bike area for off-road biking, a full
service ski area, a small lake with
great fi shing, and tons of hiking
trails and well as shops, antique
stores, and great places to eat.
Our distribution uses direct bulk
mail in Green Valley Lake, Running
Springs, and Skyforest. The
Mountain Lifestyle is also distributed
for customers to pick up in
the above cities and others on the
mountain, as well as targeted locations
and visitor centers ‘down
the hill’ in San Bernardino County.

The Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church
is presenting a Pinewood Derby and
Chili Cookoff on Sunday October
7, at 3:15 pm.
A trial run will start at 2:30 pm.
There is a $5 entry fee and that includes
an authorized racing kit. If
costs $3 without a kit.
1st, 2nd, and 3rd place prizes will
be announced for the chili cookoff.
The FREE chili tasting includes
corn bread,salad, soda, and desert.
Trophies will be awarded for 1st,
2nd, and 3rd, as well as best looking,
most creative, and Pastor’s
choice in the kids division and 1st,
2nd, 3rd, and best looking in the senior
division.
Come watch the excitement of the
Pinewood Derby and sample and
cast your vote for the testiest pots
of chili on the mountain.
Running Springs Chamber
planning new Christmas
Lighting contest
During the month of December
the Running Springs Chamber of
Commerce will be continuing with
the tradition of judging Christmas
light displays throughout the comunities
of Running Springs, Arrowbear
Lake, and Green Valley Lake.
Both businesses and residents
are encourged to enter the contest.
Prizes are for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd
in each catagory and a chamber
choice award. The prizes will be
announced in later publications.
The judging will happen during the
first two weeks of the month of December

Sundays at Two”
Community Concert with
focus on Halloween theme
Sun. October 28, 2018 @ 2:00 pm
St. Richard’s Church is hosting
another community concert entitled
“Sundays at Two” at 2:00 pm
on Sunday, October 28th at St.
Richard’s Church, 28708 Hwy 18,
Skyforest, across from the Skyforest
Inn. With its focus on Halloween,
this musical event will feature
Halloween-themed music and will
be performed by Mr. John Reith,
piano, and David Bruns, baritone.
This is a not-for-profit fundraising
event for St. Richard’s Church; the
suggested donation is $25 with no
charge for children 12 and under. A
spaghetti dinner will be served following
the performance; all attendees
are welcome.
Mr. Reith graduated from Eastman
School of Music, Magna cum
Laude and is the Music Director for
St. Richard’s Church.

Best Kept Secret in Crestline!

Originally purchased in
2003 by Bob Castro and Carol Deason,
the Stockade in Crestline has
been the steady and go-to locations
for over 50 years. Norm and Lilly
Piland opened the Stockade Café
at its current location in the early
1960s. The western facade, with a
real wooden boardwalk, makes it a
local landmark. But, the best reason
to go to Stockade is the food.
Ramon, the cook, has been
delivering outstanding, uncomplicated,
and delicious meals in
restaurants since he was 16 yearsold
and is considered to be the best
cook around town. The restaurant
is known for its “gourmet grub”,
steaks, calamari, burgers, seafood
and salads, not to mention the ever-popular
Taco Tuesday with
freshly made chips and salsa.
Carol has spent her whole
life in the restaurant business, and
after selling a small sports bar and
restaurant in Orange, was looking
to purchase a cocktail lounge. Her
husband Bob surprised her and had
spoken with the previous owner
and bought the Stockade the night
before.

Most locals will tell you that
the most important thing about the
Stockade, is the food. With a large
pit BBQ just outside the door, it is
quickly evident what the focus is
on. The ribs and brisket are very
tender and easy to pull off the bone.
When the barbecue is cooking, the
smell can attract many from around
the area. On Thanksgiving and
Christmas holidays, Carol sets out
special items that are not necessarily
on the menu to give back to those
that may not be with family around
the holidays. Live entertainment is
available on Friday and Saturday
nights for all to enjoy.
Another item on the menu
that is very popular is the calamari.
“People come all the way from the
beach cities to try the calamari”
states Carol. It is made with loving
care as it is something that can be a
‘between meals’ snack or an appetizer
if waiting for dinner.
The Stockade Grub &
Whiskey serves lunch from 11 am
to 2 pm and dinner from 5 pm until
10 pm. with the restaurant and bar
open all day until 10 pm. There is
seating in the front bar area and the
rear dining room, and in the back

area (behind the restaurant) there is
a secluded patio that can seat up to
80 people.
Local residents maintain
the Stockade has the best weekend
breakfast in town, served every Saturday
and Sunday from 8 a.m. to
2 p.m. These traditional breakfasts
feature omelets, egg meals, with
hash browns or country potatoes
and toast, plus biscuits and gravy,
and pancakes.
The Stockade received a
4-Star rating on YELP.com, and a
4.3 rating on Facebook with 154
reviews and counting. The western
look starts with the outside boardwalk
with older wooden planks outside,
antique kitchen items hanging
from the ceiling, and signed dollar
bills posted everywhere, along with
old west paintings the restaurant
creates a look of the old west or
something you might see in bygone
days.
The Stockade Grub & Whiskey
is located at 23881 Lake Drive
in Crestline’s downtown business
district. Call 338-2465 for reservations
if you have a large party. For
a great meal at reasonable prices,
the Stockade has always been and a
must go for locals and visitors alike.
