WE KEEP GOING UP
IN THE WORLD’S TOP 60
Heriot-Watt has been named in the world’s top 60 universities
by The Times Higher Education Golden Age Rankings
for 2018. The University was ranked in an impressive
55th place out of 200 institutions from 44 countries.
The Golden Age University Rankings, now in its second year, measures
universities established between 1945 and 1967 for their teaching,
research, citations, international outlook and industry income. This
latest ranking underlines our reputation as one of the world’s leading
universities and echoes the acclaim we received as The Times
and Sunday Times ‘International University of the Year 2018’.
CLIMBING THE UK RANKINGS
In The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide
2019 we’ve been ranked 35th out of 132 UK universities,
up four places from last year. We’re also ranked 6th in
Scotland by this prestigious Guide which is regarded
as one of the most authoritative in the UK.
The Guide ranks universities on nine indicators including research
quality, graduate prospects, student satisfaction with teaching quality
and their wider student experience, entrance qualification held by new
students, degree results achieved, student/staff ratios, service and
facilities spend, and degree completion rates. We’re also in the
top ten out of 21 subjects and ranked 17th in the UK, and 1st
in Scotland, for graduate salaries six months after graduation.
REACHING A NEW HIGH
We’ve climbed to our highest position in the QS World
Rankings 2019, rising from 312th last year to 302nd.
We’ve been steadily climbing these rankings, increasing
our position by 67 places over the last six years.
The QS World Rankings has been published annually since 2004
and currently features more than 1000 universities, each measured
on a variety of factors including academic reputation and employer
reputation. Among the key findings from this latest rankings
period was recognition of our high standing with many employers
for producing high calibre graduates and our global research.
Moving forward:
STRATEGY 2025
Over this past year we have been
working to develop a new Strategic
Plan for the next seven years. This
process has involved a variety of
activity including horizon scanning
and competitor analysis, along with
‘Our Global Conversation’ which
sought to involve as many people as
possible across the University group
in a discussion around our future.
We undertook a significant consultation
process, including launching a microsite
to gather feedback on where we should be
headed and running a series of workshops
in the UK, Dubai and Malaysia. All of this
activity aimed to broaden the discussion
around ‘Our Chosen Direction’ and map
out our priorities and key themes with
representatives from across our schools
and services. Having agreed our strategic
direction and mission together, the new
strategy will be launched early in 2019.
Critical to our future will be further
development of our global distinctiveness
and growth in the quality of our education
and research. We will continue to be
a pioneering institution embracing the
‘digital transformation’ and positioning
ourselves to be even more influential.
Across our campuses our key objective will
be to ensure that academic colleagues,
students and staff feel part of a single
university, no matter where they are
based. What we wish to ensure is that
every part of the University is successful,
whatever its geographical location.
Developing the University’s
connectivity across the globe
remains crucial to our success
Developing the University’s connectivity
across the globe remains crucial to our
success and our alumni play a very significant
role in this. As we develop new ideas and
work into new policy areas we will welcome
the advice of our alumni, and equally their
input to enterprise initiatives, industry
partnerships and philanthropic support.
Heriot-Watt continues to be a highly
regarded, world renowned and innovative
university – our Strategy 2025 will work to
consolidate this reputation even further.
