TIE The that binds the church & home together
From the Pastor
On Saturday, August 18 we gathered in the fellowship hall of the CEB on a mission.
The place where we gather to eat with one another was transformed into a ministry
hub with tables stacked with containers of rice and soy, dried vegetables and
vitamin packets. Volunteers gathered around the tables to put together bags of
ingredients. They were then weighed and sealed and packaged, ready to be sent to
Haiti through Rise Against Hunger.
As we worked, I was amazed by the way that in less than two hours we were able to
prepare food for over 10,000 meals. I was delighted to see adults and children of all
ages with hairnets and plastic gloves measuring out rice, moving bags from table to
table, and packaging the meals into cardboard boxes. Linda Fletcher worked
tirelessly to organize this event through our Missions Team and Women on
Mission. After we were done, we vacuumed, restacked chairs and tables, and shared
lunch together, thankful for the opportunity to serve as a church family.
Earlier in August we gathered school supplies for one of our local elementary
schools. Quarles Elementary received glue sticks, pencils, and boxes of new
crayons through your generosity. And for over a month we have been collecting
bags upon bags of toiletries and towels, filled by our church and other churches in
our association, to benefit the migrant workers that come to our community each
year. It is such a joy and privilege to serve at a church that seeks to serve our
community and our world in both small and large ways—whether it is glue sticks,
deodorant bars, or 10,000 meals!
In an article a few years ago, Dan Hotchkiss wrote, “Some [congregations] have
found it fruitful to reframe their social mission from “We serve the needy,” to “We
transform our members into Christian disciples who live lives of service.” It is a
small but important shift…Congregations can and do make a difference to the lives
of those they help through the outreach ministries they sponsor. But they make an
even greater difference in the lives of their own members.” (From “What is the
Mission of Missions?” Clergy Journal, September 2006.)
We engage in missions at First Baptist for a lot of wonderful reasons. We believe
that in serving others we are serving Christ. We believe that as those who have been
blessed, we have been called to become a blessing. We believe that each person is
given gifts that can be used to serve and glorify God. But that isn’t all. We also serve
our community and our world, our neighbors near and far, because we have learned
that in doing so sometimes the lives that are transformed the most are our own.
God Bless You!
Youth Ministry
New Rhythms
As summer comes to a close, most of us are beginning new rhythms. School-age students are going back to
school. College students are returning back to campus. Many people are fitting their last vacation days in and ready
to get back to a normal schedule before the season of holidays and snow storms. I really like these transitions
because they fill me with hopes of what is to be.
On the first day of school for both city and county schools, I welcomed hundreds of middle schoolers back to
school at Frederick County Middle School and at Daniel Morgan Intermediate School as part of the non-profit
Bright Future’s welcome back to school events. The rising 5 th and 6 th graders looked especially hopeful about the
new school year. I’m hoping you will continue praying for ALL students in our city and county.
We will also be starting new rhythms again as a church family. In September we return to our scheduled
Wednesday night activities. For student ministry this is the highlight of our week. It offers everyone a time to
recharge spiritually in the middle of the week, to be reminded of God’s love, and to deepen relationships with one
another.
This fall will include mission opportunities one Wednesday each month. In the past we have served at Bright
Futures and hope to do so again this fall. I’m also excited to announce that in the month of October the girls in
our group will have a special study with leaders from the Laurel Center called “Valorous Voices.” This series will
focus on empowering young women and discuss setting boundaries in life and relationships. The guys will hear
from different men in the church about their work, life, and faith.
As we settle into new rhythms we remain grateful for God’s steadiness through past seasons and for God’s
steadiness in the days ahead.
-Kyle
Lori’s “Grace Notes”
“I will sing of the Lord’s love forever; with my mouth I will make your faithfulness known through all
generations.” Psalm 89:1
Page 3
The Singin’ Seniors led beautifully in worship this summer! We had fun with the baseball themed sermon series
and I managed to find anthems to match! As the Fall approaches, the Chancel Choir returns to lead the services.
We continue our tradition with having our choirs lead every Sunday of the calendar year. These faithful singers
tithe their talents and their time. Many hours of preparation go into rehearsals. Our choirs are vital to the life of
our church and ministry. Here are 3 reminders of the wonderful ministry of our choirs:
Joining a choir is an opportunity for involvement. A church’s ministry is only as effective as the congregation
members who choose to get involved and share of themselves. When you join the choir, you’re not just singing
notes together, you are sharing life and ministry together!
The choir is an extension of the pulpit. The choir can take on a pastoral role by singing prepared pieces which can
echo the sermon of the day. It may speak to someone in a way that only music can!
The choir is a reflection of heaven. Isaiah 6:3 gives us a glimpse into God’s throne with angels singing together,
“Holy, Holy, Holy is the Lord God Almighty; the whole earth is full of his glory!” In Revelation, John paints a
picture of a heavenly choir that sings God’s praises forever.
When we see and hear our brothers and sisters in Christ singing in harmony of voice and spirit, we can be
transported momentarily to feel closer to God. The choir is made up of all kinds of different people with a variety
of backgrounds, ages and experiences, which is also a reflection of heaven. God’s people, of every age and every
race, worshipping together as one body of believers!
FBC Kids
It has now been over a month since our Sunday morning programming was displaced due to water damage and
repair in the CEB.
Thank you to the Word class for giving up your space to create a nursery in the Sanctuary building! Thank you to
all of our volunteers who remained flexible! And thank you to parents for your patience and understanding! It was
important to take the time with the clean up and repairs, giving our children a safe space to learn about God.
September 23rd at 12:15 all parents are welcome and encouraged to attend a parents luncheon! You will receive a
calendar and information about the events we have planned for this school year. Later that afternoon we will
gather again at 4:00 PM for our first Special Kid’s Worship of the school year.
Be on the lookout for upcoming dates for a new program called “Talk and Play” (parents talk while kids play). We
will be meeting at different spaces around town and growing in friendship together!
Keep checking your email & the church bulletin for our upcoming events! We have even added a Parents Night
out to December so that parents can get some Christmas shopping done!
Look forward to so much fun this fall! - Alison

Ask Kathy
Kathy, please explain the role of our Fellowship Fund and how it functions.
The Fellowship Fund is a program designed to help families in need with rental assistance, help paying a utility
bill, and access to our food pantry. Funds for this program are provided by our church members (thank you all
very much!). Food items are purchased for a very nominal cost through our local Blue Ridge Area Food Bank and
many items are free. For example, the week of August 20 we purchased three varieties of fresh salad greens,
breaded whole grain chicken strips and frozen whole chickens for an amazing $3! Several months ago we applied
for and were granted a brand new upright freezer. This freezer currently resides in the CEB at the rear of our
fellowship hall. Our food pantry is available to anyone in need. We serve those with appointments each
Wednesday as well as anyone who calls our office and requests help. We are thankful to all those who have made
this program possible.
“Son”Shine Learning Center
Conversations about School
( Home & School-July 2018)
We are so excited to open another fantastic school year at ‘Son” Shine Learning Center on 9/4/18. Please read
on for some fun conversations starters about school:
When you think of parent involvement, do you picture moms and dads volunteering in classrooms? That’s one
way to help-but research shows that supporting your child’s education at home is even more important. Here are
conversation starters that will help you stay involved.
“Let’s see what you brought home.”
Look at completed work to find out what your youngster is learning and how well he/she is doing. You could
compliment on her math work or social studies project, for instance. (‘You know a lot about our state’s history!)
Also, respond to notes from his/her teachers, and sign her weekly folder or daily planner if required.
“Show me what you have for homework.”
It’s your child’s job to do his/her homework, but you play a role, too. By having your child explain what is
needed, he/she will understand what is required. After he/she finishes his/her homework, glance over the work
to see if it’s complete. Often, homework is a great indicator to the teacher if the child understands the material.
“Describe a book you enjoyed today.”
This gives you an idea of what your youngster prefers to read. Then, build a daily reading habit by asking what
they’d like to read tonight. Encourage their reading and listening skills by reading aloud to her and letting your
youngster read to you.
“Tell me what you learned that you’d like to know more about.”
Use his/her interests as jumping-off points for activities to share. If your youngster is fascinated by how animals
adapt to winter, take your child to the library to research the subject or to the zoo to see live animals.
After school questions
Asking “How was school today?” might not get you far. Instead, ask questions like these for a better picture of
your youngster’s day:
What’s the coolest thing that happened? What wasn’t so cool?
“Pretend you’re the teacher” How would you describe the day?”
“What made you laugh?
“What was the most creative thing you did?”
“How were you kind or helpful today?” Was anyone kind or helpful to you?”
