6 NEW FUTURE ENGINEERS GALLERY AT LONDON TRANSPORT MUSEUM Visitors to the London Transport Museum in Covent Garden can test their skills, solve transport conundrums faced by modern day engineers, and enjoy a series of interactive exhibits in the new Future Engineers Gallery, which opened last week. The gallery inspires an interest in STEM subjects and highlights the creativity, social value and sheer range of jobs available in engineering, with one exhibit asking you to choose the type of engineer you could become: a dreamer, planner or fixer. The Future Engineers and Digging Deeper galleries, The Secret Life of a Megaproject exhibition and family fun activities are part of the Year of Engineering 2018 which aims to raise the profile of engineering amongst 7 to 16 year-olds and encourages young people to consider a career in engineering. The next generation of engineers can experience ‘driving’ or operating a modern train inspired by an Elizabeth Line AVENTRA 345 train manufactured by Bombardier Transportation in a recreated train cab, use control buttons and a computer system to drive through tunnels, pull in to a platform and find out how clever engineering can solve challenging scenarios. The Ticketing exhibit Go With The Flow, a partnership with Cubic Transportation Systems and Mastercard, shows how ticketing has evolved from the early days of manually operated machines to today’s contactless payments. Objects include a Bell Punch ticket machine, in use on the network from 1893 to 1958. A state-of-the-art palm scanner by Cubic Transportation Systems shows how, in a future world, a human being might become their ticket. The Shape Your City exhibit lets visitors play an interactive table-top game as they race against the clock to create a healthy and well-connected sustainable city. This urban planning jigsaw invites visitors to ‘play’ with different parts of the city such as housing, stations, green spaces and landmarks and to make them work together to make a successful city. The London Transport Museum is filled with stunning exhibits and explores the powerful link between transport and the growth of modern London, culture and society since 1800. Historic vehicles, world-famous posters and the very best objects from the Museum’s extraordinary collection are brought together to tell the story of London’s development and the part transport played in defining the unique identity of the city. GUY FAWKES’ NIGHT 2018 The Gunpowder Plot of 1605, in earlier centuries often called the Gunpowder Treason Plot, was a failed assassination attempt against King James I of England and VI of Scotland by a group of provincial English Catholics led by Robert Catesby. The plan was to blow up the House of Lords during the State Opening of England's Parliament on 5 November 1605, as the prelude to a popular revolt during which James's nine-year-old daughter, Princess Elizabeth, was to be installed as the Catholic head of state. Today, the foiled plot is commemorated with firework displays all over London on and around 5 November. Guy Fawkes’ Night is traditionally followed by the Lord Mayor’s Show, this year’s procession is on Saturday 10 November, and the annual Remembrance Day service which will be held on Sunday 11 November at the Cenotaph in Whitehall to honour the servicemen and women who sacrificed their lives for their country. The service has changed little since it was first introduced in 1921 – hymns are sung, prayers are said and a two minute silence is observed on the stroke of 11 o’clock, the World War One moment of ceasefire. Wreaths are then laid by the Royal Family, leaders of the Armed Forces and politicians. The ceremony concludes with a march past of war veterans, an enduring gesture of respect for their fallen comrades. AUTUMN HALF TERM AT THE POSTAL MUSEUM The Postal Museum reveals five centuries of British social and communications history as seen through the eyes of its iconic postal service. Alongside permanent exhibition galleries and a temporary exhibition space, Mail Rail, London’s secret Post Office Underground Railway, has been opened to the public for the first time in its 100 year history, including a subterranean ride through some of the original tunnels. Throughout this October half-term, The Postal Museum invites visitors to discover surprising characters and wonderful words through the magic of writing. Head along for a fun-filled programme of activities for kids of all ages spanning arts, crafts and illustrator-led workshops. Drawing inspiration from The Postal Museum’s stories, kids can experiment with calligraphy and papermaking, or create their very own character with help from a storybook illustrator. In the galleries, brilliant pop-up performances will bring exhibits to life, recounting some of the most remarkable tales from our postal past. This year, The Postal Museum is also joining forces with Bloomsbury Festival to celebrate 100 years of (some) women being granted the right to vote in the UK. Rides on The Postal Museum’s 100-year-old-railway, Mail Rail, and 45-minute sessions in the museum’s postal-themed play space for the under 8s, Sorted!, can be added to the price of a ticket. Thanks to National Lottery players, The Postal Museum invest money to help people across the UK explore, enjoy and protect the heritage they care about – from the archaeology under our feet to the historic parks and buildings we love, from precious memories and collections to rare wildlife. Visitors should book online to guarantee a visit for what is set to be a fun-filled October half term.
