Overwhelming day at Geham Craft and Garden show
If you thought it would be
smart to head to the Geham
Craft and Garden Show early
on the carnival weekend, you
weren’t alone.
From 8am on Saturday cars
and people alike were lined up
as far as the eye could see, trying
to get the first glimpse of the
popular homegrown event that
locals have come to love.
All morning and well into
the afternoon, hundreds of people
packed Geham State School
grounds to indulge in the weekend
that had been in the making
since February.
The queues didn’t seem to
bother people however, as they
queued with a basket full of
local produce, homemade arts
and crafts or a plant or two that
caught their eye.
Advertising and Sponsorship
co-ordinator Heather Titmarsh
said everyone who visits always
says how much they love the
children helping out on the day.
“We try to do things differently
every year and give everybody
something to come and
visit so I think its just word of
mouth that’s getting everyone
more interested,” she said.
“We have had to get special
permission to use the oval as a
carpark, we have never had to do
that before.”
“We have been going nonstop
setting up for two weeks and the
preparation begins in February.”
More than 40 students helped
out on the day, including a
huge number of volunteers who
helped the event run smoothly,
something Mrs Titmarsh said
was a highlight of the weekend.
“It’s really hard to get volunteers,
so the ones that are here
are very dedicated.”
“We would like to say thank
you to our local community and
businesses for the support because
without them we couldn’t
do it.”
People were treated to dance
performances put on by the Aspire
Dance Academy, plenty of
entertainment and guest speakers
over the weekend.
Mrs Titmarsh said it was one
of the biggest Craft and Garden
Shows yet. - Jack Waters
After nearly four years of service, Mary Mac-
Killop Catholic College Principal, Mr Peter Murphy
will return to his coastal home town of Port
Macquarie.
During his time as the Principal, Peter has overseen
an abundance of growth and change as the
college continues on its journey to a Prep to Year
12 college.
Most notably, the renewal of the Building Master
Plan, new buildings in the senior school, a new
college credo, logo, song and prayer, as well as
the introduction of new courses as we develop and
grow our senior school.
Giving his final principal’s address at the college
assembly this week, noted that “there are
many wonderful dimensions to Mary MacKillop
Catholic College.
“Great teachers living a model of generosity
and service, wonderful support staff, welcoming
students and an actively involved parent body”.
Staff, students, parents and members of the
Catholic Schools Office were in attendance to
honour and farewell Mr Murphy.
Absorbing his final moments at the college, Peter
thanked the community of staff, parents, and,
most importantly, the students, for giving him the
opportunity to lead them over the past four years.
“Stepping down from my role has afforded me
the opportunity to look at the college with fresh
eyes and marvel in the generosity and of what our
teachers offer our students.
“It’s been a busy year of activities, excursions,
camps and sporting events, all of which are led by
the passionate teaching and support staff that make
up this great college.”
During the end-of-term college assembly, after
a heart-warming video send off from students
around the campus, senior students formed a
guard of honour, pictured, to show Mr Murphy
their gratitude to his service and leadership.
• As a college, we thank you for your service,
your kind and respectful nature and your leadership
in an ever changing and ever growing community.
