June/July 2018 Taking AmSoc to the Next Level by Ariane Cartwright Last month we held AmSoc’s best Gala yet, celebrating in the style of the Roaring Twenties and fundraising for some very noble causes. This fantastic event was thanks to some very special volunteers, many of whom are featured in this month’s FORUM, and to our Gala Chairs: Ruth Hollard, Judy Zanchi, and Vanessa Short. I can’t express how grateful I am to these three women and the entire Gala Committee for the outstanding leadership and organizational skills they showed in creating our Gala this year. A special thanks to our miracle working Gala team leaders: Debbie Watson, Colette Bounet, Lynda Perdigon, Sherry Esteves, Sean Hutchinson, and Wendy Thomas. I’d like to give a warm welcome to our new Board members who have graciously accepted to serve from 2018-2020, specifically: Sherry Esteves, Kristy Miranda, Stephen Penny, Cricket Stickney, and Brian Wilson. A huge thanks to Ricky Rubeiz for his years of service, as he steps down from the Board this month, and warm wishes as he pursues new and exciting work opportunities here in São Paulo. As I mentioned last month, as a Board, we are in the process of rolling out some ambitious new events and programs. At the AGM, many of you received a new membership card. Hold on tight to these in the months ahead as we launch the American Society Membership Benefits Program, exclusive to AmSoc members, with discounts to and special services from fine restaurants, spas, hotels, and other service providers in the São Paulo area. Leveraging our existing partnerships and bringing in new PRESIDENT'S LETTER ones, we aim to create added value to AmSoc membership, helping us attract new members and keep the ones we have. But Membership Benefits programs are worthless if our events don’t attract attendees and inspire people to attend future ones. So we’ll be doubling down on the quality of our events, adding VIP events for membersonly, and letting ones go that don’t meet our exacting standards. The result will be a line-up of worthy events and activities that you and your family look forward to attending month after month. One such event is a new networking program called EXPAND, which will be targeted at young professionals. This ambitious new series of events seeks to bring young American professionals together with Brazilians and other internationals. Board member Stephen Penny will be leading EXPAND, working together with our existing Business Networking team led by the very talented and dedicated Elias Gedeon and Fernanda Gedeon. We hope EXPAND, and other new events we’ll be adding this year, will help us provide our existing membership with the quality you expect and deserve, and help us attract new members to enrich and diversify our organization. The people - they are so friendly! And my husband is one!! Places you plan to visit? I want to take a boat down the Amazon river. What surprised you about Brazil? The size... it's just so big compared to Wales! Surprising fun fact about yourself? Before moving here last year I came to visit SP and broke my ankle on the way to the airport. In my 24 hours in the city, I spent them in the hospital and finding a shop that sells crutches before transiting to Santiago.
