Here's hoping that all
member s had an enjoya ble
and happenin g Internat ional
Clown Week. Spea king of
membe rs, they are the most
valuab le resou rce that any
membership organization
has. COAI would like to
have 6000 members on the
rolls by Dec 3 1, 2006. Can
we make it happen?
I was recently asked
what I thought might be
the simplest and most effec
tive way to introdu ce
peop le to the art of clowning
and bring new mem bers
into COAl. My answer is
simply ... "Host an introductory
clown class!" Thi s
can be done by any alley
and by any single memb er
or co uple of members who
have a knack for teachin g or
de monstratin g. COAI offers
a great educational resource
to support the effort. It's
ca lled Clowning 101. Copies
are available from the
business office. It is a clown
arts education program that
ca n be offered one day or
night a week for eight or
nine weeks, plus a make- up
lab and a graduation ceremony.
Basically, tensession
s to introdu ce interested
peop le to the pe,formin g art
of clowni ng. It can be presented
to one or two people
or it ca n be prese nted to a
co uple of dozen.
You don't need to go
to all the work of deve loping
yo ur own program.
The COAl members who
put Clowning 101 toget her
have done the majority of
the work for you. Wh en
yo u deve lop your registration
fee , be sure to include
an add itiona l $30 for the
COAi membership application.
Have your students fill
out a COA I app lication as
part of the class registration
proce ss. Send in the COA I
fee and the application to
the business office. Your
students will be memb ers
of COA i and rece ive their
new memb er welcome
packets befo re the conclusion
of your class sessions.
You introd uce new peopl e
to the art of clown ing and
you bring new members to
COAI ! You ca n pre sent at
least one class before the
end of the year .
Prese nting an introdu c
tory clown arts class make s
for a great alley project. If
you are not a member of an
alley, teac hing such a class
make s for both a rewarding
personal project and gives
you the opt ion of starting an
alley with the new clowns
you are workin g with.
Survey your area . If
there is not already an introductory
clown arts class
being taught somewh ere,
start your own. It can be
fun, rewardin g, spread s
the art of clowning in a
posi tive mann er and quickly
identifies new members
for COAL And, yo u will
find that teaching the art
of clownin g fosters your
own involvement in the art
and COAi. Where to teach
such a program? Your living
roo m. Your baseme nt.
The community room at
your loca l rec center. The
YMCA or YWCA. Your
loca l fire department. Your
loca l library. As part of the
youth mini stry progra m at
you r church, synagog ue or
house of wor ship . As part of
the adult mini stry
program in one
or all of the same places.
At your local elementary
school. At your loca l jun ior
high or high school. At yo ur
loca l com munit y college.
Any place where you have
150 square feet or more and
can move around comfo rtably
as you demonstrate the
performance skills your students
are deve loping.
I once heard that the
way to be a bette r perso n
was to take advantage of every
opportu nity that prese nts
itself. For those of us whose
introductory clown cla ss is a
year or two or more behind
us, there are many oppo rtunities
for continuin g clown
art s classes to keep us fre sh,
allow us to deve lop new
skills or explore new interests
and be involved.
Look at what is being
offered by some of the regiona
l groups this fall: The
Nat ional Clown Arts Project
which sponsors Clownfest
is celebrat ing its 25th edition
in Seaside Ht s, NJ Sept
I 3- 17; The Southeast Clow n
Associat ion convention is in
Atlanta , GA Sept 27-O ct I ;
The Texas Clown Assoc iation
convention is in Irving,
TX Sept 27-Oct I; The Midwest
Clown Assoc iation is
in Nort hbrook , IL Oct 4-8;
The Weste rn Regio n Association
Clown Conve ntion
is set for Phoenix , AZ Nov
5-9; and The Mid Atlantic
Clown Association is in
Harrisburg, PA Nov 8 - 12.
Eac h one of these groups
offers great educat ion programs
to hone your skills
and exp lore new possibilities.
They offer great
Children., Clowning
Maria 's Children International uses the arts as an initial connector with children
who live in compromi sed and difficult circumstan ces.
by Marilyne Gustafson
"Jello the Clown"
In 1995 Jan Thatcher
Adam s, M.D. traveled
wi th Dr. "Patch " Adam s to
Ru ss ia to c lown in orph anages,
hospitals, and nur sing
homes . Both are phys ician s
though not related. Whi le
there Dr. Jan met Mari
Yeliseyeva and her Mar ia's
Childr en Project.
Ma ria was enric hin g the
lives of children who were
orphaned, or tho se labe lled
menta lly deficient. In her
small tiny basement studio
with almos t not funding she
was enriching their lives
thr ough artwork. In 193 3
Maria had begun her work
with 13 or phans. C urrently
Int ernati ona l in 1999. New
created by Maria are still
in use . Dr. Jan is currently
pre sident of the board whil e
Dr. "Patc h" Adam s serves as
vice presi dent.
Mar ia's Children International
grew from an
arts rehab ilitation prog ram
deve loped by Maria in
Moscow. This inte rnational
nonprofit organization was
established to provide
funding for arts rehabilitation
program s that provide
soc ial, intellect ual, and
psycho logica l rehabilit ation
for disadva ntaged childr en
aro und the wor ld. It is their
miss ion to ensure that children
sufferin g in diffi cult
opportuni ty to succee d and
beco me produ ctive me m
and Artwork
Th e ch ildren in the program
study art com po sition,
grap hics, drama, cook ing
and mu sic. There is a psycholog
the children with e motion al
Editor Shobi Dabi of the
Hospital Clown Newsletter
wrote abo ut Maria and the
proje ct (Vol 4, No. 4) as did
Newsweek magazi ne (Jul y
24, 2000, p. 74). In addition
to the stunning artwork
the childr en have produced ,
they are also learni ng to
clow n in the orp hanages and
hosp itals.
The delight ful artwo rk
featur in g clowns is available
at a small ga llery in Savag e
MN (not far fro m the Mall
of America) or on their Web
site at www.maria schildr en.
com. The artwork includes
mura ls, paint ings, calendars ,
and cards. Th e ga llery is located
at 432 1 West Highway
13, Sava ge, MN 553 78. •
Editor 's Note: Maria 's
Children International is
also currently active in
Moscow, St. Petersburg, and
Dmitrov in Russia as well as
Las Cohabas, Haiti.
Creativity helps strengthen the knowledge of unique self
worth and abilities. Cards are printed, like the ones on this
page , using the children's artwo rk.
This is one of the ways Maria's Children International
raises funds to support the program.
One of the most important
pieces of info rmation
yo u ca n pass along about
yourself is your business
card. Here are some tips.
Don't Mix Working and
Clown ing
Your best adve rtisino
b
too l is being good at what
you do. But don' t ge t ca ught
in the trap of respondin g
to business quest ions when
clownin g. You are there to
clow n and if you answer a
quest ion about how much
you cha rge, when yo u are
avai lab le or what you can do
for yo ur clients yo u are not
doing your job of clow ning.
Hand your business ca rd
to the person aski ng you
all the question s. Reque st
that they give you a ca ll
later the n get back to doino
b
what it is you do ; clow n.
Now, when the per son ca lls,
they know you are a profe s
sional. They have seen yo u
at work and closing the sale
is a snap.
Business Card Etiquette
An import ant market
ing too l fo r your clown ino
. b
is your business card. It is a
tiny "billbo ard" - an adve r
tising method that captur es
a potential custome r's attention
and then exp lains,
in a few me morab le image s
and words, the services you
offe r.
Your business card has
the sa me time as a road side
billboard to catch attent ion.
Your advantag e is the cl i
ent ca n keep your billb oard
for futur e references. What
will motivate him or her to
remember then find yo ur
card ? What will entice them
to contact you and (hopefu l
ly) purcha se your services?
Here are some suoo
ges tion s as to what your
bus iness card should (and
should not) inc lude:
Your ca rd ...
••· should not be printed
on inferior quality paper.
... should not have incorrect
co ntact info rmatio n.
(Crossed out inform ation
on a business card looks
"t ac k Y " an d unprof ess ional.)
... should not have too
much information or be
difficult to read. Stick to 8
point or higher wit h your
type and fonts. A busy card
is hard to read . Chec k out
roadside bil lboard s. They
are large but contain small
amo unts of information.
Would your card look goo d
and be eas ily read if it were
along the interstate with
potentia l clients lookin o at it
. b
going 75 miles an hour?
... should not be too
dark of a color. Dark colors
inhibi t peop le from makino
• . b
notatio ns on yo ur card about
you or your business. Research
indicates that when
peop le can write notation s
on business card s, they are
more likely to retain them
and rememb er them when
they need you r services .
Your card ...
··· should highlight a
slogan, mission statement
'
or catc h-phra se, that sets
your busine ss apar t from
your competitor s.
•.. should be memorabl e
and (tastefull y) stand out
with its statem ents

Business Cards ... continued from page 9
Business Card Creative
You hand out your
clown card to a coworker
who ment ions he is planning
the school carn ival.
Does he slip it away and
forge t about it? Does he
show it to the com mjttee
beca use of his obligation
to you as a constituent? Or
does the card sell you?
If you haven't recently
(or ever) received a "Wow!"
or a doubl e take or had a
card rec ipient call peop le
over to look at your business
card then you are in
need of an extreme business
ca rd makeover.
A well-designed business
card will function as
a great business builder,
promoter and memento for
your clients. Change you r
card every two years or so.
Thi s will keep the informa
tion cun-ent and keep you
excited about giving them
away. A new card may
prompt a call from an old
client who has forgotte n
about your old card.
Unique or novelty
"business cards" can be a
powerful marketin g tool.
The novelty will reflect on
you and your business . The
appropr iate uniqueness will
make them more memo
rable. Remember if you
use novelty cards to always
have standard sized business
cards available.
Examples of Unique
Novelty Cards
• You do librar y shows?
You may want your business
card to be like a bookmark
(6 inches by 2.5 inches)
• A folded card with
important statements or
photo s printed inside can be
effective. You still present
a standard sized card, but
when opened , bountiful information
or impact can be
presented.
• Postcard sized can
have multip le applicatio ns.
The US Posta l Service accepts
regular sized cards
(Max imum size: 6 inches
long by 4-1/4 inches high)
for post of 24¢ each . Your
picture on one side with
your contact information
and writing space on the
other allows you to use
them for thank you notes,
reminder s, handout s or
autograph card s. Postcards
will more likely be placed
on the fridge than an 8x 10
photo. Postcards are about
as inexpe nsive as business
cards to produce.
• Die Cut ca rds are very
expe nsive but can be very
cool. If you are willing to
invest in these make sure
you have a solid design and
a marketing plan to follow
them up.
• Baseba ll card sized
business cards make great
premium s for kids or other
card collecto rs. Law enforcement
officers often
carry these to give away.
I carry thjs size business
card ju st to pull out when
work puts me with officers
who use these powe1fu l attractors.
Collec ting these
"Co p Card s" has filled five
Velveeta cheese boxes, with
two ju st for K9 officers.
• Ma gnetic cards are
easy to buy or make and
have a high retention rate.
• Clownin g is a visual
art. Photo cards quickl y
client exact ly what you offer.
Remember not to crowd
the photo. The picture
should showcase yo ur strongest
tool, you.
Remember, no matter
how coo l yo ur card is,
it does yo u no good if you
do n't give it away.
Business Card Keepers
There are seve ral
"tricks" to ensure your clients
will retain and use your
business card.
Resea rch indicates that
when peo ple can write notations
on business cards, they
are more like ly to reta in
them and remember them
when they need your services
.
• When hand ing out
a card, if time allows, use
your trusty Sharpie to make
a note on the card, eve n if it
is a mu sical note . Then say,
"Here's a little note fro m
me."
• Do not be afra id to use
both sides for information.
Mos t folks will only remember
one side and when
cards are stored, often only
one side will be displayed.
• Giving a business card
to a child will make them
feel very important. If you
maintain a Birthday Club,
you may wish to have cards
p1inted espec ially for your
members.
• The way you prese nt
your card influences its call
back power. Ma ny occasions
call for j ust pulli ng
yo ur card out of its holder.
But if you can produce the
card as the blow off to a
jo ke or magic trick the retention
facto r increases.
• For the longest time I
carried a snap purse with an
open bottom. When asked
for a card, the snap purse
was ope ned; my arm went
through and into my pocket,
pulling out the ca rd. •
Thi s isn' t regardin g
magic but thi s could be a
very imp ortant trick that
you may find helpfu l. Ho w
do you manage or organize
your contacts from previous
performan ce engage ments?
The answe rs may vary.
Some performers don 't need
to keep a database beca use
they have a man ager or
booking agent. Th is a1t icle
wi ll attempt to help the
average performer
who is intere sted
in man aging a
datab ase to attract
repeat customer s,
mainta in a log, and
ack now ledge benefactor s.
As a per former, as soo n
as a customer has expresse d
an interest in booki ng me, I
like to send out a flyer that
highlights what they ca n
expect. I never list my rates
as any thing ot her tha n "affordable
rate s" and provide
a co ntact numb er and ema il
addre ss for a price quote.
The key is to get yo ur nam e
in front of the custom er
as soon as poss ible afte r
co ntact. Many clients want
to hire a clown but have
no idea what to expect or
what it is they need . A little
information regardin g their
event and the who , what ,
when ,where and why will
help yo u get better organized
and equipp ed to hand le yo ur
business.
What is the best softwa
re? It is the one yo u are
most comfortabl e with and
are willing to upd ate.
I prefer
Microso ft Office because
there are enough book s out
there to help me when I get
stuck. Th ere is also Qu ick
Book s, Lotu s, Spreadsheet s
etc. Find out which one is
the most user-friendly for
you r needs.
Contact List:
In M icrosoft Exce l, I
keep two book s. Book 1 is
my contact inform ation ,
Book 2 is similar to an eve nt
summ ary. In Exce l, yo u can
name your column s, but the
beauty of this database is the
Sort key.
Book 1 Example:
Client,Contact, Event, Address,
City, State, Zipcode,
Tn#, Email, Charge, Tips
Client is the name of the
Contac t is the party I
The New Calliope

"Na ncy, teach me to
clown!" Karen smiled and
took a breath. "Co me back
next year and teach the orphans
to clown!" With a
smile that spread across her
face, Karen stepped closer
and hugged me. I' d ju st
finished my clown show that
with a few adju stments I'd
been doin g for yea rs. The
adjustments included not
speak ing which see med a
good so lution to my lack of
Spanish.
I was in Mexico, at
Casa de Paz Orphanage .
David and Karen Wilson
are the directors of this orphana
ge in the Baja. I don't
speak Spani sh so Sylvia, a
tran slator, supplied the voice
for my caterpillar pupp et
and the show had also bee n
adjusted to communi cate
that God does indeed have
a plan for our lives. But the
result of the show was the
same, I had turned into But
terfly the clown aga in. Then
I was join ed by the troup e
of clowns I'd trained back
home in Langley, Briti sh
Columbi a, Ca nada for so me
ju gg ling, dancing and silly
magic before we j umped
into a van and drove away,
allowing the orph ans to turn
their attention to the mar velous
art activity set out for
them.
That was last spring
- Sprin g Break 2005. I'd
go ne to Mexico with 48
people - children, teens
and adult s from my church,
North Langley Vineya rd
Christian Fellowship. Since
then I'd heard in my mind
over and over aga in those
words - "N ancy, teach me
to clown. Com e back next
year and teac h the orphans
to clown." Sprin g break
September/October 2006
came around and once again
we packed rented vans and
headed back across two international
borders to Casa
de Paz. This time in addition
to ten children and two
adult s who had bee n given
some quick clown training,
we were also bringing two
trunk s. One contain ed costumes
for the orphans. The
other trunk contained balloons,
pump s, face paints,
clown magic, feather dusters
and 50 clown noses.
Thanks to the members of
Skoo kum Chuckles Clown
Alley #379, members of the
communit y and my church
for helping me to fill the
trunk s.
The seven vans pull ed
into Casa de Paz's ground s
after 2 ½ days of travel.
The evening was spent
greeting old friends and getting
settled. The next morning
my troop of Canadi an
clowns practiced skills, got
the clown room organized
and prayed for the afternoon
sess ion with the orphans.
After lunch in the orphanage
dinin g hall, where
we had the privilege of eating
with the orphans and
staff, I grabbed my personal
clown gea r and raced for the
clown room .
Because none of us
spoke more than a few sentences
of Spanish this was
go ing to be clown workshops
by imitation. I was
grateful to see that Sylvia,
our wonderful translator
from last year, was present
again. I was expecting
about ten orph ans to choose
clowning, the other choices
were sports and dance . To
my surpri se more and more
orphans filled the room until
we had about 40 childr en
coun ting both the Mex ican
and Canadian children.
I bega n the workshop
with my Butterfly the clown
meta morphosis show or as
my friend Clare de Lune
likes to ca ll it - "metamor
pho-silly !" The children
laughed and hooted while
I figured out that I'm suppose
d to be a clown not a
docto r or a matado r. Then
they watc hed and shouted
as I put on my clown shirt
upside down, fell down putting
on my clown pants, put
on my clown shoe before
the sock and named colors
up a balloo n and some
help of Sylvia, I did a little
teaching on what clowns
are. Then we did some exercises
to practice moving
like clowns and deve lopin g
clown characte r.
Workshop #2 - The
next day I turned the teac h
ing over largely to my
Canadian team. These children
aged 9 to 15 worked
in tea ms with the Mexican
childr en teaching them balloon
tw isting, face paintin g
and ju gg ling.
Workshop #3 -- After
another brief teac hing session
we matched the costumes
we had brought with
the ten children who had
dec ided they were serious
about being clowns.
Since in Canada we
didn 't know what size the
chi ldren would be or the
number of boys and girls;
we had some surpri ses and
laughter. But soo n everyone
was smiling and please d
with their costumes . Nex t
we helped them with makeup.
Beca use of the age of
the children and the small
amo unt of time for training,
we had opted for simple
water-based clown faces.
And that was the end of the
tra ining. The next day was
the fiesta!
Thur sday, our last full
day at the orph anage was
here! After a fabulous lunch
of tamales we raced to get
on our costum es and help
the chjldren into theirs.
Invitation s had been delivered
to two poor nearby
villages and peop le were
already arriving ! Some
clow ns started face painting
while others started makjng
balloon anim als. Clowns
dusted the guests with silly
feather dusters at the gate
while others handed out
wrong - en espanol , hopelessly
wrong. This was followed
by being taught by
the children how to blow
Over the past few mon ths, the art of glitter tat s has been
cree pin g into the kits of face painter s. Thi s is so mething
that blends nice ly with that particular service.
To be hon est 1 strugg led w ith them at first but then
th roug h netwo rking I found so me easy tips for app lication
and now they are a stand ard in my kit.
Glitter tats are so mething that last for 3 to 7 days
and endure expos ure to wa ter. That makes them a grea t
alternative when it is hot or if you happen to be hired
to work at a party where sw imming is involved. I do
not recommend doing glitter tats on the face as they are
remove d with rubb ing alcohol (9 1 % works best). They are
perfect for the arm , shoulder, ankle, or back. Here is the
basic tec hniqu e and then a few exa mples. You ca n get as
elabo rate as you like with num ero us applicat ion s of co lor.
1he Supplies
Using the Lip gloss
applicator apply the glue
to the skin drawing a shape.
The glue is white and
will quickly dry clear but
maintain a tacky feel.
Poof the glitter over glue
( once it has dried tacky).
Other option is to dab the
glitter on with yourfinge1:
Brush away the glitter and the shape you have drawn with
yo ur glue will pop out all done in glitter!
Supplies include glue, glitter and cosmetic brush.
Best glues to use are those that are designed for the skin. I
have used Jim Howie's nose glue which works pretty good
with the.final glitter tat lasting about 3 days. Micha el Davy
glue is great as it is designed for use on the skin and I' m
finding that the glitter tats are lasting up to 7 days or more.
Pictured here is the glue in a lip gloss containe1:
The tip of the applicator is a great way to apply the glue. I
originally tried brushes and found they got sticky and hard
to work with when doing a gig.
The glitter needs to be fine and is often defined as ultra.fine
or micro.fine. I' ve also used glitter powders and they work
well giving a whole d(fferent look to the final result. Some
prefer working with poof bottles (shown above) however I
am finding that I prefer dabb ing the glitter on with
my finger uses less glitter and it doesn 't leave so much
extra glitter around your work area.
The cosemetic brush is a basic full, soft brush for dusting.
pictures that you "build" the colors one at a time.
I used orange for the backg round, white for the muzzle
and a microfine black glitter to add a little detail.
Here are a few other examples of the fun you can have with
glitter tats. For removal use 91 % alcohol.
NOTE : If you Lightly powder the area before doing the
glitter tat, it helps stop the excess glitter from sticking
to any persp iration that may be on the skin.
Palm Tree Hat
Level: Beginner/Intermediate
by Tim Laynor and Ann Sanders
Hawaiian luaus are a fun item and what better way to
"get into the party " than by creating palm tree hats for the
guests!
Place your thumbs inside
the loop - one at the knot
and the other at a point
opposite the knot. Twist the
upper portion forming two
equal size bubbles.
On the underside of each
loop, pinch off one third of
the loop to form a bubble.
Without releasing the
balloon, bring the ends
together. When the ends
meet, twist to form two
equal size loops.
Twist the bubble forming
the unerside of the leaf
and causing the top
to form an arc.
Fold the two loops, placing
one loop directly on top of
the othe1: Place your thumbs
inside the loops - one at
the joints and the other at
a point opposite the joints.
Pinch and hold; separating
the loops into four equal
bubbles.
September/October 2006
Using the balloon puff technique,
inflate a bubble at
the tail of a brown 260. Pull
the balloon puff through the
joints of the leaves locking it
in place. Pull the puff downward
forming a coconut.
With a marker add three
black spots to the end
of the coconut.
"Hello " I am David
"Dilly-Dally" Claunch. I am
the current vice president of
the Jubil ee Jesters - Alley
Beach, VA. I am learnjng
sign language at the Virginia
very informat ive while
being informal and a lot
of fun. M y teacher is deaf
and teaches not only the
mechanics of sign language,
but also a great deal about
the deaf community in
general.
Th is year, I offered
basic sign language
workshops at my home
alley, Virgin ia Alley #3 of
Richmond and Kolonia)
Klowns - Alley #357 of
Williamsburg. Thi s was
acco mpli shed through the
encouragement of clowns
like Spunky , Strawb erry
and Tuttles. I take thjs
opportunjty to publicly
thank eac h of these special
ladies and clowns for
their enco urageme nt and
suggest ion s. Tuttles is the
clown who encouraged this
article and dese rves special
thank s.
Like any skill, sign
language must be practiced.
The signs shown here are
basic and some are locall y
specific to Virg inia Beach.
As in many languages, loca l
diale cts are preva lent in sign
language. Eac h clown who
is looking to incorpora te
sign language into their
clowning needs to contact
their local com munit y
co llege or adult learning
ce nter and register for a
cla ss. They will teach you
all of the specific s to yo ur
local area. Some national
Web sites are listed here for
your reference . Thi s list is
not complete or exhaustive,
but rather offered as a
sample of what is available.
I have also included a
fingerspe lling Web site.
(See page 26 for pictures
of alphabet and numbers.)
Whil e signing is important,
fingerspelling is equa lly
important. Words that must
be fingerspelled are first and
last name s, street names,
restaurant s, and most
proper nouns. Adding sign
langu age to your clowning
will be a very rewar ding
experienc e. I have been
honor ed by clowning for the
deaf at a children's hospital
and at silent dinn ers. We all
know the sparkle in a child 's
eye when they see a clown .
That sparkle is magnified
exponentially when that
child is deaf and you speak
in their language.
Our alley (COAi Alley 391 - Talk of the Town Clowns) was established in Janua1y 2006.
With our participation in the local parades, we knew we wanted to display proudly two
anyone who sold a COAi flag . With some brainstorming ideas, we were able to
recreate the logo in a much larger image.
Alleys and Members On The Move!
The Poetry Corner
Some of our members
express their clown feelings
through poetry. Here are a
few selections ...
We slap on the greasepaint,
don red nose and wig
Rush to the Klown van -
we 're off to a gig!
Why do we do this? What
makes us go?
Is it time in the spotl ight?
The thrill of the show?
No
It's the child in the co rner
with tears in her eyes
Smiles come so seldom she
no longer tries
Our antics intr igue her;
eyes widen; she stares
And.for one prec ious moment
forgets all her cares
It's the f rail little lady whom
life has passed by
No one comes to visit. She
doesn't know why
She sits the re alone from
day into night
We show her some magic;
she beams with delight
It's the boy in the whee l
chair whose body has failed
Its sail never ho isted, his
ship has long sailed
His time le.ft is short, yet he
laug hs when he sees
These silly old Klowns so
eager to please
The joy and the sadness, the
hopes and the fears
Bring us to laughte r and
move us to tears
The tears are in private -
our pain never shows
Our job is to hide it so nobody
knows
So we go on our way, in foul
Ahoy Juni or Joe y
Mateys! Cap tain
Scutterbotch here, (also
known as Butt ersco tch)!
On Jul y 30'\ at the Orang e
Co unt y Fair in Or ange
Cou nty CA, Pirat es
ran sac ked the "Youth in
Motio n" buildin g, and
not ju st ANY Pirate s, but
CLOWN Pirat es!
While they were
ransack ing, they decided
to get up on stage and take
some class ic skits and make
them the ir own. That 's right,
class ic skits can be changed
and added to. That 's what
makes them so much fun!
I take responsibili ty fo r
the Clown Pirates, yes, I
am the Cap tain. We ca ll
ourselves the 4H Clown
Pirat es of the Barba ry West
Coast! We had so much fun!
We played music from the
first soundtra ck of "Pirat es
of the Ca ribbean" to start
off our show and then had
other pirat e music fro m the
Tuscany Pirate s, including
the first song "A Pirates
Lif e for Me" . Our audience
j oined in with us and
enjoyed our performan ce! It
ju st made the afternoon that
much more fun!
Durin g the practi ce of the
sk its, I explained how you
prese nt yourself on stage is
what makes or breaks the
skit. Your facia l movement,
look ing at the audi ence and
body lang uage port rays the
message yo u want to ge t
acro ss to the audience and
when yo u see the audience
laughin g yo u wan t to do
more to keep the prec ious
laughter goi ng ! You co uld
say as clown s we really like
to "ham " it up!
I wou ld like to explain
how we took a skit that we
have shared in the Juni or
Joey co lumn at one poi nt,
called, "Th e i nvisible
Be nch" and turned it into
a tota lly differen t, funn y
P irate skit. "The Invi sible
Bench" is abo ut how one
clown goes out, finds and
sits on an invisible bench
and three or more clow ns
follow in individu ally and
ask if they might sit down
too, wh ich they all
do until the last
clow n co mes out clean ing
and asks what they are
doing. The sitting clowns
all shou t toget her that they
are sitting on the invisible
bench. The last clow n looks
at them like they are crazy
and inform s them that it was
moved to the other side of
the room. This makes them
all fall down backwards
after they realize they are
sitting on noth ing.
The Pirate skit we called
"Hoi st the Invisible Anchor"
goes like this (by the way,
the 4H clow ns came up with
the idea changes , I thin k it
was a pretty good idea):
The capta in walk s up on
deck and looks aro und to
see that the invisible anchor
needs to be hoi sted. The
capta in calls a crew member
up (by name) and says
"Hoi st the invisible anchor!"
The crew memb er nervously
salutes the captain sayi ng
"Aye aye Captai n!" The
crew memb er starts to pull
away at an invisible anchor
with lots of effort to make
it look heavy. Anot her crew
memb er walks up and asks
what this mate y is doing.
The crew mem ber says,
"Hoi stin ' the invisible
anchor !" The aski ng crew
member says, "Do you need
some help?" "AYE!" says
the first one. Bo th crew
members are now pulling at
the invisible chain for the
invisible anchor, in unison.
A third crew mem ber wa lks
up to the two who are
hoisting the anchor and asks
them both what they are
doing. They both yell out
toge ther, "HOISTIN ' THE
INVISIBLE ANCHOR! "
The third crew member ask s
if they need help. "AYE!!"
They bot h yell, irritated
by being asked. The third
crew member get s behind
the seco nd and they all are
pulling the invisible chain
fo r the invisible anchor
together in uniso n.
A fou rth crew member
comes up on board and sees
the three crew members
pullin g away and asks
them all what they are
doing and they all yell
toget her, "HOISTIN' THE
INV ISIBLE ANCHOR! "
"Do you need some help?!"
The fourth crew member
asks. "AYE!!" says the three
who are pull ing away with
eve n more urgency. The
fo urth crew membe r gets
behind the three and starts
to pull at a heavy invisible
chain in unison. (At this
point you can stop or add a
member or two.)
The crew hoisting the
invisib le ancho r are pull ing
and conce ntrati ng so
much they don ' t see the
ca ptain walk up and ask
what they are all doing.
Looking dow n, they ye ll out
"WE ' RE HOI STIN' THE
INVISIBLE ANCHOR ,
WHAT'S IT TOYA??!"
The cap tain says rathe r
angri ly, "YA SCURVY SEA
DOGS!! THE INVISIBLE
ANCHOR IS ON THE
OTHER SIDE!" As they all
look up and see the captain
standing there, they all say
"Capta in??!!" with a look
of surpri se and fall down as
they let go of a chain that To", "Walk the Plank"
wasn't there.
and "Anchovie s, (anoth er
So You're Going To
A Clown Conference
~}
Members of The Heritage Clown Troupe and fr iends wait
fo r the ge neral sess ion to begin at the 2005 Show M e
Clowns for Jesus Na tional Confe rence.
by Cynt hia M. Pratt
You're exc ited, you've
made your rese rvat ions and
you're ready to pack. What
should you plan to take and
do to make your attendance
at the conference most
profit able fo r you? First of
all, determin e the type of
confere nce and why you
are attendin g. Will there be
competjtions? Will there be
a field trip ? Will there be a
parad e of participants? How
many breako ut sess ions will
you be attendin g? What are
your interests? Will there be
j am sess ions? Let's take a
look at eac h of these topics
in a little more detail to help
you plan to get the most out
of your trip.
1. Determine the type of
conference.
Is it a general or sec ular
confere nce? Eve ry clown
can ga in valuable skills at
any co nference. Eve n if you
clown solely in a mini stry
Page 36
venue, you can gain much
info rmation at a sec ular
conference. You have to be a
good clown before yo u ca n
be a good Christian clo wn.
If it is a Christian conference?
W ill you need yo ur
Bible fo r devotions and/o r
wo rship services? Pl an your
attire appropri ately.
Is it mini stry based?
Will there be part icipation
wo rkshop sess ions? Or, w ill
it be a lecture series? Maybe
both? You' ll need to know,
in order to plan how you
will take notes during the
classes . A noteboo k will be
indispensable, and maybe
eve n a mini -tape recorder.
2. Competition
Do you want to compete
in classes of make-up and
cos tum e? Are you skilled in
balloo n artist ry, or paradeability?
Or, do you love to
perfo rm in skits? Co mpet i
tions are an exce llent way
to help yo u strive to be your
best. Details w ill be found
in the conference broc hure
and registration fo rms and
on the Web site of the spo n
soring organiza tion.
Attending the co mpetitions
as an obse rver is a
good experience, even if
yo u choose not to compete.
Watching co mpetitions can
help understand the type of
clow n charac ters to choose
from or how a skill such as
balloo ning can be developed
at many different levels.
If yo u do dec ide to compete
make sure to take your
cos tume and make- up and
props, if you are co mpeting
in paradea bilit y or skits.
Make a list and check it
twice to be sure you don't
fo rget some thin g.
3. Field Trips
Some times a co nvention
will have field trip s to nursing
homes , parades, hospitals,
or communit y centers.
It's a great experience for
seaso ned and new clowns.
Seaso ned clowns often team
with First of May joeys
(brand new clowns) and
help them learn protocol
and specia l skjlls needed for
these types of perform ances
and ministry.
Aga in you' ll need to add
your cos tume and makeup
to your list and check it
twice !
4. Parades
Some co nferences encourage
participants to dress
up for a parade of states or
alleys (clow n c lubs) sometime
durin g the co nfere nce
schedule. Information will
be in the convention brochure
and/o r on the Web
site.
Find out ahead of time if
and/o r what prop s are considere
d appropriate to carry
or use durin g the para de.
You may also want to check
out how long the parade will
be if you know you can only
walk a certain distance .
If it's a go, be sure to take
your cos tume and make-up.
Make a list and .. . you know
the rest.
5. Break out sessions
Always plan to attend as
many as you can handle.
Mos t conferences will have
several workshops going on
at the sa me time . You will
Last Walk-Arounds
Let's take a few moments to remember our.fellow joeys who have left our presence, but not
our hearts ...
Melvin L. Scalf
"He's My Clown Angel Now!" Melvin passed away May 1, 2006 . He was a member of
the Colorado Clowns. He loved clowning participating from 1988 to 1999 when we moved
to Wyoming. He was a loving person who
loved to entertain children with magic and
make them laugh. I have lost my best friend
and soulmate of 21 years. If he were here
now he would say: "Go have fun and keep'm
laughing."
A Final Word from the Editor
Thank you to everyo ne
who has been sendin g in
news of their alley as we ll as
their own accomplishm ents.
How eve r I do need to share
one very important thing
- "rights of publi catio n."
Some of you took the
time to send me co pies
of magazine articles and
news paper articl es writt en
about yourse lf and/ or your
alley. Unfo rtun ately we do
not hold the rights on these
stori es so we can not pub lish
them. In the article on page
3 about Maria 's Ch ildren , I
received wr itten permi ssion
from the organization
to publi sh the ch ildren's
artwork. It 's the way of the
publi shing wo rld. W hat I
wou ld love to see is for you
to write about the ex perience
The New
of being interviewed and
going throug h the process
of hav ing the article written.
And abso lute ly share the fact
that so meone in the press
took note!! We want to hear
that! We ju st can't publish it.
On the sa me token [
wish to say thanks to Jerry
Becke r and Jud y Red u who
sent me thi s great pictur e of
a nebula that is light yea rs
from earth and you know
what...th ere was a very
stron g clown-type image in
the ce nter. So our frie nds
Jerry and Jud y had taken the
time to photocopy the pictu re
and draw the clown fac e on
it. I wish I co uld shar e it with
you but it was orig inally a
picture in a magaz ine and
som ething we don 't have the
right to publi sh.
The goo d
news is that
so many of yo u are being
recognized by your loca l
co mmuni ties as we ll as
rece iving some nation al
type cove rage. I, along
with all your fellow jo eys,
appl aud you r effort s and
commjttment to the art
of clow ning. It is a we lldese
rved pat on the back.
One last thin g I do need
to remind you. In the case of
digital photos we really need
the pictures to be taken at
the highest qualit y possible
on your camera. In the wor ld
of publi shing, we need the
added pixel s. Any que stion s,
give me or Tom a call.
In the meantime, hope
you are having a grea t
day !
