Autumn Houseguests I don't know about you, but I've recently noticed the annual influx of spiders into my home. Cobwebs everywhere: window sill, doorframe, corner of the room. Little black bodies creeping, lurking and scuttling. In fact, it's actually a myth that spiders come inside in the autumn to hang out in the warmth of our houses for the winter, apparently they were there all along. The autumn is mating season so the male spiders are more active, coming out from their usual hiding places on the hunt for a mate hence why we notice them much more. It's kind of creepy to think that they've been there the whole time without us knowing, especially the big ones! A lot of people are scared of spiders, and I'd probably say I was one of them. A lot of people would also go to a lot of effort to make sure their house was as spider free as possible, out of fear or an idea that they are dirty. I wouldn't say I was one of those people. There's one particular spider that has been making it's web in my bathroom window for a number of weeks and we've got to know each other pretty well now, I might even go so far as to say I've become fond of her (him?). I wasn't that keen on her to start with. Even though she's small she's right there in your face while you're brushing your teeth or washing your hands, but I'm getting used to it now. I should probably admit that I initially left the web there out of laziness (my bathroom is in dire need of a thorough clean, don't tell anyone) but now I can't really bring myself to destroy it. It's a creature's home after all. She always sits in the exact same place and the familiar presence of her little brown body has become rather comforting. Plus, I know she's doing me a service. One evening I noticed she had caught a fly which was quite fascinating, if slightly disturbing, to watch. I definitely dislike flies more than I dislike spiders, and knowing that my spider friend and her cousins are ridding my house of these and other pests without me even having to do anything makes me feel better about their presence. They are an integral part of our indoor ecosystem, though many would probably not want to admit the existence of such a thing. But whether you like it or not, we live in harmony with a number of different creatures and breaking our backs to rid our homes of all them would not only be pointless but unnatural and unhealthy. So instead of sweeping away the merest hint of a cobweb, why not give your feather duster a break and leave a few where they are and take an interest in their inhabitants? After all, they're not doing anyone any harm. Plus it's Halloween, why not make a feature of it, for a few weeks at least! Or if you can't stomach that, take a morning walk on the next frosty morning, or when there's been a heavy dew and the sun is shining. See if you can spot the outdoor spiders' webs sparkling in the sun, lacing the hedges and fences with jewels. You can't help but appreciate their artistry.
