Chairman, BNP, who is accused of '21st August' tragedy.
Meanwhile, defence lawyer
Sanaullah Mia said they were
disappointed at the
verdict.He claimed that
Tarique Rahman is innocent.Replying
to a query,
Sanaullah said the verdict
against Tarique will be challenged
once he returns
home.BNP also turned down
the verdict, saying it has been
given at the 'behest of the
government' with a political
motive. "BNP thinks that the
verdict is a politically motivated
one. It's a naked manifestation
of satisfying government's
political vengeance,"
said BNP Secretary General
Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir
while speaking at a press conference
at party's Nayapaltan
central office.Of the chargesheeted
accused, Jamaat secretary
general Ali Ahsan
Mohammad Mojaheed, and
militant leaders Mufti Abdul
Hannan and Sharif Shahedul
Alam alias Bipul-were
dropped from the cases as
they had been executed after
convictions in other
cases.Thirty-one accused,
including Babar and Salam,
were produced before the tribunal
from a Gazipur jail
before the delivery of the verdict. They
were brought to the
tribunal from Kashimpur
Central Jail in Gazipur in
three prison vans around
11:20am.Meanwhile, security
was beefed up in the capital,
including in and around the
special trial court, to fend off
any untoward incident over
the verdict.Additional law
enforcers were deployed at
important points of the capital
while members of Rapid
Action Battalion, Bomb Disposal
unit of Dhaka Metropolitan
Police and Armed
Police Battalion remained
posted at Nazimuddin
Road.Besides, the movement
of pedestrians on and around
the road was restricted.Earlier
on September 18, the tribunal
fixed October 10 to
pronounce its verdict in two
Aug 21 grenade attack
Save the Ecosystem
Ecosystem consists of all living
and nonliving things that
depend on each other to survive
people are destroying different
ecosystem by different way and
threats. Ecosystem is very much
important for us, wildlifeetc. Without
it we cannot live anywhere; wildlife
cannot live anywhere. Ecosystem is
our home to live in but people are
destroying it and harming it.
" Poaching: People are poaching
animals too much for their needs,
so sometimes these animals can
become extinct and some animal
become endangered. People
should give them time to
reproduce again then there will be
a balance and these animals can
be saved.
" Overfishing: People are catching
too much fishes for that the fishes
are becoming extinct so we should
try to give them time to reproduce
than it will be a balance and fishes
will be not harmed and the fresh
water and oceanic system will be
also harmed.
" Urbanization: In urbanization
people make a lot of buildings and
cities and towns. This is bad
because it causes damage to the
natural environment, and this
damage increases with larger
populations.
" Natural Disasters: Natural
disasters such as tornadoes,
hurricanes and typhoons disrupt
life cycles, habitat. Causes
pollution, people loss their homes
cases-one for murder and the
other for grenade blast-after
both the prosecution and the
defence completed their
arguments.Closing their
arguments, the prosecution
sought the highest punishment
to all the accused,
including Tarique, saying
they were able to prove all the
charges beyond reasonable
doubt.They also said Tarique
masterminded the attack and
helped militants in order to
kill Sheikh Hasina by throwing
the grenades to make
Awami League leaderless.But
the defence lawyers sought
acquittal of their clients as
they said the prosecution
failed to present substantial
evidence to prove the
charges.They also claimed
that Tarique, who has been
staying in London since
2008, was implicated in the
cases with a political
motive.Earlier, the court set
September 17 and 18 for
hearing the closing arguments
after hearing the prosecution's
rebuttal arguments
against defence arguments
on September 12.On October
23 last, the prosecution started
placing arguments before
the tribunal in connection
with the two cases filed over
the August 21 grenade attack
on an Awami League rally in
the capital in 2004.On
August 21, 2004, the grisly
grenade attack was carried
out on an anti-terrorism rally
arranged by Awami League
at Bangabandhu Avenue during
the BNP-Jamaat
alliance's rule, aiming to kill
then opposition leader
Sheikh Hasina.At least 24
leaders and activists, including
AL's women affairs secretary
and late President Zillur-
Rahman's wife Ivy Rahman,
were killed and 300 others
injured in the grenade
attack.Although Sheikh Hasina
fortunately escaped the
attack unhurt, her hearing
was affected badly.At least 13
grenades were thrown from
the rooftops of a nearby
building soon after Sheikh
Hasina had finished her
speech at the rally.Then the
two cases-one under the
Explosive Substances Act and
another for murder-were
filed in connection with the
grenade attack.The then
BNP-led government formed
a one-member investigation
committee comprising of
High Court Justice JainulAbedin
on August 22,
2004.Justice JainulAbedin
submitted his report after 40
days indicting that a powerful
foreign intelligence agency
had a hand in the incident.
But Awami League turned
down the probe report.As the
Criminal Investigation
Department (CID) was later
assigned to deal with the cases,
they made a cooked-up
story of Joj Mia and arrested
him with 20 other people in
connection with the incident
in June 2005.Joj Mia was
reportedly forced to give a
statement confessing to his
involvement in the attack.
Later, there had been no
progress in the investigation
during the BNP-Jamaat
rule.The investigation into
the grenade attack took a new
turn after the military-backed
caretaker government took
over following the 1/11 political
changeover in 2007.On
June 11, 2008, the CID assistant
police superintendent
FazlulKabir submitted two
separate charge-sheets in the
two cases, accusing 22 people,
including Harkat-ul-
Jihad-al-Islami operations
commander Mufti Abdul
Hannan and Abdus Salam
Pintu.After recording the testimonies
of 61 prosecution
witnesses, a court on August
3, 2009 ordered further
investigation into the cases
following petitions filed by
the prosecution after the
Awami League came to power.Now-retired
police officer
Abdul KaharAkanda was given
the charge for carrying out
investigation into the cases.In
July, 2011, a supplementary
to live Due to this the food chain
and environment gets destroyed
which may harm the ecosystem.
" Deforestation: Deforestation is the
clearing, destroying, or otherwise
removal of trees deliberately,
naturally or accidentally. One of the
most dangerous effects of
deforestation is the loss of animal
and plant species because of the loss
of habitat. The loss of trees can turn
forests into desert like areas which
can kill most animals there. The
lack of trees also allows a greater
amount of greenhouse gases to be
released into the atmosphere which
can cause global warming. Other
effects of deforestation are soil
erosion and flooding. People should
plant a lot of trees and not cut a lot
of trees in once
" Mining and Drilling Fossil Fuels:
Mining is the extraction of
minerals and other geological
materials of economic value from
deposits on the earth. Mining has
the potential to have severely
adverse effects on the
environment including loss of
biodiversity,
erosion,
contamination of surface water,
ground water, and soil. Mining
requires soil to be removed and
when that happens plants are also
removed which eventually
exposes the soil to weather, and
this may cause very small dust
particles and other pollutants to
destroy the air around us. Water
pollution is also caused by mining
charge-sheet was submitted
accusing 30 more people,
including TariqueRahman,
former state minister for
home Lutfozzaman Babar,
Abul Harris Chowdhury and
the Ali Ahsan Mohammad
Mojaheed.
7 Rohingyas held
along Satkhira border
SATKHIRA : Seven
Rohingyas, including women
and children, were held from
Abaderghat in Sadar upazila
early Wednesday while being
trafficked to India, reports
UNB.
The arrestees are Nur
Begum, 45, wife of Selim,
their three children-Rashida
Begum, 5, Jannatara Begum,
3, and Sagar, 1, Hasina
Begum, 22, wife of Azizul
Haque, their daughter Rozina
Begum, 4, and Usun
Zaman, 75. Mostafizur Rahman,
officer-in-charge of
Sadar Police Station, said following
their suspicious
movement along the border,
locals caught them and handed
them over to police.
Couple found
dead in Cumilla
CUMILLA : A couple was found
dead at their house at Salepur
village in Laksam upazila on
Wednesday, reports UNB.
Police recovered the hanging
body of Shafiullah, 40, son of
Hedayetullah, and the throatslit
body of his wife Rabeya
Khatun, 28, in the morning.
Ariful Islam, a member of
Kandirpar union parishad, said
the couple used to lock in brawl
over family matters.
Shafiullah might have slaughtered
his wife and then committed
suicide by hanging himself
from the ceiling of the house, he
said.Being informed by locals,
police recovered the bodies
from a room which was locked
from inside and sent those to
Comilla Medical College Hospital
morgue for autopsy.
and can include metal
contamination, increased
sediment levels in streams, and
acid mine drainage.
" Using nonbiodegradableproducts:
usingnon-biodegradableproducts
such as plastics are very harmful
for the environment because it
does not decompose with the soil
so it can make a place full of
garbage and it can cause air
pollution and water pollution.
Solutions to This Problem
" People should stop using plastic
products
" Reduce air pollution by improving
energy use and different transport
systems which are less harmful.
" Create private-public partnerships
to provide services such as waste
disposal and housing.
" Plant trees and incorporate the
care of city green spaces so that
the environment is not harmed.
" Aware people about the dangers of
loss of ecosystem by writing
articles or making posters
PLEASE SAVE THE ECOSYSTEM
AND PLANT A LOT OF TREES
The food chain will be balanced,
ecosystem will be a perfect
ecosystem, wildlife will not lose their
habitats and the world will be safe,
perfect and happy.
TBT: Is there any special
assessment in dropout rate in
education in your area?
Dy Speaker: Dropout
rate has been minimized in
my area by interventions of
government and particularly
of the NGO's. I have put up
with the teachers of the government
schools that if private
Kindergarten school can
do better why can't they as
they are being paid much
more. And now it has
improved because I always
put them under pressure.
And each year I organize an
assembly of both primary
and higher school teachers. I
hold minimum of 3-4 meetings
of the teachers to develop
the standard of education.
TBT: What steps will you
take in your area to face Artificial
Intelligence and climate
change challenges and to
cope with the global world?
Dy Speaker: I do not
accept Artificial Intelligence
as Bangladesh is a densely
populated country and if
Artificial Intelligence is used
then our man power will be
demoralized. In my opinion
under the leadership of
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina
we can reach the climax of
development. We should not
worry about Artificial Intelligence
because our manpower
is a power. We are not born
with only a mouth; we are
born with two hands and two
legs. You see in 1971 our population
was only 7 crore. Now
we are over 16 crore. Land
has decreased drastically by
1971, due to brick fields,
industries and roads. Whenever
I go to my area I see
thousands of brick fields
which are wasting the land.
In 1971 we could not feed our
people but now we can feed
our people only because of
manpower. You see an advocate
and journalist both have
an association but it is only
farmers who do not have any
association. They don't think
about sun or rain or flood. All
they think about is work.
Another thing is that Prime
Minister Sheikh Hasina has
given much importance to
research. In agriculture sector
Prime Minister Sheikh
Hasina have made tremendous
development only
because of research. That's
why we are being able to
make our country self sufficient
in food.
TBT: What more steps you
want to take to make your
area role model of a role
model?
IU gets female
assistant proctor
ISLAMIC UNIVERSITY
(KUSHTIA) : Shammy
Akter, an assistant professor
of Applied Nutrition and
Food Technology
department, has been made
assistant proctor of Islamic
University (IU) in Kushtia,
reports UNB.
IU acting Registrar SM
Abdul Latif told UNB on
Wednesday morning that IU
Vice-chancellor Prof M
Harun-Ur-Rashid Askari
appointed her to the post for
the next one year.
Shammy Akter said she
will work for maintaining a
stable atmosphere on the
campus with the assistance
from teachers and students.
College girl
found dead
in Sirajganj
SIRAJGANJ : Police
recovered the hanging body
of a college girl from her
residence at Shibpara village
in Tarash upazila on
Tuesday, reports UNB.
The deceased was
identified as Mousumi, 17, a
Class-XI student of
Gultabazar Shaheed M
Mansur Ali College and
daughter of Mozdar Hossain
of the village.
Mostafizur Rahman,
officer-in-charge of Tarash
Police Station, said on
information from locals,
they recovered the hanging
body of Mousumi in the
morning and sent it to Sadar
Hospital morgue for
autopsy. He said they were
investigating whether the
incident is a suicide or
planned murder.
Dy Speaker: I want to
make Saghata-Phulchhari a
Bangladesh. I want to make it
a Bangladesh inside a
Bangladesh. That can only be
possible if I can make the
standard of education high.
And I am trying to do it. And
at the same time I am giving
emphasis on women empowerment.
Throughout the
whole world women empowerment
by Prime Minister
Sheikh Hasina have been
widely appreciated.
TBT: There are lots of
changes being made in education
system throughout the
world like Singapore to
scrape traditional exam rankings
and Australia to make
community college to cope
up with the next generation.
So what are your initiatives in
relevance of national issues to
make role model of role model
in education system?
Dy Speaker: Firstly the
standard of the education
should be maintained. Secondly
vocational training
centers should be established.
I have established
GD-1251/18 (14 x 3)
some vocational training
institutes which is Diploma
Engineering institutions in
my area. At first no one was
interested to join the institutes
but now many students
are available. If we can make
experts in different technologies
and if we can export
them abroad they we can
earn more foreign currencies.
This issue is in my head and I
am trying to make it happen.
In my opinion these are the
ways we can make Saghata-
Phulchhari role model of role
model of Bangladesh. In my
area there are no industries
and there is no possibility of
starting an industry . Only
government can establish an
industry there. But there are
possibilities of establishing
agro based industries. Once
Phulchhari upazila was
known as a poverty stricken
upazila. Now they are the best
in Gaibandha only by producing
chili pepper and
maize. You can find thousands
of acres of land there
harvesting these corps. People
of Dhaka are rushing are
rushing there by giving
advance money to the farmers
to buy those lands.
TBT: You are a parliament
member for sixth time. What
is your next 5 years plan for
your area in specific human
index, financial index and
overall combination of these
two indexes?
Dy Speaker: As I have
said before my one view is to
maintain standard education
in my area. If I can maintain
the standard of education
then the boys and girls in my
area will not be unemployed.
If we can continue the development
work for 5 years and
if we can maintain the standard
of education up to 10
years then I think our people
will never come to Dhaka and
they dont have to go to
abroad as well. Even my people
go abroad then they will
go as experts so that they can
send huge foreign remittance.
And if our agriculture
sector gets more developed
then the agriculture will be
sufficient to maintain ones
family in the rural areas.
