The WHY
Behind
Polo for Charity
By Nicole Schultz & Emily Campbell
Supporting local non-profits in our
community is the primary reason that
Polo for Charity was organized by the
Rotary Club of Okatie. This year, the club will
celebrate the 25th anniversary polo match on
Sunday, October 28th at Rose Hill Plantation. Since
their inception, it is estimated that Okatie Rotarians
have contributed over $360,000. and countless hours of
volunteer service to worthwhile charities throughout the
Bluffton community. Each year at polo, the beneficiaries
and the corporate sponsors may change, but one
thing that remains steadfast is the Okatie Rotary Club
commitment backed by hard work and determination to
help others in the Lowcountry.
2018 POLO BENEFICIARY
This year’s primary beneficiary for the 25th anniversary
Polo for Charity Match is the Lowcountry Foundation for
Wounded Military Heroes (LFWMH).
Since
2010,
LFWMH
has
donated
nearly $1.1
million
to local
combatwounded
veterans in
Beaufort
County.
Through their efforts,
LFWMH provides funding
for service dogs, military
family programs, college education
for surviving children of fallen special
operations personnel and mortgage-free
homes to combat injured servicemen.
In 2011,
the Board
partnered
with the
PGA Tour’s
“Birdies for
the Brave,”
consisting of
11 military
charities that
have been
vetted and
approved.
One of these
charities, K9s
for Warriors,
will be the
primary
recipient of
proceeds
raised by the Rotary Club of Okatie from this year’s
polo event. The money raised will cover the costs of
LFWMH’s 17th sponsored service dog, who will fittingly
be named “Okatie” and paired with a deserving
combat-wounded warrior from our area.
