wants
a highly visible presence.
I mostly do meet and greet
but, on occas ion, balloon s.
Q: What do you think is
the appeal of a stilt walker?
Do you think its novelty
adds to the entertainment
value?
Steve: Yes I do. That is
a large part of it, anythin g
different is going to be
noticed. Odditie s are always
appea ling to the public and
standing nearly ten feet
in the air is usually pretty
odd. Mo st kids find that out
early on, if they want to be
noticed ju st do someth ing
different. Th at has to
explain pink punk hairdos .
Q: Do you seem to be
better received as a stilt
walker or a clown?
Steve: That is hard to
answer. It depends on where
the event is. Maybe I do not
see such a big difference
because as I said before I
am already taller than most
people.
Q: How difficult it is to
learn to walk on stilts?
PK: Very.
Steve: Learnin g to
walk stilt s is differ ent for
everyone. Depe nding on
your natural balance it may
be easy or difficult. Always
reme mber to keep your feet
at least shoulde r width apart
and don 't look at your feet.
Pick a spot out in front of
you on which to focus .
Q: Do you need to learn
on a shorter height and then
work upward?
Steve: I did not; the
stilt s I started with were not
adj ustable so I was stuck
with what I had. Many of
the stilts available today
are adjusta ble so it would
The New Calliope

e good to start low, gain
co nfidenc e and experience
then work your way up.
Q: Do you own more
than one pair of stilts ?
Steve: Yes, I have two
pair; the fore mentioned
Bigfoot and a back-up pair
of S2s.
Q: Do yo u have a
favorite type or style? How
comfo rtable are stilts to
wear?
Steve: The stilts I
use are called "Bigfoot
stilts" they are not as
unco mfortable as they
look. There is a new style
on the market now called
"S2". They are a lot bette r
than normal drywall stilts.
On the comfo rt issue, after
a couple of hours you
definitel y know where the
sore muscles are.
Q: Most would consider
you a tall individual without
stilts. How tall are you with
and without your stilts?
PK: I am normally 6'
6" and abnormally I am
5' 18". With stilts much
taller.
Steve: I am normally
6'6" . Both pairs of my stilts
are 2 feet hig h which puts
the top of my bead at 8'6". I
think that the fact that I am
6' 6" tall off of them does
make my body look a little
more proportion ed.
Q: Where do you get
you r cost umes? What type
off abric is used to minimi ze
weight?
PK: I buy them.
Steve: I get my
costumes from 'the known '
clown cos tume suppliers .
I do not use lightwe ight
fabrics, I think that a heavier
we ight hang s better and
gives you a bette r look.
Always line your pants to
give them better drape.
Q: What material do
most manufactures use to
make stilts?
Steve: Stilts can be
made of wood but for
performin g aluminum or
magne sium are most often
used.
Q: Once yo u put on the
stilts, how do you get into a
standi ng position?
PK: One foot at a
time. Tennis shoes are
bolted to the foot pad and,
so I can tell my right from
my left, I have a big "R"
and an "L" stenciled on
the tops of the shoes.
Steve: If you are
as tall as I am, you can
"free mount" them. Free
mountin g mean s putting
one foot in the stiITup and
standing on one leg while
you put on the other stilt.
Most people however use a
small ladder that they can sit
on while putting both stilts a little bigger.
on.
Q: Is there a safe way
Q: How do you to fall?
dismount from stilts?
PK: Don't hit the
PK: CarefulJy. ground .
Steve: It is actually ju st Steve: If you fall
the oppo site of getting on forward or to the side try to
them.
roll with it when you hit the
ground. Do not land on your
Q: What health/safety hands with a stiff arm to
issues need to he cons idered break the fall. All you will
when walking on stilts? break is your wrist or arm.
PK: Nose bleeds. If you fall backward, try to
Steve : First and
bend at the waist so you roll
foremost are your legs. Your and tuck your chin as close
knee s take a lot of stress as to your chest as possible
do your upper thigh s. If you so that you don 't strike the
There Are Some Really Big Shoes To
Fill In This Year's COAi Election!
Pages
VOTE
By Paul Kleinberger
To have you r say in the
doings of COAI, VOTE this
spring!
Having your say is one
of the cornerstones that
COAI was founded on over
COAi is a members hip
group. It's your
membership group. Eac h
member is enco uraged to
get involved. Eac h memb er
has the right to expre ss
their opinion abo ut what
COAi does.
In order to express that
opin ion, you must vote in
business meetings and in
the bienni al electio ns. If
you opt not to vote, you
technically relinqui sh any
grounds to co mplain if the
leadership marches off in a
direction you are not happy
with.
Inside of COAI, you
have severa l avenues
to communi cate your
co ncerns. You can talk with
your regional ambas sadors .
You can talk with your
regional vice presidents.
You can talk to the
director s of membership ,
convent ions, education and
alley/reg ion support. You
can talk with any one of our
office rs.
All of these peop le
have e-mail addresses and
telephones, are regul arly
out among the memb ership
and are willing to listen.
You can attend the annual
meeting. You have to take
the initi ative to speak up.
You need to initiate the
co nversat ion. You need to
raise your hand.
When asked, you
need to vote. It is the most
dynamic way to express
your oprn 1on.
Beyond direct
communi catio n with the
folks currently serving
COAl , you have the
opportuni ty to draft a
letter to the editor of The
New Calliope . As you
look through the most
recent issues of The New
Calliope, you will see
that Pat New ton, our
ed itor, is asking for your
partic ipation on several
fron ts.
The e-alley is open
to any member of COAi
who is in good standing.
It has proven to be a great
forum for member s to
expre ss their opinions, offe r
ideas and exc hange both
organ izational and clow n
arts information.
And then there is the
COA i web site. On the site
there is an option called
"Ask Us". You send in a
question , and you get an
answer in return.
There are many optio ns
to communi cate with
COAI , its leader ship and its
staff. COAI even provides
a toll free numb er. You
can pick up the phone and
dial the COAI business
office any time it' s is
open. Shirley Long will
make sure your question s
are answered and that
any concern you have is
prop erly addressed.
The New Calliope

Th is year's election
cycle features 23 COAI
member s who have stepped
forward and exp ressed
their desire to serve you,
the membership. They are
asking for your VOTE.
Your VOTE is precious. It
means a lot. We want you
to cast your vote for the
office rs, director s and yo ur
regiona l vice president
who you fee l will do the
best job for you. Save this
When your ballot arrives
SECRETARY
1 Candidate
The Candidates
Teresa "Blinky " Gretton
Once again, it is election
time for all COAi joeys.
I am so
proud to
be a part of
this great
organization
and
am grateful
for your .__.,_ ___ --J
support
over the past decade of service
as Secretary. I again
ask for your vote to serve as
your secretarial voice.
I have had the wonderful
experience of working
with five boards, all bringing
personal expertise and topnotch
clowning to the board
table.
I have more to brino e, to
the boardroo m as well as to
the membership. The secretarial
position (which includes
constructing minutes,
motions, and action items
as well as keeping records)
is quite diverse. Aside from
paperwork, I have acted as
an ambassadress. I have
been very fortun ate to meet
great people - YOU! I have
learned tremendously from
these experiences and have
tried to share as much with
others.
I have had the pleasure
of role-playing "Bl inky"
in an ageless fantasy world
for over 26 years . I so enjoy
performing with my clown
partner, "Bunky" (my hubby
in real life) and I relish every
moment in spreading miles
of smiles to children of all
ages.
I am also excited about
the mentoring program and
the j unior joey progra m. I
will continue to actively assist
in these important programs
so they can achieve
greater accomp lishments.
Mentoring and sharing with
each other will encourage
our art form . Need less to
say, our juni or joeys are our
future. They will keep the
lifeline of clowning alive.
1 Candidate
Connie "Mizz Klown"
Kennedy
"So ... you want to be a
clown ?" I've heard master
Clown Glen "Frosty" Little
sing that little song on more
than one occasion. So, I
never would have dreamed
that it would be possible
Me?- A clown?
I first became intere sted
in clowning when I met
Ed Brichell ("Ho-Ho the
March/April 2006
clown")
of Oklahom
a City
back in
1982. The
memorie s
of watching
this Connie Kennedy
statewide
celebrity took me back to
my own childhood. It was
a pivotal moment in my
life that would lead me to
discove r this so-ca lled "passion"
we call clowning.
So, ten years later, after
attending a two-week course
on clowning offered at Central
Presbyterian Church in
Shawnee , OK my journey
began. I joined severa l local
alley s in Oklahoma City,
learning as much as I possibly
could.
Then , in 1999, I was
introduced to Pricilla
Mooseburger (aka Tricia
Bothun) , Glen "Fros ty"
Little, Dave Mitchell, Cheri
Venturi, and Rex No lan . My
life, as they say, has never
been the same. The technical
skill s that I learn ed from
each of them took me to a
new, higher level and it also
taught me that as long as
you are coacha ble , you can
be teachable, and the sky is
the limit.
Now that you know a
little about me, I'm officially
declarin g my candidacy
for Regional Vice President
of the North Central Region.
I have been a COAi Ambassador
to Oklahoma for the
past three years. Thank you
VICE PRESIDENT
Hazel "Gertie" Ovanin
I am cu1Tently Midwest
Regional Vice President.
During my
term in office
I have
had the opportunity
to meet
a lot of
our members.
As Hazel Ovanin
Midwest
Regional VP I have seen a
lot of changes to benefit our
members. I am seeking the
position for another term in
hopes of making a difference
in changes to come.
I became a clown in
1997. I have been told by
many that I clown from
the heart. I know that all
clowns have the ability to
make a difference if only for
one person. I am a medical
professional and have seen
that clowning gives people
smiles and lightens the load
if even for a few minutes.
What a gift the art of clowning
is. I take my clowning
and the art of clowning seriously.
SOUTHWEST
REGIONAL VICE
PRESIDENT
1 Candidat e
Candy Will
Hello Southwest members
! It seems like yesterday
when I first took office as
your regional vice president.
It has been a very busy
two years and there is one
import ant thing I have
learned durin g this last term.
I missed one board meeting
and realized
that
when even
one meeting
is not
attended
whatever
the reaso n,
Candy Will
there is a
lot of missed information.
I decided when I attended
the next meeting, I would
do everything in my power
to attend all board meetings
from that point on. As an of-
Meet The Candidates
ficer of COAI, it is important
to keep up with all that goes
on in the organizat ion. This
information is important
for our membe rs. To be approac
hed by a member and
asked about COAi, having
the answe rs should be an
officer's utmost priority.
The regional vice president,
along with the regio nal
ambassadors, are here to
make sure the membership
in our regio n is kept
informed of any changes
or new things going on in
COAL As a member of
COAi myself, I appreciate
being kept up on all that
goes on in COAL I try to
listen to members' concerns,
and bring them to the board
whenever a membe r needs
me to do so.
II
I
£
Thank you for allowing
me to be you VP and if
elected again I will continue
to do my best in keeping
membership up on all that
goes on.
I've dabbled in acting
As a member of COAi
since 1993, I held the positions
of secretary and president
of Thunder Bay Alley
club for a number of years.
I served a two-year term in
1998-99 as Canadian Regional
COAi Board of Directors
and found it to be both exciting
and challenging. I would
again be proud to serve in
Since joinin g COAi and
serving on the board , I've
witnessed many positive and
Fellow Canadian joey s,
I seek your support to represent
you as regional vice
In 1997, I chose to follow
It took me
a while to
get dressed
and get
my feet
now I take Bridg et White
every opportunity possible
to entertain and volunteer, to
educated. Presently I am
the president of Thunder
For the previous four years
I participated as secretary. I
have attended the past three
June 2005, Clown Fun Days
in Calgary 2001 , and Slap
Regional Vice President.
International-Japan
1 Candidate
Rick "Jelly Bean"
Danielson
I want to be your Regional
Vice President, International
Vice President.
Before I ask for your vote,
let me share some personal
information. I came to Okinawa,
Japan in 1975 courtesy
of the US Air Force.
I've since made this beautiful
island my home. As life
would have it, I left the Air
Force in 1983; been blessed
with a lovely wife (30 years
together ), two chiJdren, a
daughter in-law, and a wiry
(but quick) four year old
grandson.
I began clowning in
1985 - visiting hospitals,
home s,o rphanages, and
schools for the gifted,
which I continue to do. As
the foundin g force behind
Kokasai (Int']) Clowns of
Japan (COAI #368), I personally
sponso red 17 out of
19 members in COAI. I continue
my clown education
and am
now working
with
many experienced
clowns and
caregivers
to organize Rick Danielson
the first
caring clown unit in Okinawa.
I was appointed your
Pacific Rim Ambassador in
2004 and am the Pac Rim
Relief. At the 2005 fall session,
our board of directors
to continue to work
for you in this capacity.
My goal as your representative
for your trust and confidence
and for the opportunity to
Hand Corsage
Level: Beginner/
by Karen Bell
Partially inflate a 260.
Each petal of the flower
is made by making two
bubbles ...
Inflate a small bubble
in another 260 of
contrasting color.
Place in the center of the
petals and attach on either
side. This makes the center
of the flower.
In getting ready for
spring you can turn to
creating beautiful flowers
with your balloons.
This "hand corsage"
is demonstrated by Karen
Bell who is the Director
of Outreach Programs for
Circus Sarasota. She finds
this a nice balloon since
it's easy to carry around
during any event. She does
remind anyone working at
nursing homes or in hospital
environments to always
check about introducing
latex products to the
residents and/or patients.
... and completing with an
ear twist.
Secure using remainder of
balloon as the wrist band.
Continue same for
second petal.
Two bubbles and an eartwist
each make three more petals
compl eting the petal part.
Cut and tie off the
remaining balloon piece.
Skills - Face Painting
Roses
Level: Beginner/Intermediate
by Pat Newton
Roses are such beautiful flowers and can be
intimidating to paint - until I saw Lynne's Jamieson's
beautiful roses demonstrated on the Internet. She has taken
this popular posy and made it a quick, pretty and elegant
face painting element.
Don't worry about the strokes being exact. If you
compare Lynne's to mine, you will see a slightly different
approach to building the petal s.
Thanks to Lynne for giving us permission to share her
process. Check out her website at www.facemagic.com.au
to see her beautiful work.
(Note: Lynne is a well-known face painting artist from
Australia.)
This is a design I often paint on my own face when doing
festivals. Apply some color with a sponge, add swirls and
tear drops in black and white. A single rose on the forehead
adds an additional elegance. Note that I have added some
extra red to the rose for more depth to the petals.
Start with pink and literally
make a fingerprint . !found
using either my middle or
pointer finger made the
nicest shape. Using a small
round brush and white make
some sweeping strokes.
Continue adding white
strokes to complete the
shape of the rose.
Gather three roses together, add a fews swirls
and you have a beautiful cheek art that can be
done in less that 2 minutes.
March/April 2006
Finish off by double loading with dark green and yellow
and place some leaves around the rose. A few white dots
add a finishing touch.
This is a "Before and After" picture showing the difference
after being heated. The bottle bottoms will shrink and the
cut edges will become smooth. This creates the basic flower.
Allow the flowers to cool prior to decoratoring.
Wash the empty bottles in soapy bleach water to
kill any bacteria. Allow them to dry.
Cut the bottom third off the bottle.
Pre-heat an electric fry pan to 350 degrees
( If using a pan that will be reused for food, cover su1face
with aluminum foil) Place the bottle bottoms OPEN END
To create stems, hot glue bamboo sticks to the back of
flowers. To create an ornament or necklace, add ribbon
to the back instead of a stick. Allow the hot glue to
cool and harden before handling. The flowers can be
decorated with permanent markers, scraps of fabric,
Alley 44 Girl Scout Workshop
Offers The Fine
Points Of Clowning
By J. L. Thorn ell
At a workshop in early
February, ten members of
Girl Scout Troop 464 in Kalamazoo,
Michigan, learned
their first lessons in the serious
business of clowning.
All scouts were fourth-graders
in the Kalamazoo Public
School's Washington Writers'
Academy.
The three-hour workshop
was offered by the
Grand And Glorious
Mid-Michigan Galaxy of
Clowns, Southwest Michigan
Alley 44 of the Clowns
of America, which has been
actively involved for the last
three years in training new
clowns via the scout workshops,
in community education
classes, and at church
youth program s.
Donna "M. T. Pockets"
Wilinski, a 16-year
veteran clown, coordinated
and directed the workshop
with the assistance of three
clowns who all graduated
from one of the eight-week
clown workshops Alley 44
has offered, for the last three
years, through the Kalamazoo
Public Schools' community
education program .
Ada "Giddy Up" Feldman
and Jeri "Suzy Sunshine"
Myers were both
graduates of Alley 44's first
community education clown
class in 2003 and Linda
"Starla" Black graduated
from the second class in
2004. They shared stories,
demonstrated skits, and
presented the scouts with
a booklet with ideas for
clowning.
The mostly nine-yearold
scouts learned about
clown types and clown
ethics as well as selecting
names, creating costumes,
experimenting with greasepaint,
and performing short
skits.
After wearing her clown
Introducing the Meshugge
Nuts COAi Alley #393
by Scott "Scooter J.C.
Spots" Robins
As a Jewish Clown,
I always wondered why
Christian Clowns seemed to
have the only voice in clown
ministry. I have always
respected what the various
Christian clown organizations
have accomplished
and I have gained a lot of
ideas from Christian clown
activities. In January, 2006
we formally chartered the
Meshugge Nuts alley as a
national organization for
Jewish clown s and entertainers.
What does Meshugge
mean ? Meshugge is a Yiddish
word meaning "Senseless
or Crazy." In conversation,
if you were to say that
guy is a "meshuggena," it
would imply that the person
was crazy or nuts. So, the
Meshugge Nuts roughly
can translate to the crazy
nuts .... goofballs .. . you get
the picture ... and as clowns,
it fits. The words, Meshugge
or Meshuggena, have been
absorbed into the English
language and can even be
found in Webster's Dictionary.
Through regular on-line
discussions, I found that
many Jewish clown s felt the
same as I did. None of us
had a roll in ministry. Perhaps
there was opportunity
to broaden the scope of ministry
clowning. I suggest ed
that we approach a major
clowning organization in an
effort to reach out to other
Good New s Clowns On
Everyone loves a parade . We
find so many different reasons
to have them . This presents us
with the dilemma of finding
new ideas to entertain as we
march.
Our Alley "The Good News
Clowns" has found itself
involved in more and more
parades every year. Recently a
local parade we have marched
in for numerous years had a
theme of "International." What
a welcomed idea that was!
What else could we do but
go out as Clowns of America
International. We decorated
our vehicle with the official
"20 Years of Laughter" and
"COAI" logo. We had cut out
As we marched we did
What a great day it was. The
we were introduced. They were
The Ne w Calliope

Recently, a well known
fellow entertainer made
the comment to me "Whe n
I first met you, you were
ju st a birthday clown".
Hold on there a second.
Just a birthday clown?
JUST a birthday clown!
Oh my. In this day and age
of enlightenment about
what a birthday clown
does, I never thought I'd
hear that again. Didn't that
thought process go out the
window alon g with other
fictional statements, like
"all politicians are honest"
or "woman can't vote" or
"men can 't have babies" ....
oh wait, that last one is still
true.
What is it about
birthday partie s? Some of
us love to do them . Others
don't. I've had Ringling
clowns confess that they're
terrified of the thought
of being in a living room
surrounded by a group
of young children, trying
to entertain them. Then
there are those of us who
love the fact that the kids
are close and involved in
everything we do. Every
time we walk into a party,
it' s going to be different.
We are challenged and
surprised, applauded and
loved. Their living room is
our stage and we're there
to celebrate their special
day. What' s not to love?!
I was recently hired to
perform at a birthday party
for seven-year -old twins.
The mother had hired me
11 years earlier when her
older son was seven. When
I got there, big brother was
sitting in a chair against the
wall with his girlfriend. He
was quiet and never moved
throughout the party.
When I started to make the
balloon animals after the
magic show, he hopped off
his chair and sat down on
the floor, crossing his legs,
to be with alJ the other kids
to get his balloon. Grinning
from ear to ear, once
again he was that little
boy enjoying his seventh
birthday party!
If you are trying to
figure out if you want
to do birthday partie s or
not, you'd better hurry
and decide. Because once
people see you as a clown ,
the next question out of
their mouth is usually "Do
you do birthda y partie s?"
You need to be ready with
an answer. So, the best
thing to do is take a few
minute s and figure out if
this interests you and then
start planning what you 're
going to do.
A birthday party is
a performance. It has a
beginning, middle and an
end. The 'beginning' is
your entrance. What do
you do when you arrive?
Each party is different.
Sometime s the kids will
see you getting out of your
car and they 'll surround
you as you come into
their house. Sometimes
they' ll be in the backyard
playing and you'll need
to gather them together to
start. Other times, moms
will have them sitting in a
semi-circl e waiting for you
to come into the room. If
it's at a public restaurant ,
the kids may be seated
at tables. If it' s at a park,
they might be on the play
structures. Each time can
be different.
Your entrance needs to
take this into consideration.
After introducin g yourself
and welcoming everyone,
what will you do next?
Sing a song? Play a game?
Set up your show using a
lot of physical comedy?
Make a balloon hat for the
birthday child? Hand out
stickers? What you do at
your parties will be unique
to you. You get to decide
everything and that's where
the fun is.
The 'middle ' is your
actual performance . This
can include but not be
limited to magic, music,
cont inued on page 32
and have fun with this.
Remember that different
ages will respond
differently to what you
do. In other words, you
wouldn 't want to do the
exact same show for
three-year-old s and tenyear-o
lds. It's important to
make adju stments for the
any performan ce, you will
want smooth transition s
from each activity. Keep
things moving, so there's
no 'dead time' in your
show. Think about the
children's program s on
TV that quickly move
from one thing to the next.
That's how you want your
show to be, keep ing their
attention the entire time
you're there.
If you are going to
offer anything that 's
one-on-one, like balloon
anima ls or face painting,
it's works well to do that at
the end of your show. You
can tell stories as you make
the balloon animals to keep
them interested. But if
there are a lot of childr en,
you will start to lose their
attention after a while. And
you wouldn 't want this to
happen in the middle of
your show. So, doing this
at the end of your show
usually works best. Plus
it prevents any balloons
popping right in the middle
of your show or a balloon
sword fight breaking out.
Now that you have
your pa1ty plann ed, it
is important to come up
with a p1ice. It used to be
difficult , if not impo ssible ,
to find out what other
clown s were charging.
Now everyone posts that
information on their web
sites. But keep in mind
that you are ju st beginning
and you're not ready to
command top profess ional
prices until your party is a
top profe ssional show.
As far as advert ising to
let people know that you
do birthday partie s, ju st
remember to hand out lots
of business cards whenever
you'r e out in public as
a clown . And once you
perform at a birth day party,
the other mom s will be
calli ng to book you for
their child's party too.
Birthday parties come
in all ages, sizes, shapes,
location s and cultures.
There are the sweet, quiet
little girl parties. There are
also the rowdy eight-year
old boys who will test your
patience and make you
wonder why you 're doing
this.
There are the parties
that invite all the children
from their class which
include the good ones as
well as the ones who will
be a challenge. The re will
be heartbreaking ones
where the birthday child
is losing a battle with a
tenninal illness. There will
be parties you are having
so much fun at that you
don't even want to leave.
Th e partie s will be
indoor s, outdoo rs, in
private homes, and in
public locations. There
will be young groups , old
groups, fun ones as well as
ones you'd like to forget.
And through them all,
you are there to enterta in .
You are ther e to make this
day special. You will be
remembered long after the
guests are gone , the toys
have been outgrown and
childh ood left behind. You
are the ir enter tainment and
sometime s even their main
gift.
There is no such
thing as "j ust" a birthday
You are probab ly
good time s will be had.
I'm hopin g that alleys are
considering hosting future
Please start talking among
I wou ld like to thank the
The New Calliope

Junior Joeys, have you
ever encou ntered someone
afraid of you while you
have been out as a clown?
Somet imes there are people
who are truly afraid of
clowns, not ju st small
children, but teenagers and
adults too. I don't mean the
people who actually come
up and say to your face
"I'm scared of clown s" or
sometime s they say things
that are ju st plain mean to
you. These people aren't
really afra id of clowns; they
just seem to enjoy doing and
saying mean things, and not
ju st to clow ns but to other
people. I'm sure you know
which ones I mean. These are
usually the people who are or
were bullie s in school when
they were grow ing up. Those
people you should ju st walk
away from.
The people I am talking
about are so afraid of clowns
that they will walk away
or even run when they see
a clown com ing down the
street. They will usually hide
their face with theiJ hand s
and probab ly won' t say
anything to you. When you
see this happening, it is best
not to bother that per son.
In fact you shouldn 't say
anythin g and do just what
they are doing , walk in the
other direction. If someone
is with the person who is
afraid and tells you unkindl y
to go away, don't take it
personally , but don't allow
them to be rude to you either.
Walk away and ignore their
remark s, but make sure to tell
the adult you are with what is
happening.
We as clowns are usually
not sure what has happened
to these particular people
who are afra id of clowns.
Sometimes parents force
small children to go next to a
clown , to take a picture ju st
because the parent think s
the clown is really cool, not
knowi ng and seeing that
their little one is extreme ly
unhappy about it. This kind
of situation can create a fear
of clowns that can some times
stay with them as they grow
up.
When I have talked to
grown- ups who are afra id of
clown s, some have told me
that a clown scare d them and
chased them around when
they were childr en. Others
have told me that they were
scared as children when they
watched movies like "It" or
"Ki ller Clow ns from Outer
Space ".
Another reaso n people
are afraid of clown s are
the "lipstick" clowns, who
have never been to any kind
of clown class, or read up
on clowning and what the
clown etiquette . I have seen
so many "lipstick" clown s
where they literally use
lipstick for their makeup.
They use gooey and drippy
makeup creating jelly mouth s
(REALLY BIG mouths) and
using no powder. They wear
Halloween clown costumes.
These are the kind of clow ns
that give clowning a bad
name.
Most of the lipstick
clowns don't realize what
they are doing and usually if
a clown who knows clown
etiquette approaches them
and encourages them to
attend a club or alley meeting
to learn about clowning, they
usually want to learn more
and take the advice .
Remember that
Caulroph obia is considered
a "phobi a" ju st like
arachnophobia (fear of
spid ers) or any other fear,
like being afraid of the dark.
When a small child is
afraid of the dark, a parent
should understand but also
teach the child slowly how
not to fear the dark . And so
it should be the same for
small children who fear us as
clowns. Although we should
respect the child's fear, we
hope that parent s also teach
their children how to get over
their fear as they get older.
When you put on your
makeup and costume, stand
back and look at yourself.
Have someone take a picture
of your clown and look at
it later. Do you feel you
look scary or do you think
you look nice enough for
someone to come up and say
HI to you? If you feel you
look good and others tell you
that you look good, then you
are doin g the best you can as
a clown.
BUT don 't stop learning!
Attend as many clown club
or alley meeting s as you
can. Attend conve ntions,
local, regional or national.
COAI' s national conventio n
is coming soon to Kenner,
LA. Are you attending and
did you get your school work
in order for you to attend as
I desc ribed in the last New
The New Calliope

Membership Growth
During the month of
January nearly three dozen
new member s joined the
ranks of COAi. One of
those new member s is
a clown by the name of
Kelli. Kelli is not a new
clown . She has been a
clown for over nine years.
She does birthday partie s,
community events and
loves to face paint. I met
her briefly the first time at
the 1999 No rtheast Clown
Convention. Thi s past fall
she stopped by to visit the
Electric City Clowns.
We were at The
Capit al Region Clown Arts
Fest ival the first weekend
in January where we had
a chance to chat. I asked,
"Ke lli are you a memb er
of COAi ?" Her respon se
was" .. . No, but I have
often thought about it. .. "
I gave her an app licat ion,
she filled it out, gave me a
check made out to COAi
and I mailed it in to the
business office for her. She
is now a member of COAI.
I saw her at an event
in Lake George, NY on
February 4 where she
was hard at work makin g
smiles. I asked if she had
received her new member
packet from the business
office . She told me that she
had and even had it with
her!
As I have talked with
COA i member s over the
past year , I have learned
that many of us are pretty
good about asking the
clowns we mee t if they
are members of COAi.
We seem to fall short in
March/Ap ril 2006
"followin g up" with those
who tell us they are not.
Mo st of us, while we
are enthusiastic COAi
member s, are reluctant to
be seen as a pain in the
butt as we promote COAi
to our fellow clown s. No
body like s a pushy clown,
right?
Those folk s who are
experts on developing
members hip and increa sing
membership levels
suggest that "follow -up"
is the key to succe ss whe n
growing organiza tional
memb ership. I may have
mentioned that the last
time I wrote about COAi's
desire to have 6000
mem bers on its rolls prior
to the end of 2006.
We also tend to think
that if a person is a clown ,
and has been around for a
while, they know about all
the clown arts member ship
organizations that exist. It
turns out that this is not a
good assumption to make.
As hard as it is to
believe, there are a lot
of clown s and clownin g
enthu siasts who know very
little abou t the clown arts
orga nizations that are here
to serve them, including
COAi. Following up with
a potential new memb er is
important for that reaso n
alone. We need to ass ure
ourselves that a potenti al
new member understa nds
what COAi is and the
benefits of member ship .
Then we need to make sure
they actually filled out that
member ship application ,
wrote out that due s check,
put them in an envelop
and sent them off to the
business office.
Your follow- up should
continu e to assure that
the new memb er has
received his or her new
memb er packe t from the
business office. Continue
your follow-up to assure
they are getti ng their New
Calliope .
Invite them to an alley
meetin g, if you haven't
already done so. Invite
them to the next clown
gathering in your area or
regional convention. Invite
them to the next COAi
convention. Your personal
follow-up assures the new
member that you are truly
interested in them and
their clowning activities
and gives you a chance to
expres s you r enthusiasm
for COAi and the art of
I
clowning.
Face it.
Some potential new
members requir e more
int erest than others. Some
potentia l new member s
aren't so quick to fill out
the app lication for a whole
variety of reaso ns. The
truth of the matter is, once
they get their new membe r
packet, New Calliope and
invitation to join a local
alley, they will apprec iate
the contin ued interest you
have expressed. Yes, you
may be a pain in the butt .
Howe ver, your enthusiasm
for COAi and willingness
to share, open the door to
friendship.
Six thousand memb ers
in 2006 is possible,
espec ially with your
participation and followup.
Turner Project Update
Turner Project Update - COAI: 20 Years Of
La,ughter
We have had several inquiries of late from
members who have ordered "20 Years Of Laugh ter."
I communicated with Jake Austad of Turner
Publishing. He said the book is in final editing and
copyrighting (February 11, 2006) and that Turner
expects to distribute the book in the spring based on
projected product ion scheduling. Please remember
that at our request, Turner extended the materials
submission deadline three times in 2005 to assure
maximum opportunity for membership participation
in the Turner project. With each extension of
the deadline, distribution was rolled back to
accommodate changes in the production schedule.
Jake assures us that the book will be worth the wait!
by people who looked at
the destruction heaped on
the Gulf Coast and thought
"we have to help." We
need to respond. We must
provide some comic relief
to make things just a little
better for the survivors and
the people serving them.
Since then, many
clowns have joined
together with relief
agencies and churches,
rubbed shoulders under the
banner of Red Nose Relief
and spent countless hours
providing comic relief to
their fellow man.
What has been
accomplished? While
some clowns were sorting
clothes in a shelter in San
Antonio, other clowns
were performing in various
Houston shelters. While
some clowns were visiting
survivors in shelters in
Dallas, other clowns
were serving hot food to
both survivors and relief
workers in Baton Rouge.
One moment, a coordinator
in West Texas was helping
a Katrina survivor find a
new apartment, the next
they found themselves on
the run from Rita.
A clown in Georgia
visited a temporary shelter
and helped several folks
locate misplaced family
members. Other clowns in
upstate New York worked
shoulder to shoulder with
local volunteers loading
trucks and trailers with
drinking water, disposable
March/April 2006
diapers and food stuffs.
Clowns from Boston and
Sagle traveled to Texas to
visit with and perform for
children and their families
displaced by the storms.
Clowns from outside
the affected area have
traveled in to St. Bernard
Parish of New Orleans
to help gut houses. Other
clowns have sat with
families in the 9th Ward
and tried to off er comfort ,
understanding and a little
comic relief while listening
to stories of survival and
efforts to rebuild homes
and community.
A clown in Washington
welcomed home relief
workers and helped them
recapture important family
events and celebrations
that were sacrificed while
serving the survivors.
While all this was
going on, the clowns who
developed and refined
the concept of Red
Nose Relief as a service
organization took the
time and expended the
effort to form a non-profit
corporation and seek
charity status from the
Internal Revenue Service.
Clowns across the world
have responded to the
call to help, in one way or
another.
The steering
committee came together
in January, formally
constituted the board
of Red Nose Relief and
elected officers. Shortly
after their meetings, they
learned that the IRS had
granted the petition for
charitable tax-exempt
status. Their vision of a
service group, based in
the clown arts, providing
comic relief following
a disaster had become a
reality.
During the
organization effort, Red
Nose Relief bas been
proud and honored to have
the support of the major
clown arts membership
groups to include COAi,
WCA, ISCA, SECA,
TCA, MACA and others.
Members of these groups
have stood up, said "You
can count on me" and they
have gotten involved or
pledged their support for
future endeavors.
Red Nose Relief
What's happening
now? Response plans are
being drafted. Business
plans are being developed.
Education efforts are being
considered. Promotional
efforts are being refined.
Fundraising is proceeding.
We are moving full steam
ahead.
To learn how you can
become involved, go to
www.rednoserelief.org.
The only requirement is
that you have the heart
of a clown, you take the
personal initiative to say
"You can count on me"
and then follow-up. •
Last Walk-Arounds
Let's take a few moments to remember our fellow joeys who have left our presence, but not our
hearts ...
Sylvia "Maisy the Bag Lady " Columbu s
Sylvia Co lumbu s lived to make people happy, not
onl y as Mai sy the Bag Lady, but in her daily life. She
always tried to make people around her feel goo d and
if she could make you laugh , she was happ y.
Sylvia passed away on Januar y 9 at the age of 91
years. For 17 years she volunteered at the Northwest
Indiana Special Education Cooperative in Crown
Point , IN , assisting spe cial education childr en with
their swimmin g. She made monthly tlip s to H ines
Hospital in Chic ago to play bingo & socialize with
veteran s. As a member of the Calumet Clowns in
Hammond , IN for 24 years she perform ed regularly
at charity events, hospital s, and nursing home s and
attended World and Mid west clown conventions
all over the world . Wh en she wasn' t clowning she
collect ed canceled stamp s for the Lion s Club and
maga zines for Hine s Hospital.
She will be missed not only by the Calum et
Clown A lley, her many friend s and famil y, but by aJI
that knew her smile and generosity.
Lovingly submitted by Judy "Hearts " Diehl
Peggy "Iris " Hildenbrand
Iris was born Nov 6, 1941... She ser ved as
treas urer for Tri Rivers Clowns. Iris derived her
clown nam e fro m workin g as an age nt for the IRS.
To say she was special in so many ways would be
an understatement. She don ated her time to help the
elderly with their taxes each and every yea r. She
worked with the city of Pitt sburgh Schools in their
Stash the Trash program and was actively involved
in bettering her communit y of Mt. Washington.
Fro m her lavender Yak Wig to her purple shoes
with elastic laces (cuz she never learned to tie) she
will long be remember ed. She made a difference
makin g this world we live in a better place. She lost
her battle to cancer on Jan 19. She may be gone but
fond memori es and laughs shared with her will be
carried on in our heart s forever. Personall y she has
been an inspiration to me . People come and go in our
everyday lives but it's peopl e like "Iri s" that leave a
mark in the hearts of many youn g and old. She may
be gone but she' ll NEVE R be forgotten. I hope that
someday down the road we can see each other again
to BUMP A NOSE! !! In loving memory "Julz " D.
The Ne w Calliope

A nnal Word from the Editor
, f i_-
One of the most challenging
aspects of producing
The New Calliope every
two month s is the cover.
What am I'm looking for?
To be honest I don't have an
answer, except I know when
I see something I like.
This issue our cover is
graced by a little girl named
Hannah Campbe ll who
participated in a Gir l Scout
Clown Class offered by Alley
44 in Michigan.
What I loved about thi s
picture was the contra st of
concentration and tranquility
Hannah portray s. She
is totally oblivious to everything
around her as she
takes great care in putting
on her makeup. The bright
color s in the background
make it obviou s she is sur-
The New
rounded by noise, excitement
and perhaps chaos yet
she remain s calm, committed
and quiet. Her being in
pink also adds to the softness
about her again in contrast
to the crayon colors in
the background.
What else do I like
about this photo? It reminds
me how important it is to
continue our love of our art
to our children, grand children
and everyo ne around
us who has an interest. Thjs
issue's Foto Funni es came
from a group of seniors who
becam e clowns in perhap s
their twilight years. Yet, I
know when they apply their
makeup they still possess
that dedication and commitment
young Hannah display
s on our cover.
Take time to
rememb er that
part of you that brough t you
to the art of clowning and
be glad it's still there! •
