Seeing our students succeed is at the very core of the Lindsey Wilson
College mission. Our efforts are focused on helping every student reach his
or her potential and achieve their educational and career goals.
In this 2017-18 annual report, you will read about six individuals and
their LWC journey from student to graduate. The stories are not just about
academic achievement. Rather, they are about young men and women who
were empowered by the support of the LWC community and used it to propel
themselves to success.
● Dylan Beasley ’17 of Bloomfield, Ky., whose work ethic on and
off the field found him playing football in Norway.
● Kamil Malone ’18 of Nashville, Tenn., who works with young
people at Caverna (Ky.) High School through the AmeriCorps program.
● Makenzie Montano ’18 of Louisville, Ky., who took adversity and
loss and transformed it into a college volleyball career filled with passion
and purpose.
Their stories are but a small sample of the of the hundreds of inspiring
stories happening everyday at Lindsey Wilson. I wish we could tell them
all. Therefore, it is only appropriate that a publication dedicated to the students
at LWC should also celebrate a fundraising campaign designed to enhance
the LWC experience for students. The Values-Centered
Student-Focused Campaign with a goal to raise a minimum of $40 million
during the 5-year period of July 1, 2013 to June 30, 2018 exceeded its goal
when it ended this past summer.

Volleyball Superstar Transforms
Personal Loss Into a College
Career Driven By Purpose
Lindsey Wilson College volleyball program made history on December
2, 2017, in Sioux City, Iowa when the Blue Raiders captured the program’s
first NAIA Championship -- a 3-1 win over Dordt (Iowa) College.
The win capped a perfect 35-0 season for the Blue Raiders.
For senior setter Makenzie Montano of Louisville, Ky., the win was the
culmination of four years of hard work and perseverance – and a
promise she made to her late mother, Donna.
As a volleyball player, Montano’s earned an impressive list of honors
and awards: AVCA Southeast Region Player of the Year and 2017 Mid-
South Conference Player of the Year, the NAIA tournament’s most
valuable player, 2017 NAIA Volleyball Player of the Year and first-team
All-American. Montano finished her LWC career as the program’s alltime
leader in assists during the season.
Montano dedicated her volleyball and college career to her late
mother, who passed away of kidney cancer immediately before her
freshman year of college. Montano graduated from LWC in May with a
degree in communication.
The following is a news article about Montano’s journey to LWC that
was published in the Sioux City (Iowa) Journal before the
championship match in December.
Mom’s death ‘set’ college choice for Lindsey Wilson senior.
Less than two weeks after the death of her mother, Makenzie
Montano called Andy Cavins, volleyball coach at Lindsey Wilson
College in Columbia, Kentucky.
Montano told Cavins she had nowhere to go. She needed
help.
Montano and Cavins stand in Sioux City this week (December,
2017) to compete for the NAIA National Volleyball Championship.
The tournament represents the final action for
Montano in a most fulfilling playing career, one whose collegiate
arc began in August 2012 when Donna Montano was diagnosed
with stage IV kidney cancer.
“On the second day of my junior year in high school, my
mom had a nine-hour surgery,” Makenzie Montano says.
Makenzie’s parents, Tony and Donna Montano, divorced
when Makenzie was 5 years old. Her older sister, Morgan Montano,
was a student at Western Kentucky University in 2012. It
meant that Makenzie, a junior at Mercy Academy High School
in Louisville, Kentucky, resided at home, largely alone, during
her junior year. Well, when she wasn’t sleeping next to her
mother at the hospital.
The cancer moved to Donna Montano’s spine in February
2013. Six months later, Makenzie Montano signed a volleyball
scholarship offered by Queens University of Charlotte, North
Carolina, an NCAA Division II institution nearly 500 miles
from Louisville.
However, by the start of Montano’s high school senior year,
her mother’s condition worsened. By the early spring of 2014,
the family knew time was running out. Makenzie and her date
for the senior prom stopped by the hospital to see her mother.
On July 3, 2014, Donna Montano collapsed at home. Makenzie
rode along in the ambulance, shouting at her mother, imploring
her to wake up.
“She was having seizures and would only respond to my
voice,” she says.
Eleven days later, Makenzie sat with her mother in her room
at an assisted living facility in Louisville. Her mother rolled

and lay on her side,
prompting Makenzie to
ask, “Mom, are you OK?”
“My mom turned back
over, looked me dead in
the eye and said, ‘I love
you more than you will
ever know.’”
It was the last time
Donna Montano spoke.
Seconds later, she suffered
a seizure and fell into a
coma. She died a few
hours later, at 12:27 a.m.

Montano said her favorite part of winning the national
championship was celebrating with her teammates.
“...these girls are my family and winning this with
them is so sweet and it was my last game, so way to
go!”
on July 15, 2014, just three minutes after Makenzie and sister
Morgan ran into her room. Makenzie said it was her mother’s
last selfless act, shielding her daughters from watching her die.
“That was just like Mom,” Makenzie says.
Makenzie Montano, then 18-years-old, helped plan her
mother’s funeral. She signed papers to have her cremated. She
stayed at home, surrounded by her sister and her father. In a
matter of days, she was supposed to make an eight-hour drive
to Queens University.
“Around July 25, I called the coach at Queens and asked for
my release from their scholarship,” she says. “I told them I
couldn’t go that far from home. I wasn’t ready to do that. They
understood.”
She then called Coach Cavins, a man who had served as a
recommendation for Montano’s scholarship application at
Queens. Cavins had coached Montano in one season of club
volleyball. “I called Coach Cavins and said I had nowhere to
go,” Montano said. “I asked if he could help me out.”
He did. Cavins asked Montano to fill out an application for
admission to Lindsey Wilson College. She followed orders and
did it that night.
Officials expedited the paperwork and let Montano know
that, as a high school graduate with a 3.98 grade-point average,
she’d earn academic and athletic scholarships.
“I’d never been to Lindsey Wilson College before,” Montano
remembers. “I’d barely heard of it. My only connection was
Coach Cavins.”
She made the 102-mile drive and visited the school on July
27, 2014. She moved in one week later. She has since started
four years as the setter for the Blue Raiders, who begin pool
play in the national tournament at 9 a.m. Tuesday against Texas
Wesleyan, of Fort Worth Texas.
“I didn’t choose Lindsey Wilson,” Montano says, “Lindsey
Wilson chose me.”
The college, she says, saved her, allowing her to remain
close to home while extending her playing career, something
she’s passionate about. Coach Cavins and his wife, Jessica
Cavins, and their 3-year-old son, Kellar Cavins, have become
Montano’s second family. Cavins called his setter this summer
and asked to connect with her father, Tony Montano, simultaneously.
Cavins took the opportunity to laud the elder Montano
for his support of his daughter through an extremely trying
time. “I wouldn’t have made it without my dad,“ Makenzie
Montano says.
And then Cavins disclosed that his star setter, a first-team
NAIA All-American as a junior, would be on full scholarship
her senior year.
The news allowed the Montanos to go car shopping as
Makenzie had been without wheels for six months following an
accident.
After her graduation, Makenzie Montano, a communications
major with a 3.94 grade-point average, plans to enter graduate
school at Lindsey Wilson while possibly working as a graduate
assistant in the volleyball program, one way in which she’ll return
some of what Lindsey Wilson College has offered her.
While Montano, player of the year in the Mid-South Conference,
can’t wait to get going in the national tournament, she remains
a bit reflective this week, examining how her mother’s
fight against cancer ultimately set her collegiate volleyball career
in motion.
Her mother, she says, is never far from her thoughts, especially
on the volleyball court. She shows off a tattoo that reads,
“Always on my mind. Forever in my heart. 7-15-14.”
“The tattoo is on my right side, which is odd for a tattoo on
the ribs,” she admits. “I did that to hide it, and because my
mom was always my right hand, my best friend.”
The Blue Raider setter also wears a necklace. Before each
match, she removes the necklace and, prior to placing it in her
bag, gives it a kiss.
The necklace also features that date: 7-15-2014; a day she’ll
never forget, for all the right reasons.

Graduate Together

For Susan and Logan Adams of Somerset, Ky., Lindsey Wilson
College was a family affair. The mother and son graduated
together from LWC at the college’s 107th commencement ceremony
on May 12.
The Adams walked side by side to the commencement stage
to receive their degrees.
“When I found out my mother could walk in commencement
the same day as me, I was so happy,” said Logan. “She deserved
to be celebrated and to celebrate. I was so proud of her. I
knew how hard she worked for her degree on top of being married
and a mom with a full-time job. She’s also very active in
her church. It’s unbelievable.”
Susan said it was special to share the day with her son.
“It didn’t truly become real until walking into Biggers Sports
Center,” said Susan, a 1986 graduate of Russell County High
School in Russell Springs, Ky. “To be able to share this milestone
with my son beside me is a blessing that not many people
get to have.”
Susan said she was also nervous about drawing attention
away from her son.
“I vividly remember my mother expressing her hesitance
about walking in the commencement exercises with me,” said
Logan. “I told her this was as much her moment to celebrate as
it was mine. I am so glad I got to share that day with her.”
Not only did Susan and Logan graduate together, but they
also earned the same degree – a bachelor of arts in human services
and counseling. They said that going through the journey
together strengthened their relationship.
“This is one more thing we have in common,” said Susan.
“We talked about homework, papers and courses we had both
taken. We would bounce ideas off each other regarding the field
of human services. It made my experience that much more rewarding.”
Susan earned her degree through LWC’s community campus
at Somerset Community College. Logan had a more traditional

experience by enrolling on the A.P. White Campus and living in
residence halls.
“I will always be thankful for my time at LWC,” said Susan.
“Although I was not able to spend much time on campus, every
time I was there I felt supported and had no trouble finding help
with whatever I needed. I was able to learn about not only my
profession but about myself as well.”
For Logan, LWC was his second home.
“LWC felt like home to me,” he said. “It’s a place that I
knew I could have unlimited opportunities for growth, but still
enjoy the close-knit community atmosphere. I think the hardest
part of my college experience for me was leaving. Leaving an
incredible community that has given me so much. My fear is
that I hadn’t sufficiently given back to the LWC family as much
as it had given to me.”
The Adams family has a deep connection to LWC. Vice President
for Student Services and Enrollment Management Dean
Adams ’78 is Susan’s brother-in-law and Logan’s uncle. Dean’s
wife, Valerie J. Murrell ’90 Adams once served as the college’s
alumni director. And their daughter, Devon Adams Jett is a
2002 LWC graduate. Logan’s cousin, Caleb, will graduate in
December 2018.
“Dean was someone who I considered a mentor during my
time at the college,” said Susan. “His wisdom and leadership
are strong examples for what I wanted to get out of my education.”
Dean Adams said it was a special time in his life when
Logan and Susan graduated from LWC.
“It is always affirming when someone in my family chooses
to attend LWC,” said Dean. “However, when you get to witness
your sister-in-law and nephew walk across the commencement
stage on the same day, it is such a special occasion. I’m not surprised
that Susan and Logan earned degrees in human services.
They both have such a heart for helping other people. I’m extremely
proud of them and LWC.”

Mountain Laurel
Festival Queen And
Student Mentor
When Lindsey Wilson College senior Gabby Pyles entered
the 2018 Kentucky Mountain Laurel Festival in May, she said
she had no clue what she was “getting in to.”
“I didn’t know how to do a curtsey so I watched all these
videos online to try to figure out how,” Pyles laughed about
preparing for the event. “The girls in the videos were very elaborate,
doing all this stuff with their arms. I knew I could not do
that, that’s not me. So about 20 minutes before I was to do my
curtsey, I asked my host to show me how to do a simple, short
curtsey and that was good enough for me.”
The curtsey might have been simple, but it was good enough
to get the judges’ attention. Pyles became only the second LWC
representative to be crowned Kentucky Mountain Laurel Festival
queen. The other LWC queen was Devon Adams ’02 Jett in
2001.
Pyles was chosen as queen from 20 candidates who represented
Kentucky colleges and universities. Her escort was
human services and counseling senior Sam Kiger of Elizabethtown,
Ky.
“It was all just a completely new experience for me because
I’ve never done a pageant or anything like that before,” said
Pyles.
In its 88th year in Pineville, Ky., Kentucky Mountain Laurel
Festival is Kentucky’s second longest-running festival (the
Kentucky Derby Festival is the longest). Pageant activities and
festival events take place over a four-day period, beginning
with a Thursday-night concert and an introduction of the pageant
contestants. The festival’s highlight is the coronation of the
queen on Saturday afternoon at Pine Mountain State Park, Kentucky’s
oldest state park. Candidates are judged on appearance,
personality, manners, poise and cooperativeness.
“It is such a big deal there, the whole downtown of Pineville
(Ky.) is involved,” said Pyles. “Everyone comes out and supports
it.”
Pyles made an early impression on her hosts by mentioning
one particular skill.
“On Thursday night I was told that I needed to introduce myself
on stage,” said Pyles. “They didn’t really give specific instructions,
just the basics and maybe a fun fact about myself. So
I told the audience that my fun fact was that ‘I can solve a
Rubik’s Cube in one minute and 11 seconds.’ Needless to say I
spent the rest of the weekend solving Rubik’s Cube for all these
kids around the festival.”
Pyles said that one of her favorite things about the Kentucky
Campbellsville native and LWC senior Gabby Pyles
won the 2018 Kentucky Mountain Laurel Festival in
May. Pyles is only the second representative from
LWC in the 88-year history of the festival to win the
coveted title.
Mountain Laurel Festival was the opportunity to meet people
and share her faith.
“I like how we just had so many opportunities to talk to people
and make friends and relationships,” she said. “I’m such a
people person, I really enjoyed that. All I really had to do was
be myself and have fun and let Jesus talk and work through me.
I loved having the opportunity to share about the Lord so
much.”
She also said that she made friendships that she hopes will
last a lifetime.
“I met so many awesome girls and I’m already talking to a
couple of them about planning a get-together,” she said.
A week after her coronation, Pyles left for the Dominican
Republic for a five-and-a-half week internship with Go Ministries
of Louisville, Ky.
“I visited the Dominican Republic for one week last summer
with a Lindsey Wilson mission team,” she said. “This year I
was there longer. I was assigned to a new team each week, and
I accompanied them to their service sites and activities.”
Pyles is a member of a variety of clubs and organizations on
campus, including LWC Singers, Bonner Scholars, Student
Ambassadors and Peer Mentors. She is the founder and captain
of the campus chapter of Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
Pyles said she especially enjoys serving as a mentor to
younger LWC students.
“I love working with freshmen, it’s always been one of my
favorite things,” she said. “Freshmen are still searching for their
purpose, and it’s cool to be a Peer Mentor and get to be a positive
voice in their life.”

Unexpected
Journey
Kamil Malone Turns To
Past Experiences To
Find His Life’s Calling
When Kamil Malone looks back at his time before he was a
Lindsey Wilson College student, he sees the life experiences
that led straight to his major. But it took his experiences at
LWC to help him discover what would make him truly happy.
“My original plan was to major in accounting,” said Malone.
“I was a business major with an accounting emphasis, and then
I changed to communication. But none of it seemed to suit me.”
Malone said his experiences made him realize that working
with children is what he really wanted to do.
“Through my experience of going on mission trips in high
school to Haiti, I realized that I should funnel that passion into
my career path,” he said. “I wanted to become a mental health
counselor for kids, especially troubled youth, and the human
services and counseling degree was perfect for me.”
Malone heard about LWC when he was a junior at Brentwood
Academy, a private Christian school in Nashville, Tenn.
His football coach introduced him to one of the LWC football
coaches who was visiting Brentwood on a recruiting trip, and
Malone said that the two hit it off immediately.
“We had a great conversation that day,” said Malone. “I
knew right away that LWC would be a great school to attend.
LWC seemed a lot like Brentwood. It had Christian values, and
I liked that it was small and not too far from Nashville.”
To say Malone was an active student at LWC would be an
understatement. Malone, who played on the varsity football
team, also volunteered with numerous clubs and organizations.
Even when he didn’t belong to a particular group, it wasn’t uncommon
to see him chipping in when help was needed.
“I liked volunteering and helping others,” said Malone. “I
did a lot of work and spent time with groups that I didn’t actually
belong to in an official capacity because I’m a people person
and I like to serve.”
After deciding to pursue a degree in human services, Malone
sought a minor in a field of study that some might consider unexpected
– especially for a 6-foot 3-inch defensive lineman.
“I minored in women’s studies at LWC because I wanted to
push myself and do something more,” he said. “My brother and
I were raised by my mom, and when she wasn’t around it was

actually belong to in an official capacity because I’m a people person and I like to serve.”

my aunt and my granny that cared for us. I could see that the
women in my life were sometimes held back in society by no
fault of their own. And knowing that they were strong capable
women, something about that always seemed wrong to me. I
wanted to understand women’s role in society based on more
than what has been traditionally
expected from them.”
Attending women’s studies
classes was an interesting experience
that proved mutually beneficial
for Malone and his classmates.
“Being an African-American
male in those classes always put
me in the minority,” said Malone.
“The situation was unique, and I
truly believe it facilitated a
stronger learning environment because
of our differences. I’m a very
extroverted person and that’s how
people on campus always perceived
me, but in class I also feel that I’m a good listener. I
learn more by listening than talking. I think it helped others in
the classes to see my perspective and experience and vice versa.
We all learned from each other.”
Associate Professor of English Allison Smith said that having
Malone as a student and a volunteer at women’s studies
events always created a positive environment.
“One thing that I will always value in Kamil is his willingness
to model for other men how one might be an advocate and
ally for women, in addition to showing positive representations
of masculinity on campus,” said Smith. “Men can help organize

conference, men can lead children’s activities on campus, in addition
to being an athlete. These are all things that Kamil has
done. He really proves what we are all capable of if we reject
gender stereotypes and follow our true talents and abilities.”
LWC football coach Chris Oliver also praised Malone’s
knack for being a supportive and
strong presence in the football program.
“Kamil’s personality always shines
through in any situation,” said Oliver.
“He was an outstanding teammate
who always supported others, and he
was willing to take on any task for the
betterment of our program.”
Two weeks after graduating with a
bachelor of arts last semester, Malone
started a job at Caverna High School
as a Kentucky Life Coach through the
AmeriCorps program. He is also in
his first semester in LWC’s nationally
accredited graduate program in in counseling and human development.
“I’d then like to move on and get my doctorate before I turn
30,” said Malone. “I can see myself potentially taking a position
as a guidance counselor, but I’d also love to work with
troubled youth in a juvenile detention setting.”
Malone is thankful that LWC helped and continues to help
him in reaching his full potential.
“More than anything you are encouraged to be yourself at
LWC,” said Malone. “The faculty and staff are always there to
support you and want to see you succeed in life. If I had it all to
do over again, I wouldn’t change a thing.”

Commitment
To Success
Dylan Beasley’s lifelong
pursuit of excellence landed
him a chance to play football
internationally and a job offer
— so he did both.

When Dylan Beasley was considering where to attend college,
he didn’t think it would lead to playing professional
football in Europe.
Beasley recently completed a season as a professional
American football player in Norway for the Åsane Seahawks,
a team in the Norwegian Federation of American sports, leading
them to the league championship as their quarterback.
Now he’s set to begin on a new adventure – a teacher and
coach in Southcentral Kentucky.
A 2013 graduate of Nelson County High School in Bardstown,
Ky., Beasley played four years of high school baseball
and football, which gave him several options for a collegiate
athletic career.
“When I was first looking at Lindsey Wilson College, I
had also considered playing baseball,” he said. “I was having
a tough time deciding between baseball and football, and I
felt that I had probably waited too long as I hadn’t made a
decision one way or the other by the time the football team’s
recruiting season ended. So, I figured that wasn’t going to
happen for me. But a couple of the quarterbacks dropped out,
and they came back to me with another offer. I felt that it was
definitely the right fit for me.”
Beasley had a successful collegiate career at LWC, both on
and off the field. He majored in education and graduated with
honors. In addition to football, Beasley was very involved on
campus. He participated in student government, the Student
Athletic Advisory Committee and Campus Alpha.
“I watched probably eight hours or more of game film
every week during the season,” he said. “Then there was
throw practice, weight lifting, studying, classes and everything
else on top of that, and there’s not a whole lot of time
left in a day. It’s a lot to juggle. As a freshman, being the new
guy and somewhat shy and a little homesick, I found myself
just going to the library a lot to read. I think that definitely
helped me and got me off on the right foot as a student-athlete.”
Beasley owns a long list of LWC football awards and honors.
He was the program’s starting quarterback for three seasons,
leading the Blue Raiders to an overall record of 30-6,
and he was captain during his senior year.
“Dylan was a great example of what we look for in our
student-athletes on and off the field,” said Lindsey Wilson

head coach Chris Oliver, who helped launch the Lindsey Wilson
football program nine years ago. “He had a strong commitment
to academic success, but his character is even more
impressive.”
On the field, Beasley passed for 9,135 yards and threw 97
touchdowns passes. He was named 2017 Mid-South Conference
Bluegrass Division Player of the Week three times and
was a finalist for 2017 NAIA Player of the Year. Perhaps
most impressive, he was an Academic

every year he suited up for the
Blue Raiders.
Those accomplishments led to
a stint as a professional football
player in Europe.
“I knew that playing overseas
was an option for me about two
years ago,” said Beasley. “I put
my highlight film out there to see
if there was any interest. I think
mostly, even beyond getting to
continue my football career, I wanted to opportunity to see
the world. But at the same time, I’ve played football since I
was 5 years old. It’s part of who I am. I have many other interests,
but football has shaped me into the person that I am
today, and I think I’m a better man for it.”
Beasley’s area of study in education was history and social
studies. He is passionate about those subjects, and the opportunity
to play American football in Norway and help as a
coach was a benefit in several ways.
“When I return from playing football overseas at the end
of the summer I want to become a high school social studies/history
teacher and coach football,” said Beasley. “The
opportunity to play football and help out as a coach of the
team with the Åsane Seahawks fulfills two things I’m passionate
about. The added perk of seeing the world, especially

Beasley credits the LWC faculty for stoking his passion for
history and education.
“When I took my first education class here I was able to
go into the school system and see what it was like to be a
teacher,” he said. “I fell in love with it. Education is a challenging
program, but it’s worth it when you consider the impact
you are able to make in the
lives of the students.”

States in early July after leading the

“After living in another country
for four months, I’m now able to
understand how people in other
countries live differently from how we do in the USA,” said
Beasley. “I can apply this experience, especially in the subject
that I teach, to better communicate with my students
about cultural differences and how they relate to the lessons.
It will also help with coaching because having to communicate
with players who spoke English as a second language
furthered my ability to focus on the fundamentals that will be
very important at the high school level.”
And Beasley said his road received a significant boost at
LWC.
“Over all I just feel very fortunate to have had LWC lay
such a great foundation for me,” said Beasley. “The college
was ideal providing opportunities that continue to pay dividends.
It was the best decision I could have made.”

LWC students swept the top three spots at the
40th-annual Southeast Recreation Research
Conference, held in Athens, Ga. A total of 20
students from LWC’s recreation, tourism and
sports management program presented undergraduate
research at the regional conference on
March 26. The Southeastern Recreation
Research Conference is an opportunity for
students and professionals within parks, tourism
and recreation fields to present research.

The Bonner Scholars were honored May 30 in
Frankfort, Ky., when they received the Group
Service Award at the 23rd-annual Governor’s
Service Awards. The annual awards are coordinated
by Serve Kentucky, formerly known as the Kentucky
Commission on Community Volunteerism and
Service. Serve Kentucky is part of the Kentucky
Cabinet for Health and Family Services. The Bonner
Scholars were one of only four groups honored by
Lt. Gov. Jenean Hampton and Executive Cabinet
Secretary Scott Brinkman during the ceremony.
The LWC nursing program was one of 50 programs to receive
funding from The Arnold P. Gold Foundation and the American
Association of Colleges of Nursing. The nursing program
received support to host white coat ceremonies for incoming
nursing students this fall.
Lindsey Wilson College was named a national College of
Distinction in June. The award recognizes American
higher education institutions for their commitment to the
implementation of high-impact educational practices and
student-centered teaching.

an LWC faculty or staff member who the
LWC Student Government Association officers
believe embodies the college’s mission
of serving “every student, every day.”
The College of Distinction selection process includes a
review of each institution’s freshman experience, retention
rates, alumni success, strategic plan and student satisfaction,
among other factors. Schools are accepted on
the basis of meeting requirements in four categories, including
student engagement, teaching, community involvement
and outcomes.
The college was also named a Kentucky College of Distinction
and an Abound: Finish College for the college’s
work with adult outreach programs. In addition, LWC
earned program-specific recognition in the fields of
business, education and nursing.

For the seventh consecutive year, Lindsey
Wilson athletics captured the Mid-
South Conference President’s Cup. The
Blue Raiders also won the inaugural
men and women’s all-sports trophies.
Lindsey Wilson scored 135 points in the
all-sports competition to capture the
eighth overall cup in school history. The
Blue Raiders scored 68 points in the
men’s all-sports trophy and 67 points in
the women’s all-sports trophy.
A total of 11 LWC students were honored in April for their leadership skills and contributions to the LWC

The Jessica
A Scholarship in Memory of
Jessica Smith ’10 Benefits
LWC Women’s Golfers

Jessica Smith ’10 who tragically passed away in an automobile
accident on October 2, 2016. The Smith’s have established “The
Jessica,” an endowed scholarship to honor their late daughter.
Lindsey Wilson women’s golfer Dacie Bolton is the first recipient of the
Jessica Smith Endowed Scholarship.
Bolton, a physical education junior from Hopkinsville, Ky., says receiving
the scholarship is an amazing honor.
“When Coach (Eric) Wyrick first mentioned that I was receiving this
scholarship, I was so honored to be chosen by the Smith family to receive
such an amazing gift,” Bolton said. “When I met the Smiths, and got to see
firsthand what loving and generous people they are and how much they
love Jessica. I was overwhelmed.”
“We all share the same love for the game of golf. I can see how much
Jessica loved this game just by talking to her parents,” Bolton added. “The
Smiths are now a huge part of my support system and I’m so happy to be
associated with such a wonderful family. Their belief in me and our
women’s golf program is incredible and I’m eternally grateful.”
Earl and Marlene Smith created the Jessica Smith Endowed Scholarship
– affectionately called The Jessica – to benefit a women’s golf student-athlete.
The $25,000 endowed gift is pledged in the memory of their daughter
who tragically passed away in an automobile accident on October 2, 2016.
Jessica played three seasons for the Lindsey Wilson women’s golf program,
graduating in 2010.
“Marlene and I are very happy with Dacie as the first recipient of the
‘The Jessica’,” Earl Smith said. “She is everything we could have hoped
for; an outgoing personality, mature, someone fun to be around and a terrific
golfer. We are very impressed with her as a representative of the
women’s golf program and now, this scholarship.”
A member of the LWC women’s golf
team from 2008-2010, Smith won six
individual tournaments while helping
LWC win 20 team titles, including three
conference championships.
Jessica Smith was a two-time NAIA All-American
(2008, 2010) while playing at Lindsey Wilson.
She concluded her collegiate golfing career with a
78.9 scoring average – second best in LWC
women's golf history. She won six individual tournaments
while helping Lindsey Wilson win 20
team titles, including three conference championships
and three top-10 finishes at the NAIA National
Championships.

Player of the year and the 2008 NAIA Region XI Player of the
year. She earned all-tournament honors at the 2010 NAIA National
Championship.
Bolton is averaging 78.3 strokes per round this season through
her first four tournaments this season. She has a pair of top-five
finishes this season, including a fourth-place finish at the Mid-
South Conference fall Tournament in late September.

In Memoriam:
Lenn Pruitt
Beloved and longtime member
of the Lindsey Wilson College
Board of Trustees, Lenn Pruitt
died on Jan. 26 in Watkinsville,
Ga. He was 84.
Pruitt was among Southcentral Kentucky’s more respected
business leaders. A native of Green County,
Ky., Pruitt graduated from Draughon College and
then went on to own private junior colleges throughout
Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina
and Tennessee.
Mr. Pruitt owned tobacco warehouses in Greensburg,
Ky., and he was also in the radio business. He built
and operated WKEQ-AM and WJDJ-FM radio stations
in Somerset, Ky., and he also owned WIDS-AM
in Russell Springs, Ky.
A veteran of the Korean War, Mr. Pruitt was a member
of the Veterans of Foreign Wars-Post 5813 and
American Legion Post 124. He was a mason, a
Shriner and past president of the Greensburg Rotary
Club.
Mr. Pruitt was a member of the Greensburg Cumberland
Presbyterian Church, where he served as an
elder. He was first named to the LWC board in 1980.
In 2013, he receive a doctorate of letters, honoris
causa, from LWC. Pruitt was a longtime supporter of
scholarship aid for Lindsey Wilson students, having
established the Lenn R. Pruitt Endowed Scholarship.
Pruitt is survived by his wife Mary Ellen Pruitt, two
children and six grandchildren.

John Landrum
Admired Lindsey Wilson College
trustee who served his
community as a civic leader and
businessman died on August
21. He was 96.
Born in Harlan, Ky., John Landrum spent most of his
career in Harrodsburg, Ky. He was owner of Landrum
Insurance Agency, Inc. and Springlake Farms. He
was a pilot for over 60 years and a veteran of the
U.S. Army Air Corps where he served as a flight instructor
during World War II. Later he served as director
of transportation for Humana, Inc.
In addition to serving on the LWC Board of Trustees,
Landrum chaired the James B. Haggin Memorial
Hospital Board of Directors. He was a member of the
Harrodsburg Landmark Association, the Harrodsburg
Historical Society, the Harrodsburg First committee,
and the Board of Directors of Shakertown of Pleasant
Hill, Inc., and Centre College, his alma mater.
Landrum and his late wife, Vivian, were active members
of Harrodsburg United Methodist Church and
served in various leadership roles. Together they supported
many Christian organizations in Mercer
County.
Landrum was a longtime supporter of scholarship aid
for Lindsey Wilson students, having established the
Vivian Landrum Endowed Scholarship. He was preceded
in death by his wife and a son, John VanBever
Landrum. He is survived by one son, William Bibb
(Erin) Landrum III and three grandchildren.

2017-18 Notable & Noteworthy
Several Lindsey Wilson College studentathletes
achieved individual national
championship status in 2018.
Sophomore swimmer Alexis Kessler
from Lexington, Ky., won national
championships in the 50-yard
freestyle, the 100-yard butterfly, and
the 100-yard freestyle events, becoming
the first three-time national
champion in program history. For
her efforts, she was named the NAIA
Swimmer of the Year, also a first in
program history.
Senior Cam Tessari from Norwalk,
Ohio, won the individual national
title at 149 pounds as the Lindsey
Wilson wrestling team posted a fifthplace
finish at the 2018 NAIA
Wrestling National Championships in
Des Moine, Iowa in March.
LWC expanded educational opportunities to
community college students in Knoxville, Tenn.
LWC signed a partnership agreement with Pellissippi
State Community College on June 26 to
make bachelor degrees more accessible through
LWC’s online programs. Roane State Community
College was added later in the summer.

became the first Lindsey Wilson

field national title at the 2018 NAIA
Outdoor Track & Field National
Championships in May by winning
the 100-meter dash.
Lobatse, Botswana native Goabaone
Mosheleketi captured the NAIA Outdoor
Track & Field National Championship
in both the long jump and
triple jump events this season.
Mosheleketi was also selected as the
2018 U.S. Track & Field and Cross
Country Coaches Association NAIA
Outdoor Track & Field National
Men's Field Athlete of the Year.
The college awarded a total of 218 undergraduate
and graduate degrees at its 2018 spring
commencement ceremony, held before a crowd
of more than 3,200 guests. Combined with 340
degrees awarded at the 2017 winter commencement
ceremony, LWC awarded 558 degrees to
the Class of 2018. LWC alumnus, Honorable
Michael Futrell ’07, above, delivered the commencement
address.
