God knows where (and who? Or who)
you are. He sees your potential, not
your looks, your university degree or
your accomplishments. God did not
choose David for his looks, He chose
him because of his heart. Inside the
shepherd boy was Israel’s greatest king
waiting to get out. There is a king on
the inside of you. There is more to you
than meets the eye.
When Samuel arrived in the house of
Jesse to ordain the man who would be
king, six sons of Jesse passed before
Samuel one by one – but none of
them qualified to be king. 1 Samuel
16:11-13 says:
So he asked Jesse, “Are these all the
sons you have?” “There is still the
youngest,” Jesse answered, “but he is
tending the sheep.” Samuel said, “Send
for him; we will not sit down until he
arrives.”
So he sent and had him brought in. He
was ruddy, with a fine appearance and
handsome features. Then the LORD
said, “Rise and anoint him; he is the
one.”
So Samuel took the horn of oil and
anointed him in the presence of
his brothers, and from that day on
the Spirit of the LORD came upon
David in power. Samuel then went to
Ramah.”
The odds were against David. He was
born out of an extra marital affair
(Psalm 51:5), he was the lowest in the
family pecking order, his own father
forgot about him when Samuel asked
to see his sons and his mother was not
there to argue for his inclusion.
To the rest of the family David may
have been something of a joke.
However, it was not a joke when the
horn rested on David’s head, it was
not a joke when the oil began to flow
unhindered to anoint David’s head, it
was not a joke when Samuel declared,
“behold, the Lord’s anointed”. You too
will have the last laugh.
MAINTAINING GREATNESS
You have been chosen to do great
Once we accept who we are in Christ,
we need to maintain this identity
through our lifestyle.
David was different from his brothers.
What made him stand out was his
spirituality, which was expressed
through faithfulness, prayer, worship
and holiness.
The fear of God will keep us in right
standing: The [reverent] fear of the
LORD [that is, worshiping Him and
regarding Him as truly awesome] is
the beginning and the preeminent
part of wisdom [its starting point
and its essence], And the knowledge
of the Holy One is understanding
and spiritual insight. Proverbs 9:10

When we know the God we serve for
ourselves and have a reverent fear of
Him we will live right, abide in Him,
obey Him and reflect the greatness of
God’s power and character.
