shares his top tips and ideas.
It’s useful to have a starting point
that leads the changes — it might
be a picture, favourite accessory
or a piece of furniture. Try using
a theme for inspiration: 70’s retro,
English country, American diner,
minimalist chic.
When it comes to colour, consider
the shape and size of the room,
the ceiling height, and how
much natural light is available.
Dark colours may make
small rooms feel smaller and
oppressive. Lots of light may
wash colours out.
Use a colour wheel to
get the full spectrum of
complementary colours.
Try a contrasting worktop or door
colour on an island or breakfast
bar. Pick out worktop colour flecks
to inspire door, wall or accessory
colours. It’s worth knowing that
lighter worktops can take bold
contrasting finishes.
Add interest with extra design
features like alcoves, islands,
and feature storage — a mix
of cupboards, open alcoves
and shelving makes the most
of space.
Use accent lighting for plinths,
under shelving and wall storage.

statement or focal point over
an island or breakfast bar.
•Use natural finishes to add
warmth and contrast to
solid colours.
Splashbacks and upstands
can completely change the
look of a kitchen. Full feature
splashbacks create a dramatic
statement and upstands in the
same Origina finish as the
worktop make the overall look
appear larger.
