13) Clean Beaches<br />

Clean Beaches are those from which it is safe for<br />

adults <strong>to</strong> swim and their children <strong>to</strong> play. The EU<br />

standards apply <strong>to</strong> any bathing waters that are<br />

popular and can refer <strong>to</strong> a river, lake, or reservoir.<br />

The EU Bathing Water Directive requires that the level of pollution<br />

in bathing waters is moni<strong>to</strong>red and assessed, and the public are<br />

informed of the quality of the bathing waters. The ‘Blue Flag’ is the<br />

common sign of safety, though accreditation is actually awarded by<br />

the Foundation for Environmental Education, based in Denmark.<br />

Sewers are the main source of contamination and faecal matter<br />

poses a risk <strong>to</strong> human health. The original EU standards were considerably<br />

tightened in 2006 and extended <strong>to</strong> other forms of pollution.<br />
