Why don’t you try to vote early? What is Early Voting? Early voting takes place in person before Election Day. You don’t need an excuse to vote early — you can vote early even if you are capable of voting at the polls on Election Day. Most states offer early voting at this point, including California. If you haven’t voted by mail you want to do your civic duty in person, just take the information with you to a local polling place instead of driving off the mountain. The location to vote early in the mountain communities is Lake Arrowhead Fire Station #91. It’s located at 301 CA S. State Hwy. 173, Lake Arrowhead, CA. Early voting starts the week before the election on Tues. Oct. 30th, 2018 until Sat. Nov.3rd from 10 am – 6 pm., and again on Mon. The large dirt-carrying trucks then drive to San Moritz Way and drive past the Lake Gregory Education and Community Center to the former San Moritz ballfield. There the trucks are being filled with the old silt being stored there. Then they continue on San Moritz Drive and turn left onto Lake Gregory Drive up to the traffic signal. They turn right onto Highway 18 and go down the mountain. The residents are glad to see that there is now a small dent in the large dirt pile, which has received the nickname “Mt. San Moritz” and hope it disappears faster than Slover Mountain in Colton. The Lake Gregory Recreation Company is reportedly envisioning that land on the former ball field as a grassy flat space for picnics and community events for this next summer, says Lake Gregory Recreation Company Manager Arlene Arenas. On October 11, a large compacting machine was delivered to the dam site in pre-dawn hours due to its size and to not conflict with other traffic going up and down the mountain. It was so large it required a special use permit from the Department of Transportation to be transported up the mountain. This compacting machine will be quite loud when operating. From the website ‘A Better Lake Gregory,’ they warn; “This equipment will be used through the duration of the project to compact material used for the buttress. The noise from the multi-axle transport will likely be significant and we apologize for the inconvenience this might cause local residents.” The project is approximately on schedule and the only problems they foresee that may affect the on-schedule completion in April is an extremely wet or early white winter. If it snows, the work will stop, as they cannot compact in snow. They will be unable to compact if it rains too heavily either, however a light rain, since they are using some water while compacting, will not greatly delay the project said Rockforce. An extreme deluge may wash away some of the already compacted materials, which would result in a significant setback. Rockforce has spoken to numerous community groups and requested, in a highhearted manner, that residents not pray for a White Christmas and then pray heavily for rain in April so the lake will refill for this coming summer. All water in Lake Gregory comes from run-off and snowmelt, so it is not known if the lake will refill by summer. But most hope the weather is cooperative this winter season, so the repairs can be completed on time, and the repairs are completed before the rains begin to fall and that they come late enough and are heavy enough to fill it this spring for the upcoming summer beach season. Fallen Fruit Organization to Plant Trees by Lynette Eastwood On Sunday, November 18th, there will be 14-15 semi dwarf apple trees will be planted next to the Crestline Chamber of Commerce. The trees are expected to grow 10-15 feet tall and will have a crab apple root base. The fruit trees will be planted by David Burns and Austin Young, Los Angeles based artists who operate under the name Fallen Fruit. Since 2004, they’ve been planting fruit trees around Los Angeles and across the country. Young says, “We were interested in how Los Angeles is a driving city, and we felt really disconnected from our neighborhood and community and thought that a map (using fruit trees) would help us meet our neighbors.” He hoped the map would inspire people. The parks that they work on have usually around 20 to 50 trees. A tree takes about two to four years to mature. Once it matures, each tree can produce 300-500 pounds of fruit each year during its lifespan of up to 50 years. So far, since 2004, 47 fruit parks have been built, and this is what the mission and purpose has been to use fruit as a medium to get people physically connected with their neighborhood’s. Apple trees go back at least 100 years in the San Bernardino mountains.
