Spring has Sprung – At Last!
My favourite time of year; the season of new shoots, promise of longer
days and warmer weather and flowers the colour of the sun.
In Ellington of course, it’s the run up to the biggest event in
our village life – Gala Season is here!
More information on the return of popular events and some
brand new ones inside. If you’re new to the village you’ll be
astonished at just how much there is to do – this is not just
any village fete, this is the Ellington Gala.

Website re-vamp and new Web Address
The existing Parish Council website will be
closed down on 31 May to make way for a new
website on 1st June. The reason for this is to
comply with new Data Protection regulations
coming into place in May and also to help
make it more secure.
The new web address will be:

Parish Council Elections and District Council Elections
By the time you are reading this, elections may
have already taken place in Ellington for 7 Parish
Councillors and one District Councillor.
Details of the results will be placed on the existing

on the Village Facebook page.

May 22nd Annual Assembly and May Meeting,
7.15 pm at the Village Hall
The May Parish Council Meeting and Annual
Assembly will be on Tuesday, May 22nd. This is later than usual to
accommodate training for new councillors and the Bank Holiday. The AGM will be preceded by
the Annual Assembly, which will start at 7.15 pm at the village hall. All welcome to attend.

Ellington Playing Field Associatio n
Did you know our playing field
is not council-run?
In fact, this fantastic community
resource is on private land leased
to the village for a token rent.
The playing field was born in
1984 with the aim of providing a
safe, stimulating environment for
residents of all ages.
The Ellington Playing Field
Association (EPFA) are a group
of volunteers who manage,
maintain and update the field and
its equipment. This summer, the
EPFA secured various grants to
help fund installation of a spacious
shelter, which has been very well
received.
The association hosts many
events throughout the year to
raise funds for these exciting
improvements, as well as general
maintenance. At Christmas they

Ellington Village Club
The village club is situated in the village hall and welcomes all residents and their guests from
Ellington and Ellington Thorpe. Although a members’ only club membership can be from as
little as 25p for one visit, £2 for a year, £5 for 3 years or life membership for £10. It is run by a
volunteer committee and bar helpers with the bar opening several times each week plus social
events (usually on a Saturday) throughout the year.
The bar stocks draft bitter, Guiness and lager with all the usual spirits, wines and soft drinks as
well as crisps, sweets and coffee. There is a pool table, darts, cards, dominoes, TV and free wi-fi.
Over the year we organise pool, darts, dominoes and nap competitions.

Friday 20.00 to 23.00 (Bingo 20.00-21.00)
Sunday 13.00 to 14.30
We have a social event most months except over the summer period.
Coming up in the autumn we have –
22 September Fish and Chip Supper with a film

We are also looking at a trip to Peterborough Greyhound Races and are already thinking about a
Christmas do.

Ellington Village Hall 100 Club
The 100 club raises funds for the upkeep of the village hall and costs £10 every 6 months. Just
over half the income is paid out in cash prizes with the balance of £900 per year helping to run
the village hall.
New members are always welcome and whilst we have a short waiting list at the moment having a
list of people waiting to join is extremely helpful.

Helping your local church
before and after you die
In the popular imagination local churches are funded and maintained by national and diocesan
structures but the reality
is that there is no central
funding available to parishes
from “the centre”. All the
costs of running a church
and engaging in mission
and ministry must be met
locally. In our parish that
amounts to £1700 per week
for the churches in Brampton,
Ellington and Grafham. This
money is raised through
regular donations, one-off
gifts and fundraising events.
I would like to express my
gratitude to all of you who

church would quite literally
not be possible without you!

The Parish Giving Scheme
is a direct debit scheme that
we now use to receive regular
giving, plus gift aid where applicable, from donors who wish to commit to supporting their local
church. You can choose to remain anonymous if you wish and also have the option to increase
your giving in line with inflation each year. This scheme forms the backbone of our income and is
administered by the Diocese of Gloucester, at no cost to us, on our behalf.

The traditional shoot at High Harthay near
Brampton Hut. You can sign up via the form
in the Mermaid and pay for your entry at the
same time.
Saturday 9th June - Car Treasure Hunt
A Pub to Pub road trip! Starting from a local
hostelry outside the village between 4pm –
5.30pm, teams will follow clues and questions
on a trip around the area which should take
1 ½ to 2 hours. There will be a short part on
foot in the middle before coming back to the
village and meeting at the Mermaid garden for a BBQ (cost of £5 per person), drinks and
prize giving. If wet, we will use the village hall as the pub will be accommodating
diners that evening.
Saturday/Sunday 16th- 17th June
Scarecrow Competition
In the weekend before the Gala we will
invite you to display your Scarecrow
created to the theme of Weddings,
which is being kindly sponsored by the
Mermaid. These will be judged on Sunday
17th from 2pm with winners announced
on Gala Day.
Friday 22nd June in the evening
Gala Weekend festivities start with the
traditional Boules for children then
adults on the Green. Always a popular
and hard-fought contest, we will have
a BBQ and Bar running until late. The pitch isn’t exactly
competition standard but it all adds to the fun and means novices and more experienced players
have an even chance of winning.

NEW: Ellington’s Got Talent.
Can you sing, dance, tell a joke or play a musical instrument? All welcome from toddlers
to octogenarians and all family friendly talents you can show off in the ring are fine - but
everyone has a strict time limit of two minutes.
With many stalls – including a chocolate tombola - and lots of events in the ring we will
finish late afternoon before everyone reconvenes with their chairs and tables for an evening
party. We ask that you don’t reserve any spaces in the Marquees until 6pm at the earliest
please.

finish!

with a Gala Service on the Church on Sunday evening.
What is the Gala for?
The funds we raise are distributed to local groups - the Village Reserve Fund, Playing Field
Committee, Village Hall, and Ellington Church.
This fun and inclusive village event for all the family, is run by a small volunteer committee
group with many helpers. We couldn’t do it without everyone doing their bit.
We have various pieces of equipment
for hire at reasonable rates all year.

Machine, PA System, Till and folding

We have had an incredibly long, cold and wet winter so cheer yourself up and come along to the
WI. We meet on the first Tuesday of the month at 7.30pm in the village hall and our meetings are
varied and interesting.

On April 3rd Geoff Lambert came along with his faithful dog to talk about dogs supporting people
with long term health issues like diabetes and epilepsy. It was fascinating hearing how dogs
can be trained to detect when their owner is likely to lapse into a
hypoglycaemic coma or have an epileptic fit.
On May 1st we will discuss the
resolution, “how mental health should
have parity with physical health”. It will
then be carried forward to the NFWI in
June. After this discussion, Mike Baker
will talk about The Duke of Edinburgh
Award scheme.
June 5th we will have a walk at Paxton Pits
followed by a Chinese meal at Long Yuen
Court Little Paxton. Hopefully the weather
will be kind to us and we can enjoy a lovely
evening.
Our meetings are varied and we try hard to cater for everyone. I do hope that you are tempted,
there is no compulsion to join, and we would make you very welcome.
