Extremely deep on the aromatics, showing never-ending fruit,<br />

spice and juicy wild berries. The oak sensation is creamy, almost<br />

sweet. What a motivating nose! Delicious and elegant, with<br />

weight and class accompanied by an electrifying acidity! Smooth,<br />

soft and velvety tannins, a really mouth-coating wine. Outstanding<br />

Priorat that is over the top! (FC) 14.5% Drink 2016- 2025.<br />

2014 was a mild year complicated by rains in September, which<br />

required sorting grapes. This resulted in a 2014 1902 Centenary<br />

Carignan with half a point less alcohol than the cool 2013. This<br />

2014 feels exactly like something in between the 2013 and 2015<br />

vintages—with the freshness and tension of 2013 and the power<br />

and ripeness closer to 2015.<br />

It has a good compromise between power and elegance; it’s concentrated<br />

but with tension and freshness, lots of tannins but not<br />

astringent. A very concentrated but harmonious Cariñena, one of<br />

the best in Priorat. Only 864 bottles were filled unfined and unfiltered<br />

in April 2016 after 16 months in new French oak barrels.<br />

Jeb Dunnuck<br />

The wine is fermented all in tank and aged in new French oak.<br />

Deep purple/opaque colored and offering awesome notes of blueberries,<br />

liquid violets, plums, mint, and graphite, this beauty has<br />

bright, juicy acidity, gorgeous fruit, fine tannin and a great, great<br />

finish. I finished my note on this with “Awesome Wine!”<br />

I had two vintages of the old-vine cuvée to taste side by side,<br />

starting with the 2014 Doix Costers de Vinyes Velles. Made of<br />

55% Cariñena and 45% Garnacha from old vines on slopes<br />

on slate llicorella soils, the fermentation and aging are the<br />

same as for the centenary Carignan: fermentation in stainless<br />

steel with neutral yeasts and an élevage of 16 months<br />

in new French barriques. It has moderate alcohol and high<br />

acidity. It has already started developing some tertiary notes<br />

and shows some graphite and wet slate notes. The palate<br />

shows great balance, with concentration and freshness—<br />

what you’re aiming for in a wine like this where pure power<br />

might be too much. 5,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in<br />

April 2016.<br />

Superb fruit stuff! Dense, rich and opulent small berries.<br />

Extremely promising wine on the aromatics: fleshy and delicious<br />

fruit. Impressive intensity with a cutting salty acidity.<br />

Deep and showing layers and layers of fruit. (FC)14.5% Drink<br />

2017-2024.<br />

Jancis Robinson<br />

Dark crimson. Complex smoky minerals on the nose. Warm<br />

and molten! Old vines and lots of terroir powdered into this<br />

glass. Manages not to be too heay. Dry end. Lots to lick on -<br />

really is like sucking a stone. 14.5%. Drink 2018-2025.<br />

Guía Peñín 2018<br />

Color: cherry, maroon rim. Aroma: powerful, candied fruit,<br />

mountain herbs, fine cocoa. Palate: balanced, full, tasty,<br />

structured.<br />

February 2018<br />

Its deep ruby/purple color is followed by a beautiful perfume<br />

of blueberries, violets, graphite, lead pencil and iris flower.<br />

Just insanely pure, perfumed and complex, with full-bodied<br />

richness, this beauty glides across the palate with no weight,<br />

incredible tannin quality, no hard edges, and beautiful purity.<br />

While this cuvée used to be richer and slightly more concentrated,<br />

it’s more elegant, pure, and seamless today, without<br />

sacrificing intensity.<br />

A similar blend of 65% Garnacha, 25% Cariñena and 10% Syrah resulted<br />

in a 2015 Salanques with higher ripeness and notably lower acidity,<br />

reflecting a much warmer and drier year. It’s ripe and with lots of earthiness,<br />

mineral and characterful, with ripe fruit without excess, elegant<br />

tannins and a polished, sleek texture within the rusticity of the zone.<br />

18,000 bottles were filled in March 2017.<br />

February 2018<br />

Jeb Dunnuck<br />

The 2015 Salanques comes from a steep, three-hectare vineyard located<br />

near the village of Poboleda. This deep ruby/purple colored beauty offers a<br />

stunning bouquet of blueberries, raspberries, violets, and hints of resinous<br />

herbs and flowers. Medium to full-bodied, with a light, graceful, elegant texture<br />

that just glides across the palate, It’s not huge, but has plenty of intensity<br />

and length.<br />

Grapes from younger vines are used for the 2016 Les<br />

Crestes, which is also released earlier. It’s a blend of<br />

Garnacha with 20% Cariñena and 10% Syrah matured<br />

in second use French oak barrels for eight months.<br />

2016 was a dry growing season saved by a cooler September<br />

with some rain, which resulted in a relaxed<br />

and long harvest of grapes with good ripeness and<br />

acidity. It’s young, tender and aromatic, a gentle Priorat<br />

with a juicy palate and a fresh personality. Really<br />

attractive and pleasant. 48,000 bottles produced. It<br />

was bottled in June 2017.<br />

Intense purplish red, cardinal crimson rim with a thickly tinted<br />

tear that flows throughout the glass.<br />

February 2018<br />

Outstanding notes of black cherries, blackberries, graphite,<br />

lead pencil shavings, violets and beautiful minerality all<br />

emerge from the glass and this beauty is ripe, plump, rounded,<br />

and incredibly textured on the palate, with sweet tannin.<br />

It’s a beautifully pure, sexy, little fruit bomb to drink over the<br />

coming 4-5 years.<br />
