SEPTEMBER & OCTOBER 2018 Letter to the Membership Reflecting on the past, present and future of the MAC I have many memories about the MAC throughout the years. I'd like to take this opportunity to reflect on the past and look forward to the future MAC. When I first started working at the club, Elvis was still alive. His passing was of course a big deal and I found out because Members and staff passed the word around verbally. At that time in the athletic department, we had one small TV tucked in the corner— no radio and of course, no internet or cell phones. Members just talked to each other. You could work-out, grab dinner or a drink anywhere but it was special to be at your club with your friends. That part really hasn’t changed. What does change is the world around us. (BTW – For anyone who didn’t just look up the year on their phones, Elvis died in 1977.) I do reflect on what makes belonging to a private Club special and important. It’s partly the camaraderie and friendships you make with Members and staff. It’s partly being your home away from home. It’s in many respects your family away from home. You come to your Club to eat, drink and play with your friends. I know of many of you who have grown up together at the MAC from your first toddler swim in the pool, to marriage, and then bringing your kids down for the same experiences. I've also seen brand new Members welcomed into that culture becoming part of the MAC family rather quickly. The MAC building as we know it will be going through some long, needed upgrades. It’s an exciting time for everyone. From a staff perspective, it may be even more important to us. I speak for many employees in saying our mission has always been and will continue to be making your MAC experience as enjoyable as possible. Personally I get a bigger kick out of making some Members day by a small consideration rather than doing something for myself. That is an attitude shared by many MAC employees. The challenges presented by our old building have made doing that much more difficult. Moving into a brand new building will allow us to do what we do best: serve the Members and have fun doing it. My final reflection is on what the Club was, is and what it will be. Going back to when I started in 1977 and having been here 41 years, I think about those early years. The Club was in the middle of the Great Depression. We got through it and strived. What will we be like 10 years from now? I have no doubt we’ll still offer a Club that is special and important to our members. In what will be a relatively short period of time within that time frame we’ll be in a newly renovated club. I also foresee a conversation among old timers talking about the time we had an interim space and because they retained or joined then they got locked into Legacy Rates. Members who have joined after renovation will just grumble about how lucky those members were to be a member in 2018/19. The MAC will be the MAC no matter where it is. Retain your membership, invite past members to rejoin and invite prospects to join now. Login to thenewmac.org and let us know you are in and who you are bringing with you. The opportunity is now and the future is certain. We will be the top private Club in the city not just for the facilities but because of you, our Members.
