going on around the city to help and inspire you
with your project.
PROJECT IDEAS
— Can Issues such as growing inequality and
homelessness coexist with Manchester’s ambitious
future and still be considered a powerhouse?
— How important are digital and creative industries
to Manchester?
— What features of Manchester justify its reputation
as the Northern Powerhouse?
— How can students help in the fight against
homelessness?
We want you to be creative and pick any platform
that you think answers the question the
best. Some potential project ideas may be:
Produce a blog on how students can get involved
in fighting homelessness. You could even
volunteer and blog your personal experiences
doing this.
— Make a poster on Manchester’s digital and
creative industries.
— Create a podcast about the positives and negatives
of the Northern Powerhouse.
— Produce a blog about whether Manchester is
the Northern Powerhouse
The digital and creative
industries have benefitted
from the Northern
Powerhouse using
Manchester’s deep –
rooted history as an
industrial city.
Welcome to Digital Manchester
In this section, you will get a chance to look
at some of Manchester’s biggest and growing
digital companies.
The digital and creative industries have benefitted
from the Northern Powerhouse using
Manchester’s deep – rooted history as an industrial
city. The city’s digital community expected
to create 23,000 jobs over the next decade and
across Manchester’s three universities, there
are 7,200 creative/media students and an additional
6,000 students in computer – based studies.
With skyrocketing rent prices in London,
Manchester is becoming a lucrative alternative
for many Media and computing graduates as
Social Media plays an ever – increasing role in
marketing and our lives.
Listen to this podcast where Richard Eskins
talks about Manchester Met’s links with digital
and creative industries and why it is an exciting
time to work in Manchester at the moment.
Richard Eskins, senior lecturer in the department
of Information and Communications.
From Granada TV to Media City
A waterfront destination with digital creativity,
learning and leisure at its heart, Media City is
home to BBC, ITV, Dock 10, The Lowry, Coronation
Street and the Imperial War Museum.
The Conservative government announced it
would invest £78M into Manchester’s creative
economy in 2016’s Autumn statement. The cornerstone
of plans for the ‘northern powerhouse’
is a development known as the Factory. The
Factory will be an artist led, creative hub on a
site west of the City Centre that was once home
to Coronation Street.
The project has been deemed a success by many
and has helped transform the landscape and
skyline of Salford. The project which started
construction in 2007, won the 2015 award for
best Regeneration Project of the Year at the
MIPIM awards and millions continue to be invested
in this project.
Manchester as a Northern Fashion Capital
Manchester has also developed an increasing
fashion industry in recent years. It is home to
brands such as Misguided, which saw its revenue
rise to £55M last year and includes fans
such as Ellie Goulding, Nicole Scherzinger and
Taylor Swift. Other companies such as BooHoo
and PrettyLittleThing have also seen continu-
ous growth and have become staples of high
street fashion.
Manchester is also a forefront for high-end fashion
with up and coming designers such as Manchester
Met’s own Nabil El – Nayal, who recently
designed a piece especially for international
chart – topper Lorde’s Melodrama World Tour.
Fashion is just another example of Manchester’s
booming and fast-growing creative industries.
Homelessness in Manchester
Homelessness is a serious issue across the
whole country but in Manchester it seems to be
an ever-growing problem facing the city. With
over 3,200 people being homeless or in temporary
accommodation (an estimated 1 in 146
people), Manchester has the largest homeless
population outside of London. In Salford alone,
there are over 325 homeless people. Homelessness
in Manchester has increased 13-fold since
2010 when the Conservative Government announced
a number or austerity measures including
cuts to housing programs and wages, forcing
many people onto the street. Andy Burnham,
the Greater Manchester mayor prioritised battling
homelessness as one of his key pledges
in his manifesto.
It does however raise the question of whether
or not Manchester can truly claim to be the
Northern Powerhouse. Whilst there are booming
industries and millions being invested into the
city, there is a dark underbelly. People are being
forced to sleep on the streets in harsh weather
conditions and these numbers are increasing
year on year. Is Manchester a Northern Powerhouse
or does it need to resolve its increasing
socio-economic problems first?
