Our People Spotlight on: Coastguard Northern Region CNR Communications While most of Coastguard’s volunteers use engines, ropes, first aid equipment and binoculars to help people in trouble at sea, one Coastguard unit relies solely on the power of their voices to save lives, the Coastguard Northern Region Communications unit. When someone is in trouble at sea, the Communications unit are at the very centre of the rescue response – speaking to the people in trouble, broadcasting Mayday calls and alerting and tasking other emergency services to respond. This integral role of coordination was highlighted in April when the Communications unit received a police call to say that a catamaran was rapidly sinking with six people on board, including two children. With so many lives at stake and a rapidly deteriorating situation, the Communications unit were quickly at the helm of a massive combined rescue effort involving rescue helicopters, police, two Coastguard rescue vessels and the Defence Force. The Duty Officer in charge of coordinating the rescue, Hemi Manaena, said it was vital they heard the call for help so they could spring into action. “If help hadn’t arrived when it did, the outcome could have been tragic,” says Hemi. By using their skills and keeping a cool head to coordinate the response, the Communications unit ensured that a potentially deadly outcome was avoided and six lives were saved that day. ‘‘ ‘‘ If help hadn’t arrived when it did, the outcome could have been tragic 14 I ANNUAL REPORT 2018 Radio Operators like Hemi and Nikki are often at the very centre of rescue responses.
Spotlight on: Coastguard Eastern Region The Peeters, Coastguard Tauranga Of all Coastguard’s inspiring volunteers, one trio of brothers are at the heart of their community - Aaron, Ethan and Levi Peeters are all volunteers at Coastguard Tauranga and use their strong family bond to make a difference. “It’s something we really enjoy and look forward to doing,” says Ethan. “It’s a great way for us to help our community, get out and about together and learn some great skills.” Aaron, Ethan and Levi’s community involvement goes beyond Coastguard, as they dedicate their time and share their skills with other emergency services as well. Aaron volunteers with the local Civil Defence Response team, Ethan is in the process of becoming a volunteer with St John, while Levi volunteers with the Fire Service. “It does take a little bit of juggling but it’s good to get some action,” says Levi. “What’s great about volunteering is that you really become a part of the community,” says Aaron. “To look out to the water and know you’re supporting all of those boaties out there is a really good feeling.” Thanks to these amazing brothers, the community of Tauranga have dedicated and passionate volunteers keeping them safe on the water. ‘‘ ‘‘ What’s great about volunteering is that you really become part of the community Aaron, Levi and Ethan share the same dedication and drive to help their community. 15
