Helping with fees Scholarships The maximum scholarship award is 50% of school fees, this is also the maximum remission that can be offered in total. Exemplary standards of attendance, behaviour and satisfactory academic progress are required for the maintenance of a Scholarship. The Headmaster reserves the right to withdraw any scholarship award if the recipient no longer meets the criteria for eligibility or if school finances necessitate a reduction in awards. Academic Scholarships The Senior School For Year 7 entry, the applicants who perform in the top 5% of the national ability range on the ‘Entrance Assessment Days’ in June of Year 5 or November of Year 6 will be invited to a scholarship assessment day in late November of Year 6, along with Stafford Prep. School Year 6 children assessed as within the same ability range. On this day there will be further examination papers, assessments and other activities. Awards will be made based on their scholarship examination results, along with their performance on the Entrance Assessment Day, school reference and interview. For Year 8 – Year 10 entry, academic Scholarships are offered in the light of entrance examination results, reference and interview. The threshold for consideration is scores equivalent to the top 5% of the national ability range in Mathematics and English. Exemplary standards of attendance, behaviour and satisfactory academic progress are required for the maintenance of a Scholarship. Pupils awarded academic awards are expected to take advantage of additional participation in academic competitions or clubs as suggested by departments. Where additional academic qualifications are available in the subject relevant to the scholarship, students are required to participate in the additional programme in order to retain the scholarship award. The Sixth Form For Sixth Form entrants, GCSE results are used to assess eligibility. This usually means grades 8-9 in all GCSE subjects. Academic scholarship awards will be reviewed after first year internal examinations. 6
Helping with fees Non-Academic Scholarships Sport, Music and Drama awards are made on the condition that the pupil agrees consistently to represent the school in the activity for which the award was given when requested to do so. They are expected to be heavily involved in relevant school representative and extra-curricular activities and to maintain an exemplary attendance and behaviour record. School representation and extra-curricular involvement must be prioritised before commitment to external activities, teams or clubs. Scholarship recipients will usually be expected to study the relevant academic subject to GCSE and/or A-level. Sport Scholarships Sport flourishes at Stafford Grammar School and many of our pupils represent their discipline at county and national level. Sport scholarships are assessed through application form and video submission, once these have been assessed candidates can then progress to the second round which involves a trial. The guide for consideration of a Sports Scholarship is representation beyond county standard in one or more sports. This usually means membership of a Midlands team or an appropriate national ranking in individual sports. ISA achievements alone are not sufficient but selection for “All England Schools” competitions is a good indicator of eligibility. Membership of football or other sports academy programmes is not sufficient. Our “Elite Sports Programme” provides support and academic flexibility for pupils who have the potential to realistically aspire to professional sporting careers. In the Sixth Form, Sport scholarships may be awarded based on representation beyond county standard, usually national recognition in a school based sport. Good examples would be tennis national ranking, swimming national qualifying time or Olympic development squad membership in a particular sport. 7
