Looking for the newest “stuff ” at our library? Sign up for WOWBRARY. Get a free weekly email alert with all the new items added during the week. Link immediately to the library catalog to place a hold and never miss a great new book, DVD, music CD or audio book on CD! A link to the sign up for Wowbrary is on the library’s webpage. https:// www.hopedale-ma.gov/bancroftmemorial-library Magazines are now available through C/WMARS Over- Drive! Our first wave of 50 magazines is available in the C/ WMARS OverDrive catalog – later this year the collection will grow to 100 magazines. You can access them through the Libby app or the OverDrive app. They can be read online or downloaded for offline reading. Check out is for 7, 14, or 21 days. The magazines are all purchased under a “simultaneous use” agreement. This means every magazine is always available. There’s no waiting. If someone wants to read a magazine, they can. All you need is a library card and access to the internet. What happening with E-Books and E-Audio? Library users are wondering what happened to AXIS 360? Unfortunately, this e-book and e- audio collection has ended. However, C/WMARS has joined with 5 other consortium groups to share their digital collections. When you sign into Libby or Overdrive, you can browse and borrow from neighboring CLAMS, Minuteman Library Network, NOBLE, OCLN and SAILS Library Network through our reciprocal lending program. You will need to sign into each collection separately and you can place holds on any of the items you want. If you need help, stop by the library for additional information. Special Display: Lightship Baskets of Nantucket Our thanks to Patrick Giles and Tim Symonds for the interesting display of their handmade Lightship Baskets and other types of hand crafted baskets. The display features some of the materials used to make the Lightship Baskets and information about these special baskets. The display case is beside the main circulation desk. Ongoing Monthly Library Events Helen Symonds Book Group The Helen Symonds Book Group meets in the Library Program Room at 1:00 PM on the first Wednesday of every month. Everyone is welcome to join the group. Please call the library at (508) 634-2209 to request a copy of the book and come join the discussion. This month’s meeting will be Wednesday, September 5th at 1:00 PM. The group will discuss two short books by Elizabeth Strout: My Name is Lucy Barton and Anything is Possible. The next meeting will be Wednesday, October 3 at 1:00 PM. The book will be The Hush by John Hart. Building on the world first seen in Hart’s book The Last Child, it features Johnny Merrimon 10 years later. Spooky things happen in the “Hush”. CookBook Club They can be hot or cold, sweet or spicy. Great with fruit, veggies, chips, crackers or bread. They can be an appetizer or a whole meal if you prefer. I’m talking about the ever wonderful DIP! Everything tastes better with a little dip! Please join us on Monday, Sept. 24th at 6:30pm when the Cookbook Club will be sharing our favorite dip recipes. Dip, salsa or spread! It can be a recipe that has been enjoyed in the past or a new recipe to try out on friends. If you need new ideas various cookbooks will be available at the library for use. Wednesday Knitting & Crocheting Group Have you been knitting for a while but want to spend time with other crafters? Do you have a project that has been waiting for you to “get around to it? “Join the Knovel Knitters in the Trustee Room for an evening of knitting & crocheting every Wednesday night from 6:00pm until 7:45pm. Friends of the Hopedale Library September Event The Friends of the Hopedale Library are pleased to present “General Stores” by Ted Reinstein on Wednesday, September 26th. The program will start at 6:30 pm. Books will be available for purchase. The general store, as old as America itself, harkens back to a simpler time and a more innocent and rural nation. The general store conjures a country-like place where kids come in to by penny candy, and adults to buy everything from swaths of fabric, to fresh vegetables, to fourpenny nails. The general store was the vital and inviting heart of a community, where everyone not only knew your name, but how you took that coffee, how many kids you had, and how’s your dad doing, anyway? And in tough times, it was a place that often treated customers like family, extending credit when no one else would. The general store was real-life Norman Rockwell— deeply woven into America’s cultural identity, an integral part of the nation’s self-portrait from its earliest days. Fact is, the general store is still very much here, and very much in business. What’s more, like the diner, it has seen resurgence. In some places, it is even being reimagined for a new era. Ted Reinstein has been a reporter for “Chronicle,” WCVB-TV/Boston’s awardwinning—and America’s longest-running, locally-produced—nightly news magazine since 1997. In addition, he is a regular contributor for the station’s political roundtable show and writes a weekly opinion column. He lives just west of Boston with his wife and two daughters. He is the author of Globe Pequot’s New England Notebook and Wicked Pissed: New England’s Most Famous Feuds. There is no charge for this program. To reserve your spot please call 508-634-2209 or stop by the library during operating hours. The Friends of the Hopedale Library meetings are usually held on the first Tuesday morning of each month. However, the September meeting will be on September 18 at 10:00 am in the Library Reference Room. Anyone interested in helping the Library and planning our adult programming is welcome and encouraged to join them. The Friends of the Hopedale Library was founded in 1983. They work with the Library staff and Trustees to support the Library by providing funds for equipment, materials and programs not covered by the regular operating budget. They offer adult events September- June, pay for the children’s summer reading and for other programs. New members are always welcome! News from the Marjorie Hattersley Children’s Room “Libraries Rock!” our Summer 2018 reading program was both educational and fun for our library patrons. Among our many excellent events were: “Rock the Library” Music and Magic Show presented by Debbie and Tom O’Carroll; Science Tellers’ Wild West; Wingmasters’ Birds of Prey; Farmer Minor and His Reading Pig, Daisy; Lindsay and her Puppet Pals; and the World of Harry Potter 3D, all funded by the Friends of the Hopedale Library. Hopedale Cultural Council generously funded Ed the Wizard’s Alchemy Laboratory and Hampstead Players presentation of “Treasure Island”. The Boston Museum of Science also generously funded the very educational Inflatable Planetarium with a program about “The Night Sky.” Twenty-five of our young patrons, and 8 wonderful helpers took part in a week-long Theatre Camp under the direction of Mrs. Kraimer, presenting “Snow White” to the delight of their families. Karina James, Dolores Russell, Kathy Kavanough all shared their talents with us in a variety of programs for all ages. Our summer reading theme and promotional materials were made possible by the Boston Bruins, Massachusetts Library system and the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners. September Events: Storytimes will resume in September. Once upon a Storytime for children 3 to 6 years old: Tuesdays at 3:15pm, beginning September 11 and continuing thru Oct. 16. This hour program will include stories, puppets, music and crafts. Wonderful Wednesday Storytime for kindergarten and up: Wednesdays at 3:15pm, beginning September 11 and continuing thru October 16. This hour program will include stories, puppets, music and crafts. Preschool Storytime for children, age 2 to 4 years: Thursdays at 11am, beginning on September 13 and continuing thru October 18. This 45 minute program will include stories, fingerplays, puppets, nursery rhymes and music. Registration is requested. “Check It Out!” Reading Challenge Be on the lookout for information about our annual “Check It Out!” program, when students in grades K - 3 will have a chance to earn points for their class when they visit the Library during October.
