I’M IN is a system level solu7on to the diversity challenge facing the
music sector
The effects of inequality can be seen across society. In business and the arts there is a
renewed focus on challenging this inequality by increasing diversity and inclusion
amongst the workforce and beyond. The classical music industry, where LMM has been
an advocate for change for 10 years, has struggled to address the lack of diversity both on
stage and within its leadership. StaCsCcs for the UK music industry reveal that:
• 1.7% of Bri+sh orchestral players have black heritage (Scharff, 2014)
• 2.4% of ar+s+c directors of Bri+sh orchestras are women (Mc-Clure 2014)
• 74% of children from AB backgrounds have had instrumental lessons compared with…
55% of children from social grades C1 and DE (ABRSM, 2014)
This lack of diversity from the earliest stages of formal music educaCon to the very top of
the industry is a significant limiCng factor in the growth, creaCvity and innovaCon of the
sector.
