Inspiration.... Collaboration ....
Recognition
I received a phone call from
a COAl member a few weeks
ago who asked what a clown
alley was and what it would
take to form one in his area. I
explained that a clown alley is
a specific number of members
bound together by a love of the
art of clowning, a set of bylaws
and a possible affiliation with
one of the national or international
clown arts membership
organizations such as COAi. I
also made mention of the fact
that COAI has eliminated alley
charter fees.
When clowns get together
as an alley, the focus is usually
on personal and professional
skill development and enhancement
supported by public performance
opportunities. I am a
card-can ying member of three
alleys and I have visited several
others over the years. I am the
first to admit that while I have
always been very active in an alley
or two, I haven't always been
a "good" alley member. At times
I have been selfish. At times l
have been non-communicative.
At times my alley membership
hasn't been a personal priority.
And, while I will claim to be a
member of the three alleys I belong
to, the truth is I have been
rather non-participatory in at
least one of them, going to meetings
only once in a while.
Now that I have admitted to
some of my shortcomings as an
alley member, Tam going to ask
you to thjnk about three things:
Think about inspiration.
Think about collaboration.
Think about recognition.
Now, I want to ask you
three questions:
What is a clown?
What is a clown alley?
Why do people join and
mai11tain their memberships in
clown alleys?
What is a clown? Such
a question to ask a bunch of
clowns! However, I think it is an
important question to ask when
the follow-up questions to it are
What is a clown alley? and Why
do people join and remain active
in alleys?
While there are lots of acceptable
answers to the question
"What is a clown?" I have always
liked this one - a clown is
a person who is trained to show
people how good they can feel
on rhe inside by doing something
unique or dis1i11ctive to touch the
ourside.
Why do I like this definition?
It states that a clown is a
person!
The person is trained. The
training received brings forth
the elements of professionalism
and professional standards to be
attained and maintained. Clowning
is, after all, an art; a craft; a
profession. It requires specialized
training. There are accepted
standards of appearance, performance,
as well as personal and
professional codes and standards
of conduct to be attained and
maintained.
Upon the conclusion of
training, if there is really a conclusion,
a clown will show people
how good they can feel on
the inside by doing something
unique or distinctive to touch the
outside. This implies sharing;
human interaction; understanding;
the application of some
unique and personalized talent;
and, some of that other stuff that
enters into being human, as well
as being a good clown.
What does all this really
mean? Simply, if a clown is to
be successful at what he or she is
doing, there has to be present in
him or her an underlying desire,
drive, need to share! Share time,
share space, share feelings, share
the art, share love, share life!
What is a clown alley?
lli story and tradition tell us that
the clown alley is the area on the
grounds where the circus clowns
went to apply their makeup, get
into costume, receive last minute
instructions and any line-up
changes, as well as get warmed
up for the show. At the conclusion
of their performances, the
clowns rendezvoused in the alley
to decompress, maybe have
a cool drink or a meal and deal
with whatever was coming next.
That is some of the history and
tradition.
In regard to
our local clown
arts groups, I have
always maintained that an alley
is at least two folks with a
similar interest - clowning - who
get together on a regular basis to
share their interests, along with
some milk and cookies or other
refreshments! There is something
spiritual about the act of
breaking bread together. Eating
together fosters sharing. And, by
sharing on a regular basis, the
members who share improve.
They get better at what they do.
They are connected to the performing
an of clowning and its
many traditions. Thus, they not
only become better at what they
do, but the performing art of
clowning is propagated. The art
form is better able to put its best
foot forward when these alley
members venture into public to
do their thing -- perform for their
audiences.
Now, we all know that
COAl has various requirements
for an alley charter to be granted:
at least five COAI members,
an application to be completed,
bylaws to be reviewed, regular
reports to be submitted and the
like.
However, when you break
the alley thing down, you have
three basic elements. You have
PEOPLE - Alley members.
COAi Clowns - Folks interested
in clowning. You have similar
interests - the art, the craft and
profession of clownjng. And,
You have the desire to share.
Combine them and you have a
clown alley!
Now. let's look at the act
of joining a clown alley. Why
would a clown, or an aspiring
clown, or a person with an interest
in the clown arts or anyone
else want to join a clown alley?
They join because they
have the expectation of or need
satisfaction. They have identified
a need in their life and they feel
that joining the clown alley is
going to potentially satisfy that
need.
While the act of joining
appears simple enough, the need
Who Knows Travel Better
Than A Clown Nose
COAi is proud lo present
the travels a11d adven/ures
of anolher International
Amba ssador: The International
Ambassado r Program extends
the COAi programs beyond
our preselll border bringing
opport unilies 10 both the
traveling clown and the
country visiled.
If you are considering a trip
abroad, bring a new dimension
to yo ur travels by looking into
the International Ambassador
Program.
As my traveling take s
me to faraway places, I am
intri gued by the different
culture s and how we are all
the sa me (human that is). The
difference is how we discipline
ou rselves. My latest trave ls
took me to Japan. Twas so
amazed to see how beautifu l
it was. Even thoug h it was
right before spring (when the
one offic ial cherry tree has
five bloom s) it snowed almost
every day. I did not hear any
co mp lain ing about how co ld
it was excep t from my own
mouth! Whic h goes to show
how undi sciplined I am.
I was remi nded to bring
clothin g in layer s but cho se
to be a light packer so I co uld
bring hom e more souvenirs.
I did make a grea t find in a
coat that is very colo rfu l and
matche s my clown cost ume.
I learned how Japane se use
colo rs to help them in their
daily life. The co lors rep resent
what they are thankful for as
well as being gratefu l for every
day they are given.
I d id not plan for anything
spec ial to happen, but I was so
lucky when I arrived in Osaka .
There were stree t ente rtainers
there. I co uld see the hard work
they put into their sk ills. The
ju gglers were right on with
their j uggling too ls as we ll as
their juggling partners. They
took thei r time to make sure
everyone who was watching
enjoyed thems elves. Then , as
an added surprise, we were
asked to play wit h the m and
rece ived prizes or "t hank yous "
fo r joini ng in on the fun. I was
ready! I had my noses, along
with my pin and ca rd. I was
told it was good to exc hange
personal items. But they were
really surprised whe n I handed
out red noses . I was ca lled
"sister" to the gro up after I
showed them 1 cou ld do a little
ju ggli ng myse lf (sca rves). I
kept them in the air until the
wind carr ied them away. What
a great ending wit h lots of
laug hter.
The cruise aro und the main
island of Japan was lovely. We
were gree ted by mayor s and
head townsmen at eac h port we
docked. Great entertainment
was provided along with
beau tiful flowers . I came back
wit h a list of thin gs to lea rn
and how to use them in my
persona l clowning events at
home.
Twas taught to enjoy what
I do. Seco nd, to relax and it
will come much easie r (it was
suggested I do yoga which
requir es great disc ipline too).
The third and final lesson was
to practice ... practice ... pract ice.
And whe n you think you got
it...pra ctice agai n. Thi s is why
the Japane se are so sk illed. Not
on ly do they give 100 % wit h
eve ry perfo rmance but they
have been taught from a very
young age .
l did get to do some
clowning on the ship . I had
bro ught my traveling bag
of balloons so I made hats
and other treats. I gave a
twi sting lesso n to so me of the
passe ngers - both childre n and
adu lts. I eve n did a short show
to end the trip. Now that was
a little roug h! We hit a section
from pa ge 3
itself is quite complex. The expectation
of satisfaction may be
even more complex.
I am not a psychologist or
a sociologist. It strikes me that
jo ining an alley is actually based
on some pretty self-centered and
selfish motivations. Those who
are into psychology and sociology
will tell you that joining
is the outward response to an
internalized need. It's natural for
folks to band together for mutual
interest and support. Clowns are
like everyone else.
One of the challenges alleys
face, as a group, is to get past
the egos, the selfishness and the
self-centeredness members bring
to the alley when they join and
get down to the basics of sharing
and mutual support.
Why do clown alley members
remain members of the
alley or alleys they belong to?
Simply stated, the alley is satisfying
their needs! Well, at least
some of their needs. No alley
could satisfy all of every member's
needs. However, there are
some general needs all clowns
seem to have. It may be the need
to learn something new or perfect
an already developed skill
- a little inspiration. It may be
the need to share, practice and
rehearse - a little collaboration.
It may be the need to belong
and feel appreciated - a little
recognition. It may be the need
for some advanced training,
the need to practice, rehearse,
perform, collaborate and get
feedback on how they are doing.
It could be the need for professional
association.
Yes, a little inspiration; a
little collaboration; a little recognition.
All that, and so much
more. The real challenge for the
alley leadership is to properly
identify the needs of the members
and seek to insure that those
needs are satisfied.
One of the alleys I happen
to belong to is the Electric City
Clowns in Schenectady, NY.
We carry some 50-60 clowns on
the active dues-paying mailing
list. The alley, when compared
to other alleys, is quite active.
Why? There is an element within
the alley membership that says
Page 6
"We need to be active".
Along with this element,
there are several others. There
is the element that says "We
want to know more about face
painting techniques." There is
an element that says "We want
to perform in area nursing, adult
and children's homes." There is
another element that says "We
want to go to conventions. We
want to compete. We want to
give a good showing. We want to
win!" There is another element
that says "We want to learn more
about the supporting arts." There
is another element that says "We
want to have a real! y active International
Clown Week." There
is a certain element that says "T
like what you guys do and I want
to hang with you." And these are
just a few of the elements that
exist in the alley.
Can the effectiveness of an
alley be measured by its current
membership and its activities
and events/public performance
lists? Possibly. Probably. Maybe
...
However, I would suggest
that you may want to look at the
base of former members of the
alley you belong to. Track down
and talk to those former members
of any alley and you might
be given the keys to future alley
success.
What do I mean? Clowns
generally leave an alley when
their needs are not satisfied. The
heart strings of loyalty have not
been plucked by the alley membership
or the programs offered.
Again, using the Electric
City Clowns as an example, the
alley has a list of approximately
I 00 former members. They are
an interesting bunch to talk to.
"Why don't you come to
meetings any more?" "Why are
you no longer active in the alley?"
• My shift changed at work.
I am now working when the alley
meets.
• I didn't enjoy my alley
membership. It wasn't fun.
• I discovered a new passion.
Clowning seems to have
run its course.
• We had a baby.
• We bought a house.
• I am tired of the same
fo lks running things. I have
wanted to help out 011 several
happenings, events or projects,
but, I was never made to feel my
input was welcome.
• There is not enough emphasis
011 ministry c/owni11g.
• I don't feel that a clown
alley should be a place for kids.
• I worked my butt off d11ri11g
the 1999 a11d 2002 conventions
we hosted. Nobody appreciated
what I did.
• I was a memberfor three
years and nobody ever menlioned
me or the clowning I do
for _____ (Jill in the
blank) in the newslette1; on the
Web site or during any of our
meetings.
• We moved.
Some very interesting responses.
Without too much exaggeration,
I have heard them all
and then some as I have chatted
with our former members over
the years.
Former COAi Artist In Resident
Bob "BB" Widdop once
said that an alley is like a family.
There are small families. There
are large families. Within these
families there are cou1t ships,
marriages and births. There are
birthdays, anniversaries and
funerals. There are misunderstandings.
There are fights. And,
yes, there are even break-ups.
There is laughter, there is sadness.
There are smiles and there
are tears. There is hate and there
is love.
And it all takes place the
fourth Wednesday of the month
at 7pm in Schenectady, NY at
the Carman United Methodist
Church Hall! Don't be late.
If you arrive after the meeting
starts, please come in the hall
quietly. Don't forget to sign
in and go to your seat quickly
without disrupting the meeting.
Don' t try to buy a 50-50 ticket
until the business meeting is
adjourned!
When two people interested
in clowning come together to
learn some new balloon sculptures
or review and rehearse a
skit or share the latest full face
design, do they ever think that
all this drama could unfold
before them? [f they did, we'd
probably never have another
clown alley formed anywhere in
this performing art.
Why would I dare to suggest
that the keys to future alley
success lie with those members
who are no longer active?
We all need a starting point
or a perspective for review.
Looking at where you have been
and the mistakes made along
the way can often offer ideas of
where to go, and, where not to
go, what to do and what not to
do as you consider and plot the
future.
Each of the major clowning
organizations have several
alleys, troupes, and clubs. When
you look at the major organizations'
directories and their Web
sites, clown alleys are offered up
as a significant benefit of membership.
Banding together for
mutual support. There are clown
alleys all around the world.
fSCA alleys and clubs, WCA
alleys and, yes, approximately
120 COAJ alleys. Yet, at least
two of the clowning organization
are forced to admit that less than
30% of their total memberships
are active in a local affiliated
alley! Why? There seems to be
lots of reasons. But when you
sift through all the available information,
you analyze all of the
details, you chat with the leaders
and the members and you consider
all of the social and physiological
factors that play out in
group dynamics, it boils down to
one simple fact:
Individual member needs
are not being satisfied by the
alley they belonged to. Some
members weren't inspired. Some
members weren't allowed to collaborate.
Some members weren't
recognized for their various
efforts. When 11eeds aren't satisfied,
members leave. It's plain
a11d simple.
If you are a formal or informal
alley leader, you should
want to offer an alley environment
and alley programs that
will inspire your members! Find
out what programs those members
who left you would like
to see. What would bring them
back into the fold? Ask them to
come back to the alley.
to page 7
President's Comments
from page 6
Want to grow your alley
membership? Look at and talk to
those who have left your alley.
Find out why they left. As you
move forward, try really hard to
make sure a positive, supporting
alley environment is maintained
and the negatives identified by
your former members, whatever
those negatives are, are removed
from the mix. Then invite them
back.
Always keep in mind that
clowns are performing artists.
Performing artists traditionally
do not compromise well. Don't
seek to compromise, even during
a business meeting. A performing
aitist needs to collaborate.
A performing artist needs to be
inspired. A performing artist
wants to be recognized.
An alley that offers an
environment perceived as inspirational
and nurturing, as
well as collaborative by its alley
members will be a productive,
successful, long-lived alley. lts
members will be loyal.
Inspire your members. Allow
them to collaborate. Recognize
their achievements. Pluck
those strings of loyalty.
Insure your members are
appreciated. Make sure they are
recognized for their various efforts
and accomplishments, in
the art of clowning or otherwise.
Insure they are offered the opportunity
to collaborate with
each other. Clowns need that!
Inspire your members.
Foster collaboration. Recognize
them.
Inspiration. Collaboration.
Recognition. Weave them in to
your alley environment and your
alley programs and I would suggest
that you will need to find a
new meeting place.
Why? Where you are meeting
now won't have the room to
support all those folks who want
to come to your meetings and be
a part of what you have planned.
Enjoy the upcoming holiday
season. Be safe. Make lots of
smiles. Help to make 2007 the
best year ever! •
Fall Board Meeting Report
by Pat Newro11
The 2006 fal I board meeting
was the first presided over
by our new officers elected this
past spring. Past president Cheri
Venturi was also present in her
new role of Director-At-Large.
Sitting next to President Paul
Kleinberger, the two presented a
unified leadership to the members
in attendance.
Newly-elected COAi President
Paul Kleinberger opened the
meeting with his thoughts, goals
and aspirations with an invitation
to get involved. Using a theme
of "Inspiration, Collaboration
and Recognition" he pointed out
many areas to be examined and
addressed over the course of the
next two years. His goals include:
• Advance and expand the
membership opportunities.
• Foster internal communication.
• Encourage membership
involvement and recognition.
• Bolster the membership
through recognition.
• Recognize the seniors for
their accomplishments.
• Further the junior joey
program.
• Boost the current membership
package.
• Review and refine the
COAi Mission Statement.
Sta11di11 g and Temporary
Committee Assignments
President Kleinberger presented
and the Board approved
the appointments of the following
members to the committees
Advisor: Cleon Babcock.
Regional Ambassador Appointments:
Cathy Hardebeck
and Angel Morales
International Ambassador
Program and Appointments:
FoJTest Wheeler and Albert Alter.
Director At Large Cheri
Venturi described her new
position as one that will continue
to develop as she finds areas that
need to be addressed. Her cuJTent
project is to work on the Code
of Ethics, as well as interacting
with the regional vice presidents
and ambassadors to help with
any projects they need to bring to
fruition.
President Kleinberger reported
that the executive board can
now conduct certain business by
email. This will help alleviate
some of the phone costs involved
with conference calling when
decisions or issues need to be
addressed.
Turner Project proofs have
been approved and returned to
Turner. The book COAi: 20 Years
of Laughter is due October 2006.
There has been discussion regarding
materials being received
by a postmark date or received
by a specific date. This can make
quite a difference in time allowed
to receive materials when
one considers the mailing time
required on an international basis.
Pam Bacher will contact the
various committee chairs who are
dealing with projects that have
deadlines and examine each one
on an individual basis.
The issue of the board being
in costume and makeup for the
general meeting came up for discussion
again. Though the board
does find it difficult to conduct
business in clown, they agree the
membership enjoys seeing the
board in their clown characters, as
well as performing for the general
membership. Tom King will coordinate
with the 2007 convention
committee a spot or event during
the convention for the board to be
seen in character.
fn keeping up with the times,
the board decided it is appropriate
to investigate a new logo for
COAi. This will be accomplished
by an internal contest coordinated
by The New Calliope. Logo
submissions will be received by
Newton Studios, Inc., to be processed
and prepared for possible
electronic application. Tom and
Pat Newton will put together a
plan on how a logo contest could
be developed and implemented.
A discussion was started
regarding the development of a
Lifetime Achievement Award.
This award would be for someone
who doesn't attend conventions
and is not a competition clown;
however, is a COAi member who
has significantly contributed to
the art and the organization during
their clowning career. The
idea will continue to be developed
and carried over to the spring
meeting of the board.
Proposed revisions to the
bylaws were presented by the
Rules committee. These will be
published in a future issue of The
New Calliope.
During the meeting, many areas
regarding COAi were discussed
and acted upon.
COAi Convention Many
questions were raised regarding
the shrinking numbers of
members attending the
conventions. The competitions
have raised the bar of clown
appearance; however, questions
continue to be raised about
clown performance skills. Great
potential is demonstrated yet
there lacks significant rehearsal.
The same areas were discussed
regarding parade-ability.
Discussions will continue and
ideas for improvement will be
presented as they are generated.
Being in Missouri at the actual
convention site was extremely
advantageous to the board. There
was the opportunity for a tour of
the convention site, as well as, an
opportunity to meet the hotel staff
and get to know the host alley
members.
The DVDs and CDs that have
been created from photos taken
during the 2005 and 2006 conventions
have proven popular and
have generated revenues for the
scholarship fund. Mike Cox and
Merilyn Ban-ett will take a look
at how many extra copies need to
be ordered to meet the continuing
demand. Additionally, since
a media release is signed by each
attendee at the convention in
order to take photos, it needs to
be investigated whether it is necessary
to specify a time limit on
future media releases.
Rick Danielson proposed
some of the convention classes
be video-taped and then be made
available for sale to those who are
unable to attend the convention.
There was concern among the
board regarding the cost of such
an undertaking and noted that
some of the instructors already
have videos of their presentations.
It was decided to investigate
further.
The 2008 Convention will be
in Richmond, Virginia from April
15 through April 20.
Competition Cathy Mackey
and Karen Reinholt, along with
Bill LeBlanc have been actively
involved in developing the
competition arena. The board
acknowledged a need to find a
back-up for Chris and Cindy
Hermann who do the computer
data processing. An effort will be
undertaken to identify possible
candidates with the necessary
background and experience.
Cathy is making revisions to
the existing competitions rules
particularly in the area of face
painting. Full face and cheek
art will be run immediately following
each other so anyone
who wants to compete in both
may do so; however, they will
require two models. There will
be further definition of the difference
between cheek and full face
categories. The time limits were
also changed to 5 minutes for
cheek art and IO minutes for full
face. Convention face painting
instructors would be allowed to
showcase their work, but would
not be eligible for competition.
The board concurred.
Presently there is no line item
for competition expenses in the
COAI budget. Claudia Keener,
Pat Roeser, and Cathy Mackey
will track the expenses in 2007 to
build a budget line item for future
budgets.
Clown Alleys There was a
boom in the number of alleys who
chartered with COAi when the
$ I 00 chartering fee was waived.
Angel Morales also expressed
concerns from some of the Latin
countries. The $100 US fee to
charter an alley, when converted
to some local monetary units,
is too much for many groups
who might consider chartering.
A motion was made and passed
to permanently waive the alley
charter fee. The educational materials
provided by COAi and sent
to alleys when they charter will
continue to be made available, but
for a small, yet-to-be-determined,
fee. A working group was formed
to develop a new pricing structure,
as well as, look at distribution
of educational materials.
At the 2006 spring general
meeting, the membership voted to
keep the I 00% alley compliance
requirement in place. A working
group was appointed to look
at everything dealing with the
I 00% alley requirement, as well
as, identify where clarifications
need to be published. The working
group will consist of Cathy
Hardebeck, Tom King, Connie
Kennedy and Teresa Gretton.
llltemational Clown Week The
board agreed they needed to get
involved with International Clown
Week to encourage members to
participate on many levels.
Pam Bacher presented her
idea of "Wear Your Clown Shoes
to Work" for those who work
full-time and may not be able to
participate in many of the week's
events. She found by wearing
her clown shoes in her work environment
she was able to create
an awareness of clowning. The
board approved her proposal.
Clown of the Year A Clown
of the Year enhancement package
was proposed. In an effo11 to
increase the prestige of this
award, additional perks are
added such as a press release
to be generated and sent to the
hometown media of the recipient
and a letter of congratulations
prepared and signed by the
board and presented to the
recipient. A special name tag, a
complimentary COAi convention
registration, and the hotel room
at the convention would all be
included. The board approved.
Education Members
have often suggested that the
educational materials currently
provided to new alleys should be
available to all members. The
board concurs and has undertaken
an effort to make it happen.
Cheri Venturi, Teresa Gretton
and Angel Morales volunteered
to assist with the updating of
Clowning IOI.
Merilyn Barrett is developing
Clowning 20 I, a complementary
educational program to IO I,
focusing on the entertainment
skills aspect of clowning. She
was asked to continue with this
project.
Cathy Hardebeck will be gathering
information about transferring
the educational tapes in the
COAi library to DVDs and other
electronic media so that they
could be made available to new
alleys, as well as individual members
at some point in the future.
Elections The 2006 election
results were recorded and
reported by Clowns Like Us Alley
#303. The results were reviewed
by the board. No objections
were noted and chair entertained
a motion to accept the election
results. The motion carried.
The board is looking at ways
to reduce the costs of the election
process. Board members Pam
Grants and Scholarships
Grants and scholarships approved
in the spring were reviewed.
Moonshine Mullah (look for
future issue to learn about this
fun new program) was approved
by the board for attendees of the
2007 convention. Merilyn Barrett
was asked to refine her other
proposals and bring them back in
the spring.
Good Cheer Program The
board agrees with Chairman Fred
Scholsshauer that the program
should be expanded to The New
Calliope and the Web. Fred will
continue to work the issue.
lntemational Ambassadors
Chairman Forrest Wheeler
advises the program needs to be
revitalized. The board concurs
and will explore options. Albert
Alter was appointed to work with
Forrest on the program.
International Clown Hall of
Fame COAT originally donated
start-up fees, significant materials
and support to this organization.
The board is displeased with the
direction ICHOF has taken in
recent years. It was decided Paul
Kleinberger will write a letter
to ICHOF officials expressing
COAJ's concerns.
[unior [oeys There was
discussion about the need to
educate the school systems
around the country about COAi's
educational benefits. It was noted
that some juniors have difficulty
being released from school to
attend a convention.
Candy Will has been working
on a j unior scholarship program.
An application was presented.
The dollar amount needs to be
determined by the Education
Director. Candy Will and Merilyn
Barrett will work together to
determine amounts to be made
available.
There was a request for guidance
in reference to the awards
given for the Red Nose Awards.
Pat Roeser wi II pull together the
Membership At the time of the
fall board meeting, the following
COAi members had signed up
the most new COAJ members:
Frances Poage (41), Paul
Kleinberger (29), Keith Stokes
(15), and Mike Cox ( 15).
There was some discussion
about increasing the dues. However,
since there has been no
formal proposal received nor motion
made, the debate was limited
and it will be addressed at another
time.
Membership Directory The
possibility of publishing a new
membership directory on CD
or DVD was presented by Pat
Newton. Mention was made
that a large portion of the COAi
membership does not appear to be
electronically inclined. Printing
options for the directory will be
explored.
Merchandise Cafepress.
com is not being used by the
membership. DVDs of the
conventions have sold well
with continuing requests for
Grand Rapids and the 20th year
photo collection. Discussion
about getting information to the
alleys regarding Cafepress.com
concluded with the regional vice
presidents agreeing to notify
members of this service.
New Calliope Because a
request to reprint an article from
The New Calliope came up
over the past few months it was
decided that Pat Newton and
Pam Bacher would address each
request on an individual basis.
The board approved the introduction
of classified advertising
in The New Calliope effective
with the Nov/Dec 2006 issue.
The board approved the idea of
utilizing a US Post Office escrow
account set-up for mailing The
New Calliope in an effort to help
expedite the mailing process.
Public Relations COAi needs
to do a better job promoting itself
internally to its members and
externally to those interested in
learning more about the art form.
Judy Johnson will chair the PR
committee.
Rick Danielson proposed the
idea of purchasing ads in overseas
venues to promote international
membership in COAi. It was
decided to pursue having articles
about COAT and its members
published in Stars and Stripes or
other similar publications. Paul
Kleinberger will write a letter to
the editor to attempt to initiate
this.
Regional Ambassadors
The board feels efforts need
to expand. Paul suggested
every state should have two
ambassadors. States with large
groups of COAT members need
more. Latin countries should
have two in each country. Canada
needs two in every province. The
International region should have
two ambassadors in every country
where COAJ members reside.
Assigning the ambassadors
responsibilities is a great way to
develop future officers.
Angel Morales expressed the
need to have certain ambassador
materials translated into Spanish.
Fall Board Meeting Report
Additionally, it was agreed that
these ambassadors need to be
recognized in some fashion. Paul
Kleinberger and Cheri Venturi
will continue developing ideas.
Regional Vice Presidents Bill
Hart resigned as the Northeast
Vice President due to a change
at his place of employment.
The board reluctantly accepted
his resignation. Bill LeBlanc
of East Bridgewater, MA was
recommended to assume this
office. The board voted yes and
the appointment was made.
The position of South Central
Regional Vice President has been
vacant since July I. Two candidates
volunteered to take on the
responsibility. Toni Dufrene of
Metairie, LA was asked to fill the
position. The board voted yes and
the appointment was made.
La reunion de otoiio de 2006
de la directiva fue la primera
presidida por nuestros nuevos
oficiales electos la pasada primavera.
La pasada presidenta
Cheri Venturi tambien estuvo
presente en su nuevo rol de Directora
Asesora. Sentada junto
al Presidente Paul Kleinberger,
ambos presentaron a los miembros
presentes un liderazgo unificado.
El Presidente de COAi
recien electo, Paul Kleinberger,
comenzo la reunion con sus
pensamientos, metas y aspiraciones
con una invitaci6n a que
se incluyeran. Usando el tema
de "lnspiracion, Colaboraci6n y
Reconocimiento," el seiialo muchas
areas a ser examinadas y
dirigidas durante el curso de los
proximos dos aiios. Sus metas
incluyen:
• Aumentar y expandir las
oportunidades de la membresia.
• Promover Ia comunicacion
interna.
• Alentar la participacion
y reconocimiento de la membresia.
• Reforzar la membresia a
Cathy Hardebeck y
Angel Morales
Citas y Programas de los
Embajadores Internacionales:
Forrest Wheeler y Albert Alter.
La Directora Asesora Cheri
Venturi describio esta posicion
como una que continuara desarrollandose
mientras ella encuentre
areas que necesiten ser
dirigidas. Su proyecto actual es
trabajar en el C6digo de Eticas,
asf como interactuar con los
vicepresidentes y embajadores
regionales para ayudar con cualquier
proyecto que necesiten
realizar.
El presidente Kleinberger informo
que la directiva ejecutiva
ahora puede conducir ciertos
negocios de manera electronica
por email. Esto ayudara a
disminuir varios de los costos
telefonicos relacionados a llamadas
en conferencia cuando
se necesita tomar decisiones o
asuntos necesitan ser discutidos.
Las pruebas de! proyecto
Turner fueron aprobadas y
devueltas a Turner. El libro
COAi : 20 aiios de risas esta
para octubre de 2006.
Ha habido discusiones sobre
materiales recibidos por fecha
de matasellos o recibidos en
una fecha especffica. Esto puede
hacer una gran diferencia en el
tiempo asignado para recibir
materiales cuando uno considera
el tiempo de correo requerido en
base internacional. Pam Bacher
contactara los dirigentes de comites
que trabajan con proyectos
que tienen fechas lfmites
y examinara cada uno con estandares
individuales.
El asunto de que la directiva
este en su vestuario y maquillaje
de payaso para la reunion general
se llevo a discusion otra vez.
Aunque la directiva encuentra
dificultoso manejar los negocios
en sus ajuares, estan de acuerdo
en que la membresfa disfruta ver
a su directiva en sus personajes
de payaso, asf como actuar para
la membresfa general. Tom
King coordinara con el comite
de la convencion de 2007 un
momento u evento durante la
convencion para que la directiva
sea vista en sus personajes.
Manteniendonos al dfa en los
tiempos, la directiva decidio que
es apropiado investigar un nuevo
logo para COAi. Esto sera logrado
por un concurso interno
coordinado por el Calliope. Las
participaciones del logo seran
recibidas por Newton Studios,
Inc., para ser procesadas y
preparadas para una posible
aplicacion electronica. Tom y
Pat Newton trabajaran juntos en
c6mo un concurso para el logo
puede ser desarrollado e implementado.
Comenzo una discusion
sobre el desairn llo del Premio
de Logros durante la Vida. Este
premio serfa para alguien que no
paiiicipa en convenciones y no
es un payaso de competencias;
sin embargo, es un miembro
de COAi que ha contribuido de
manera significante al arte ya la
organizacion durante su carrera
de payaso. La idea continuara
desarrollandose y se traera a
colacion en la reunion de la directiva
de primavera.
Las revisiones propuestas a
los estatutos fueron presentadas
por el comite de Reglas. Estas
seran publicadas en una futura
edicion de The New Calliope.
Durante la reunion, muchas
areas relacionadas a COAi fueron
discutidas y trabajadas.
COAi Convention Surgieron
muchas preguntas sobre la
reduccion en la cantidad de
miembros que asisten a las convenciones.
Las competencias
han levantado los estandares
en la apariencia del payaso; sin
embargo, surgen preguntas sobre
los talentos en el desempeiio
del payaso. Se demuestra gran
potencial pero carece de una ejecucion
significativa. Las mismas
areas fueron discutidas sobre la
"paradabilidad". Las discusiones
continuaran e ideas para mejorar
seran presentadas mientras se
vayan generando.
Estando en Missouri en la localidad
actual de la convencion
fue extremadamente ventajoso
para la directiva. Allf hubo la
oportunidad para un paseo por el
espacio disponible, asf como la
oportunidad de conocer el personal
del hotel y dar a conocer
los miembros de! alley anfitrion.
Los DVD's y CD's que se
crearon de las fotos tomadas
durante las convenciones de!
2005 y 2006 fueron muy populare
y generaron creditos para
el fondo de becas. Mike Cox
y Merilyn Barrett verificaran
cuantas copias extras necesitan
ser ordenadas para cumplir con
la demanda. Adicional a esto,
ya que cada participante de la
convencion firma un relevo de
responsabilidad para poder fotografiarle
y utilizar las fotos para
promociones, se necesita investigar
si es necesario especificar
un tiempo lfmite en relevos de
responsabi Ii dad futuros.
Rick Danielson propuso que
alguna de las clases de la convencion
fueran grabadas y luego
se dispusieran para Ia venta
para aquellos que se les imposibilitara
asistir a la convencion.
Habfa un preocupaci6n entre la
directiva sobre el costo de esto,
y se comento que algunos de
los inst:ructores ya contaban con
videos de sus presentaciones. Se
decidio investigar mas a fondo.
La convenci6n de! 2008 sera
en Richmond, Virginia, del 15 al
manera activa en el desarrollo
de las competencias. La directiva
reconoci6 la necesidad de
Cindy Hermann, quienes hacen
el procesamiento de datos computadorizado.
Se hara un esfuerzo
para identificar posibles
experiencia necesarias. Cathy
esta hacienda revisiones a las
sin embargo, necesitaran dos
entre las categorfas de cara
se les permitira mostrar su
trabajo, pero no seran elegibles
para competencias. La directiva
qued6 en acuerdo.
Al presente, no hay lfmite
Claudia Keener, Pat Roeser y
Cathy Mackey contabilizaran
everyone to leave a tail at
the end ( about 2 inches or
so) and to squeeze the air
around the balloon to make
it longer and more flexible.
At the knotted end twist a
small bubble and a loop.
Hide the knot in the twist.
Feed the long encl through
the three loops you have
made. This creates the body
Use another 260 fo r
the center. To make the ends
look the same, tie a knot on
Skills - Magical Knot Rope trick
Level: Beginner
by Tim Laynor and Ann Sanders
Rope tricks make great walk
around s. Rope s pack small and play
big . When I take a stretch break from
a never-endin g face pa intin g line, I
like to ente rtain those waiting to be
pai nted. Thi s trick is easy to master
and one that is sure to please .
As with any performance , be sure
to pract ice before presenting to an
audience. The faste r you perform this
trick, the more difficult it becomes for
your audience to unravel the mystery
of how yo u created the knot.
I croche t blankets for a local
charity and use the left-over yarn as a
give-away to those who would like to
try the trick fo r them selves.
I would like to give cred it and
thank s to Bruce "C har lie" John son for
teac hing me this trick. •
THE SET UP: Tell you r audience that
you can hold on end of a rope in one
hand and the other end of the rope in
the other hand and without letting go
of the ends of the rope you can tie a
knot in the cente ,:
PROPS: Length of rope approximately
24" long.
With your right hand, reach over the
rope and under your left arm. Take
a hold of the end of the rope in your
assistant's right hand.
Have your volunteer assistant hold the
ends of the rope and tell him/her not to
let go until instructed to do so.
Have your assistant let go
of the rope.
A knot will magically.form
in the center of the rope.
With your le.ft hand, reach around the
back of the rope and take hold of end
in the assistant's left hand.
November/December 2006
Drop your arms so the rope will slide
off as you pull the rope apart.
HINT- Your arms will be crossed -
forming an "X" . In order.for the trick
to work, the rope must be on top of
your left arm and under your right.
Mista Wilt was one of 6 recipients
of the COAi Educational
Scholarship in 2006.
She is always striving to be
a better clown and was able
to utlize the resources of
COAi to further her
education this yea 1:
After applying for the
COAi scholarship, I somehow
managed to come up
with the money to attend
Clow n Camp in Lacro sse,
WI. I was absolutely thrilled
when I walked in to register
and was told I had received
a scholarship from COAL I
have attended Clown Camp
in Lacrosse for 15 years.
Clown Camp is a funfi
lied week of laughter,
classes, laughter, performances
, laughter, meeting
people from all over the
world and of course more
laughter. It is a safe place
to perform , be crit iqued,
and learn new ways to do
old thing s. I have learned so
many thing s in the 15 years
that I have attended.
Many of the ideas that
are taught at Clown Ca mp
help with clowning and
help in everyday life. Every
year I hear someth ing that
stirs the creativity inside.
I try to take what I learn
at ca mp and incorporate it
into my everyday life . Each
year I have attended I have
lea rned, laughed and cried.
November/December 2006
Thjs year was no excep tion .
Each day begins with
laughter if I am able to get
out of bed and attend breakfast!
The seco nd morning I
was surpri sed that the bathroom
was so barren. I soon
found out that the shower
was ice cold. I did not need
coffee after that! That ended
up being refe renced in severa
l skits throughout the
week.
This yea r the morning
classes were divided into
"tracks ." I chose the track
on comm unity safety and
educatio n. However even
though there were tracks
that did not mea n you had to
stay on the "track !"
The afternoo n cla sses
had a wide assort ment of
topic s. One of my favorite
classes was taught by an
Asian girl I had been roommates
with eight yea rs ago!
It was fun to reconnect with
old friend s and make new
ones.
Every afternoon exce
pt picture day was a
time to practice, or attend
IGds Clown Camp. It was
fun to see the kids putting
on make up, jugg ling and
laughing. I remember the
friend ships I made back
then and many I continue
to have as I attend Clown
Camp each yea r.
Eac h evening there was
a performan ce from an instructor
or instructors. After
the instructor s were finished
it was time for the partici
pants to perform on stage.
I always enjoy watching
new clown s perfor m. Thi s
yea r we were able to attend
an ice cream social and a
cancer survival benefit and
perform as clowns!
As the days flew by
I did go off the track and
attended severa l classes
geared towards the Caring
Clow n. I have been searching
for where I fit in as a
clown, and I discove red that
J might fit j ust fine in a nursing
hom e, as a clown for
now! That is what Clow n
Camp is to me .... a journey
to find where I fit.
I am so gratefu l for
rece iving the COAI scholarship.
When I arrived and
was told abo ut the scholarship
a big financial burden
was lifted. I was able to
enjoy myse lf, laugh, learn
more about myself, laugh
some more and not worry
abo ut the finances! •
Though they didn't know what a clown was, Tanzan ian
residents were soon wearing red noses.
if I had on ly seen a few elephants
... but I saw hundr eds !
Of course, elephant s were
not all I saw. Lion , wildebeest,
zebra, baboon, impala,
leop ard, giraffe , hippo, monkey,
crocodile, gaze lle, rhino,
cheetah , hyena, ja ckal, vulture,
mongoose, Cape buffa lo,
and so much more were "ca p
tured " by my cameras (digital
and video) .
Durin g my nine days in
Tanza nia I traveled throu gh
the dusty, dry Sere ngeti and
through the lush "j ungle"
around Lake Many ara . I baked
in the 104 temperature in
Tarangire National Park and
saw my breath as the sun rose
over the Ngorongoro Crater . I
soaked it all in ... the sights, the
sound s, the sme lls, the tastes,
the feel, the emotion.
It was in the Ngorongoro
Crate r that I shared a little of
my "wo rld" with the Ma sai.
A few days before I left for
Tanza nia a package arrived
from my dear friend "S hobi
Dob i." In it were 100 sponge
clown noses . I had promised
that I would take photos of
people wear ing clow n noses ...
but I had no idea how difficu lt
this promi se was going to be
to keep.
The first peop le I ap-
November/December 2006
proached with the clow n noses
(staff at one of the lodge s
I stayed at) simply gave me a
blank look. Th ey had no idea
what a "clow n" was . It took
several tries at defining the
"c lown'" befo re I fou nd the
ter ms they understood, but I
finally go t it. .. and got a few
photo s in the proce ss.
My guide in the village was
one of the chief's sons ... one
of 50 chi ldren by 13 wives.
I explained to him that a
"clown" was a perform er who
brought happine ss and laughter
to famili es ... to children .. .
to the elderly ... to the sick .. .
throu gh the use of comedy
and that the "clow n" was
identified throug h the wearing
of the false red nose. He
und erstood.
I put on one of the sponge
ball noses "Shobi " had sent
me. I mugged a bit. I waved
at Masa i children. I made
goofy faces. I spotted two of
the chief 's younger sons giggling
and I made my move. I
offered them clown noses ...
in exc hange for a photo. Th ey
accepte d.
From that moment on I had
Newly fo rmed Alley #394, the Corn E Clowns of Erie
County, took celebrating NCW one step further than. most
this yea ,: They actually had their very first meetin g on.
the fi rst day of Clown Week! Their participation began
when. they received the first of their ten proclamations,
from the town of Eden, NY Two of the members went to a
town. meeting in full clown gea,; where they were met by
another memb er who just happens to be the town clerk,
and received the proclamation from the town superviso1:
The entire town board wore red noses and were given the
"branch of government" (an.old tree branch!). The clowns
also appeared on three segments ofa local early morning
news program, where they talked abou t Clown. Week, Red
Nose Response, and their new alley. A skit was also
pe,formed which left several clowns and the reporter
soaked to the skin. But since they had pe ,formed in
torrential downpours that day, anyway, no one was too
upset about a little extra wate,: Two of the local
newspapers also ran stories about the group and their
"special" week. Both papers included pictures of the
Corn E Clowns. One member even went to her bank and
pharmac y and handed out red noses to all behind the
counters. We had such a great response, that next year
we've been asked to pe1form in. some of our
commun ities in celebration of NC W
Hello Junior Joeys, did
you know that clowning is
considered a form of acting?
Being an actor in a play at
school or for a community
center is just one way to
build on your character as a
clown. One of the Junior Joey
committee members did just
that! Read his story below.
ACTING to become a
better CLOWN
by Alex Zaprudsky
Shortz the Clown
Want to Boost Your
Clownin g Ski lls? There is a
fun , effec tive way to become
a better clown ... without eve r
ope ning the grease paint.
Clownin g is a category
und er the bro ad umb re lla of
performin g arts, and is closely
relate d to act ing. Chance s are
that if you are a goo d clown ,
you will make a goo d acto r
Alex perfo rmed in "Grease"
at his school.
(actres s) or vice versa.
I wea r the hats of both a
clow n and an actor. .. and
my talents have given me
the opportuniti es to act in
plays or get a birthday party
dependin g on who sees me. I
wi ll give you an exa mple of
my experience in the famous
musica l "GREASE! "
When one goes to aud ition
for a play, there is a form
ca lled an "auditi on shee t" that
asks for basic informatio n
such as name, age , height,
and con tact infor mation . Th e
for m also asks what kind s of
talents or abilities yo u have
that wou ld make yo u the
person to be cas t. Thi s is where
it helped me a lot. I wro te
that I am a talented singer,
actor, and I am a profess iona l
clown. The director wa s very
interested in the clowning. l
ended up getting cast as the
funn iest character in the play,
"Roge r" ... also known as
"Rump ".
To perfec t skit
performance s, take an acting
cla ss . Ma ny co mmuni ty
cen ters and loca l theaters offe r
classes that are affo rdable
and fun, as we ll.
These classes are
extreme ly benefic ial and give
you good skills such as tips
for performin g in front of
peop le, theat rica l voice ... how
to project, as we ll as stage
blocki ng, and more.
Take thi s into consi deration ,
and become a great perfor mer!
Sound like fun? Watchfor
your next school play auditions
and give it a tty. Leamin g
acting is definitely a great way
to help get you on your way to
better clowning! •
The board meeting was a
new experience for me and
r must say, our boa rd does
a wonderful job and a lot of
work !
The space we have for competition
s at this yea r's convention
are ju st wonderful and l
know yo u will be please d also.
J have the competition changes
for the 2007 convention and if
you have any questions please
feel free to email, Ctot s@aol.
co m or ca ll me 5 18-784 -2 127
with any que stions.
Face painting:
We have change d the criteria
for the Cheek and Full Face
as far as the "area (s)" to be
cove red. Using a pictur e of the
face from the COAi Clowning
IOI book, we have divided the
face into 4 quadrant s, using
one line vert ically down the
center of the face and another
line hori zontally across the
face go ing from the midd le of
the ea r,across the corner of the
eye, across the bridge of the
nose to the other side. (setting
a pair of glasses on yo ur model
will give yo u a goo d idea as to
the line below which the paint
must be in) Th is wi ll create 4
quad rants.
Quadrant s I and 2 will start
from the bridge of the nose,
corner of the eye to the forehead
hair line. Quadrant s 3
and 4 will be from the brid ge,
cent er of the nose, corn er of
the eye, middl e of the ear and
follow the j aw bone line to the
tip of the chin.
Excee din g any of the quadrant
s wi II automatica lly be a
disqualifi ca tion.
Metall ic, neon, lumi erier
and interfere nze paint will be
allowed. Sti ll NO glitter or
jewe ls.
Cheek Art: will have a 5
minut e time lim it. The design
must fit into and not exceed
either quadrant 3 or 4 not
both. No hand or arm s can be
used.
Full Face: wi ll have a I 0
minut e time limi t. The design
must fit (and not exceed) in at
leas t 3 of the 4 quadrant s (all 4
may be used)or be disqua lified.
Parade-abi lity:
Parade-ability will be held
outside rain or shine ! We
would have to work in these
co nditi ons and so to have th is a
learn ing experience, we will be
jud ged in them (If the wea ther
is dang ero us in any way we
will move inside after a
disc ussion with
the Coa,e mioa Di- ~- • .,
rector , Competi tion .____
_,
Director and Hosting Alley) .
The parade-abilit y will be
50 yards long, g iving adequate
time for the co mpetitor s to
perform their "b it" at least
three times for the judge s who
will be sca ttered throug h out
the spectators.
Even though this is a mask
style it would be judged as
a full face since the design
flow s over three quadrants.
( #!, #2 and #3.)
Sam.pie of a fu ll fa ce design
that uses all four quadrants.
In the Cheek Art you must keep the design within either the
third orfou rth quadrant. Note above: The design on the
left is acceptable while the design on the right would be
disqual(fied since it extends into the fi rst quadrant.
Looking For Convention Bids
Would you like to have
great instructors, interesting
workshops, compe titive
competit ions close by
so you could attend all
events? Has the expense of
transportation been holdin g
you back from attending a
Clowns of America lnt ' I,
Inc. convention? Have you
and your alley con sidered
hosting a COAi conve ntion?
How abo ut for 2009?
Th is may be the prefect
time to put a committee
together and research the
possibilities. Maybe there
is another club in the area
that would like to share the
expe rience with your alley.
For added help contact the
Convention and Visitors
Bureau.
What are some of the
things to consider?
• Location near an
airport and other forms of
transportation.
• Off-prop erty attractions,
restaurant s, and shopping.
• A hotel with a secured
area for exhibitors with a
Wed through Sat, 24-hour
hold.
• A hotel that can
accommodate several
classroo ms running
simultaneou sly and an area
for competit ions .
One problem that may
occur is that we are not a
huge group but we require
a lot of space. Also, we are
too large for some smaller
hotel propertie s.
Page 46
The New Calliope

An instructor r had in art
college made a huge impact
on my creative j ourney. He
always said, "When you finish
a painting and think there is
nothing you can improve upon,
then you have failed." I took
this to heart in every aspect
of my life. I believe you can
always learn even if you are
considered an expert. To stop
learning is to stop breathing
according to my way of
thinking.
Last year at the COAi
Convention we auctioned
the opportunity to be on the
cover of The New Calliope.
The funds would go into the
education fund.
Our winning bidders
Jennifer and Rachel bought the
cover to showcase their stepmom,
Miriam Kleinberger.
Forced to retire from clowning
in 2000, our cover photo
was taken in 1997. Miriam
has always been an avid
The New
Miriam Kleinberger
supporter of continuing clown
arts education since she got
involved in the arl form in the
early 90s. It's appropriate she
grace our cover on behalf of
the Education Fund Raising
Auction.
I also want to bring your
attention to our new classified
ads. As we grow and change
we start using new gadgets and
tricks. Wouldn't it be grand to
be able to sell those
you are not using
to someone else
who could use them? Or, if
you're like me and struggling
with the middle spread and
need to design and make a
new costume, maybe someone
would like to purchase your
old one. Then there are our
jun iors who continually grow
out of costumes. You can
recoup some of yours costs
by selling the old ones and
investing in new! T hope you
find it a great place to sell and/
or buy great clown stuff.
As the year comes to a
close I do remind everyone
to enj oy their holiday season.
Add a little holly to your clown
costume and maybe revise
a trick or two to reflect this
wonde1fu l season of goodw ill
toward men.
After all we are the
ambassadors of j oy. •
