Last of the summer barbeques? Recently as I was driving home between fields and hedgerows on the country lanes the sun was peeking through the clouds and it had that golden sunset glow to it, so beautiful I wanted to stop and take a photo. But then I realised, it’s only 6 o’clock! When did the long summer evenings start to disappear? August has been so grey and dull here that I hadn’t noticed, hadn’t appreciated the summer evenings as much as I should have. And suddenly they are gone. But hey, the forecast is looking up, let’s have one last mad dash to enjoy it while it lasts and have a last-of-the-summer barbeque! Seemed like a good idea at the time, but in reality the evenings are now a bit too chilly, for me anyway who feels the cold like a 90 year old. It makes me feel old actually, looking back on camping trips we used to take in our clapped out VW T4 van in early September to avoid the crowds. We’d sit out into the evening after surfing or walking all day cooking our dinner over the hot coals, cosied up in jumpers and thick socks, feeling the contentment of tired muscles and salty skin, breathing in the fresh September air. Nowadays, given the choice, I’d rather cosy up under a blanket on my comfy sofa. I’m still waiting for one last warm Indian summer’s day so that I can sit out all afternoon and have my last barbeque of the year. First and last of the year, it’s a ritual for me. While I was driving home that day, I also couldn’t help but notice the birds darting over the hedges and across the road in front of me like little daredevils. They were swallows or swifts, I can never be sure which is which, such a familiar sight in the summer. Their characterful activity made me smile, but also started me thinking that they must be off soon on their epic migratory journey back to Africa to spend the winter. Perhaps that was the reason for their flurried activity. I saw them again the next morning, performing the same aerial acrobatics around the quarry car park, whipping the local birds into a similar frenzy of twittering excitement. They didn’t seem at all concerned at my presence, obviously too intent on filling their bellies to the brim on insects ready for their journey. The mad little things really do bring a smile to your face, but mine soon faded when I realised they’d soon be gone. And I haven’t seen them since. Luckily the melancholy of summer’s end is soon put behind me when a few days later, on a bright and clear morning, I feel the chill of autumn in the air. It makes me feel invigorated, and fills me with the excitement of the turning of the seasons. Wouldn’t life be boring if the weather was the same all year round? I know many would argue of the benefits of eternal summer, but I for one am strongly in the camp of the changing seasons. Each one brings new things to look forward to, a new wardrobe and new celebrations. I can’t help but look forward to each as the wheel of the year turns ever onwards. Plus, I’ve got new winter boots to break in! What autumnal delights are you looking forward to? (By courtesy of cornishbynature.wordpress.com) Deadline for the November ‘slate’ is Oct 10th Charity Music Day Just been doing the page for the Chapel October dates and was rather horrified to see that Charity Music Day is on 13th October! They do say that time passes more quickly as you get older! If you cast your mind back to previous years, you’ll remember that various musicians (not really started asking yet) entertain during the day, there are various Charity stalls selling their wares (including Christmas Cards - sorry), people (you?) pop in and out throughout the day but lunch time is especially popular when there are delicious soups and sweets on offer. Obviously teas, coffees and goodies are available throughout the day - and there’ll be plenty of donation jars around so that we can make a contribution to this year’s charity, which is… This is a group of self-funding volunteers operating as a registered charity to provide a free ‘out of hours’ delivery service to the NHS throughout Cornwall and beyond. They estimate that in 2017 alone they saved the NHS in excess of £175,000 covering over 96,000 operational miles and completing 2,100 jobs. So do come along on Saturday 13th October, 10am-5pm, put your hands in your pockets and some pennies in the jars.
