JFM enhances life in the Jewish community and beyond Annual Report 2017 In 2017, the Jewish Foundation of Manitoba awarded $1.4 million in grants to support important initiatives of Jewish organizations and organizations that serve Manitobans of all backgrounds. Here are just a few grant highlights from 2017. To see a full list of all grants awarded in 2017, turn to page 24. 4
BBG Week Empowering Teen Girls in the Community It was a busy week. It was an exciting week. Above all, it was an empowering week. For five days in May, BBG – the girls’ division of B’nai Brith Youth Organization (BBYO) – shone a light on community service, well-being, and Jewish identity. BBG Week was funded in large part by a $5,000 Women’s Endowment Fund grant from the Jewish Foundation of Manitoba. “The JFM has helped us achieve our goals for promoting teen leadership,” says Gayle Waxman, Executive Director of the Rady JCC, which oversees BBYO in Winnipeg. “BBG Week helped the girls see themselves in the context of our larger community. You can’t put a pricetag on that.” During BBG Week, the girls had a different program focus each day, including: mental health promotion; community service (with the girls making lunches for Main Street Project and writing letters to lone soldiers in Israel); and physical fitness. The signature event of the week was the Shabbat dinner where each girl was encouraged to bring a woman who has been a source of empowerment and guidance. “I brought my voice teacher and my sister brought our Mom,” says BBG Regional Board member Hannah Levit. “We sang, did Shabbat rituals, our whole Board spoke about empowerment, and we had a guest speaker about mental health. The grant from the Jewish Foundation was really important to us.” 5 Annual Report 2017
