completed by the following November [The EPQ is graded as half an A-level] and is looked at very favourably by universities.
‘A’ Level Entry Requirements [including grade 4 or better
in Maths & English]
Reformed specifications have been introduced for all A level courses. The main
difference between these new specifications and the old specifications is that
performance in Year 12 no longer contributes to the final A level result. Conyers Sixth
Form has therefore decided that students who enrol on A level courses will not be
entered for AS exams at the end of Year 12.
The basic entry requirements are five or more ‘4 or C’ grades. Guidance about the
number of A level courses students should study is as follows:
• Students who achieve fewer than five ‘6 or B’ grades study three A level courses
• Students who achieve between five ‘6 or B’ grades and four ‘7 or A’ grades study
three A level courses plus either an EPQ or Core Mathematics.
Transition Conference
The ‘Transition Conference' will run on Monday 24th and Tuesday 25th June 2019. It
is expected that all Year 11 students who have applied to join the Sixth Form will
attend. The aim of the course is for students to be fully prepared for their Post-16
education so that choices are fully informed. During the two days students will
attend a series of A level lessons using the Year 12 timetable and also visit a local
University.
16 Conyers School

Academic support
All students have a fortnightly mentoring session with their Form Tutor. This time is used to
monitor progress and to complete university applications and Personal Statements. The tutor
will chase up attendance issues and ensure that students are on track to achieve their target
grades. In the Sixth Form Year 12 and Year 13 students are mixed together in tutor groups.
Financial Support
We can offer financial support (and non-financial support, for example, free school meals) to
families from lower income backgrounds. Parents of lower income families can apply for our
discretionary bursary scheme. We can offer financial support to help cover transport costs,
meals and other incidentals.
Transport
Sixth Form students do not qualify for free travel assistance. Students who are travelling from
an area where school transport is provided for Years 7 to 11 can still use the current school
buses on a pay-as-you-go basis. Students can apply for a pass for the service on Enrolment
Day in August 2019. A half price bus pass [Pathfinder] may be available for journeys on Arriva
transport services depending on where a student lives. For further details, please telephone
[01642] 528499.
Enrichment Activities
All Sixth Form students participate in a range of enrichment activities on a Wednesday
afternoon. These include: * Sporting activities * Lower school academic mentoring * Peer
mentoring * Cookery * Work experience * Voluntary work in the local community * Primary
school attachment.
University, Apprenticeships and Beyond
All students are given help with their university applications and Paul Webster and his team
will thoroughly check all applications and Personal Statements. In 2018, the vast majority of
our university applicants secured a place in Higher Education and we work closely with our
local universities. It is worthwhile to start thinking now about what you will be doing in two
years’ time and what you will be writing in your Personal Statement.
Dress Code
Sixth Form students are not required to wear a uniform, but should wear clothing which is
appropriate for a working environment. As a safeguarding requirement, all students are
issued with and required to wear a Photo Identity Badge. This must be visible at all times.
Why Conyers?
Because we offer high quality teaching, we get fantastic A level and BTEC results, we
offer a supportive and friendly environment in which to learn, we will support you
with your university or apprenticeship application and we will give you many
opportunities to enrich your life and mature into a responsible and articulate adult.
Will I enjoy my time in the Sixth Form?
Without a doubt, this is a resounding YES. We are proud of our close-knit and
supportive community. Those students who have joined us from other schools always
comment on how friendly we are; just ask our current students.
How many subjects can I take?
This may depend on your GCSE results, but students will study either three or four A
level subjects or follow a BTEC Extended Diploma course.
Do I have to wear a school uniform?
No! But we do ask students to dress appropriately for a learning environment.
Can I leave the school site?
Yes – we like to treat our students as young adults. However, many students choose
to use their non-contact time for private study, and we encourage you to do so.
Will I be in a tutor group?
All students will be placed in a tutor group of approximately 20 students from Year
12 and Year 13. The tutor will play a vital role in your experience at Conyers and will
ensure that you are successful.
Will I get help with my university/apprenticeship application?
We pride ourselves on the help and assistance we give to all of our students as they
leave Year 13 and embark on the next stage of their career. All applications are
personally checked and Personal Statements will be given the ‘Webster’ treatment!
Can I wear my prom dress again?
Yes – the Summer Ball is a highlight of Year 13 [but we don’t recommend that you
wear it to lessons!]
