At the Reformation, the people were encouraged to join in daily worship in their parish churches, and the 1564 book of Common Order made provision for daily services.
Pastoral letter October 2018 In place of the customary Pastoral Letter this month I share part of a stirring sermon that Pamela preached on the second Sunday of last month. She is now undertaking her period of study at NEST (The Near East School of Theology) in Beirut and in the November and December issues of The Magazine we hope to have progress reports from her. Though she may be absent from us for three months I hope you will welcome the opportunity of having Pamela ‘preach’ through the pages of The Magazine. With all my love, Calum. A new ‘Reformation’ (Proverbs 22:1-2, 8-9 and 22-23 and St Mark 7:24-37) It might sound melodramatic to say ‘we’re in crisis’ but there are so many issues which are coalescing at the moment - both politically, and within the Church, that it scarcely seems an exaggeration any longer. But it’s the growing crisis within our Christian churches on which I want to concentrate this morning and there are a number of factors that are feeding into that. We’ve been facing the demographic changes for some time; ageing and dwindling congregations, fewer coming forward for ministerial training, and the increasing secularisation of weddings and funerals - and ‘naming ceremonies’ rather than baptisms. If the Church were a business - then the trends and projections would indeed be described as ‘in crisis’. Too many buildings to be maintained and insufficient footfall! Something’s wrong with our ‘business model’ we’d be saying. But Hallelujah! We’re not a business… and this is the reason I refuse to be despondent about the current trends. On the contrary - I think we’re being called to have a radical re-think of how we are ‘the Church in the world’ and this is a cause for excitement. Optimism not gloom. Our lectionary readings this morning challenge us to re-think our priorities and our purpose - our mission - our response to God’s Word. This morning we have juxtaposed - ‘being esteemed’ and ‘being despised’. Being esteemed being preferable to amassing worldly wealth
