Demand for dean's<br />

resignation over DU<br />

question paper leak<br />

DHAKA : A group of Dhaka University (DU) students on<br />

Monday demanded resignation of Social Sciences faculty<br />

Dean Prof Sadeka Halim for her 'failure' to stop the question<br />

paper leak in the admission test under her faculty, reports<br />

UNB.<br />

The demand was made from a protest rally held under the<br />

banner of 'Students against Repression' at the foot of Raju<br />

Sculpture around 1:<strong>10</strong> pm.<br />

The results of the 'Gha' unit admission test for the first-year<br />

honours courses at Dhaka University (DU) under the <strong>2018</strong>-<br />

2019 academic session were postponed on Monday amid<br />

allegations of question paper leak.<br />

Hours after issuing a press release on publishing the results<br />

tomorrow (Tuesday), the Dhaka University authorities<br />

issued another press release saying that publication of the<br />

results was postponed as per the directives of Vice-chancellor<br />

Prof Akhtaruzzaman.<br />

Abu Raihan Khan, a 3rd-year student of Mass<br />

Communication and Journalism department, said many<br />

students got question paper before the entry test started.<br />

Allegation of question paper leak of the unit also arose last<br />

year, he said, adding that the coordinator of the unit, Prof<br />

Sadeka Halim, failed to prevent the leak.<br />

Mozakker Hossain, an admission seeker under the unit,<br />

said if the tradition of question paper leak continues, brilliant<br />

students will never get chance to enroll at DU.<br />

The students also brought out a procession which paraded<br />

different roads on the campus.<br />

Malaysian citizen held<br />

with huge gold<br />

DHAKA : Customs oficialsarrested a Malaysian national<br />

along with 7kgs of gold at Hazrat Shahjalal International<br />

Airport here on Sunday night, reports UNB.<br />

The arrestee was identified as Cyan Gi Kiong, 47.<br />

Othello Chowdhury, deputy commissioner (Customs) of<br />

customs preventive team, said the Malaysian citizen landed<br />

at the airport from a flight, OD<strong>16</strong>6 of Malindo Air, at <strong>10</strong>pm.<br />

On information, the team challenged him after he crossed<br />

the green channeland recovered seven gold bars worth<br />

around 3.50crore searching his jacket, said the official.<br />

JSC, JDC examinees must reach<br />

centres 30 mins before exam: Nahid<br />

DHAKA : Education Minister Nurul<br />

Islam Nahid on Monday said<br />

candidates of the upcoming Junior<br />

School Certificate (JSC) and Junior<br />

Dakhil Certificate (JDC) examinations<br />

will have to enter centres 30 minutes<br />

before the start of the test, reports<br />

UNB.<br />

Talking to reporters after a National<br />

Monitoring Committee meeting at the<br />

Secretariat, he also said if the<br />

candidates fail to turn up in the<br />

stipulated time, they will not be allowed<br />

to sit for that day's exam.<br />

This year, the JSC and JDC<br />

examinations will begin on<br />

November 1. A total of 26 lakh<br />

students will be appearing at both the<br />

examinations.<br />

There will be multiple question sets<br />

for candidates, which will be<br />

distributed after a lottery five minutes<br />

before the beginning of every exam,<br />

Nahid said.<br />

He said to avoid question paper leak<br />

and possible rumour, law enforcement<br />

agencies are taking strictest possible<br />

measures. "Every examination centre<br />

as well as social media will be<br />

monitored to look out for probable leak<br />

or rumour."<br />

No electronic device will be allowed<br />

in the vicinity of the examination hall<br />

while all involved in the examination<br />

process, including invigilators, will<br />

remain under surveillance, the minister<br />

said.<br />

He also said 47 cases have so far been<br />

filed and many people arrested over<br />

question paper leaks.<br />

heed to any rumour over question<br />

Senior officials of the Education<br />

Ministry, and representatives of the<br />

education boards and law enforcement<br />

agencies were also present at the<br />

meeting.<br />

DU Mourning Day observed<br />

DHAKA : Dhaka University authorities on Monday observed<br />

the Mourning Day through various programmes,<br />

commemorating the tragic deaths of students and guests in a<br />

building collapse at the university's Jagannath Hall 33 years<br />

ago, reports UNB.<br />

On this day in 1985, the roof of the dilapidated building of<br />

the dormitory's TV room caved in, leaving 40 people,<br />

including 26 students and 14 guests, dead and 300 others<br />

injured.<br />

Teachers, students, officials and employees of the<br />

university, led by Vice-Chancellor Prof Akhtaruzzaman,<br />

brought out a mourning procession from the Aparajeya<br />

Banglaandplaced wreaths at October Smriti Stambha at<br />

Jagannath Hall in the morning.<br />

Later, a discussion was held at the October Memorial<br />

Building at 8am.<br />

The DU vice-chancellor, Pro-VC (Administration) Prof<br />

Mohammad Samad, Treasurer Prof Kamal Uddin, DU<br />

Teachers' Association President Prof ASM Prof Maksud<br />

Kamal and hall Provost Prof Asim Sarker were, among<br />

others, present at the programme.<br />

A blood donation programme was also arranged on the<br />

Jagannath Hall premises while a painting exhibition held at<br />

the dormitory.<br />

Cumilla court accepts<br />

Khaleda's bail plea in<br />

murder case<br />

CUMILLA : A court here on Monday accepted the bail<br />

petition of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia in a murder case<br />

filed over the death of eight people in an arson attack here in<br />

2015, reports UNB.<br />

Judge of the District and Session's Judge Court KM<br />

Shamsul Alam accepted the petition and fixed November 11<br />

for hearing it, said Advocate Kaiyum Haque Rinku, a lawyer<br />

of the BNP chief.<br />

Earlier on October 3, Senior Judicial Magistrate Biplab<br />

Debnath rejected the bail petition of Khaleda Zia in the<br />

murder case.<br />

Eight people were killed and at least 20 others injured in a<br />

petrol bomb attack on a bus at Jogmohanpur in<br />

Chouddagram upazila during the BNP-led alliance's<br />

movement on February 3, 2015.<br />

Dhaka, Riyadh to sign<br />

MoUs on defence, ICT<br />

sector cooperation<br />

DHAKA : Bangladesh and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia<br />

(KSA) will sign two documents on defence and ICT<br />

cooperation during Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's KSA visit<br />

on October 17-18, reports UNB.<br />

The Prime Minister is scheduled to leave here for Riyadh<br />

on Tuesday afternoon by a special flight of Biman<br />

Bangladesh Airlines.<br />

Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali briefed the media<br />

about the visit at state guesthouse Padma on Monday<br />

afternoon.<br />

State Minister for Foreign Affairs M Shahriar Alam and<br />

Foreign Secretary M Shahidul Haque were present.<br />

Sharing titles of the deals, he said these are MoU on<br />

Defence Cooperation between Bangladesh and the Kingdom<br />

of Saudi Arabia and MoU on Cooperation in ICT sector.<br />

The Prime Minister will have a meeting with Saudi King<br />

Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud in Riyadh on Wednesday.<br />

She will inaugurate the newly constructed building of<br />

Bangladesh Embassy in Riyadh in the afternoon on the same<br />

day.<br />

The Prime Minister will leave Riyadh for Medina on<br />

Wednesday night after attending a business seminar to be<br />

arranged by Council of Saudi Chambers.<br />

She will offer fatehah at the grave of great Prophet Hazrat<br />

Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him).<br />

The Prime Minister will then go to Makkah from Medina<br />

and offer Omrah at night.<br />

She will lay the foundation stone of Bangladesh Consulate<br />

own building at Jeddah on Thursday.<br />

On Friday morning, the Prime Minister will leave Jeddah<br />

for Dhaka by a Biman Bangladesh Airlines special flight.<br />

During the visit, Sheikh Hasina will highlight Bangladesh's<br />

socioeconomic development to the Saudi government, said<br />

the Foreign Minister.<br />

He said a number of MoUs-both in public and private<br />

sectors-are likely to be signed during the visit.<br />

Minister Ali, among others, will accompany the Prime<br />

Minister during the visit.<br />

Probe to remove speculations<br />

over journo Khashoggi,<br />

hopes Dhaka<br />

DHAKA : Bangladesh has welcomed the joint Turkish-Saudi<br />

working group formed to probe the disappearance of Saudi<br />

journalist Jamal Khashoggi saying the joint investigation will<br />

help remove all the speculations, reports UNB.<br />

"Bangladesh welcomes the proposal by the Kingdom of<br />

Saudi Arabia to form a joint working group with Turkey to<br />

investigate the incident," said Foreign Minister AH<br />

Mahmood Ali on Monday.<br />

He said Bangladesh is following the news on the<br />

disappearance of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi and<br />

hoped that this joint investigation will help remove all the<br />

speculations.<br />

Turkish officials investigating the disappearance of<br />

Khashoggi will search Saudi Arabia's consulate in Istanbul,<br />

the Turkish Foreign Ministry says.<br />

Turkish officials believe Khashoggi was murdered in the<br />

consulate by Saudi agents nearly two weeks ago, but Riyadh<br />

strongly denies this, reports CNN.<br />

Diplomatic pressure is growing on the Saudi Arabia to give<br />

a fuller explanation.<br />

On Monday, Saudi Arabia's King Salman ordered an<br />

investigation into the case.<br />

Saudi Arabia has threatened to retaliate for any sanctions<br />

imposed against it after President Donald Trump said the oilrich<br />

kingdom deserves "severe punishment" if it is<br />

responsible for the disappearance and suspected murder of<br />

Washington Post contributor Jamal Khashoggi, reports AP.<br />

Khashoggi has written extensively about Saudi Arabia,<br />

criticising its war in Yemen, its recent diplomatic spat with<br />

Canada and its arrest of women's rights activists after the<br />

lifting of a ban on women driving.<br />

GP child online safety programme<br />

reaches more than 200,000 children<br />

DHAKA : A child online safety programme launched by<br />

Grameenphone, Telenor Group, and Unicef, has recently<br />

reached more than 200,000 children of the country, reports<br />

UNB.<br />

The initial target of the program was to reach 400,000 children,<br />

aged between 11 to <strong>16</strong> years, and sensitizing 50,000<br />

parents, guardians and teachers across the country over safer<br />

internet experiences, said a press release.<br />

The nationwide initiative titled 'Be Smart, Use Heart' held<br />

training in schools across the country focusing primarily on<br />

building awareness on the safety measures in digital learning.<br />

The programme also included the Child Helpline hotline<br />

(<strong>10</strong>98) service from where youth and guardians can directly<br />

receive counseling and other supports.<br />
