Welcome to the winter issue of Primary Times! With Christmas, Hanukkah, 

and more right around the corner, it’s a wonderful time of year full of 

celebrations and cheer for the whole family. There are so many festive 

activities and events on in the upcoming weeks, there’s sure to be 

something for everyone. Many of these listed events are free or low cost – 

which might be especially helpful at this time of year!

Winter Wonderland 

at Cannock Chase Forest 

For over 10 years, the Forestry 

Commission have been spreading 

festive spirit at Cannock Chase forest 

and helping families to kick off their 

Christmas celebrations by offering 

visits to Santa in his woodland 

grotto alongside their real Christmas 

tree sales. This year there are lots of 

new experiences to enjoy, so grab 

the family, coats and a woolly hat, 

not forgetting your money for your 

Christmas tree and step into their 

brand new Forest Winter Wonderland. 

The little ones (and adults alike!) 

will love meeting Santa and his 

real reindeer in his magical forest 

wonderland and while you wait, you 

can immerse yourself in all things 

Christmas with their new festive 

scenes. A quick trip to the North Pole, 

giant penguins and polar bears and 

you might even find you get involved 

in a snowball fight! 

Capture all the magic that Christmas 

has to offer this year by visiting 

Cannock Chase Forest’s new Winter 

Wonderland. 

Highfields Independent School 

Highfields School is an independent 

co-educational prep school for girls 

and boys aged 2 to 11, based in the 

historical market town of Newark, 

Nottinghamshire. 

There is a strong emphasis on 

academic achievement. Last year’s 

ISI inspection found “most children 

regularly achieve well above national 

average”. There is a high pass rate 

at 11+ and for independent senior 

schools, with many pupils being 

awarded scholarships across a range 

of disciplines – not just academic but 

music, sport and art. 

The school offers an enhanced 

curriculum which includes learning 

beyond the classroom. Music is 

taught by specialist teachers including 

a large number of peripatetic teachers 

who teach both instrumental and 

singing. There are many opportunities

calendar. All children take part in 

team and individual sports and are 

encouraged to try new experiences, 

including an extended sports 

programme which this year includes 

table tennis, sailing, golf, trampolining 

and kayaking. 

With over 14 acres of parkland, Forest 

School is offered to all Kindergarten 

and Pre-Prep children, taking 

advantage of the natural environment.

Winter Wonderland Arrives in Nottingham 

On the 15th November, Nottingham’s 

annual Winter Wonderland opened its 

doors and the city’s festive lights were 

switched on, including 4,000 red and 

white lights on the city’s monumental 

60 foot Christmas tree. Another 

notable feature of the event is the 

750 square metre ice rink. This is the 

eighth year the event has taken place, 

with new attractions being added 

each year. The Winter Wonderland 

is suitable for the whole family, and 

includes child-friendly attractions 

such as a traditional carousel, a Santa 

toy ride, a helter-skelter, and a nativity 

scene. Edward Mellors, of Mellors 

Group Events, stated: ‘In 2017, Sur La 

Piste really raised the bar, and I’m sure 

the people of Nottingham are looking 

forward to another amazing Christmas 

in the city. This year, the introduction 

of the toboggan slide and Bar Altitude 

will further cement Nottingham 

Winter Wonderland’s reputation 

as one of the very best Christmas 

markets in the country.’ 

Snow White at Mansfield Palace Theatre 

Sue Holderness will be playing the 

villain of Snow White and the Seven 

Dwarfs, which runs at Mansfield 

Palace Theatre 

from Saturday 1 December 2018 to 

Sunday 6 January 2019. 

Sue is a much-loved British actress, 

best known for her role as Marlene in 

BBC1 sitcom Only Fools and Horses. 

She tells us: "I’m greatly looking 

forward to frightening the good folk 

of Mansfield this year as the Wicked 

Queen. Come and enjoy the fun… if 

you dare!” 

Sue will be joined by the hugely 

popular Adam Moss, returning to 

Mansfield for the fourth time. He says: 

“I can’t thank the people of Mansfield 

enough, because without your 

comments and loyalty to the theatre 

and myself, I wouldn’t be returning.”

Festive fun with YMCA day camps 

in the winter holidays 

This winter, choose between Camp 

Williams in West Bridgford or the 

NEW Newark Camp at 

Newark Academy! 

At Camp Williams children ages 4 - 15 

will take part in camp rallies, sports, 

swimming, games and crafts. Plus, 8 

– 15 year olds on our full programme

Crib Services 



Young children are welcome to dress in 

Nativity costumes (some are available on 

the day in the Minster). The Crib Services 

are very informal, great fun, and are for 

families and children. We act out a Nativity 

play (with the lead actors being students 

and ex-students from the Minster school), 

the children get involved too. The service 

ends with the blessing of the Christmas Crib 

and refreshments.

the streets selling matches but being abused or ignored. 

Awoken at midnight from a foody dream by a beautiful 

lady who asked for a light, Lavinia lit a match for her even 

without being paid. The woman turned out to be a fairy 

who wanted to repay Lavinia’s kindness with a magic ring. 

Her excitement dwindled when told the ring didn’t grant 

wishes, just turned things into poo! What good was that? The fairy told her 

it would be very useful if she used her intelligence, and, with thought, that’s 

just what she did, completely changing her life. However she took things too 

far. See how she used her powers and how it led to a possible disaster in this 

thought provoking story full of funny moments with some serious undertones.

go wrong? Well, knowing Winnie and the chaos that usually surrounds her, 

quite a lot! See what occurs in this latest hilarious, reckless adventure with 

my favourite well meaning, nutty witch. Large print and colourful, lively 

pictures on every page make this perfect for beginner readers, but great for 

all abilities. 

Skycircus - Peter Bunzl (Usborne, £6.99) 

Sad that her father thinks a business party is more important 

than her birthday, Lily can’t resist an intriguing invitation to a 

Skycircus show. Her enjoyment of the acts, especially to see 

other hybrids perform, is short lived when it becomes obvious 

this is a trap and she, Robert and Malkin are kidnapped by 

an old foe. Seeing how badly all the performers are treated 

by the horrible owners, the friends wonder what they plan 

for Lily and are horrified when it is clear her life is in danger. 

They need to escape, but it is a race against time and they will need all the 

help they can get, but will they be able to get the performers, both hybrid and 

human, onside? This latest Cogheart Adventure is another exciting read, full of 

gripping twists and turns. You don’t have to have read the others to enjoy this 

one. It might make you think about how you look at others, especially those 

who are different in some way. Full length novel.

with Primary Times magazine, Jamie 

talks about reducing childhood obesity,

WHAT INSPIRED YOU 

TO BECOME A CHEF? 

My parents are fantastic cooks, and 

growing up in a pub, as soon as I was old 

enough, my dad put me to work in the 

kitchen. I loved being around the chefs 

and the food, and I quickly got to help 

with the actual cooking. That’s where it 

all began. 

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO

I think having kids of my own focused 

my attention on the next generation 

and what we can do to make sure they

About Jamie 

Parent, chef and restaurateur, Jamie Oliver started 

cooking at his parent’s pub at the age of eight. After 

leaving school, he began a career as a chef that took 

him to the River Café, where he was famously 

spotted by a television production company 

and the Naked Chef was born. 

to kids, limits on how much salt, fat and 

sugar can go into our food, and making 

a conscious effort to make it easier 

(and cheaper) for people to eat well 

every day. I’m a great believer that if you 

give children (or, anyone!) clear, useful

I can’t recommend enough getting them 

involved in the kitchen nice and early, to 

spark an excitement about food. Even 

simple jobs like getting them to pick herb 

leaves or stir a batter will give them a 

great sense of accomplishment and will 

mean they start to understand, and be 

interested in food. 

HOW DO YOU ENCOURAGE 

YOUR CHILDREN TO REACH 

FOR A HEALTHY SNACK? 

Fresh fruit is really brilliant! Try making 

your own popcorn, for instance, flavoured 

with cinnamon or lemon zest. Dips are 

super-easy to make: I’ve got a really tasty 

minty yoghurt dip to serve with crunchy 

colourful veg!

Jamie’s Minty 

Yoghurt Dip 

Ingredients: 

4 sprigs of fresh mint 

1 lemon 

¼ clove of garlic 

200g natural yoghurt 

salt & pepper 

1. Finely chop the mint leaves, 

and add them to a mixing bowl. 

2. Grate the zest of half a lemon 

into the bowl, then cut the lemon 

in half before squeezing the 

juice into the bowl. 

3. Peel and chop the garlic and 

add it to the mixture. 

4. Add the yoghurt, salt and 

pepper and stir everything 

together! You’re good to go.
