Antonietta, Mr. Assimo
in ‘Bubble Gang’ special
MICHAEL V.
The change in Bubble Gang is constant because of the
continuous change in the audience profile
TV’s most vile characters
are going to bring the
house down on the
night of 23 November.
Sharp-tongued and illtempered
Mr. Assimo
and telenovela hater
and nitpicker Antonietta
will make appearances
in the telemovie
of the longestrunning
gag
show Bubble
Gang.
The Michael V-headlined gag show
is celebrating 23 years of being on
the air, giving laughs to Filipinos
come late Friday night.
As it celebrates its anniversary,
Bubble Gang will present a narrative
uniquely intertwining the show’s
popular segment forms — talk,
interview, musical parody,
sketches, commercial spoof
and gag-dubbed as “Bente
Tres Oras.”
This year’s TV special
tells the adventures of
Bea Bangenge (Michael
V) and Toto Batoto
(Antonio Aquitania) as
they embark on a journey to find a
Wi-Fi connection for Bea.
It is on this trip that they will meet
the fascinator-wearing, hard-to-please
Antonietta (Betong) and the acidtongued
Mr. Assimo (Michael V). Other
famous characters who will cross
paths with Bea and Toto are mob king
Don Cantoni (Paolo Contis), wisdomcracking
hermit Tata Lino (Michael
V), Mommy Vicky and Mommy Karen
of Balitang Ina (Chariz Solomon and
Valeen Montenegro), Lebrown James
(Contis) and many more.
For comedy genius Michael V.,
Bubble Gang’s loyal viewers have
always been their inspiration in
creating new gags and sketches.
“The change in Bubble Gang is
constant because of the continuous
change in the audience profile. But it’s
a good change, as always. I learn new
things from them. For me, that is
always a challenge and it’s also
a good thing because it adds
to my knowledge as a
comedian,” he said.
The rest of the
cast includes Sef
Cadayona, Boy 2 Quizon,
Mikoy Morales, Jak Roberto,
Archie Alemania, Juancho Trivino,
James Macasero, Roadfill, Diego
Llorico, Kim Domingo, Andrea
Torres, Jackie Rice, Denise
Barbacena, Lovely Abella, Analyn
Barro, Arra San Agustin, Arny Ross
and Myka.
Under the helm of director Bert
de Leon, head writer Caesar Cosme,
Groove back to the
1960s, ’70s, ’80s and
’90s in a concert driven
by nostalgia and one
that will tickle the
funnybones. See the
Philippines’ premier
vocal ensemble on stage
with a class act comedian
in “Throwback with The
Company and Jon Santos”
on 1 December at The
Theatre at Solaire.
Starting out as an outof-college
regroup, The
Company has evolved in
its decades in the music
industry. From singing
traditional genres, it decided
to move to a capella and vocal
jazz as a new challenge and
for the novelty of the pieces.
The release of the members’
singles “Everlasting Love,”
“Muntik na Kitang Minahal”
and the popular love song
“Now That I Have You,”
which is often used as movie
theme songs, or in wedding
halls, has immortalized
their names. The original
members, apart from Moy
Ortiz, have moved on to
pursue the next chapters of
their lives but not without
passing on the torch to their
successors who have kept
their legacy alive and very
much felt today.
A stark contrast to the
steady melody of songs comes
Jon Santos, a powerhouse
comedian famous for his
impersonations. His satirical
impressions of the country’s
most prominent political
personas are complemented
by his quick wit, allowing
such a seemingly hilarious
number to become the
controversial stirrer of
important conversations.
He has transformed himself
to the likes of former
president Joseph Estrada,
senator Miriam Santiago
and Batangas governor Vilma
Santos, who he admits is his
favorite. Although he became
known for his comedic
prowess, Santos was able
to establish his credibility
as a theater performer who
can add more spunk to
any character he
portrays. He
has performed
as lead in
Priscilla,
Queen of the Desert
and more recently, Rak of
Aegis.
From singing traditional
genres, they decided to
move to a capella and vocal
jazz as a new challenge
and for the novelty of the
pieces.
The Theatre at Solaire’s
advocacy of bringing Filipino
pop music into the limelight
means offering acts that
the audience wants but
also presenting ingenious
collaborations.
“This unexpected tandem
will highlight another layer
of Filipino pop music
that goes beyond the
tunes, lyrics and voices.
The Company and Jon
Santos together on one
stage merges what the
Filipinos love most — good
music and witty comedy.
You will witness a new
wave of theatrics that’s
as exciting but with more
spontaneity and humorous
reality jabs.” says Audie
Gemora, Solaire’s director
for Entertainment.
With The Company’s
vocals injected with Santos’s
brand of comedy, expect a
night filled of throwbacks
with the best “retro” beats
that will make you dance,
laugh and remember good
old days.
Tuesday of the Thirty-third Week in Ordinary Time
At that time, Jesus came to
Jericho and intended to pass
through the town.
Now a man there named
Zacchaeus, who was a chief
tax collector and also a
wealthy man, was seeking
to see who Jesus was; but he
could not see him because of
the crowd, for he was short
in stature.
So he ran ahead and
climbed a sycamore tree in
order to see Jesus, who was
about to pass that way.
When he reached the place,
Jesus looked up and said to
him, “Zacchaeus, come down
quickly, for today I must stay
at your house.”
And he came down quickly
and received him with joy.
Luke 19: 1-10
When they all saw this,
they began to grumble,
saying, “He has gone to stay
at the house of a sinner.”
But Zacchaeus stood there and
said to the Lord, “Behold, half of
my possessions, Lord, I shall give
to the poor, and if I have extorted
anything from anyone I shall
repay it four times over.”
And Jesus said to him,
“Today salvation has come
to this house because this
man too is a descendant of
Abraham. For the Son of Man
has come to seek and to save
what was lost.”
